I just think that 'animals are living intelligent creatures that have feelings and deserve to be respected' and 'when done properly farming is beneficial to both people and animals and there's nothing wrong with raising and killing animals for food, clothing, and other products' are concepts that very much can and should coexist

Gray Wolves spotted in Oregon spark hope that the species will make a full comeback
Gray Wolves spotted in Oregon spark hope that the species will make a full comeback
A family of gray wolves was recently spotted in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains, and Oregon Wildlife officials are hoping this indicates a resurgence of the species. The number of wolf groups in the area has been bumped up to three since the August sighting.  The new family of wolves is confirmed to consist of two adults and two pups. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has been following the…

Some may call it “boring” and “mostly pointless” and “none of these whale facts are even remotely correct,” but I think that Moby Dick actually has perfect pacing for a book about a whaling voyage. When I read it, I feel as though I am Queequeg, and I am out on the open ocean where whole weeks pass between anything happening and my main source of entertainment is listening to my husband Ishmael explain all the questionable whale facts he has tattooed on his body.

this isn't even part of the update but shout outs to when you're grocery shopping and siruud tells you about hunting for his food and you can be like Hm. What are the ecological implications of this. never felt more represented in media then i did in that moment. horny train of thought fully derailed for contemplating logistics
have you watched dungeon meshi? sometimes contemplation of the ecological impact on the food chain IS horny.
also I'm tired home from work so I bring you:

i want to live in the world where dragon age inquisition got to have the in-depth strategy / political organization sim elements bioware obviously wanted it to have where your decisions in managing the inquisition actually meant anything for how it operates and had effects on the game world. sadly we live in the universe where art needs to make profit

thoughts on the malleganic penguin .. your rant about penguins made me so invested
OH THESE WERE THE LITTLE BASTARDS I WAS TALKING ABOUT (I GOT THEM CONFUSED WITH THE GALAPAGOS I NEED TO BE SHOT I KNOW)
Tumblr media
for the people who bore witness to my penguin rant i need to show the difference between the black foot/african penguin and these lil sillies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the baby on the left is a black footed penguin while the right's our south american bestie :) the key way to distinguish them is whether they have that black line on their neck: black foot penguins will have that spot be white, while magellanic all have it be black
as the name suggests african penguins are the only penguins (that we know of rn 👁️👁️) to live off the coast of south africa, meanwhile, magellanic penguins live off the cost of chile and argentina in south america
SINCE WE'RE HERE THOUGH we can talk about their other relatives in the spheniscus Banded Penguin family 👯‍♀️
THIS is the galapagos i was mistaking the magellanic for
Tumblr media
they're similar to magellanic in that their necks are black and that they also live in south america (off on the galapagos islands Go Figure), though their white chinstrap's a lot thinner than the former. moreover, that patch of pink flesh differs in that it travels downward opposed to arching on the eyebrow bone
Tumblr media
the humbolt penguins are my favorite of this family :) they're the third tallest among the four (second begin magellanic while the first being the black foot, little galapagos being the shortest). they're super distinct by the pink glands on their face. Taking Up More Of Their Face. unsurprisingly, they also live in south america off the coast of peru and chile
anyway thank you for joinin me on my penguin rant Part Two :) i like penguins :)

So many films and books seem to want to make points about the balance of nature, but always seem to fall back on using destruction (wildfires, predator-based death, etc) as tragedies or signs that nature is out of balance. Not to mention the shallow portrayal of all human activity in a forest as inherently 'against' nature. So much for balance

:( Told 'ya A Wolf Called Romeo had a sad ending.
I'm not even SAD (although it is sad), I'm just MAD. It's not even just Romeo (although that was the first/main thing), these guys were like. Habitually awful to wildlife AND their fellow humans and they just... got away with it. AUGH.

quick rant and then i'm done but i just saw someone commenting that we can use hunting and fishing as a talking point to "reach across the aisle" and get conservatives to realize they should care about conservation and the environment and i actually wanted to fucking scream. like. you dumb motherfucker how do you not get that hunters and fishers are conservationists. that they are actively doing conservation while you make snide comments about how you can "convert" them (while also, of course, assuming that hunters and fishers are all right wingers) without realizing that these are people who both love animals and have decided to dedicate their lives to their conservation

Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus), calf with mother, family Tapiridae, order Perissodactyla, found in SE Asia
ENDANGERED.
Endangered due to overhunting and habitat destruction.
They now have a a very spotty distribution in extreme SE Asia, mostly in peninsular Malaysia and Indonesia.

“National parks have been vital in protecting huge swaths of land, including sacred sites and unique ecosystems, from land developers and other forms of destruction and are some of the last places in the continental United States where many animals are able to live safely from overhunting and unnecessary culls.”
and
“National parks are, just like the rest of the US, land stolen from indigenous people who are now denied access to the lands that their ancestors lived on and cared for for thousands of years, even when having access is vital for a community’s survival, whether that’s through food sources in the form of hunting/fishing/gathering or the ability to continue cultural practices.”
and
“National parks provide places for people to feel connected to nature and to able to observe plants and animals and land masses that they’d never be able to see otherwise, and many national parks also include other services like horseback riding lessons and educational events to help people better understand their planet.“
and
“National parks, including with the famous motto ‘take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints,’ push an ahistorical and frankly dangerous narrative that separates humans from nature, turning people into observers of our world instead of active participants, and does damage to the plants that adapted and evolved at the hands of foragers to benefit the most when they’re harvested.“
