A Bunch of Underrated POTO Fics I Like
There are some really great Phantom fanfics on AO3 from @wheel-of-fics and @catcorsair and others getting a lot of traffic. But there are a few out there that I've read where I've though "holy Hera, why do these not have more hits?" Here are some of my favorite fics with 5,000 reads or less (and one that has more but it's honestly one of the best fics I've ever read). All are rated E or M. I also have a major pet peeve in the fandom which is character assassinating one of the boys so Christine can choose the other. Most of these do not do this.
A Deal with the Devil by Lunescape. Raoul and Erik have fallen into an enemies-with-benefits arrangement that, so far, has kept Erik from Christine. But when Raoul makes a bargain with Erik to stop him taking her, he finds that a deal with the devil is not so easily evaded. Complete.
Notes: This is the one on this list that blessedly has more than 5K hits, which is a very recent spike since it was completed in December. A friend and I were both reading this from when the author started first posting and were screaming pretty much every chapter. Gothic horror and smut, really well developed non-self-insert OCs who interact with the main trio (and Philippe) quite well.
2. A Little Menagerie series by Lunescape. Erik/Raoul/Christine throuple series. Well written dynamic on each of the pairings and all three of them. Complete.
Notes: Why on earth aren't there more trio throuple fics? Ive read these ones multiple times, I have no idea why they are so under-read.
3. L'Apparition Initiale by Xanadian_Sled. The Angel of Music reveals himself before Christine as a mortal man for the first time. This is the story of that initial appearance and the whirlwind of remarkable events that followed. WIP.
Notes: Leroux-accurate what-if-things-went-differently to pair E/C together. The only thing I don't like about this one is my personal pet peeve of character assassinating Raoul in order to have him not be viable, but it's at least sort of believable and E/C have a nice dynamic.
4. Etudes by @or-what-you-will. A series of "seriously how is there not more smut about these scenes from the ALW musical that are begging for a smut fic to be written?"
5. Just Enough Rope by @or-what-you-will. In which Raoul learns something about himself during the events of the final lair. Complete.
Notes: E/R breathplay fic.
6. Only if For a Night by @obliobla. It was only right that it happened here, now—the furious mob quelled, the gendarmes' search abandoned. Raoul, recovering from the punjab lasso, secure in his victory, in theirs. Tomorrow, she would be his before the world, in the full and pure splendor of day. But tonight…Complete (short, one-shot)
Notes: Superb mostly-Lucifer fic writer Obli's first foray into our POTO brainrot and she crushes it.
Also, please read my stuff.

Absolutely in love with the epic & ongoing bredlik project by @marvinhere over on the @renegadepublishing Discord. This is actually my second (third?) binding, the other one (two?) started back in February but currently languishing in WIP hell. Not quite the floppy, snuggly cow book I wanted/had in mind but it's a good start. Happy to have figured out a construction method for those legs I like & will improve upon next time.
This is volume 3, the poems wrangled and typeset by @marvinhere with illustrations by the mysterious Jenny (IG: thimblejuice). The Discord has been sharing every poem members come across as well as crafting some on the fly. The whole thing is a joyful project and in addition to Marvin's own binding (shared on Discord), @zhalfirin has bound two exquisite copies of it as well [1][2].
Am suuuuper psyched for the next volume currently in the works, so you can expect a herd of these babies at some point!

Graphic Novel Recommendations: Over the Garden Wall 🍂 Edition
It’s spooky month, so here’s some graphic novel/comic recommendations that have similar energy to that quintessential autumn cartoon, Over the Garden Wall.
The Secret of the Stone Frog by David Nytra: A pair of siblings wake up in a mysterious, whimsical, and dangerous woodland world and encounter many strange creatures and places on their journey back home. Sound familiar?? This is extremely similar to OTGW in the best of ways, and the spooky, dreamlike atmosphere is a real treat. The artwork is gorgeous, extremely detailed ink drawings. What’s not to love?? Highly recommend if you love OTGW.
Tumblr media
Kerry and the Knight of the Forest by Andi Watson: A boy finds himself navigating a malevolent forest with the aid of a mysterious guide. Contains ghostly children, an evil forest spirit, and a recommendation from Patrick McHale himself. The art is simple but has a similar patterned charm. Some panels reminded me of Cartoon Saloon’s Secret of Kells. Definitely worth getting lost in!
Tumblr media
Twistwood Tales by Twistwood (AC MacDonald): This is a webcomic, not a graphic novel. (However, you can preorder a physical book, to be released in 2023!) A bright and colorful cast of whimsical characters populates an autumn wood. Very charming and funny, and the character design is top notch!

I NEED you guys to see this right now. This is my favorite sculpture/work of physical art and it’s a crime that more people don’t know about it.
Carroña (English, Carrion)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This thing was absolutely GORGEOUS in person and it's so fgkfgindf radical because look at it!!!! The bloody disemboweled corpse of beauty!!! Holy shit!! I adore this sosossoo much and I love intentional destruction of art and aaaaaaaa
This is a work done by Spanish artist Javier Pérez in 2011, and it's currently being held in the Corning Museum of Glass (NY). CMoG's artwork page (go read it, it has more info on Pérez's other creations!) describes the piece:
"This sculpture consists of an elaborate chandelier whose many parts were blown and tooled of transparent blood-red glass, assembled and hung, then intentionally dropped. A flock of taxidermied crows perches on the fallen carcass, and shards dangle from their mouths. The installation is meant to evoke opportunistic birds gobbling carrion by the side of the road, a metaphor for the gradual disappearance of Murano’s traditional glass industry."
Pérez also has it listed on his personal website. (Many of his works may be considered disturbing for some, so if you see a thumbnail you don't like in his portfolio, don't click <3)

November Breaks by tumblr user winterandwords
Y’AAAAALLLLL please immediately right now go to @winterandwords and read her novella November Breaks. It’s in the pinned post and it’s free.
This kind of story was my bread and butter as a reader for a long time, and then for some reason I stopped reading it so much, and then I read this and said to myself, Pause, why did you stop reading so many stories about fucked up guys doing fucked up stuff? You love this shit!
November Breaks follows the story of two men, Brett and Noah, before and after they meet, and the changes they impact on each other. It’s incredible and violent and hopeless and sad and beautiful. It went places I didn’t expect exactly when I didn’t expect them to. They are the worst and best things to happen to each other. They are the best things to happen to me in a while.
Criminals do crime behind closed doors and in the open.
Anyway if you are 18+, and like fucked up guys doing fucked up things, and reading about people’s lives falling apart and coming back together (do their lives ever come back together? it’s hard to say), please read November Breaks.
Also less important but it was really nice to read about characters my age!!! I’m not that old but I’m not twenty anymore either lol

I’ve been away, spending time with my elderly mom who’s been in and out of the hospital lately. I left that laptop home, so haven’t been playing at all. I should be back tomorrow but until then I wanted to share some storytelling that lives in my head rent-free.
1. @rebouks (Somnium)
2. @akitasimblr (The Harper Legacy)
3. @budgie2budgie (I’m waiting patiently for more Rosemary and Tino)
4. @llamaheart (I love the whole Halen LEPacy but Melissa owns my heart)

Hey, I sent an ask a while ago about inspired works, and I wanted to let you know that the first one has been posted and gifted to you! Also please ignore the silly name 😭
—let_it_all_burn(Ember)
Thank you so much! I'm happy to know that the Ratatouille Style AU idea inspired you to write this fun drabble! Here's the link for anyone who might be interested:
I'd like you to know, let_it_all_burn(Ember), that the entire time I was reading this and Numbskull was going 'ara ara', I was just imagining Numbskull's face like (* ̄∇ ̄*) あらあら
I can definitely feel and enjoy Shay's tired but used-to-it attitude.

 Recommended Graphic Novels, volume 1
I read mostly manga, because I'm so picky about Western comics! But I've been keeping a running list of graphic novels I really liked, and I'm going to start sharing them here on this blog!
My tastes are often highly specific and choosy (I do NOT read romance, and I usually prefer any romantic relationships in the media I consume to be entirely ignorable or barely focused on) so most of these books have no romantic or sexual elements whatsoever. They are often fantasy, and the demographic I usually choose to read is often middle-grade, because I hate the aforementioned romantic nonsense perpetuated by YA fiction.
ANYway, that probably sounded very negative, so now let me sing the praises of a few things I like and recommend:
Wingbearer by Marjorie Liu and Teny Issakhanian: This one features a young girl in a fantasy setting, with a strong emphasis on winged species and birds. There is an adventure and mystery element to the plot and feels very Disney. The artist, Teny Issakhanian, has worked for Disney, so that’s no surprise. Her artwork is dynamic and gorgeous, full of color and life. This is going to be a series, and only the first book is out so far. Give it a try if you enjoy Disney and fantasy!
Tumblr media
Salt Magic by Hope Larson & Rebecca Mock: Another fantasy story, this one is set just after WW1 and is a sweeping, whimsical standalone epic about a girl’s journey to save her brother and family from a witch’s curse. It’s a story about growing up and letting go as much as it is about the beautiful, magical elements. The art reminds me of Studio Ghibli, poignant and sensitive and cinematic.
Tumblr media
Humpty Dumpty Lived Near a Wall by Derek Hughes & Nathan Christopher: A more unusual choice compared to the other two on this list, this is more of a picture book for older readers than a graphic novel. It is a creative spin on the popular nursery rhyme, and I won’t spoil it because it’s very fun. I think the art is the biggest draw for me, Nathan Christopher’s ink illustrations are GORGEOUS and rich with detail, and I highly recommend checking out the book just to stare at them.
