sunday snippet (homo fuge remix edition)

I have like five different WIPs that I'm actively working on at the moment and the Helen of Troy one is closest to being done so I'm actually trying to get it polished off. Have a bit! It's gross!

The idea of renewing the contract in writing comes from the Spiers Faustbuch and its English translation; it does also appear in Marlowe but sort of peripherally so we can get to the sexy Helen bit. I expanded on it a little because I thought it would be thematically appropriate to this particular fic. There's also a bit I lifted directly from the Murnau film. The choice of writing support, however, is my own invention. As noted: it's gross!

"Shhhh." Mephistopheles crouches down to maneuver Faustus' head into his lap, and his fingers are in Faustus' hair now, exquisitely gentle. Faustus curls around himself, blinking back tears as Mephistopheles continues. "I know you have doubts—but I couldn't bear it if I had to tear you apart now, my Faustus. We have so little time left."

Faustus swallows hard; it tastes of tears and rheum and just a hint of blood. He reaches up feebly and feels Mephistopheles' hand grip his own, so tightly that it hurts. He has always liked when it hurts.

"What must I do?"

Mephistopheles releases Faustus' hand, helps him to his feet, and slowly, deliberately begins to unbutton his doublet. In nearly twenty-four years he has done so more times than Faustus can think of to count, sometimes innocently, other times—

"Don't get all excited," Mephistopheles murmurs, indulgently. Faustus feels his cheeks grow warm as he realizes his breathing has grown rapid and shallow, but by now Mephistopheles has finished unbuttoning him, and Faustus stands as passive as he can while Mephistopheles eases the doublet off of his shoulders. He sets it aside and begins to roll up Faustus' shirtsleeves, first the bloodstained left one, then the clean right one. He raises Faustus' right hand to his lips, presses them briefly to the inside of his wrist.

"Hold still," Mephistopheles says, and then his teeth break the skin.

He raises his head to smile up at Faustus, licking the blood from his lips with the same unhurried sensuality with which he'd undone his doublet—and then his sharp nails are at the wound and Faustus feels his eyes roll back in his head as Mephistopheles, just as deliberately, begins to peel back the skin from the soft underside of his forearm. He does not scream, even as he feels it come away from the flesh, but through the red haze that descends before his eyes he thinks he can see the same words that had been inscribed in his skin, all those years ago, shining through the net of tissue and sinew and blood that now lies open and quivering in the air.

HOMO FUGE: yet shall not Faustus fly.

His blood had congealed then. It flows freely now.

Mephistopheles' arm is around his shoulders, now, steadying him, guiding him as he lurches toward his desk, half in a faint; he helps him to sit down. Faustus cradles his bleeding right arm as Mephistopheles spreads a sheet of parchment before him, finer and fairer than the best-prepared vellum, and yet Faustus knows that only moments ago it had been torn from his arm. He reaches out, gingerly, to touch it; his blood drips onto the surface, where the drops smoke acridly for an instant before being absorbed like ink on paper and then fading entirely. He breathes deeply and carefully, dizzy with pain.

"You could have used ordinary parchment," he says.

Mephistopheles makes the odd little sound that usually passes for laughter with him. "Oh, and I suppose your own blood will be enough this time?" He shakes his head, gestures toward the reopened wound on Faustus' left arm. "Now. Write."

Faustus reaches for his quill, almost instinctively, and Mephistopheles' hand grips his wrist once more.

"Use mine," he says, producing a black pen, untrimmed of its barbs; there is an intense odor of burnt feathers as he presses its tip into the wound, and when he presents it to Faustus it is hot to the touch. "Write," he repeats.

"What do I say?"

"Confirm your former vow," Mephistopheles says. "Do it quickly, and with unfeigned heart." His lips twist again. "You'll know what to write," he says.

Thoughts on remadora?

thank you very much for the asks, anons!

while they are by no means my otp, i really enjoy remadora as pairing - and i think they’re fully up there among the canon couples in terms of being an amazing vehicle through which to explore all sorts of questions about life and love - which i am aware is a sufficiently controversial statement that it involves an immediate engagement with some discourse…

because remadora girlies [gender neutral] get an enormous amount of shit within the fandom, particularly from fans who consider wolfstar to be a more plausible pairing for lupin than tonks. i have seen remadora shippers called homophobes for simply enjoying the couple, justified with the bizarre idea that it disrespects remus' relationship with sirius [so... the non-canon one?] to put them together. i have seen tonks turned into a pathetic shrew who is trying to keep remus from the real love of his life by trapping him with an unwanted baby. i have seen remadora shippers get a lot of the usual stuff that people who prefer the canon-endgame couples do [that to ship a canon pair is boring, that it is indicative of a lack of talent, that it indicates an uncritical support for jkr] magnified to eleven because tonks has the temerity to be a barrier to remus’ relationship with the fandom’s favourite hot and brooding man.

obviously, this is bullshit - primarily because its unreasonable and cruel to invest so much time and energy being mean to people because of their harry potter shipping preferences [fandom should never be that deep].

but it’s also a disappointment to me personally because it means that it can be very hard to find the sort of remadora i like without looking like i’m coming to contribute to the pile-on. because where many remadora fans and i don’t see eye-to-eye is that i have absolutely no interest in thinking about them as a relationship which is actually functional. and, all too often, i find myself sifting through fics which do prefer to interpret them like this - as romantic and passionate and stable - largely, i think it’s fair to say, as a defensive move against the tide of “urgh, imagine shipping that” nonsense - even though all the evidence of canon is that they are… very much not.

i am aware of the pottermore article which smoothes the edges of lupin’s canonical reaction to tonks’ feelings for him in half-blood prince - but, while i read this as something of a retcon to make the relationship more palatable, i also don’t think that assuming that both tonks and lupin’s attraction to each other was sincere precludes them being as dysfunctional as they canonically are. i don’t go in for the common anti-remadora argument that tonks “forces” him into a relationship with her - it’s clear in half-blood prince that it’s not only her who has discussed her feelings with molly and arthur weasley, lupin is definitely flirting with her when they pick harry up in order of the phoenix, lupin is an adult man [no matter other power imbalances between him and tonks - such as the fact that she is an agent of the state which oppresses him] who possesses the capacity to refuse her advances, and - since teddy’s conception is not immaculate - he has no issue with enjoying a sexual relationship with her even if he then wants to run away from the product of that.

instead, what i like with remadora is that they reveal something which goes against the grain of the rest of the series: that love is not always enough. throughout the seven-book canon, we see time and time again the idea that love - and, crucially, love-as-noble-suffering and love-as-sacrifice - is enough to overcome any problem. entire civil service collaborating with a terrorist regime? don’t trouble yourself, love has won. your mother dying in childbirth leaving you to be neglected in a state institution? your own fault you’re not interested in love.

i understand the genre reasons for this, but i also love the way in which lupin especially exists on the margins of these genre conventions [just as he exists on the margins of wizarding society!]. i’m always struck in deathly hallows that he’s the only person who’s actually realistic about the demands of war - particularly when he tells harry that it is breathtakingly naive for him to think he can get through the fighting without having to shoot to kill - and that part of him having to be shuffled out of the way when harry tells him to return to the pregnant tonks is because, were the story focused on realism, the idea that a wanted man who is considered an unhuman by the state fleeing in order to guarantee the safety of his wife and unborn child becomes eminently reasonable and harry's defense of the nuclear family embarrassingly unradical.

and so i like the idea of lupin seeing tonks - and tonks seeing lupin - initially as just a bit of fun, as the two of them being just two chill single people who think the other is hot and interesting and want to bang because of it.

[which is something fandoms in general really struggle with as a concept. we like epic love stories - and you won't find me objecting to that! - but we're less good at thinking about casual sexual attraction or transient friendships, and how these can be transformative and meaningful without having to end up going any sort of distance.]

and i then like the idea of the relationship being forced into a profundity it doesn’t really have the juice to sustain by the sheer avalanche of grief which besets the two of them - sirius, dumbledore, mad-eye, ted - and by the pressure of the war and the fact that the order is scrambling and the hangover of remus' self-destruction in half-blood prince which makes each cling to the other as a life-raft. i like remadora as something codependent and messy and strange and sad, and i don’t think this prevents it being sincere and fun and based in mutual attraction, but instead that these positive qualities can exist in conjunction with the fact that, without the war, it would have been a summer of fucking and that was probably it.

on tonks herself, i don’t think i can say it better than @evesaintyves in this meta on her character. i’ve been really uncomfortable with quite a lot of stuff i’ve seen recently which has taken against the idea that tonks can be meaningfully read as queer on the basis of what we find in the text, above all because it so often comes with the implication that one cannot imagine her in her canon endgame pairing and presume that she’s something other than straight or cisgender. eve sets out an excellent case for tonks as bolshy and liberated and in tune with herself and fun and confused and in flux and still figuring stuff out about who she is and where she’s going - and this translates, may i say, to an astonishingly beautiful way of writing her, lupin, and the dysfunction inherent between them which i highly recommend you read.

I remember when I was first getting into kink, I really fell for the "slippery slope" nonsense. I would find something in fiction that I thought was the coolest hottest, most extreme thing I'd ever seen and I'd love it, and then I'd follow a trail of links from that to something a little more extreme and thing that was the hottest, most extreme thing I had ever seen and I'd love that. Etc etc.

So I started wondering when does it stop? Surely, I'll just keep ramping up the extremity until I'm wanking to stuff that's well beyond what I actually think is hot, and surely at some point the only remaining threshold of extremity will be to take it into real life and start doing hurtful things to real people.

But it doesn't work that way. The escalation I was seeing was simply a discovery process of starting low and working up until I actually found my comfort threshold, and it didn;t take any effort to stop there because once I found it that was where I settled in.

It turns out that nothing is really too extreme for me in fiction (barring a few odd squicks that have nothing to do with extremity) and that I enjoy very light BDSM in real life. The "slippery slope" was just a methodical, no-surprises way of figuring that out.

It's also really funny to me because I think 99% of shippy fic is basically the same template with different set dressing:

The OTP does some kink that they're both into or at least both into by the end of the fic. Everyone ends up okay.

Or maybe it's about trauma, but it's very much in that woobiefic way where the reader and author are clearly super into the character and like watching them hurt because that's their fave.

Many a normally-squeamish fan is shocked, shocked I say, to discover that they like extremely bloody stories as long as they're about Deadpool or Jack Harkness doing freaky things with no consequences. Turns out, it isn't snuff or maiming that's the issue: it's sad endings.

But show that same fan some of the brutal superheroine depowering noncon from amateur erotica sites far outside of AO3's sphere, and they'll often recoil. Here, the vibe is sometimes that the audience likes watching the protagonist suffer because they hate them instead of because they love them, and ending in trauma and horror is the point. (Still doesn't make you a serial killer, but the vibe is definitely different from your average AO3 fanfic.)

A n00b to kinky stuff will often focus on the presence of blood or piss or a technical lack of consent more than on the underlying psychological aspects and so will see certain stories as radically more extreme than the last where I would see basically the same dynamic at the same intensity with slightly different props.

Wallflower live action ep 1

Wallflower (also known as Perfect Girl Evolution) is one of my all-time favorite mangas. The story takes the simple Cinderella/Pygmalion fantasy and turns it on its head. Four pretty boys who rent a house get told by their eccentric landlady that if they can transform her niece Sunako into a lady, they get to live rent-free. Always broke, the boys enthusiastically agree. Enter Sunako - spotty, unkempt, horror-loving, people-avoiding Goth. Good luck, boys!

Wallflower features perhaps one of the most awesome heroines to ever exist. Sunako is beyond TOUGH. And I mean tough. You mess with her (or with anyone she likes - one of the boys, her girlfriend Noi etc), an army will not save you from her wrath.

The boys (blunt, food-obsessed Kyohei, the "caring feminist" Takenaga, the playboy Ranmaru, and the sweet Yuki) do not know what is about to hit them. Wallflower is NOT about them reforming Sunako - the boys give up fairly quickly (they just try to pretend they are continuing so as to continue to get the deal from the landlady) and just accept Sunako for who she is - a violent weirdo who can cook. Sunako makes no excuses for being who she is - she has no interest in transforming herself into a barbie, she makes no bones about loving her horror movies or living with skeletons, her lack of interest in her hot neighbors 'that way', or in any pretensions about being ladylike.

Wallflower is really a celebration of being different and being happy in that difference. All the characters are somewhat odd - Yuki is delicate and shy, Takenaga is some sort of benevolent Moriarti, Ranmaru is a shameless, older-women-loving slut, and Kyohei...Oh, Kyohei. He is probably the only character who is almost as weird as Sunako is.

Nor do all the boys fall in love with Sunako magically or anything like that. Yuki has a long-standing girlfriend, Takenaga and Ranmaru acquire OTPs (Takenaga's girlfriend Noi is one of my favorite characters ever. God, I love her!) Kyohei and Sunako are the OTP but it's not because he sees her inner princess or anything silly like that - they are both blunt, violent, not too bright people imprisoned by their looks who like to do the same things for fun (one of my favorite things in Wallflower is the parallel it draws between the 'creature of darkness' Sunako and the ultimate pretty boy Kyohei - nobody sees them as a person, not really, because of the facade being so all-engulfing. Sunako freaks out the passerby and Kyohei can't keep down a job because the staff and customers start fights over him - underneath all the OTT hilariousness, Wallflower has a lovely point about inner persons).

Kyohei, Sunako's eventual boyfriend, is first introduced when he is (a) getting groped by his boss, (b) has screaming ladies disrupting the restaurant wanting to have him be their waiter; (c) loses it spectacularly, smashing the ladies' table, punching out the boss, and quitting. This has clearly happened to him umpteen times before.

The other three guys are Oda Takenaga, smart and cold-blooded:

Ranmaru, the older ladies' loving slut.

Together, they are Wallflower's very own F4, only much better adjusted. Let's call them W4, like the tax form.

Their rental is a gothic looking castle which will suit Sunako but why their landlady owns one is manga logic.

The Landlady is living her best life and the story is sprung in motion when she requests W4 turn her niece Sunako into a lady and that way rent is free. Watching Kyohei go from disgruntled by the idea to ecstatic at the mention of free rent is priceless.

Our first look at Sunako and she is just as gloriously odd as she should be. She also is utterly displeased to be sharing her living quarters with "creatures of the light." I adore her!!! She wants to avoid light, wear her hood, watch her horror movies, and roll in her creepy memorabilia.

But the makeover fails because Sunako is supernaturally strong and frees herself, causes an electric storm and escapes back into her lair. Good luck, boys, you will need it!

Meanwhile, the boys aren't the only ones trying to make cash. Here is Sunako's friend taking pics of Kyohei to sell to fangirls for money.

Said friend gets in trouble (she's been giving all her money to a host. Because of course) and Kyohei is also forced being a host or else Sunako's friend gets it. Manga logic is present.

But here is where we get to meet the REAL unhinged Sunako, who is not keen on either her friend or her roommates being taken advantage of and comes to the rescue herself.

Before you get carried away, being around too many good-looking people causes her to freak out ahahaah.

It's OK, her backup aka the rest of the boys are here, in drag.

Eventually, everything goes to hell and Kyohei and Sunako end up being caught and tied up. (Now that I think about it, the manga had a serious people being tied up fetish :P)

Too bad for the bad guys, Sunako is strong and violent and unties them both, and they go on to the violent rampage through the club, knocking hordes of opponents out in unison and Kyohei FALLS IN LOVE. (I will always be into the fact that he fell for the woman after seeing her headbutt people and crack their skulls ahahahah.)

Having destroyed a metric ton of goons and rescued whoever they needed to, Sunako and Kyohei gift exchange - she gets cookies, he gets a skull. And a start of a beautiful new friendrelationship is born!

Honestly, the first ep is just as fun as when I watched it ages ago. Nothing will ever be as good and as wildly out there as the manga but this is a good adaptation tbh.

Perfectly characterized mirror image warrior cousins (my first ever OTP!) which includes one of my favorite descriptions of Sirius through Bellatrix's eyes:

Sirius won't give Regulus the love he needs, so he seeks it from Severus instead.

Regulus is so split between Sirius and Severus and feels horrible, and all three of them feel horrible, but none of them can stop! It's so dark and twisted and desperate and compelling and hot. I'm feral for all of the dynamics depicted.

The Cost of Survival by @vdoshu doshu (M, 11k, Barty/Peter)

Peter likes the way that people look at him because he’s a Marauder. He likes the way that he’s invited along to get-togethers during the summers, the way that people pass him drinks and snacks at Quidditch after-parties, the way that people don’t laugh about him when he’s within earshot. He likes the way that everyone knows who he is, and pretends to like him. But he likes the way that Barty treats him even more.

It feels inappropriate to flail about this fic because of how sad it is - not even sad in a deliciously angsty way but sad in a realistic, human tragedy sort of way. Peter is portrayed so empathetically here - so flawed and human and afraid and desperate for love and affection and safety.

7 Loves/7Lives ( i called you brother seven times) by xylodemon (E, 7k, Regulus/Sirius)

This is a thing that never should have started.

Classic fic from 2006 which I’ve loved since my early fandom days which I consider a must-read Blackcest fic.

• Will left to camp when his mother stopped in new york and a monster attack very close to camp happened and the nearest satyr recognized him as a half-blood, dragging him with the other demigods (i headcannon one of them was Drew And that’s how those two met) and was introduced. He found his mother again and was able to stay there after some plot stuff i will flesh…later.

• Will did get bullied when he went to a public school for a short time in new Mexico for being/acting “Gay” and it stuck with him a bit as he was worried what camp half blood would be like. but the camp was very friendly and he adapted fairly quickly after his siblings supported his coming out

• Will is Bi to me, and i feel he figured out fairly easily. Naomi wasn’t as religious as her parents and her traveling gave her a wider world veiw, so she wasn’t exactly homophobic but didn’t really let will know gay people existed. he kinda just got context clues along the way.

• Will came out to naomi when he was 14 and she accepted him, after some suprise and tears. it was confusing for both of them but she wasn’t angry.

• Will goes though whipped cream like a maniac. he puts it on everything. everything. i don’t know where i got this headcannon from but it’s mine now it’s my baby his favorite dessert is literally just reddi whip striaght into his mouth and nico is always absoloutley horrified whenever he finds his boyfriend straight up drinking reddi whip out of the fridge after a late night at the hospital wing.

• Will has a very Work for what you get attitude and seeing his mother scrape by and work herself up made will similarly hardworking, independent and self sufficient. But he’s also a stubborn bastard who would rather take and remove a bullet then let someone help him either work wise or financially. It got even worse as he became the head of his cabin so much younger with so many younger kids to take care if

• Living in new mexico for as long as they did Naomi decided it was a good idea to have will learn at least some spanish when he was young and he picked up on it nicely, and decided to continue. he’s fairly fluent now and loves freaking Leo out all the time by talking to him in spanish when nobody else is around and he can’t prove it.

• Did also have a minor crush on percy, but mostly as a “woah look at that guy holy shit” and loved teasing annabeth about it (“If YOU love him so much why do you want us to get her together?” “nooo you guys are my OTP i’m not having that up just because he’s hot” <- COMPLETELY REAL INTERACTION THEY E HAD MHM TRUST ME BRO)

• Wants to pick up on some italian so he can do the same thing he does with leo to nico

Oooh. Okay: Permanently Stationed at the Temple Sifo-Dyas.

At first it felt sort of like sidelining my boy for something disability coded, and then I realize I was sort of missing the point? Not just in the fact of writing the Temple as a gigantic accessibility aide, but also in the roles of the many, many Jedi who stay there as a part of a flourishing and inclusive community that has many different important jobs to do beyond "go out and be a sword in the galaxy."

I actually wrote the central conflict in my fic Milk Run about this doublethink around what a Temple-based or nontraditional Jedi roles means and what they can do and add to the Order. That was me figuring that out in real time.

I don't ship it, really, but it's so weird and hot. I love how Maul looks like one of those alarming bright bugs you're not supposed to eat, but in an erotic way, and Obi-Wan is like "I don't know what's going on" and everyone is confused and covered in blood?? And I like the Jedi Maul AU version too, because Maul, poor Maul, his voice is so soft in TPM and he was never given any chance to have a good life.

Anyway, it's all very compelling. I actually have legitimately never read anything Obimaul. And that sounds like a joke like I'm goofing on the fact that I have read a lot of it, but I really haven't. Maybe I should. Maybe it would change me. Or fuck me up more idk

21) a fandom you're not active in anymore but that you still really like

A Song of Ice and Fire. That's where I was for part of the time I was taking my little gentleman's intermission from Star Wars. It's where I learned to write such long disgusting essays on even more rancid topics.

It was a real wild west of a fandom. I remember this one time I was in the middle of some big comment war with a really combative dude over Tyrion's trial and at a certain point I just sort of politely and nicely excused myself from it. So he private messages me to apologize for his behavior and getting too steamed up about the topic because "he, too, had been falsely accused of murder." Ahh, good! Reasonable! :D Another time, I made some benign comment on another thread about how Jon Snow's decision to sleep with Egret as collateral for her vouching for him as a true Wildling would read much different if the genders were reversed. A different guy private messaged me to say I'd get what was coming to me on January 6th. AND SURE ENOUGH, the failed insurrection happened the next day!

Sometimes I wonder how that guy is doing.

i might've years ago, so let's go again! i'm gonna answer this question as only NSFW/kink related, otherwise the list would be way too long haha

alright let's start with the obvious: ParviII is and always will be my #1 one ship, even when I dip in and out of the fandom a lot (i feel the term OTP is super outdated these days? but if there was one ship i could use it with it's them...)

so obviously i'm gonna say Talking Body and Payment and Payback by @sparxwrites. because. you know. how can i not. oh yeah, Good Vibrations is also a classic. hiii sparx, i'm sorry for picking your older fics, i just have such a bias. they've written a ton of great stuff over the years though, so go give the account a peak! there's something for everyone, especially if you like darker stuff.

...speaking of accounts with a lot of content who lurk around here, shoutout to @pawpunkao3. lmpᴇarI is one of my favorite ships, and they're still such a rarepair somehow?? anyways I think about Between Bedrock and a Hard Place at least once a week tbh. A New Religion That'll Bring You To Your Knees is fantastic, and i have a soft spot for I Spy (even tho i didn't watch too much empires). again, another author with a whole arsenal under their belt, so don't just take my word for it and check the rest of his fics!

back to lmpᴇarI being a rarepair... @thatstoomuchsoup has Chicken Soup for the Soulbounds (okay it's more pearI-centric but they're both there) and is another blog that specializes in some of my kinks and these fandoms. same with @anon-teddy's content, gotta give a shoutout to full. this is also making me realize i haven't sought out enough poly S0up Group or GᴇmpuIse/PᴇarIgem fics...maybe i'll get back to you on that...

speaking of lᴀds, if you follow me on main, you know i got into Bᴀnᴀna Bᴜs Sqᴜᴀd just last year (I'M SORRY, OKAY, DON'T @ ME-) you'd think getting into an old fandom late would mean a ton of great smut fics, right? to be honest, i haven't found many that i care for, but maybe i'm just picky... however, i remember your lips, they're the ones i miss, and smoke in your lungs, your lips on mine are SO GODDAMN GOOD i'm not even mad it's only those two i like because i could reread them 20 times. god. such fun characterization. shame the author orphaned them because i badly wanna read more of their stuff.

this is the part where you go, spirit, do you read anything besides (mᴄ)yt fandoms??? and i go, not really.............well, sort of. i like 0verwatch! and M0icy!! Reciprocity is a delightful PWP long fic. i'm also not really an omegaverse guy, but Water Me has such a good take on it i fell in looove.
