it’s been weeks since i started obsessing over the filming locations of the series trying to figure out if the Theerapanyakul mansion is in fact a hotel or a mix of more locations like hotels + luxury apartments and whatnot and i don’t know maybe someone got there first maybe everyone already know but i didn’t until today so i went all out cosplaying kim trying to find the location wandering around bangkok with google maps like a real pro kim would be so proud 

so,,, we all already knew from the trailer that the mansion should be located in front of the Deutsche Bank building but i didn’t think that the sets for the mansion would be there as well i kinda took for granted that they would take outdoor footage and then they would be filming elsewhere mostly because of budget 

then in episode 5 while kinn and his father are playing chess we get to see a different building on the background that is the Mahatun Plaza and in the picture below you can see both the Mahatun Plaza and the Deutsche Bank building in the background while the pool is the same pool where we got mermaid!porsche and the doors on the sides are located where we see arm, pol, pete and porsche coming back home after the nights out with Tankhun and where in episode 5 we see porsche coming back home and finding kinn in the lounge asleep

watching that second building with its name right on the front i finally decided to go on my little quest on google maps trying find where they filmed AND I ACTUALLY FOUND IT! it’s a hotel and it’s called Rosewood Bangkok and i actually got that it’s the one because when you search for it on google images the first picture that appears is the one with the pool from this scene with tankhun and you can even see the Deutsche Bank building in the backgroud as well in both pictures

i later went on the hotel’s website as one does (also because i wanted to know how much booking a room would cost but unfortunately you can’t make reservations at the moment) and i found some other pictures of the places we’ve already seen in the episodes aired so far 

EXHIBIT A: the entrance we see at the very beginning of the series that is the same as we see in episode 2 when porsche has his elegant catwalk

EXHIBIT B: the infamous lounge that we see while the two families are having their meeting (and it is the same that we see in episode 1 when kinn comes back home after failing to get porsche to accept the job and he finds his father and chan playing chess) 

EXHIBIT C: this some sort of bar/private lounge where in episode 2 chan reports back about porsche failing the tests to kinn

also on the website you can actually virtually walk in the rooms and there’s a virtual tour for kinn’s suite too which is more like an apartment and we have: 

the lounge/living room that we see in episode 1 when kinn says to porsche ‘your life is mine now’ for the first time and behind there’s the couch where in episode 2 when kinn’s reading that book about coffee and tankhun asks him to switch bodyguards

the bathtub scene in episode 3 when kinn rejects the company of his friend because he’s still thinking about what happened to porsche when he was shot

the infamous condom+lube scene in episode 4 when we see kinn’s bedroom

the aftermath of the kiss in episode 4 

and finally the scene in episode 5 when porsche asks permission to go with thankun to kinn 

(also lol i think i’m pretty certain that kinn’s apartment in the mansion is the same as So from Our Days for those who are watching)

i can’t find more pictures of the inside of the hotel so i don’t know if the bit where we see the elevator is in this hotel or if it is another location but i’m pretty sure it’s all in there + i don’t think that the zone of the mansion where’s the koi pond is in the same hotel but it could be i guess

I follow your posts for a while now. They really making my day! Want to thank you for that first.

So I just wanted to add some thoughts to the subbing discussion here. Thanks to you I just started another Love by Change re-watch. As you mentioned in another post the Youtube and Viki subs in Englisch are quite good here. (For YT JayBL‘s english subs are just amazing just adoring the subber until now.)

But I just realised again how great the german ones are! The subbing group not only explained the usage of P‘, khrab and sawadee . They also managed to convey the more informal/partly rude way of talking by Ae and the more formal way by Pete. That‘s so astonishing! That‘s also why LBC is one of the rare cases of BL I watch with german subs. (Well besides there aren‘t so many BL‘s with Ger sub for now. But Viki is on it.)

Actually the ger and eng LBC subs on YT inspired me to provide ger subs myself for Gameboys and partly UWMA. It wasn‘t an easy task, but so fulfilling. It made me quite sensible for subs now. The ones on Netflix for example are my personal nightmare. It seems to me the translators there are generalising a lot.

I was thinking, if with the existence of fan-made subs, so people who care to explain linguistics (like honorific’s, idioms, pronouns, etc.) in that specific cultural background and even keep them in the translation, a new group of bl consumers are growing up now, accepting the mixture of language or even create in the bl-fandom bubble a new transnational language? (Sorry the german in me got the better part of me here on sentence length‘s…)

I love this! And yes it does feel like it’s happening. 

I makes me think about adoption of the term tsundere into the lexicon around anime in the 80s and 90s and now geeky fandom, or kishotenketsu among the literary sets. 

There’s a lot of niche fandoms that adopt terms, and those terms become global lexicon. 

It happens in academia and in concentrated work environments as well. You get to the point of specialization where you can have whole conversations with someone, using entirely technical terminology (think about programming languages, for example) as a lingo localized to a subject matter (rather than region). I’ve had these conversations with colleagues who don’t speak English. Like the verbs are different, but the terms are global. This can happen at conference or a convention or amongst staff on a movie set, or in a post production room. The way sound tech people talk to each other is like... whoah, what did you just say?!? 

I can get this way around BL tropes where I just throw a term out there (like pratfall kiss, or there’s only one bed) and I just assume everyone here knows what the hell I’m talking about. 

I’m sure the linguists have a technical term for this kind of language, like a combination of auxlang + jargon, but I don’t know it. 

It makes me think a lot about the IRL evolution of Wittgenstein's private language, and how his (argued) innate unintelligible nature is counteracted by the moment of adoption into a small group. But that an outsider unfamiliar with the source subject matter would still hear it as primarily gobbledygook. (One of my minors is in epistemology.) 

I think an even bigger version of the specific aspect you’re zeroing in on, is already happening around Korean via Hallyu (especially Kpop & Kdramas). And not just phrases like “stan” and “bias” and “bias wrecker” or sasaeng, hyung, and maknae, but whole linguistic concepts that run adjacent to these ideas around social structure and fandom.  

I'm finding, just in normal every day conversation with native English speakers (yes, this is the kind of thing I talk about regularly in my workspace) that I have to explain what a "linguistic register" means less and less these days, particularly to those younger than me. 

It's kinda awesome. 

I suspect Hallyu is partly behind this, but also the general nature of growing up with globalization and the internet age. (Not to mention my own propensity to gravitate towards geeky types who are fans of more niche aspects of a greater fandom, and thus are, by their nature, increasingly global in an effort to connect with those few others who share their obsession.)  

Here’s an example of a jargon rich sentence:

I don’t really stan a tsundere uke who's the maknae of the found family group, I like it when they flip the power play of the age dynamics or make him more of a sunshine cinnamon roll, although I forgive everything for Taiwanese chemistry and an “only one bed” trope. 

Now you can tell me whether you understood it or if I cross hatched too many of my fandom jargons at once.

Compilation of Bad Kisses in BLs (Part 2)

BY POPULAR DEMAND (like 2 people and @gunsatthaphan) I WILL CONTINUE THIS PAINFUL JOURNEY TO DISSECT THE WORST OF WORST KISSES I’VE SEEN IN THESE SHOWS.

LET’S GET IT!

1. The Tasty Florida

it’s giving “i don’t know how to kiss” energy and at this point, i’m not even surprised. disappointed but not surprised. not only there was no real substance in this one, the tension was WASTED because how can you explain this horror? it makes no sense. the scene where eunkyu is helping haewon to put on the apron was scrumptious but they just gave me NOTHING with that kiss. next.

2. Given

the thing with japan is that it’s always gonna give you good plots, you can’t go wrong with them but if there’s a kiss, it’s always gonna be bad. that’s why i think they choose NOT to add one because look. what is that. can you even call that a kiss? and it’s just sad because the anime version was GOOD (according to a lot of people) but this one didn’t live up to the expectations.

3. My Sweet Dear

see because this one had the potential. hell, it it even had the chemistry (that scene when they first met with the apron and shit? GOOD FOOD) but you know how it is in korea: no money for workshops. the show was good, it really was but man, why can’t they deliver a good kiss? it’s like watching two walls kissing. it’s not fair.

4. Dear Doctor, I’m coming for soul (KheetaNathee)

this happened in ep 10 and the series has 12 episodes, so can you really call them a couple? their first kiss was a spur of the moment thing when one of them was drunk and the second kiss was censored, at this time and age. so this is it. the show in general was interesting, a little overdramatic but watchable. however, them? they really didn’t add much to the mix.

5. Tinted with you.

can you really ask that much from a show that has 8 episodes with a 10min run time, $5 and a dream? not really. however, this cemented the idea that we do like period dramas in bls and that we also like kpop idols starring in them. so, yeah, the kiss was shit and the plot could have been expanded but i loved junhee and i really fell in love with his acting, so a round of applause for him. hopefully you can kiss better in your next show, bestie.

6. Paint with love (NuengTharn)

i wanna tell yoon he’s such a bad kisser. that he has to give it up. not only that but he’s always paired with people that don’t help his cause either. either that or he doesn’t know how to choose his roles. it’s sad.

7. Star in my mind (KluenNuea)

i have several bones to pick from this show and the kiss(es) are one of those. not only this was directed by new and felt like a studio wabi sabi production, it felt more of the same stuff we’ve seen so far. there’s nothing remarkable about this show (if you girlies like it, you do you). what triggers me is that joong did excellent in the kissing department in 2 moons 2 and then here, that experience just disappeared. this is what happens when you pair a moderately experienced actor with a rookie. 

8. Ocean likes me

i will open a gofundme that will be dedicated to find and hire acting coaches that are not afraid of success and will train these actors on their intimate scenes. this can’t keep going on, korea, we need to do better than this. good show tho.

9. Our days

this show was 12 episodes of absolutely nothing, the plot was all over the place. boring and slow, hella slow. one of the leads had more chemistry with another actor than with his on screen partner. that’s how bad it was. this was on the very last episode, 5min before it ended. yes, they had sex. out of nowhere. like this show. next.

10. Senpai this can’t be love

it’s like i said. japan always brings the most amazing plots out there, the comedy is out of this world and the quality is good enough to watch. they could have the number 1 spot for their bls. problem is, most of their shows have shitty kisses. like this one.

this silly little series was good, i liked it. there are never enough office romances. it had age gap and power imbalance that could have gone sideways. but now, it was handled good. but this kiss felt very underwhelming. that’s where it went kaput for me.

11. Fish upon the sky (both couples)

i’m gonna be real with you here. the dialogues in this show were smart in the sense that the show itself was calling out a lot of bullshit we have seen in previous bls (the shippers, for example). it had its issues ofc; i’m not gonna talk about them because that’s not the point of this post. the point is the godawful kisses we got, especially with neolouis. this is gonna haunt me forever (i would say they got better in the eclipse but i will talk about that later). 

honestly, this show was a classic in the sense that had all the classic tropes some of us are starting to hate (the use of the character going to the bathroom and saying they are pooping is getting on my nerves and i’m glad the later shows stopped this madness). the story? 6.5/7. the kisses? -10/10.

12. I want to see only you.

like i said before. japan knows how to their plots right, they just don’t know how to deliver a kiss. which is kind of sad because it takes impact from the show. like i really want to enjoy all of it but if the kiss it’s ugly or looks like the actors are not even into it, it’s very disappointing. show itself was a 10/10 tho.

13. Once again

i’m once again asking korea to please PLEASE invest in some workshops because this is ridiculous. i get that the budget is low but come on. give me something more than this. like it had time travel ffs (and a very open ending). they got the materials but the execution was abysmal.

14. Takara-kun to Amagi-kun

like i said: japan knows how to do plot but on the kissing department they are lacking. idk, i mean, i guess that it was kind of the point of this show. two high schoolers that get together and everything is awkward around each other and so, it’s not a surprise that the kisses are weird too. but it’s not just this one, it’s the majority of the bls produced in japan. good plots but almost nothing in the intimacy department.

15. The Eclipse (both couples)

ofc i have to slander the biggest show right now. i have to be fair and like the truth is these kisses were fishy. one was supposed to be a sleeping kiss and the other idk because that was the moment where akk and aye finally agreed to be a couple so you would think their kiss would be slightly better (but akk was living in a constant state of panic up until this point, so yeah). still, they have to be here

they do get better after this tho (especially neolouis, i thought this was all that i was going to get). 

in all seriousness, this doesn’t take away how AMAZING this series was. yes, there were some loose ends here and there, ep 11 was kind of weirdly edited and it did deserve at least two more episodes but overall, it was such a good show with amazing actors, a good script, the music was great, it had everything to be that bitch right now and the most important part is that no one died at the end like the trailer suggested. nothing but praises, honestly.

Our Days - What Even is the Music?

***Disclaimer! I’m but a humble couch potato. I am not a musician. I play half of three instruments and .005% of another one. I’ll let y’all try to figure out what that means. But I am not some infallible music genius. Please form your own opinions.

Okay so my theory about the weird music involves So. I’m not entirely sure how to put it into words but it’s basically focused on So and his mood and his feelings and his music taste. Mim’s music has a more Studio Ghibli-esque feel to it. Everything weird so far has centered around So, who happens to be the musician so it fits. Then this week had normal music because the focus of this episode was Saint and his feelings with So pushed off to the side. Of course So was still in it and even announced his feelings for the first time. But it was to Saint, who remained the focal point for the entire episode. I’m guessing once we start focusing on So again, it will become weird once more.

I know that I’m in the minority with this opinion, but I loved Our Days. The whole show, including the soundtrack. Now, don’t get me wrong, the soundtrack is fucking weird. I have a theory about the soundtrack though. The soundtrack specifically matches characters rather than the scenes. Each character gets their own music opposed to each scene having a song to help set the tone. This method will absolutely not work for everyone, but it worked really well for me. It took a little bit of adjusting, but I ended up loving how this show did it.

The soundtrack only seems weird when the show focuses on Soh. The soundtrack is just a normal soundtrack when the show focuses on Mon or Saint. Soh is just a special case. First of all, Soh is a musician so it makes sense that his character pulls different genres from all over the world. He is also the one that ends up going abroad so of course his music pushes the boundaries.

Mon’s music is what most people would consider normal for a soundtrack. It’s Studio Ghibli-esque and it reflects Mon’s personality perfectly. He is a melancholy person. So when you have two main characters with wildly different music, it makes the whole show’s soundtrack seem really out there and can pull you out of the show entirely.

But Rae, I hear you all saying, you said a good soundtrack shouldn’t pull you out of the show. I know, I KNOW! This soundtrack works for me, but it’s not going to work for the majority of people. I wouldn’t call this a good soundtrack specifically because it does pull you out of the show. It does ultimately distract from what’s going on in the show and with the characters. And while I love it and I see what they were doing, I can acknowledge that the execution of it was...poor. But I love that they tried. And that’s why I won’t say it’s a bad soundtrack either. I can only settle that it’s weird and it’s really and truly going to depend on each person on whether or not that works or not.

I love SohMon. I love how Soh fell so hard and then felt so bad and rejected Mon out of fear of leaving him and how Mon fell so hard for him and Mon loved him back and Mon understood when Soh finally came back and confessed because Mon understands what it means to deny his own feelings...

I just adore them. My boys. I don't mind being unpopular, lol.

1. i’m watching manner of death and the sound quality is driving me mad. i tried on yt and then switched to we tv site and it still is not good. like it’s way too quiet (you can barely hear the background when they talk) or the music comes in and it gets too loud. i wonder if it’s me or if the mixing (?) got messed up. i’ve seen a few clips of other series (can’t name them of the top of my head) and just wanted to ask why does it happen? is it a budget problem or mic one or maybe copyright? or just honest mistake or my laptop is just weird.

2. how did the pairing in thai bls stared? like did they just randomly decided to pair the actors who did good together and keep casting them both for roles? because they got popular with fans or was it more planned and conscious effort to sell that?

side note just wanted to thank you for all of your commentaries and reviews and language posts. they make me super interested in the dynamics of characters and make me pay attention to stuff i normally wouldn’t. so thank you for making me a little bit more perceptive.

So far so good, it's a slow week, I got a lot of stuff out that I'm waiting to come home again with work, which means I am sitting around twiddling my thumbs doing busywork (as the gran would call it) and distracting myself on Tumblr.

At some point in the not too distant future a big project is gonna hit and I’m gonna disappear except for the weekly updates and y’all are gonna think I’m dead. 

Manner of Death = terrible sound production?

I think I remember it being pretty bad always. But then I watched MoD grey so everything was terrible, rips and all, and thre were random ads and threats of viruses. Count your blessings in that regard, trust me, it could be A LOT worse. 

I’m just getting around to a rewatch on WeTV but I’m not expecting much. I’ll let you know if I feel like the sounds is significantly worse than I remember. 

Honestly, with very few exceptions Thailand is TERRIBLE with sound, even worse when they go on location. Their looping is bad (if they bother). I mean we JOKE about how terrible they are with boom mics so much that Our Days referenced it. 

For goodness sake they use wired mics for intimacy scenes, and cheap wireless mics at WINDY locations. It’s just *throws hands into air.* 

Speculation is there just aren’t any sound techs in Thailand. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. 

How do Thai BL Pairs Happen? How did it start?

SOTUS started it. Ironically, we get to blame SingtoKrist. 

OffGun made it popular and caused everyone to realize it was possible to make more money as branded pair (sponsorship deals). 

But it was MewGulf who actually broke the internet. They caused Harper/Vogue something fashiony (?) Thailand’s website to crash when they appeared on the cover together, also won best kiss Asia against all the het couples. 

Originally I believe it was unplanned, but KirstSingto did so well on variety shows and with fan meets when promoting SOTUS and then SOTUS S they got given their own travel-esk show (by GMMTV). Say what you like about Krist he’s really good on a “yes, and.” Then GMMTV started to just sort of do a hard push with any pair they could, to try to get them to stick and recreate this magic. 

For the first few years 2016-2019 or so, the boys were just farting around and not really intentional about it. I think as the IRL shipping got worse (especially with MewGulf and ZeeSaint), expectations started to be different from within the industry (as well as from outsiders). Things have changed after multiple fissures and problems with pairs disbanding (and this having a career impact). 

Sometimes GMMtV’s intentional approach works (EarthMix) sometimes it fades away (PodKhaotung) sometimes it’s purposefully made-over by the studio (BrightWin). 

Career-minded and more savvy actors and managers are now, understandably, both wary and intentional in their approach to pairing up (and IF they will have an approach at all). Watching how Nanon and Ohm handled it for Bad Buddy was eye opening. (Ohm’s previous pairing from Make It Right seems to have left in industry for... not great reasons... So I’ve always assumed Ohm is relatively jaded and definitely guarded about BL.)

On the flip side, indie pairs started to form with specifically an eye towards acting together as the leads in dramas (e.g. KaownahTurbo and SantaEarth).

I keep meaning to do an update on all the pairs, but the skinship side of BL fandom makes me very uncomfortable so I keep avoiding it.

I don't think Our Days was bad, but it a prime example of how improved cinematography and coloring can't fix a show that is just truly too long. Mon, especially isn't served by the ambiguous frowning they put him through for so long.

The cast is also just too large and unwieldy for all the threads that go unresolved.

It was interesting to see Thailand do a melancholy show. I see what this show wants to be, but it just doesn't hit it for me.

not seeing saint and mon at the end of the series was kind of humbling, yk i’m so used to getting what I want that when the main character doesn’t choose who I want them to choose i gotta just accept it, and i realized that i am not good at accepting the main char choosing the guy i did not want him to choose.
