‘The Panakes Tree’ - kotlc fanart

I’d been wanting to paint Calla’s Panakes tree for a while now, and I finally got around to it. It’s made with acrylic paint (a medium that’s relatively new to me), and took around 3 hours in total.

If you squint, you can see Havenfield and some dinosaurs in the background to the left of the tree, and there’s also a bag of opened E.L.Fudges at its base (leftover from when Keefe tried human biscuits for the first time). Anyways, I really like how it turned out and thought I should share the end result with you guys! :D

Panakes Kisses

Sophie and Keefe were hanging out under the Panakes tree, Keefe being absolutely goofy, as per usual. 

“Maybe I should start calling you Shorty instead of Foster,” Keefe snickered. “You barely even reach my chin!”

Sophie rolled her eyes, smiling. “I’m not that short.”

“If you’re not that short, then why do I have to bend down to kiss you?” Keefe said smugly, running a hand through his already tousled hair. 

Sophie huffed. Keefe had a point- he did have to bend down to kiss her. 

“It’s ok, Foster, I think it’s adorable.” Keefe kissed the top of her head. “Little teeny-tiny Foster.”

“Hey!” Sophie poked him in the side. Big mistake- Keefe was a menace when it came to tickle fights. Within minutes, he had her pinned against the tree, arms against her side, smirking down at her. Then, he bent down and kissed the tip of her nose.

“Ok, fine, you win.” Sophie relented. “But can I get an actual kiss now?” 

“Only if you can reach.” Keefe winked at her. What a dumbass. Sophie tried to push off the tree and give herself some height to kiss Keefe on the lips. Key word: tried. She was still a few inches short, and ended up kissing Keefe’s neck instead, right below his jaw. 

Keefe suddenly released her arms, turning away.

“Sorry,” Sophie mumbled. “You know I’m clumsy.”

“It’s fine.” Keefe squeaked. Why did his voice sound like that? What was wrong?

Sophie walked around to where Keefe was facing, concerned about him. 

“Keefe? What’s wrong?” she asked, confused.

“Noth-nothing,” Keefe stammered, avoiding her gaze. 

Suddenly, Sophie realized that Keefe was blushing bright red. Why was he blushing? A theory popped into her head: maybe Keefe really enjoys neck kisses… 

Well, only one way to find out. Sophie thought gleefully.

“Well, if you’re sure you’re ok, I want to try to kiss you again.” she said slyly, stepping closer to Keefe.

“What is going on in that head of yours, Foster? You’re planning something and I know it.” Keefe eyed Sophie suspiciously. “I don’t trust this…”

“Oh stop being a baby,” Sophie rolled her eyes. “After all, I’m just a teeny-tiny Foster, right?”

She stood on her tiptoes, acting as if she was going to try to kiss him on the lips. She stopped abruptly, looking towards the dinosaur pastures. 

“Keefe, is that Silveny over there?” she asked. Keefe looked over to where she was pointing, oblivious to her sneaky little trap. While Keefe was distracted, Sophie mustered up her courage and pressed a gentle kiss onto Keefe’s neck, right where she had accidentally kissed before. Keefe let out a small gasp.

“Foster-” he began, looking redder than Dex’s hair.

“I knew it!” Sophie shouted triumphantly. “I found your weakness!”

“What? No, you just… surprised me is all.” Keefe weakly tried to explain. “I, uh, uhm…”

“Liar.” Sophie smirked at him. “Now I have something to make fun of you for.”

Keefe made a melodramatic ‘offended’ face. 

“Foster, when have I ever made fun of you?” he asked indignantly. Sophie raised an eyebrow in response. “Ok, ok, I get it, I do that a lot.”

He gently traced circles on her back with his fingertips. 

“But don’t knock it till you try it, m’kay Foster?” Keefe whispered in Sophie’s ear. She shivered. There was a moment where nothing happened, and then… Then, she felt Keefe’s lips on her neck, sending a shiver of electricity down her spine. She let out the same small gasp that Keefe had made earlier. Sophie could feel her heartbeat all the way down in her toes.

Keefe pulled away, flushed and proud. Sophie was sure her face was beet red. 

“Not so cocky now, eh Foster?” Keefe teased. Sophie had no response.

Now she fully understood Keefe’s reaction to the heaven of neck kisses

keefe LOVES it when Sophie messes with his hair - he pretends to be all “aw come on stop that” but it makes him feel so happy

Sophie likes to just hug attack keefe at times

She pretends to hate keefes nicknames for her but she actually loves them

Keefe steals Sophie’s iPod and listens to her music sometimes

They both love sitting outside at the panakes tree both in clear and rainy weather

Grady was like “no way you are not dating That Boy” but eventually he just let them be

Marella Reek angst

I watched her, smiling and talking, her lips moving in a hypnotizing way. She shifted on the couch, listening to someone talk. It wasn't fair.

Edaline smiled as she set snacks down in front of the group. She didn't even look at me, sitting on the floor. She just patted Sophie's shoulder and left. I turned my eyes back to the beauty with soft black hair.

She laughed, hand covering her face as she exchanged some stupid joke with the others, someone in the corner of my eye using their hands to tell the story. They all looked so close. They were all just the bestest of friends, weren't they? My eyes burned. I stood up.

It. Wasn't. Fair.

I walked away. I shut the door behind me. Nobody followed. My steps were slow at first, my footsteps muffled by the grass, but it wasn't long before I started running. And not too long after that I was crying. It wasn't fair.

I ran past the Panakes tree, beautiful blossoms swaying. I could've known the gnome who saved everyone's lives. I could've lived with her, talked with her, heard her stories and eaten her food. But I hadn't. It wasn't fair.

I reached the gate on the outskirts of the sanctuary. I wrestled with the lock. Damn the Ruewens for closing it up. I grabbed the lock, and sent all the rage I could into my hand. It melted and fizzled, burning the grass below it as I wrenched the gate open. The beach was beautiful as the sun set. The ocean blurred as I ran towards it. Not too far from the water, I tripped into the sand. I didn't try to get up.

I screamed. It was muffled by the sand covering my mouth, and gritting my teeth made a gross crunch echo in my head. I spat out as much as I could, panting and crying as I laid in the sand. How was this fair?

I sat up, looking out across the water as tears streamed down my cheeks.

How can they sit in there? How can they laugh and talk and enjoy the company of their friends after everything that happened?

I gripped my head, crying out as images shot through my head. Nightfall, Fintan, and my mom. She was so beautiful, but no one ever thought that like they used to. Now it's all mocking tones and side glances.

I started crying harder.

I was so absorbed in my head, I didn't hear the footsteps until there was a hand on my shoulder. I jumped, turning to smack it away, and Dex quickly backed up a few steps.

“Woah, sorry. I'm…I just wanted to, uh, check on you.” He rocked on his heels, looking away awkwardly. I scrubbed my face, trying to brush the sand off my cheeks.

“I'm fine.”

“You don't seem fine.” He mumbled, then cowered as I glared at him.

“Okay, fine. Maybe I'm not.” I snapped, breathing hard through my nose as I brushed the sand out of my hair.

“Uh, right.” He sat gingerly next to me, twisting his fingers together. “You know, I know how you feel.”

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to scoff in his face and point and yell. Of course he didn't. How could he?

“I…do you remember our second year?” He asked me. I didn't respond. He awkwardly cleared his throat, “well…well I've been thinking about it a lot. We talked a lot back then. We always traded prattle pins,do you remember?” He gave me an awkward smile. I only buried my face in my knees. He kept going. “When Sophie befriended the Vackers, I thought my life was over. I thought that I would lose her to pretty boy Fitz and never hang out with her again. And it definitely felt that way…” he sighed, tugging on his shirt sleeve. “But I made up with Fitz. After he was attacked, when we were on the run. I thought of you a lot that day, you know?” He looked over at me, sadness written all over his face. I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you never got that.” He looked down at the sand, running his finger through it.

“What're you talking about?” I asked, sitting up and looking at him. He'd really grown into himself over the years. He wasn't a kid who had to fight for his right to be noticed anymore, and yet, he still seemed like he shrunk away.

“Fitz didn't take Sophie from me. But he took her from you. So did Keefe, and Biana, and the twins. And…and me too.” He looked away guiltily.

“I thought I was everyone's second thought. Recently, especially. I've felt like I'm just Dex who you call in your panic switch cause you're in trouble, but never ask how my day is going. I'm Dex who you drag along when you need something built, but didn't ask me if I'm free that night. I'm only there when people want me. I've gotten so bitter about it. But at least I got called, you know?” He rubbed his eyes. I looked away, eyes burning again.

“You look so detached whenever you hang out with us. You stare at Linh for a while, then leave early. I can't stop thinking about how bad we screwed you over. We've put so much pressure on you only to turn away from you to deal with it all by yourself. I've been thinking about how awful of me that was…putting someone else in a place that I've been in too many times.” He turned to me, and I had to wipe my eyes again. This stupidly sweet kid was making me cry all over again. “Marella, I'm so sorry.” His voice broke as his lip wobbled. I didn't hesitate to reach out and hug him as he shook. I pat his back awkwardly.

“Dex…that was big of you. Thank you. That really means a lot.” I leaned back as he sat up, wiping his face. He nodded, then gave me a weak smile.

“Marella Redek, how's your day going?”

“It's actually much better than it was before, Dex Dizznee. How about yours?”
