Do you know "Baur-meges"? The collection of steppe legends? There is something about werewolfs. A werewolf is able to live for years with you, and then it turns when you do not notice! Then don't be surprised, when your family all at a sudden will be in the cemetery.

Pardon the weird phrasing (it's the 2006 localization; Classic HD renders this as about "turnskins" which I think is a weaker image) but this line from a boy NPC is a part of rubin world to me... we know he's familiar with Kin folklore, so it lends a bit of weight to his ability to believe that Artemy killed Isidor. as not literally about a werewolf, but a parable about failing to notice a person changing or simply holding murderous intentions

THAT SAID. clara and the shabnak are described as "steppe werewolfs" several times in this localization and By God, She Does Turn Her Family To Be In The Cemetery :-)

Hi! I saw today that the episode split is actually 5-3 June to July, not 4-4 like I assumed. Thoughts?

yes! so i'm not surprised because thanedd is happening episode 6, and this is going to be a big thing that the season builds up to and i'm presuming episodes 6, 7 and 8 will all be dealing with the events of thanedd and subsequent fallout. so it probably makes sense from the flow of the season that it breaks after episode 5. additionally, according to redanian intelligence the trailer footage is all from episodes 1-5 (except for one shot of aretuza), so it seems like they're really keeping thanedd under wraps as something to build to.

but honestly i don't think it makes the split any better? ordinarily i like a split season because it keeps interaction and hype going for longer, but the problem is that hype for this season already feels incredibly low. i feel like more people are less excited for this season and more reluctant to see where it goes? already people are treating it as a 'last season' because of henry leaving and are only watching for that reason, and although i then understand from a money-grabbing viewpoint why netflix would want to milk that while they still can, it just doesn't feel like this is the right time to play this card. fans already have no trust in the writing, no faith in where this season is going, and i feel that to win people back the more logical decision here would be to release everything all at once because you need thanedd to regain that hype. from a selfish perspective i also just want the season all at once so i can form an opinion on whether it has redeemed itself from the mess of season 2, or so i can just be done with it if not.

I've always found Alexander Saburov interesting, especially P1 Rubin's take on him where he tells how Alexander in incognito saved people from burning house and went unrecognized for the deed (nor flaunted it). Wonderful and easy to miss characterization.

YES saburov's fucked up sense of performing duty by putting himself at risk... my favorite... have had thoughts brewing in response to this that aren't quite cooked enough yet but it's very much a gendered standard that he holds himself to IMO, of idealized masculinity as a responsibility. as an active role and as the way things must be done. making the choices that he thinks need to be made regardless of how bad they are for him. pairing beautifully with katerina's self-destructive attempts to conform to the extremely feminine-gendered role of mistress, pairing wonderfully with the two of them's catastrophic attempt to conform to the heteropatriarchal nuclear family archetype by adopting the changeling :^) and especially how this is a function of how saburov relates to his Job, a role that's been passed down in his family and Actually Is critical to the function of the Town, inescapably so as long as the system of rulers exists
