If parenting has taught me anything, it is the importance of getting down on your hands and knees and teaching not just facts, but love and enthusiasm for the natural world.

This is my son Q and me. I have dozens of photos like this by now, even though he is just two years old.

Every chance I get, I will kneel down with him and show him the little creatures all around us. Especially when they are frogs. He loves frogs for some reason. No idea why.

It is important that we all see this together. It is beautiful. It is magnificent. We are here. It is improbable to the highest degree. It is fleeting, but it is everything we get. And we can get so, so much of it. If we just get our faces into it and really absorb it.

So that's what l'm trying to do here, I guess. Get all of you to join me in the reeds. And I am so happy to have so many of you along for the journey.

When does Tolkien start entering the public domain?

(In reference to this poll https://www.tumblr.com/elodieunderglass/730451774219190272 where I tagged it supporting my own personal theory and added that when Tolkien enters the public domain WATCH OUT)

Tolkien’s works enter the public domain in the USA, uk and Canada 70 years after his death - so 2043 with open season starting 2044.

If we’re all still around in 20 years’ time, make a note of it! I’ll write you a story with unhinged hobbit family structures, the Shire being a place that dampens magic, and the unauthorised yet strangely canonical adventures of Belladonna Took and the Silmarils. It will be 200,000 words long and written in the correct tone, and I promise to do completely immersive research to colour in the background: every linguistic reference, Anglo-Saxon folkway, Icelandic influence, weirdly deep dives into topics like kinship moiety and subtle mischief that characterises Tolkien’s work. This would be so funny to me.

Everyone will be racing to publish basic porn and games; the d&d franchise which will be world-eating in 20 years will finally get to drop the pretense of “halflings,” Witcher and other franchises ditto; all the fantasy writers who have tugged at the tit for so many generations will finally be able to do it openly, and the films will be constant and abysmal. But we, we alone, we happy few alone and free; we will be giggling together, like playing dolls, over what the people REALLY want: constructing elaborate conlang puns with a 200k textual payoff.

It will be my honor to work on this for no reason at all, and I will ceremoniously give it to you in exchange for £7.99. And we will laugh and laugh and laugh

Imagining playfully flirting with Ring, not really meaning anything by it, but it means the world to him. And you keep giving him more.

Thinking he's cute, loving his reactions when he gets flustered, so you keep telling him how handsome he is. Touching his shoulder and gently holding his hand. Each time his face turns red and he does his best to look unaffected. Honestly being more interested in one of the Crown, but not minding having some fun with Ring.

Little do you know that every single romantic gesture means so much more to him than you could possible imagine. His heart beats out of his chest and he thinks it must be real love. That he must be in love, and that you must be too. Why else would you look into his eyes so sincerely, and look so happy when you saw him, and rest your hand on his chest?

It's on a whim when you kiss him. Cupping his cheek with your hand so softly and how he immediately turns pink and his eyes light up. How could you not press your lips against his? And steal his first kiss. Something happens in his brain. And you're suddenly the one.

It's all fun and games until one day your teasing escalates far too quickly. But it's perfectly fine. You were alright with a one-night stand with him. But something in him snaps when you sink yourself onto him and take his ultimate first. And you finally notice this time.

He's thrusting fast into you. Panting in your ear. Going at a feral pace. Possesively wrapping his arms around you. For the first time, he's not shy and you aren't in control. It's all you can do to hold him as tight as you can, the one thing grounding you, as you whine his name over and over and your eyes widen from the intensity. He kisses your ear, whispering how he knew you were the one. How he's so lucky to have you and is never going to let you go. How he can't wait to marry you.

I LOVE THIS. so much that it's getting two chapters. i've posted the first chapter on AO3 here, and the actual nsfw bit will be coming at a later date, but here's a snippet:

There were a million possible reasons why she reached for it.

Perhaps because it looked cool and smooth, and the cave system they'd spent four whole hours wandering was choked with heat, radiating thick from the core of the planet close beneath their feet. Or maybe it was the object's scintillating surface: the way a thousand colours seemed to shift within it, illuminated by the unsteady beam of his sonic screwdriver. It certainly had an opalescence that made it difficult to look away.

Or possibly, he considered, she was just bored. The endless winnowing caves leading them deeper and deeper had all been dull in their uniformity with the exception of vague, rough-carved sigils dotting the walls. After the first twenty or so, Rose had lost interest.

Regardless of the why, she did reach for it.

And the odd thing was, he didn't feel inclined to stop her.

When she lifted it, it didn't look heavy. Though it was oblong and somewhat cylindrical, it seemed to fit comfortably in her palms, stretching out just beyond the tips of her fingers. She looked up at him, and said, "What is it?"

He didn't know how to answer—but he wouldn't have had the chance, anyway.
