“hey momma.” you say with a smile as you answer the phone, clicking it to speaker so you continue to work.

“hi baby girl!” your moms voice rings out through the speaker. “did you figure out what time you're leaving?”

“looks like tomorrow at 10 am, then we should be to yours by dinner.” you hum, glancing at the clock while continuing to pack up. “oh, change of plans by the way. rafe is coming with me.”

“oh yay!” your mom squeals. she only met rafe once when she came to visit you in the outer banks at your new house, but it was so early on in your relationship that she didn't really get to know him well, and things are a lot more serious now. “i can't wait to have my babies home for christmas.”

“does that mean andrew will be able to make it?” you ask, inquiring about your brother.

“they'll be here, but leaving the day after christmas for his wife's family.”

“okay, that sounds good. itll be nice to have the four of us back together, plus rafe and diana.” you hum. ever since your brother went away for college when he turned 18, and you left two short years after to move to the outer banks, it was hard to get the whole family together, even for the holidays. you spent the last two christmases in the outer banks, one spent alone in your new house, the other with the camerons.

you were shocked by how different their christmas was than what you were used to. it was cold and devoid of any traditions besides what was seemingly forced on the kids of the family. you ultimately had a good time with rafe, but you missed the familiarity and fun that you had with your family.

rafe was originally going to stay in the outer banks, not wanting to intrude on your family, but you finally convinced him last night that everyone would be happy to have him.

“okay so tell me about what i can get for rafe.” your mom says, and you just know she's bent over the counter with a notepad and pen in hand, not wanting rafe to be left out of opening presents.

“ready to go rafey?” you ask, looking at the back of the car, trunk filled with your suitcases, while the back seat has already wrapped presents, both for your family and ones for rafe, as well as his for you.

“i am. last chance to say if you forgot something.”

“nope.” you shake your head, “ive gone over my checklist three different times.”

“alright, off to your parents then.” rafe says, leaning over and pressing a kiss to your lips before taking off down the road.

“can we stop? i gotta pee.” you say, looking at the sign for an upcoming rest stop.

“again?” rafe sighs, but there's a small smile gracing his features as he turns the indicator on, pulling off to the road stop.

you hop out of the car, but rafe follows right behind you, not letting you go in by yourself, always extra cautious when you're out in public, especially away from the outer banks.

“gonna get us snacks.” rafe says, keeping his eye on you as you head into the bathroom, only turning to the vending machines when you disappear behind the tile wall.

“hey baby.” rafe says softly, stroking over your thigh to wake you up. “we're almost there.”

you stretch with a yawn, rubbing at your tired eyes. you blink them open, realizing the roads are now familiar, about to pull off the highway at your home town exit.

“thanks for driving, rafey.” you say, leaning over the center console to give him a kiss on the cheek. you clean up the car a bit while he finishes the drive, gathering up the wrappers of the chips and snacks and shoving them into a bag to throw away later.

“im so excited.” you say as rafe turns down your road, and your parents house comes into view.

“i can’t wait to get to know them.” rafe says, pulling into the driveway. you can’t help the squeal you let out in excitement as you rush out as soon as the car is in park, briefly turning your head to make sure rafe is following you as you step onto the porch, not bothering to know before flinging open the door, knowing that your parents are no doubt waiting right inside for you.

“mom! dad!” you shout, jumping into their arms as they swallow you into a comforting hug. you press a kiss to both of their cheeks before turning to rafe.

“i brought these for you.” rafe sticks forward his hand, in it a bouquet of flowers, presenting them to your mother.

“oh, rafe, darling you shouldn’t have.” your mom coos, pulling rafe into a hug before rushing into the kitchen to place the flowers into a vase. rafe gives your dad a firm handshake before offering to help carry in your bags.

you smile and look out the door as they chat casually, happy that rafe seems to be fitting in instantly.

“its just so different.” rafe says softly, stroking his hand absentmindedly over your back as you’re curled up next to him on the couch.

“what do you mean?” you hum, pressing your lips against his shoulder, even though you can guess what he’s talking about.

“your family is just so… easy going. and you all get along so well.” rafe says, looking around the living room at your parents sharing a couch, and your brother and his wife sitting in matching armchairs, all chatting happily amongst themselves.

“im lucky to have such an amazing family.” you say, looking to rafe. “and that you’re a part of it.” “i dont want to intrude though, baby. so if you have any traditions you want to be just amongst your-” “shh.” you cut rafe off, a smile on your face. “we all want you here. my mom was so excited when i told her you were coming. you love me right?” you ask, which rafe of course nods. “and we are planning to be together forever right? so of course my family is going to want you around, to include you in our traditions.” “sorry, dears, i couldn't help but overhear.” your mom says with a slightly blush to her cheeks. “forgive me for eavesdropping, but i actually have a gift for you rafe.”

rafe begins to say that he doesn’t need any gifts, but your mom cuts him off with a quick stern look, one he’s seen in you many times.

your mom returns to the room with a small wrapped box in her hands.

“thank you.” rafe says sincerely, setting the box on his lap. you smile, already knowing what is inside, seeing it before when andrew first brought diana to christmas celebrations.

rafe opens the box carefully, attempting not to rip the paper and make a mess, aware of the eyes on him.

“a christmas stocking.” rafe says with a smile as he pulls it out. you wait for him to notice, and you can tell from his body language the second his eyes read over his own name, hand stitched by your mother, signifying rafes place in the family. he tenses for a second before melting completely, body slumping against yours.

you wrap your arms around rafe, knowing this is an emotional moment for him, his moment where he realizes how loved and accepted he is.

“we are so happy you’re a part of our family, rafe.” your mom says, accepting his hug when he stands to embrace her and thank her for the gift, looking to the mantelpiece with all of the family stockings hanging, where his will soon join.

your dad strikes up a conversation with andrew, and you know its to take some of the pressure and attention off rafe as he ducks his head into your neck, pressing soft kisses to the skin there.

“i told you you wouldn’t be intruding.” you whisper, running your fingers through his hair.

“yeah, yeah.” rafe says sarcastically. “you’re right.” you give him a look, before he concedes with a nod. “as always.”

Jamie Tartt Accent Analysis

Um so yeah, after an anon ask to @withbadhair talking about how Phil is posh and Jamie is Manc, I relistened to Phil Dunster's episode on No Such Thing As A Fish again today and got sucked back into how much I love thinking about the intricacies of regional accents and how much I love thinking about Phil's accent work and how it is great!

So here you go -

A Yorkshire Lass' with an obsession with regional UK accents' take on Jamie Tartt's accent

Phil's Intentions with the accent

Phil has said that it was really his choice what sort of Manchester accent they went for (as Jamie wasn't written specifically to be Mancunian) but he was aiming for New Moston sort of area which is north eastern Manchester suburb (see yellow highlighted area on the image)

But he started by mimicking his agent who is apparently sassy and from Manchester but then listened to people like Aitch (who is from Moston which is probably where the idea for Jamie being from Moston/New Moston came from), Marcus Rashford (who is from Wythenshawe which is south Manchester out of the Outer Ring Road), Jesse Lingard (who is from Warrington which is a town between Manchester and Liverpool to the west) the Gallaghers (who are from Burnage which is south eastern - near Highfield Country Park on the map) which was more season 1 Jamie.

It was mentioned that Aitch was a bit inspiration with the attitude and the sort of swagger as well as the accent itself.

Features of a Mancunian Accent (some things to listen out for)

Research says that the Manchester accent can be characterised by a few distinct features:

The LettER vowel: if there is an ER at the end of a word it is pronounced more like UH. So for example "letter" becomes "let-uh"

The HappY vowel: what Jamie is known for. If there is a Y at the end of a word it is pronounced more like EH. For example "poopy" being "poopeh" or "city" being "cit-eh

H-dropping: this is typically northern but prevalent in Manchester. It is not pronouncing the H at the start of a word so instead of saying "head" pronouncing it "ed".

T-glotallisation: if there is a T in the middle of a word it is sort of dragged over. Like in "better" it can be "beh-uh".

-NG: typically if a word ends in -NG you do not say the G. For example "waiting" is "waitin"

All of these features are more easily noticed in words where more than one of them happens like "happy" becomes "appeh" with both H-dropping and the Y at the end

Analysis of Jamie Tartt's accent from a professional (not me)

Manchester Met have done a study of the different dialects within Greater Manchester and have split it into four categories. Lancashire, Mancs, Wigan, Posh. If Phil was aiming for Moston that would be more Manc but some Lancashire.

Dr Rob Drummond who was the lead on this research was sent clips of Jamie Tartt (edit - as a few people commented on this but he is a friend of No Such Thing As A Fish so was sent it in preparation for Phil being on the podcast but was apparently very complimentary so definitely a Phil Dunster win!) and managed to locate very precisely to just north of central Manchester in the Smedley sort of area which is the blue area on the map. If you compare that with Phil's aim of the red area ... that's damn impressive

So if you are looking for areas of Manchester to set your fics around or ways to make your dialogue feel more Tartt. Then we are looking for the Mancs accent and living somewhere in just north/north west of central Manchester based on his accent.

So yeah thanks for reading my thesis. I was going to go into words and sayings here too but it's after midnight and I have been talking to myself for the last hour just repeating the same words in Queens English, Leeds, and Manc 😂

Disclaimer - this is more based on S3 Jamie as S1 Jamie had a lot more subdued characteristics as Phil was finding his feet with the accent.

SUMMARY: Fragmentary source of healing and like an oasis away from the city, for his group of friends, Boo Seungkwan’s family farm is a regular vacation destination away from the city. Yet Seungkwan wishes for anything but a future filled with mountains of oranges, his dream of living in the city still ineffaceable in his head. When he receives a request from a friend he fell out of touch with asking if they could stay on his farm for the Summer, Seungkwan finally finds himself in an opportunistic place in which his dream can finally become a reality. Why? Because you’re cursed to have everything you love disappear.

Sweltering heat and an eventful Summer, magic touches lives in ways that we can never imagine. But in this transition between seasons, we find ourselves asking: When loss is as transient as the lives we live, what does it mean to love with every fiber of our being?

It starts with the peel. Hold the orange in both hands and press your thumbs against the hollow bottom where there’s an open dip between the peel and the fleshy meat of the orange. Press into the peel with the tips of your fingernails, hard, penetrating the peel and creating a perfect opening to peel the fruit. Then, start peeling the bright and smooth outer shell away until you’re left with that orange and fleshy ball of juice. When you halve the fruit between your fingers, it sizzles and cracks crisply as you rip it apart — sometimes the juice escapes the membrane in a transparent drop of liquid, collecting on your finger, and rolling down your hand toward your arm. Sweet or sour, the rest comes after.

The large rolling suitcase leaves behind two long indents in the dry dirt path as it drags along the road. Each pull and tug towards a new temporary familiar coats the once black and glossy wheels in a matte tan color disrupted by speckled imprints of tiny gravel in every new layer of dirt rolled onto the wheels. Once in a while, the wheels break through a pair of footprints that belong to the person pulling the suitcase like the long lines used to omit phrases from a written sentence. Still, the traces along the dirt path are never straight, nor are they as continuous as one would like them to be. As an arborist would study the rings of a tree to determine periods of sickness and health, anybody could see how the lines left by the suitcase indicate periods of pause in transit, a person struggling along the road, and moments of pure and undisrupted conversation.

Under the warm morning sunlight, Boo Seungkwan has a new kind of warmth lingering by his side — someone so familiar yet so new, neither déjà vu nor jamais vu but nostalgia in person. He hasn’t seen you in years, yet he can’t find himself to say he expected the person to step out of the taxi to be someone drastically different. But you’ve changed since he last saw you, albeit it’s a more mature version of you who walks alongside him toward his family farm.

Seungkwan knows everything about you, for instance, as long as he asked you about family, close friends, past relationships, the summary of the last chapter you read: you would always answer, bluntly of course. In the past, he would often find himself wondering about whether or not you never made the effort to ask him any questions about himself because you were simply not interested or if you were afraid of your inevitable. He knows the amount of hair that collects on your drain every time you shampoo your hair. He knows you never order the same drink from a coffee shop twice. He knows the answer to every single question he has ever asked you to the point where he’s afraid that one day he would run out of questions to ask you. So when he received a message from you asking if you could work at his farm for the Summer in exchange for room and board, he knew both your lives are about to undergo a new form of change and momentum. Change or no change, he agreed to your request if and only if you would be willing to fulfill his additional term: you must help him get rid of his oranges.

What presents itself as the Summer getaway is a 3-acre piece of land that hosts a small orange grove behind the cream-colored family farmhouse and guest house-turned-seasonal café that Seungkwan is left in charge of for the Summer while his family vacations in the Maldives. Even sitting in the car with the windows down and turning onto the street in which the property sits wafts of honeyed and tangy citrus can energize those on a long journey away from the city. Beside the dirt road that leads towards the farmhouse are large patches of clover in place of grass and the beautiful array of flowers and bushes that are planted between dirt and clover. What is most magnificent, Seungkwan points out while walking up to the farmhouse where you would be staying for the rest of the Summer, is not the fact that his grandparents built this place from the ground up or the thousands of oranges they produce each year, but the fact that he drew the long end of the stick for you so you have the first floor study to yourself instead of having to share a room with the rest of his friends.

When his introductory gist is returned with silence, Seungkwan finds himself too embarrassed to see whether or not you’ve reacted in response. But if he took the time to look, he would’ve seen you looking around your surroundings in awe, wondering about how much of the landscape could change just by being thirty minutes away from the city.

“Let’s see,” Seungkwan mumbles while opens the front door and leads you to the interior of the house in an attempt to free himself from his embarrassment. “The study is the first door on the left down the left hallway. It’s a sofa bed, and I already set it up for you. Laundry room is one door down. I’m in my grandparents’ bedroom down the right hallway. There’s also a bathroom and a guest room on our side. Everybody else should be upstairs…if you think it’s awkward to have pictures of my family stare at you while you sleep, I won’t be offended if you turn them around.” He scratches his hair, still trying to figure out whether or not he conjured an air of awkwardness between the two of you.

He hovers behind you as you quietly make your way to your room, looking at you crane your head to look around the foreign farmhouse interior from the living room to the wooden beams that support the ceiling. It’s quiet between the two of you, as if you’ve both run out of topics to discuss after the brief moment the two of you trekked from taxi to house. He doesn’t know why he hesitates when you reach for the doorknob as if he were imagining you to be some interior design critic for a magazine. But his breath hitches for a second when you open the door and step into the modest office. Distracting himself from nothing, he looks at anything but you and settles for the tiny streaks of dirt your suitcase wheels brought indoors. And he wipes away the dirt with his foot, making a mental note to mop when he has time.

“Seungkwan?” Your voice calls for his attention not too long after you entered the office.

Seungkwan steps into the open doorframe, careful to not cross the threshold of the room in order to give you some privacy. He notices you’re sitting on the edge of the sofa bed, your suitcase temporarily tucked against the wall and underneath the light switch. There are pictures of his family on the shelves, most of them with him in large puffer jackets holding large oranges in his tiny hands. What is more is that he notices your hand which clutched the blanket in which you are sitting on loosen with his presence and leave a mountainous crease in its absence.

“Thank you,” you tell him.

The response sounds like a squeak which Seungkwan finds both amusing and reassuring. The fact is there is an air of awkwardness present, not from his creation but from the years the two of you spent apart, that causes you to squeak. Gratitude phrased simply, yet your simplicity is more than enough to let him know you’re feeling the same way he feels.

Truthfully, Seungkwan is still trying to fathom and process the fact that you are here with him. It hits him in this moment that maybe the you who sits in comfortable silence while staring out the window isn’t exactly the same you he once knew like the back of his hand. Finally taking time to look at his friend closely, Seungkwan still recognizes you in the same way that we recognize ourselves as ourselves even when all of our cells have exchanged themselves for new cells. He recognizes the way your hands clutch into balls with your thumbs placed between your pointer and middle finger when you fidget. He recognizes the backpack you brought as the same one you used in college. But he fails to recognize and understand why or how you have become the person to reach out to him for any reason. Why is it that he was chosen to be one of your protagonists in your journey in finding the meaning to your life? How is it that a nobody who dreams of a life unattached to the farm could possibly offer something of such value to someone who constantly lives life in fear of loss?

Truth is, there is always something about being next to you that always makes Boo Seungkwan want to cry. Pity doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling that wells and burns in his chest. Is it rage? Sadness? Regret? Empathetic and sympathetic as he is, he is prone to wearing his emotions before he can even realize what he is feeling. Being next to you causes his chest to concave and collapse in on itself, but he knows better than to feel bad for you. Or maybe he thinks it’s so fucked that you’re in a position in which you’re so desensitized to loss that you can’t even recognize in any moment that you lost what you loved. Always by your side, or at least until a few years ago, Seungkwan was there to reintroduce you to the things and concepts you’ve once loved because he cared and notices. Now, a savior isn’t who he’s trying to be nor was that role ever his intention. Maybe a constant without caution is what he strives to be in your life even if his own selfishness causes him to believe that in case you ever allow yourself to fall in love with him he would be able to disappear and thus never take on the responsibilities of a third-generation farm owner.

Yet a curse regarding loss upon a regular human being in love shouldn’t be the wake-up call that shows the world that loss is a daily occurrence. Loss is as banal and unremarkable as its spelling. And Seungkwan knows this. He’s lost torn snack foil wrapper corners from his pockets. He’s lost time during transit. He’s lost those who he once loved dearly. So why is someone else’s loss so much more important to him when he knows that love is involved?

And why is it that he chooses to show everybody unconditional love and care even when he knows transactional relationships would statistically yield more return?

Seungkwan isn’t a bad person. There isn’t a single bad bone in his body. He’s known you long enough to not tiptoe around you because, despite your curse, you’re just a regular person. And you would prefer it if other people treated you as a regular person. But why is it that he feels the way he feels whenever he’s alone with you?

Orange peel sliced away to form a hexagonal-shaped fruit, lean the fruit on its long side against the cutting board to slice thin hexagons. If what you hold in your hand is too dull, then you risk losing more than what there is to the recipe. Dullness slices the fruit just as sharpness does, but you risk bruising the delicate meat and creating soft pockets of mush while the juice escapes and drips onto the cutting board. There are times when it’s better to do things quickly and all at once or you will risk losing the beauty in your creation. Simple orange slices in a refreshing salad, sometimes it’s better to not try too hard. You did your best. And that’s enough for me.

Dropping the ATV off near the entrance to the orchard, Seungkwan jingles and twirls the keys in his left hand while directing to his seasonal workers where the crates should be stored for the night shipment to local grocers. Without noticing how hard he twirls the keys around his pointer finger, the small chain of keys flies off his finger and onto the ground a few feet ahead of him. It lands on a soft patch of dirt, light colored dust covering surfaces that gleamed with a metallic sheen just a few seconds ago. Someone picks up the pair of keys before Seungkwan has the change to chance to react and lightly tosses the keys back to its owner.

Yoon Jeonghan, with his jet-black hair he spent months growing out that finally touches his shoulders, takes long strides towards his friend while reaching into his pant pocket for his phone, a long stream of complaints already trailing out of his mouth.

“I looked everywhere for you,” Jeonghan complains to Seungkwan while Seungkwan finds himself rolling his eyes. “Why didn’t you pick up your phone? We’ve been calling and texting you, but you wouldn’t reply.”

“I left it somewhere. Can’t remember where I put it,” Seungkwan sighs while wiping the dust off his keys with the hem of his shirt. “When did you arrive?”

“Like half an hour ago.” Jeonghan adjusts his light blue baseball cap to better shield his eyes from the Sun. He clicks open his lock-screen to double-check the text he received from his driver. “Seokmin’s napping in our room. He’ll come out later.”

“Oh no, was the drive bad? When did you guys leave?”

“Nah, the drive wasn’t bad. He’s just hungover,” he replies nonchalantly while shoving his phone back into his pocket. The dark-haired man quickly looks around the familiar farm and rocks on the heels of his feet. “Busy, huh?” He observes.

“Yeah,” Seungkwan agrees. There is a glimmer of mischievousness in his eyes when he cocks his head toward the ATV he parked not so long ago. “But the new investments help.”

“Bro I can’t imagine how cool your grandparents must look while riding the ATVs.”

“5 miles an hour.” Seungkwan gestures the number five with his hand and drops it after. “Speed demons.”

It’s clear to Seungkwan that Jeonghan, who had spent a remarkable amount of time on this farm over the past few years, isn’t looking around to people-watch or check out the new additions to the farm. He’s been around long enough that Seungkwan’s grandparents consider him as one of their grandsons. No, Seungkwan knows that while Jeonghan is trying to play it off as if he’s simply checking out and reminisce in his surroundings, what he is looking for is not an it, rather, a who.

When Yoon Jeonghan, who is usually not the type of person to be silent or stay still for long periods of time, freezes in his spot like a deer in the headlights, Seungkwan knows better than to follow his friend’s line of vision to see who exactly it was who caught his eye. Instead, Seungkwan looks toward the blue canopy near the entrance and notices that two people are missing from their posts.

Out of nowhere, Seungkwan feels someone from behind him throw their entire weight onto his shoulders. The force of the sudden weight on top of Seungkwan knocks Seungkwan’s sunhat from his head forward and onto the ground and causes him to lose his balance, but he grabs onto the unwavering Jeonghan’s shoulder to steady himself.

“Seungkwan,” Yunling sings in a sing-song voice. Her bleached blonde hair falls and covers half of Seungkwan’s face as she reaches her arm over his shoulder to wave a familiar object in front of him. “You forgot your phone.”

“Get off me. It’s hot,” Seungkwan groans while bending his knees so she can safely hop off his back. She hands him his phone to which he thanks her for. In the meantime, another person picks the sunhat from the floor and tucks a thick booklet underneath their aim pit to brush the dust off the hat before handing it back to its owner. And Seungkwan finds himself, yet again, thanking another person for handing him an item he dropped.

Seungkwan sees you bring the accounting booklet to the front of your chest while Yunling leans her elbow on your shoulder. It looks like you’re about to say something to him, but someone interrupts your question.

“Yn.” Jeonghan manages to push through his state of shock, yet your name rolls off the tip of his tongue as if he spent his entire life dedicated to saying the name.

It feels familiar because it was.

Gladly handing his daughter over to his friend, Choi Seungcheol mumbles a quiet note of gratitude before he sits up straight and rolls his shoulder backwards to stretch his back. He leans forward in his seat and comfortably rests his elbows on his knees before grabbing the untouched fork next to his salmon salad. And Seungkwan watches him dig his fork into the roasted salmon and take a hearty bite to enjoy the marinated citrus flavor of the salmon by itself before raking the metal prongs through the meat to shred it to pieces just as Seungkwan’s grandparents had taught Seungcheol to do so before they went on vacation.

June is when Seungkwan’s friends all arrived at the farm for a Summer away from the city; January is when Seungcheol arrived at the farm, two people’s lives packed up in a couple of suitcases and cardboard boxes for time away from the city to heal and escape. The café, originally a guesthouse, returned to serve its original purpose by housing Seungcheol and his daughter for a little over half a year, and Seungkwan knows very well that he doesn’t have the heart to tell his friend that he should’ve moved out months ago. So he sits in the once sought-after spot in the café with a sleeping baby in his arms, watching the newly single father scarf down his salad like it’s his last meal. Looking at the infant, her dark-colored eyebrows and the pout that resembles her father’s all too well, stress stores itself in the pit of his stomach, finding company with the sympathetic grief he shared with the heartbroken Seungcheol who once couldn’t so much bring himself to pick up the pen to sign his divorce papers.

Falling in love is easy, but falling out of love and learning how to become whole again is a process that can shatter one’s soul and make one doubt whether or not love in any shape and form is an achievable future feat. A lifetime is not long enough to contain and overcome love’s defeat for some. And for those devastated by love, the process of falling in love would never be the same as it once was.

he takes every possible opportunity to spend time with you; it’s not that he’s overwhelming you or pressuring you, no, it’s just that he wants to be surrounded by you whenever you can because your presence is so delightful and special to him. he has already canceled the boys’ night several times just to be with you - which made the boy get angry - he also quickly texts you when he feels bored or has some free time; and when you finally meet, he enjoys every second with you and no matter how much time you spend together, it’s never enough for him, he always wants more and more, he always wants you.

he shows you in every way possible - honestly, most of the time he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. he always looks at you with bright and passionate eyes which makes anyone can notice his strong and warm feelings for you; he also likes to address “my” before referring to you, so whenever he introduces you to someone or whenever you are in public, he usually calls you “my love”, “my darling” with a voice full of love but with a certain possessive tone that makes you shiver.

he walks pretty fast and doesn’t care if his friends get left behind because they can’t keep up with him or because they have to stop to fix their shoelaces or something, but with you it’s different. he doesn’t do his own step as usual, he imitates your step so you can walk side by side. he usually walks on the outer side of the sidewalk to keep you safe from the road; he is also quick to notice if your shoe is untied or not, and when it is, he stops in front of you and ties it for you, without saying anything. he also usually walks a little further to open the door for you to come in and always puts his hand on your back to guide you or gently takes your hand, stroking the back with his thumb.

he has a habit of always offering you first what he is about to eat or drink; he leans towards you when he buys an onigiri or picks up the straw and directs it to your lips, indicating you to take the first sip. he also doesn’t mind sharing his food with you; he usually makes two puddings or two onigiris for you two, but if you eat yours and still want some of his, he’ll give you no problem and make a mental note to cook more for you.

the privilege you get from dating him is honestly that he is able to pour his heart and soul into you without feeling afraid or hiding anything. whenever he feels the need to cry or needs some kind of emotional release or comfort, you are the first person he calls; if he’s upset or stressed, all he wants to do is lay his head in your lap, giving your thighs a big hug while you play with his hair, your voice is the only thing he wants to hear and feel. when he gets good news, you’re always the first to know because he loves sharing life with you and all the happiness in it.

he loves to pamper you, so anything you ask or just mention, he will quickly do it or buy it for you; if you have liked some necklace or ring, you’ll find it in a beautiful wrapper on your bed the next day. if you just mention that you wanted to eat something, know that the same night he’ll buy it - or try to cook it for you. he also stops whatever he is doing just to give you attention and all the love you want; he always puts you and your wishes and choices as a priority and he is always more than ready to make you happy.

you’re the only person he lets be player number one; he also lets you lead the game (if it’s something like minecraft or some other free world game). and he also always gives you the best things in the game, no matter if you’re better than him or not. he also lets you win sometimes because he loves your smile and seeing you happy is the joy of his heart, so he can stand your teasing.

he always puts you as his highest priority; since you started dating, he couldn’t see a future without you anymore, and that’s when he included you in all his dreams and plans and also promised to make all your dreams and desires come true and, since then, he does his best and the impossible for you. regardless if it’s something small or big, he will always be by your side, sharing with you all feelings and emotions while holding your hand, demonstrating that you are not alone and never will be.

he is not the best at pda for several reasons, he still goes out of his way to show he cares, especially around people because he doesn’t want you to feel ignored or left out; he likes to link your pinkies together as you walk side by side, or put his hand on your thigh and gently stroke it with his thumb, and even put your head gently on his shoulder when he notices you are tired. and every day he gets better at showing that he cares and that he’s there, which makes you fall in love with him all over again.

he spends nights and nights turning pro at the things you like. if you like to cook, he will now know all your favorite recipes by heart. do you like a specific sport? he watched some matches and learned all the rules. no matter what you like, he will dedicate himself to learning it just to understand you a little better and because he loves your smile when he starts talking about something you like.

There's a time and a place for everything, including doing savage burnouts. The time: any time. The place: the police station. You'd be surprised just how vacant the police station is during the day. Most of those cops are out investigating and/or committing crimes, and they won't want to drive all the way back just to yell at you for letting your clutch out a little fast. Sure, they're more likely to catch you during shift change, but at that point they just want to go home.

Since time immemorial, the cops have been busting our little street racing spots. We'd gather at a Timmies on the periphery of the ring road, what the nerds are calling the Outer Rim, talk some shit, and before the second flag had dropped on a heads-up drag race for pinks, the police helicopter would be there. You know where the police helicopter never is? At the police station, because that would just be bad optics, a wasteful expenditure of fuel, air space, and costly helicopter therapy. What are you looking for up there, officer, trying to see if your door got dinged in the parking lot?

Putting these two things together, a group of local entrepreneurs started a drag-racing series at the police station. There's plenty of parking: most of their day is spent listening to suburbanites shriek about a cracked headlight on their Tucson, and they just put in a special spot for you to be able to do Craigslist deals. Sure, it's probably suspicious to them that there are so many modified shit-box Hondas sitting in the parking lot, revving their engines, but these are traffic cops we're talking about, not hardened detectives looking for the Prelude Killer. We've been doing a few hours of races a night, with nary a scolding word.

So why not join us out here? Unless you're a cop, in which case you probably have better places to be. May I suggest the Timmies out there on the Outer Rim? They've got some new crullers, which are so delicious they've got to be committing some kind of crime.

“Escape”

Paring: Hunter x GN padawan Reader (ITS PLATONIC!)

Warning: sensory overload, feeling trapped. Hurt/comfort but it’s Nothing too big

Word count: 1091

Notes: I said it once and I’ll say it again- I LOVE DAD HUNTER (and yes my pfp is new! I learned how to render slightly!)

Tech made sure that Hunters helmet blocked out as much background noise as it could.

The ringing in his ears and the weakness Hunter felt in his legs were not helping now.

As he walked through the busy streets the ache in his head seem to have no end. He didn't dare take his helmet off now- today was so much worse, the bustle of the space port that they were currently at was ungodly loud. The colors and lights that refracted off of all the different surface were blinding.

Hunter offered to go off to find some fuel instead of Crosshair. Knowing that his brother wouldn't have said anything otherwise but the constant rubbing of his eyes told him everything.

It was quite odd to see a clone trooper all the way on this outer rim planet, especially when they were supposed to be undercover, but it didn’t matter if Hunter was unable to lead- something he had to do and had to do well.

A twelik man sat on the side of the road trying to fix what looked like a radio. Coun hands fiddled with the back and another turned the dial ever so slowly.

He turned it once again and a terrible static sound blasted from the radio.

Many around held their ears as they tried to rush by, the noise continued as the twelik tried frantically to turn it off speaking his apologies rapidly to the people that passed by.

Hunter stumbled backward. The noise caught him off guard and he quickly needed to get out of there. Hunter wasn’t known to run, but this was a fight he knew he couldn’t win.

The static rattled around his scull. The noise seems to slip through the cracks of his helmet as he tried to grasp his head with his hands.

Paying no mind to anyone else on the street Hunter booked it. Every possible thing seemed to yell at him. The sweat relief of quite seemed a million miles away.

Against better judgement Hunter ripped off his helmet. Sweat started to bead at his brow and his hair stuck to the back of his neck. Head whipping all around looking for anything to help calm his senses.

He stumbled once again over his legs, the world seemed to spin and swirl.

An alley covered in shadows and safe from the heat seemed like the perfect place to escape. Even for a moment.

Hunter knew he couldn’t stay there forever, though he wish he could. He wished he could forget this loud and unruly war and just curl up forever in a cool alley like this one.

Away from everything.

“Hunter?” His head shot up quickly, a hand flew to his blaster and then to his helmet- wait where was his helmet?

His eyes cleared for a second taking in the sight in front of him through his daze.

“Hunter.” It was spoken more firmly this time. He watched as you knelt down. Slowly as if you were trying not to frighten a wild animal you held out his helmet. “Are you alright?”

You already knew the answer. Your sergeant sat in a alley missing some armor and in a panic clearly wasn’t good. You felt it.

When you arrived in the atmosphere of this planet you could already feel everything. Way too many people lived here- their heartbeats pounded your skull as you walked by, the anguish and fear some felt scared you. The different force signatures of those around were confusing and loud.

Everything was so loud.

“Kid what are you doing out here,” Hunter gasped for a moment coming back to his senses. “You were supposed to stay on the ship.”

His voice was gruff against your ears but you only drew closer to him. All the new things shouted at you but the one familiar thing called softly- almost signing a comforting song and that’s when you knew. Hunter needed someone.

“We should leave.” Your bluntness shocked Hunter for a second. He wasn’t sure how the force worked really, but your uneven breath gave him some signal that something was bothering you as well. “Crosshair doesn’t like it here, Wrecker is itching to do something and Tech’s mind is racing very loudly.”

Hunter started for a second before you added. “You don’t like it here either, I can get the fuel if you like. Go back to the ship.”

The man that sat in front of you wanted ever so badly to get off this rock as fast as possible, escape for only a moment in a place he was familiar with. A place he knew was safe.

“This was the worst planet to land on, I’m sorry kid.” Hunter sat up against the wall rubbing his face. The feeling of dread that he let his squad down with this decision plagued him.“Let’s get the fuel quickly and we can shut everyone up when we get on the marauder so somethings quiet.”

You giggled at his last remark holding out a hand to help him up. The glaze over his eyes were still present and his mind ran circle again and again, but he calmed a little knowing that they would be leaving soon. You did as well.

“Need to borrow the helmet kid?” Hunter asked as you made your way back to the busy street. “Pretty good at keeping stuff out, Tech modified it himself.”

You smiled again as you held tightly to Hunters free hand. “I don’t think you know how this really works.” You looked up at him. “But you should put it on yourself.”

“Oh.” He said quietly listening to your advice. He paused for a moment unsure of what to say. Of how to really comfort you. “Well to make it up the bunks are all your first.”

You nodded in agreement- the sounds of the world consumed you, but now you weren’t fighting this battle alone. Even if it was in your own head.

“If you can get Cross out of there first.” You joked nudging closer into Hunters side.

His presence stood out from the others. The feeling of safety radiated from his being, you could feel it when you were first introduced to the squad, when trouble surrounded you, when you were together on the marauder. You felt it now.

The alien feelings and sounds around you didn’t disappear but were quieted by the familiar feeling of safety. Of home.

Hunter was here for you now, and you would always be there for him.

Chapter 232 Trivia (Part 1)

This is it… The final chapter.

The Perseus and American planes get one final appearance, in color!

They must have landed a ways away from shore since Senku caught a fish, but the new Perseus isn't an aircraft carrier so how far did the plane fly?

I wonder if Charlotte is piloting it…

The choice of a land vs water return has historically depended on the geography of the country sending the rocket up: Russia has a lot of land, so the Soyuz capsules are made for land, and the US is surrounded by water so they've traditionally used that instead.

Since Treasure Island is an island, they opted for a water landing. Both types of landing have advantages and disadvantages, it just depends on which risks you'd rather take.

The Soyuz capsules Byakuya's team came down on are designed for both water and land, but because they don't have the same flotation devices that the Apollo ones have, they can't right themselves after landing. The capsules naturally float anyways.

In Senku's case, the top flotation devices weren't needed, but it's odd that the buoyancy ring was already inflated upon touchdown— wouldn't the impact make them burst, or flip the capsule upside down? It's also unusual that they'd exit before the recovery vehicle reached them.

Maybe they were worried about Ryusui-the-stowaway using up all the air inside so they decided to open it early?

We can't be sure of where they touched down since there's not enough landmass shown to identify anything, but given the celebration was held in Japan and the Perseus came to pick them up, it's a fair assumption that they landed in a similar area to the original Soyuz Six.

I'm sure most people have noticed how Kohaku has fallen asleep on the stage and Stanley is going through a nicotine withdrawal/acting as if it was a proper military medal ceremony, but I doubt most people noticed that Ryusui is actually meant to be 7 cm taller than Stanley…

Everyone's asking who this girl is, but I genuinely think she's just a random extra person, unless Boichi decided to recolor Kohaku with brown hair just to throw us off one last time. Another guess is that she's the girl with glasses from the 1st light novel, but without glasses.

It appears the villager criteria has expanded even further past simply allowing outsiders— outer space is now fair game! Their new friend is officially a member of Ishigami Village!

The bar in the middle of the E is also missing in E=mc², which I guess is a pretty E-Z mistake to make haha!

(Since it's now c=mc² does that mean we can simplify to m=1/c? 🤔 )

The area reminds me of the DARPA expo in the national park rather than Corn City, so it may be a new town based around where the Americans had originally revived. It has a defensive wall which is unusual, so it may be a military research base or to protect against wolf attacks.

I'm also a little disappointed they opted for cars and roads rather than trains, especially leaving the town, since America is very well suited for a rail network.

This plane is unlikely to be the piston-type propeller plane that we saw earlier, but rather a turboprop: a propeller in front of a jet engine, Xeno's specialty. These types of engines are better for short flights (<480 km) because they're more efficient over short distances.

Because of the slower travel, they can handle shorter runways better, but I'm not sure that's much of a problem when landing on the ocean.

Traditional jets are better for long distances like, say, the 8,500 km journey Gen took to get from America to Japan.

Did Francois and Gen leave Suika at the airport!?

Gen could be talking about the old outfit design, or, because the leather didn't fully deteriorate in the 7.5 year time skip (we can see this from some of the other outfits), it could literally be the same outfit from the Stone Wars, but patched up a little.

I assume this was because Francois is a more important character, but they could have gotten Carlos, the driver by trade, to bring Gen to the wedding.

Though he probably didn't want to leave miss Luna alone…

Hair grows ~6in/15cm per year, and the average women's head size is 8.6in/21cm, so assuming Yuzuriha didn't cut too much off, her hair grew around 10.9 in/27.7cm, therefore 2 years have passed.

This isn't perfect because Mirai's hair didn't grow as long, but it's an estimate!

These people are Yuzuriha's parents (despite the father's striking resemblance to Taiju), since Taiju's parents are long dead.

Another shooting stance comparison! Stanley is obviously cool and using only one hand, but Yo is using two hands. The number of hands doesn't affect accuracy, but cops are generally trained to use two hands since it's more stable when firing consecutive bullets.

A portrait of being 40-something queer adults with no kids, cut off from a good part of your family, aka observations from a recent thing in my life.

So Mr. Rings got a new job and it's all good things EXCEPT that it requires six weeks of training in a city almost 100 miles away, and they don't pay for lodging. (Which yeah is very Weird, but basically the location he was hired for is on the very outer edge of a Metro Area and so he was expected to still commute.)

And when it was brought up we thought he would have to travel less far and also he had a place with a friend nearby he could stay.

And then the location ended up being farther away, so nearly a two hour drive from our house, without traffic. And the place he had lined up to stay suddenly wasn't available because they had a family member get injured.

So two days before the training started, we needed a place for him to stay.

We ran through our options and on paper the best options were my aunt and my pseudo-adopted brother. My aunt's house was fairly close to the location, it's a sizeable nice house, they have a spare room. Ideal, right? (My pseudo-brother is just a small apartment, so less ideal.)

But I brought up this idea to my mom and she was like ehhhhh, I don't know. And I'm like why not? She's like well....I just don' t think it'd be good.

So anyway, I did reach out to my aunt and the response I got was...tepid. Like yeah okay he can stay but are you really sure that's what you want and blah blah downsides. Like clearly reluctant.

MEANWHILE and I'm getting to the point here...some friends of ours that moved away from us and we haven't seen in a few years were like hey, we have plenty of room, you're so welcome. And they lived way far away from his training location. Like you're gonna have to pay for toll roads every day and it'll be a solid hour commute.

But he decided to stay with our friends because it would be so much less awkward, less of an imposition. We know their offer of help is genuine, unlike our family. Which is just WEIRD, right?

Why is it so much MORE comfortable to ask friends for help than family?

And spoiler, I took a six week break writing this and it's now the end of his training. And he can only gush about how awesome it was to stay with our friends and how great they were about everything. We bought them a very expensive bottle of liquor as a thank you gift. So yeah, it was very much the right choice.

Over and over in my adult life, my friends have been there for us when family hasn't. And I don't have any big traumatic thing in my family (his is different we are no contact with them). We're just not that close, except for with my mom who is a quarter of the globe away.

So value your friends. Support them when they need it. Keep in touch because you really never know who's gonna come through for you.

When a Good Deed Causes a Series of Unfortunate Events - Chapter 2 - The Object

Chapter 1

The echoes of a metal door slamming reverberate through the alley. For a moment, the air becomes thick with the stench of rotting garbage. You instinctively wince and mutter incoherent complaints about your life. You open your eyes to the discolored brick wall that reflects the dim light of a single flickering streetlamp overhead. It’s nighttime.

Realizing what transpired, you quickly got up on your knees and gave yourself a pat down.

Condition? Uninjured.

Satchel? Still there.

Items? Not Stolen.

Pants? Still on.

With a sigh, you dust off the dirt on you, aware that a shower would be necessary after this whole ordeal. Just as you were about head back, your eyes gravitate towards the grimy pavement you were unconscious on. You are puzzled by what you are seeing – a small, dull object, no larger than half your thumb. You cautiously pick it up to inspect it closer. It seems to be a fragment of something, with its outer edge colored silver and the rest golden-brown. You can’t discern what is had once been.

“HEY!” A shout jolts you out of your stupor. You snap your head towards the commotion. Near the end, where the alley meets the main road, stands a man wearing ragged clothes. He swishes a broken beer bottle in the face of someone familiar – a resident who lives a floor below you. Screeching to the top of his lungs, the resident runs away.

Ah, that’s why I haven’t gotten robbed.

The drunk begins walking towards you, albeit clumsily. Without hesitation, you sprint towards your apartment and slam the door shut.

Slowly, you make your way towards your living room area, carefully placing the fragment on the coffee table before sinking into your couch. Your fingers interlock, creating the perfect bridge to rest your head upon. You are fixated on this enigmatic object. A terrible, sinking feeling crept over you – you know this item will bring complications into your life.

Abandoning it is an option, of course, but the mere thought scares you. You have a feeling that if you got rid of it, it would either find its way back to you or fall into the wrong hands. You just know it.

With a trembling hand, you pick up the fragment to examine it once again. Now, it appears ordinary, lacking the allure it once possessed. Why was it so difficult to part with this object? Just what is with this object?

Ring. Ring.

You unzip your satchel and pull out your phone.

Incoming Call: Creedence Clearwater

Creedence Clearwater is the owner of the SPW Bar. You’ve only known him for a few months, but you’ve come to appreciate him as a boss far more than any of your previous employers. Unlike previous bosses, he is always ready to lend a hand when you ask for help. He makes a point of addressing his workers’ concerns promptly and efficiently. Creedence can be found at the bar every day, from the moment it opens until it closes, tirelessly ensuring that everything runs smoothly.

You’ve built a good rapport with him in the short time you’ve known him, and he has earned your respect with his dedication. Whether it’s jumping in behind the bar during busy shifts or resolving conflicts among staff members, Creedence is always there, leading by example and fostering a supportive work environment.

However, these past nine days have been different. He’s been in Florida, trying to help his daughter resolve a wrongful accusation of murder. In his absence, you’ve found yourself taking over almost all his responsibilities, resulting in more hours. Creedence assured you that he’ll compensate you more, as he felt guilty leaving on such short notice. While the extra money is nice, you long for his return.

“Good evening, Creed. How’s everything?” you answer.

“Oh, it’s going. Can’t believe I paid $150 per hour for a consultation with a lawyer,” Creedence responds, frustration evident in his voice. “By the way, you know the new guy, Joshu? Yeah. Well, he walked out. I was wondering if you could close the bar with Gwess. Time-and-a-half.”

“Say no more.”

You bid each other farewell, leaving the object on the table before getting ready for work.

Double life kids, eight years later

The final designs for the kids. Wont make anymore, unless I finally get on with making that Superhero au I said I would do a few months ago

Anyways

I’ve been working really hard on these designs, and some of them are probably the best I’ve ever made! So I really hope you like them!

Liana

(A few years down the road, the watcher genes started to become more prominent. The extra pairs of wings and the eye change are just the beginning too! Her color palette is kinda a mess but it’s just how she rolls. Top hat with goggles and a corset because Steampunk vibes are cool. Also her Flyguy bow, just in case)

Parrot pal has successfully started her own business, where she sells everything from deep slate to gold to clothing and mercenary jobs. The wider the spread, the better the bread

Lives very close to the shopping district, to keep an eye on her shops

The Watcher thing sure is…interesting. Grian hasn’t told her the full story, so she isn’t sure exactly what she is but she knows that it’s something unworldy

Is still learning to disguise it

Has a fierce rivalry with Mumbo over trying to become the riches hermit. Mumbo had no idea this rivalry is happening

She’s bestie with her little brother, Grumbot Prime

Wes

(Golden boy. His Hc and current design has a lot of similarities, mainly because when it comes to change he likes to take things slow. Got a haircut tho, plus many tattoos and a circlet to represent his status as the son of the sun god (Tho who knows how true that actually is). Also has a skull ring, in honor of Jekiv)

Baby boy is doing fine. Mostly

Is decked out in gold because again, he loves to mine, and gold is his favorite ore

Lost part of his ear and hearing in a creeper explosion, least favorite of his scars

Has improved his self confidence greatly over the years, which in turn improved his relationship with his dad

(Side note, I can imagine Xisuma whitelisting like a therapist or something just because these three, especially Wes, has some things to work through)

Is actually an extremely skilled farm creator, just like his other dad

Spends a lot of time trying to find a way to fix their code so they can leave and rejoin servers

Gertrude

(Total princess warrior vibes for her. Wanted her to be a mixture of Butch and femme, in the weirdest way possible. She’s now also wearing shoes! I wanted her to have heels alright? Her soles eventually got worn out so she’s wearing a pair of boots)

One of the best warriors on Empires SMP

Used to have separate outfits for being a monster hunter and being a noble, but eventually just combined the two to make her life easier

(Eddie made her armor, she’s very grateful)

The armor had to be made fireproof, because despite being older she still scuffles playfully with Johnny

She went through quite a large number of weapons before settling on the mace. It just, “fit her”

Also very few people can actually lift her mace, because it’s extremely heavy.

Sometimes helps out fWhip in Gobland with redstone, just because it’s fun. She enjoys the challenges that he presents to her

Wants to someday face ten withers and take down them all. Until then, she will train with all her might

Johnny

(My friend told me he looked evil lol. Ran out of cowboy outfits a long time ago, so here’s a more outlaw vibey one. The goggles and scarf are to protect his face from sand though, so likes there’s a reason lol. Butternut stands proud at the scene as well)

Despite his outer appearance, he’s still the nice lad you all know and love

He is more of a free roamer nowadays though, mostly traveling the mesa around Tumble Town, sometimes even beyond it

After Liana left for Empires, Johnny started helping Pix out with his excavations

When there’s word of a new discovery far away from any of the empires, you can bet your ass that Johnny is he first man on the case

And sure, he caaaaaaaaaaan use his elytra and get there in maybe half a day, but that beats the point of traveling!

An absolute expert at dealing with mobs at this point, especially creepers. Goes fucking crazy with that whip of his

Despite it all, he’s still a simple country bumpkin at heart, who likes his breakfast early and his music country

Jassy

(Queen is extremely anime. I just searched “anime ninja female” and tried to get general style of outfit correct. Her hair was almost impossible, but looking on it now it looks fantastic. Her daggers are also enchanted, that’s why they’re purple lol)

Jassy is a trophy wife and she takes her job very seriously

She does know her way around redstone, and she ain’t a bad builder (She’s the one who made her and Liana’s base), but her wife is out making bank while she takes care of their many, many cats

The mercenary part of Double Co. is her entirely though.

The story behind her damaged eye is a mystery to all, as every time someone asks about it she makes up some new fantastical tale

In reality she was flipping her daggers while laying down on the ground, then accidentally dropped one. It ain’t as cool as fighting an alligator, or taking down twenty wardens at once though

Jekiv

(Glow up of the fucking century my dude. He ain’t abandoning his love for pastels anytime soon, but that almost makes him more scary. Exchanged his old staff for a scythe just for the aesthetic. If you look closely at the hand holding the scythe, you can see a golden ring)

*Becomes a mass murderer* ~Character development~

He’s still not a full fledged necromancer yet, though he can summon entire corpses now. Actually getting them to do his bidding is another thing

The squirrel on his shoulders is named Chimp. She’s his familiar, and she’s thirsty for blood

Has spent nearly four years trying to solve the mystery of The Evermoore, but hasn’t come out with much result

Did find out he has no soul, or at least not a traditional one, so that’s neat!

Existential crisis aside, Jekiv is also trying to figure out a way for their code to be fixed.

Novo

(Pov: Ur about to want and rip your ears off. Hat decorated, coat fluffy, heels fucking iconic, my man has the drip. A weird drip, but the drip nonetheless. And after all these years, he still does the ruined makeup look. Some things never change)

Switched to playing the bagpipe, because those things are both loud and difficult to learn to play. Novo does not know how to play, but that doesn’t stop him one bit

Best big brother to Oli’s child, and with that I mean the absolute worst influence a child could ask for

Actually managed to reconcile with Scott, despite all odds. It’s not a perfect father-son relationship, but like none of them have that so it’s fine

Wears a lot of pink partly to match with Gert, and partly because it’s a loud and obnoxious color, so it garners attention

The wealthiest of all the kids, just by people paying him to leave him Tf alone

There’s some fic ideas I still have with the kids, plus maybe the fourth series will give me some new material, but these are probably the final designs I will make for them.
