Mick Fleetwood talks about touring with the Stones and meeting Brian in 1964:
"The Cheynes recorded a few singles, gained momentum around London, and in 1964 did a tour with the Rolling Stones just as their star began to rise....That tour was magical to me. The Stones really took care of us, looking after us like little brothers, and that is when and how I got to know Brian Jones quite well. I feel lucky about it because Brian was a special soul, in many ways far too sensitive and perceptive for this world. A brilliant, fluent multi-instrumentalist, he was the one who founded the Rolling Stones and he had the creative vision that helped them to evolve organically from a mop-top blues-pop group into the mystical rock gods they became--something that many people today might not realise.
Brian had a huge heart and we became friends very quickly. We'd sit and talk about the Blues for hours, trading stories we'd heard about the recording of the songs we both loved. Later, Brian and I became even better friends when I was dating the young beauty who became my first wife, Jenny Boyd. Our social circles became intertwined and we saw each other all the time. Jenny and I used to go around to Brian's flat to hang out and even to participate in the seances he'd hold at his new cottage in Fulham. At the time Brian had a girlfriend called ZuZu [Zou Zou] and the two of them would pull out the Ouija board and we'd attempt to communicate with the dead. Peter Bardens' father had written a book about ghosts [Ghosts and Hauntings by Dennis Bardens] that we had all read, so we were scared and fascinated at the same time.
I'm far from the first to have said so, but I'd like to confirm that Brian Jones was, without question, one of the sweetest human beings and the most visionary musician I've ever met. He's yet another who died too young, at twenty-seven, the same age as far too many of his peers--Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, as well as Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse in the years to come."

Ease of Ghost Summoning of Dead Rock Stars:
[long list of people who it would feel inappropriate and tasteless to even insinuate have ghosts]
jimmy page (technically not dead but potentially still accomplishable and definitely will be after the fact)
jim morrison (feasible but you'd probably have to do some complicated bacchic ritual naked in the woods like the english majors you knew in college wanted to)
george harrison (shouldn't be possible but paul is keeping his spirit from reincarnating)
bob dylan (also not dead but could be summoned to a crossroads with the right harmonica solo. this may also summon george harrison by association)
syd barrett (not the real one, the vengeful tulpa roger invented in his head to haunt him; summoning requires no effort but your own internalized guilt)
david bowie (depends on exactly what kind of curse jimmy page put on him)
elvis presley (really easy but no one cares)
john lennon (already appears to various loved ones and maybe also liam gallagher. if paul finally pulled out a ouija board it would cause such a ghostbusters-level event they'd have to call the winchesters to fix it)

Byler & Possession Plots
Reading the show through more of Men, Women & Chainsaws
When talking about occult horror in her book Men, Women and Chainsaws, Carol J. Clover writes—
"On the face of it, the occult film is the most "female" of horror genres, telling as it is regularly does tales of women or girls in the grip of the supernatural. But behind the female "cover" is always the story of a man in crisis."
One of the examples that Clover provides is also one of the most popular possession stories— William Peter Blatty's novel and William Friedkin's film The Exorcist. Little Regan Macneil may have been the one possessed, but as the title suggests, the story is really about a man, the exorcist.
I do believe that season twos possession plot does a little more for the possessed than the examples Clover gives in her book, it is interesting that it does follow a similar formula to other possession plots, in that while the story is definitely about the possessed, it's also about the male character that sticks by their side.
Tumblr media
So using Clover's book as a guide, I wanted to look again at season two's possession plot and see what it's saying for both Will and Mike's story, how it aligns with other possession stories, how it improves upon them, how it falls into similar pitfalls, and what is reveals about Byler.
The show does do a little better than other possession plots in that it does focus on the perspective of the possessed, Will, and how all of this is affecting him personally. We hear a little bit from Regan in The Exorcist, although the focus is centered much more on how her possession is affecting her mother and of course, her exorcist. The story centers around her, but it’s not really hers. Will’s possession feels a lot more like his story.
As for Mike, he starts the season grieving the loss of El and likely feeling guilt for her “death.” She “died” saving Mike, and Mike was unable to save her. There's a strong theme of heroism at play here. Mike (innocently) put the expectation onto El that she was a superhero. Mike's idea of heroism relates to the ability to perform impossible "Yoda" like tasks, such as lifting objects and killing monsters with your mind. As such, Mike doesn't recognize his own heroism, such as bringing El in and showing her kindness and friendship. This insecurity is later confirmed in season 4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mike's story doesn't really start rolling until he goes to check on Will. There, he's able to find purpose and finds his own way to be a hero. maybe without realizing it, he is able to save someone. Mike was there to help Will by offering emotional support, as well as aid him in finding some agency in the situation.
The possession for this season along with the El/Mike/Will triangle reminds me of a film that Clover discusses called Witchboard but with a few key differences. In the film, a woman named Linda is possessed by a spirit after messing with a Ouija Board she got from her ex Brandon, leading Linda’s boyfriend Jim to find a way to free her. The film ends with Jim and Linda getting married.
Similar to The Exorcist, Linda is the possessed person but the story isn’t really hers, it’s about Jim and his arc to becoming a more emotionally open boyfriend. In fact, the emotional core of the film is actually between Jim and his relationship to Brandon, whom Jim reveals is actually an old childhood friend until they had a falling out. Clover notes a particularly homoerotically charged scene in a motel room where Jim and Brandon are able to talk out some of their feelings.
While the possessed person is now Will, the character split is the same. El is not a passive character at all, but her story is still almost entirely split from the boys. She starts off the season missing Mike, but similar to Mike, she chooses to leave him, and her story really kicks off when she seeks out Mama and Kali. Both of them may have started the season thinking about the other, yet they choose to take their stories in different directions.
So maybe that’s why the end of the season feels like the end of Witchboard, which Clover described as the film's “pale, heterosexual ending” where Jim and Linda get married. The season ends with El and Mike at the Snow Ball, which to be fair is set up enough— this is making good on the promise that Mike made to El in the last season. But Will, who has spent most of the season by Mike’s side, is left entirely to the wayside. He gets his own dance partner, but it’s a nameless character who calls him his mean nickname. Mike gets to dance with El, Lucas gets his dance with Max, and Dustin discovers some self confidence when he dances with Nancy. Every ending feels like something that was someone built up— except for Will’s. Will didn’t show any interest in Snow Ball girl before, or any girl at all. It feels unsatisfactory.
Similar to other possession plots, it does fall into the similar pitfall where during most of the last third of the season, Will is barely even there at all. He spends most of his time asleep, and when he is awake— similar to Regan in the last bit of The Exorcist— he’s no longer Will.
And maybe that’s why the shed scene feels so hard hitting. Mike reminds Will of a moment where Will had agency, when he chose to be Mike’s friend. And as a result, he’s able to break through.
Tumblr media
To me, that moment feels more like a culmination of both of their arcs for this season, way less than the Snow Ball ending. Mike takes action and calls out to Will, and in an act of agency, Will answers.
There's more interesting stuff from the chapter that I decided not to include here, and I honestly suggest that you go read the book yourself. It's super interesting and highly informative.
Oh, and happy Day 3 of Bylerween 🎃 @bylerween2023

Jemíma : Why?
Eva: Hesh fiddled with an ouija board and cursed ours.

Why and-- WHY was Jemíma given this task to look after them? lmao.
Jemíma: Knocks on the Captain's common room, along with the 4 grown ass adults as Elias answers, opening the door Elias: "Oh hello-- You don't like in a good condition, LT.?" Henry passes by, waving in the background, (SIR WE NEED TO TALK), sipping a glass of wine with side eye because he knows what she has come here for. Jemíma: "I can't watch your chiquitos all day and night, Captain. Please take them back. I'm not even capable of working alone, so please" Elias: "I'm sorry if my boys caused you any trouble, and I understand that completely." Hesh and Logan were just staring at their father, unwilling to leave at that moment. patooties Walkers Jemíma: "No, it has nothing to do with the trouble the niños have caused. It's..." *FEW MOMENTS BACK IN HER ROOM* Logan and Eva are watching the scene from their beds, and Hesh is sighing and making a facepalm as he looks at the imaginary camera similiar to Jim from The Office. Quick-bite reviews: Witchboard (1986) dir. Kevin Tenney
When Linda's ex Brandon shows up at her party with a ouija board she's immediately intrigued and new boyfriend Jim annoyed. As Linda spends more and more time with the board Jim and Brandon are forced into an uneasy alliance to save her from the ghost it summons.
I was going to give this a super short, middlingly positive review. It's self-aware without being self-effacing and has a fun aesthetic and acting choices, but also very 80s horror so misogynistic, too many jumpscares, unnecessary nudity, and necessary but gross-to-me slasher stuff going on. Levels out to something decent but not worth writing home about, the end.
Tossing that review out the window... this movie fucking rules. I thought it had a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes because everyone agreed that it was just kinda meh, but I think it might be divisive between lovers and haters and I am a lover (well, a liker.) lt's intentionally funny without being a full-on horror comedy (at one point Brandon buys a second ouija board, and when he walks out of a SoCal witch shop with a ouija-board-shaped package Jim says "what's in there" then whines "aw man haven't we seen enough of these?") and it's genuinely interesting. We only actually see a ghost once, and it's the weakest part of the movie because the mise en scène- every camera trick, set piece, even music sting- is crafted around making the board itself look threatening. I'm obsessed with the fact that it slowly changes in appearance over the course of the runtime and no one ever mentions it; perfect use of my favorite horror trope, especially for an era and genre that like to loudly over-explain things. Tenney was really going full-throttle insane with the writing but still knew just when to pull back, and not only does that make the board work it saves the mystery element. A couple of the (many!) twists are immediate 'yep okay guessed it two minutes in when Brandon started explaining what a ouija board does,' but some of the reveals and a series of rapid-fire decisions Jim makes at the end had me going.
Buy a ticket? I know I should say no, but the last 5 minutes made me clap like a seal.

October Fic Round Up
A big month!! A spooky month!!
Of course we start off with an update to Fiction Is For Fools, Hector and Heard have a late-night conversation. It's like old times, but it's new times (22/34, wip, currently 23k)
And then we've got a little fic for the characters of the fatt live game of You Can Check Out Any Time You Like, But You Can Never Leave, with livin' it up a post-episode indoor jim & gabbi friendship fic (sfw, 2k)
spiritualist medium!es does a private session with a very infatuated lyke inspired by this norman rockwell illustration of people flirting over an ouija board in reach out (nsfw, 4.9k)
in absolutely HUGE personal news, I finished a wip that was, for real, over ten years old: that's right, if you knew me from back in the les mis days, i finally finished my les mis werewolf au Blue Moon (sfw, 32k, 8/8)
a little peak into Cassander's nightmares in through my fingers to the deep (sfw, 2k)
switching it up to something a little more cheerful with a look at the first annual Blue Channel Halloween Party in party 2nite @ bc, rsvp capt. kb (sfw, partial palisade/phrygian, 4k)
and lastly, because a while ago I watched A Cure For Wellness (2016) and was, as I often am, a case of Becoming Fixated On A Minor Aspect Of The Movie That's Not Really A Part Of The Movie and wrote a fic in the pov of hannah's unnamed, dead-before-the-movie-starts mother in a wandering cenotaph (sfw but with mentions/references to the non-con elements of the movie, 2k)

Thrill, squash, sweater, and firewood! 🎃 👻🍁🍂
gvskdjsk thank you for the ask babes!! 🥺👻🍂🎃
thrill—if you were in a horror movie, would you be the first to die, the comic relief, the skeptic, the smart one, the last one standing, or the killer?
i wouldn't even be in the horror film cos at the first sign of anything shifty, i'm out. like. i'm sprinting in the opposite direction and picking up anything i think i can defend myself with as i'm running.
i have a couple of funny stories about times i've been scared shitless, but have i ever told y'all about the time i toured a haunted/abandoned jail in Charleston, SC? if not, remind me to cos it's funny as hell and also tells you exactly which motherfucker i'd be.
squash— are there any traditions you participate in during this time of year?
usually will watch one spooky thing every night of October. this year it's been binging Ghost Files/Unsolved Supernatural and Stranger Things cos i don't have time for a whole film.
sweater— what is your favorite autumn dessert?
love a good apple pie. pumpkin loaf cake is always good. i had an apple cider bundt cake this morning from the coffee shop on my block which was delightful.
basically anything that's like "apples & cinnamon" or "pumpkin spice", i will foam at the mouth for it.
firewood— have you ever played with a ouija board?
it seems like i definitely have. but if i'm remembering correctly, it was a homemade one that a friend of mine made out of a pizza box lol so not sure how accurate that was. our ghost's name was jim or something? and that's about all i remember.

This girl's about to go off gushing over Freaky!
Spoilers for the movie. And warning for those that don't like horror movies.
So almost every single death scene in the movie is an homage to a classic!
The opening titles and the killer's mask is a reference to Friday the Thirteenth
The way the last girl in the beginning dies and how the killer tilts his head is a reference to the original Halloween
The shop teacher's death is a slight homage to Saw
Knife coming through the door in her best friend's house is a reference to the Shining
The chainsaw scene is an obvious reference to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The guy that gets a hook through his eye is a reference to I know what you did last summer
And a stake through the heart is probably a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Share any other Easter eggs you saw by reblogging or adding it in the tags

Yes I like the idea of VK being in college. What do you think he's studying? I think it would be fun if he was doing a major in psychology, and one of the units they have for the semester deals with parapsychology, which is basically the study of alleged paranormal phenomena, like reincarnation or telekinesis. So they're supposed to do a project on this. And VK's group decide to experiment with an Ouija board, trying to contact someone recently dead, just to prove that none of this is real. And they end up proving that it is VERY MUCH real, because they accidentally summon Joe. 🤣
How do Joe's demon friends end up on earth though? Are they already there, haunting other houses when Joey is summoned? Or is it VK's ritual that summons not one, not two, but four-five demons? 🤭😭🤣
ohh I like that for how they end up summoning Joey, that they're trying to prove it all bullshit xD
Hnm, see I see Joey, after being summoned, able to cross from plain to plain? So Ben, Jimmy and co are all in the devil realm... I guess hell, but they've been summoned before and they're trying to advise Joey. Maybe Ben or Jim are like 'Get them to do this ritual, I'll come to earth and help you' and that's how we end up with multiple demons hovering around VK :P

The Chill Factor (1993)
Tumblr media
The Chill Factor is Evil Dead but on snowmobiles and 200 times lamer than that sounds. This film has no sense of humor about itself. That might be ok if it delivered the horror or the gore but it doesn’t. The most interesting thing about this movie is that it’s told in flashbacks. The events take place in the then-futuristic year 2000 (or maybe it’s 1999, they say it’s on the edge of the new millennium) and the person recounting the events is doing so thirty years later, which means it’s all set in the year 2030. Not that interesting? Neither is the rest of the movie.
Tom (Aaron Kjenaas), his fiancée Jeannie (Dawn Laurrie), younger sister Karen (Connie Snyder), her boyfriend Chris (David Fields), and their friends Ron (Jim Cagle) and Lissa (Eve Montgomery) are having a winter snowmobile vacation when Tom crashes into a tree. Severely injured, his friends bring him to the closest shelter, the abandoned Camp Saint Dominic. Inside, they discover a makeshift Ouija board-like device. After playing with it, they experience supernatural events.
The Chill Factor lasts 85 minutes and it feels like an eternity before anything substantial happens. First, we have to sit through performances from bar patrons so dreadful they sound like robots reading a script for the first time. Then, we have to wait for the ample footage of people on snowmobiles to end. Finally, the future victims - whom you’ll have trouble telling apart despite the ample clumsy exposition telling you over and over who’s who and why they matter to each other - make it to the cabin - I mean camp. Then, these idiots find the Ouija board thing: a big disc with a spinning arrow and eyeball in the middle. Hmm. Weird. You’d think an abandoned religious summer camp everyone stays you should avoid wouldn’t have that sort of thing just lying around. I guess the councilors didn’t bother to pack it up when they left in a hurry all those years ago. Nope, nothing shady going on here! Let’s play with it despite Jeannie’s reservations! When bad things happen, it’s not unfortunate; it’s just the inevitable coming true.
Produced and directed by Christopher Webster, The Chill Factor begins with a flashforward to Tom’s accident. Remember, the whole story is told in flashbacks. Anyone could tell you what’s wrong with that decision. For a long time, I thought the accident was a traumatic memory replaying in Jeannie's head; the reason why she’s so apprehensive about all the foolishness the boys want to do out in the cold. No. It’s just bad editing. Actually, it was most likely an attempt by editor Amy Summer to get the audience interested in what's happening. It's an eternity before anything engaging actually takes place.
If you have any puns about snow or snowmobiles you’ll have every opportunity to use them and there are a couple of rather unintentionally hilarious deaths. I’m not sure which is funnier, the one where the ceiling fan somehow manages to cut the person who clearly isn’t standing anywhere near it, the accidental hanging, or the killer icicle. The ending is good for some laughs as well. It involves an innocent bystander and they would have a hell of a story to tell the next day. Then, the picture just sort of ends on a “huh?” note that doesn’t make any sense. It’s supposed to be all spooky in a “but… the coach driver drowned fifteen years ago!” note but merely raises more questions.
There might actually be some value in The Chill Factor. I watched it on my own and detested it but with some friends and a couple of drinks? It could be a blast. I'm not sure if I'm curious enough to try, however. (June 2, 2022)

With a bromance, romance, love triangle, and a demonic spirit, this week’s Decades of Horror 80s feature has it all, including Tawny Kitaen. Writer/director Kevin Tenney birthed a minor franchise with his Ouija board nightmare original, Witchboard (1986), spawning many sequels and the promise of a remake in 2024. The Grue-Crew brave the supernatural shenanigans to give their thoughts and retrospective on this now cult-classic entry.
At the time of this writing, Witchboard is available for streaming from Shudder, Tubi, and Freevee, as well as PPV from multiple sources. It is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray disk from Scream Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by . . . someone, will be Cujo (1983), from the Stephen King novel, directed by Lewis Teague, and starring the incomparable Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro! It must be Halloween!
