A piano roll designed to be heard — yet now only seen. A piece titled “Song Without Words” — yet now without sound. Hand-played by Ethel Leginska, one of the first women to conduct major orchestras, who fought for both musical and personal expression in a time that preferred quiet obedience.

These holes are her hands, her pressure, her breath. But there is no pianola. Only paper and memory.

The piece itself — a “song” that rejects language, speaking purely through melody. Mendelssohn believed meaning lived beyond words — that music could express what language couldn’t.

It’s a poignant mirror of the signal // noise project. This is music for the unheard. Perception without sound. Emotion without speech. Signal, stripped.

Danny In All His Sleep Deprived Slightly Scuffed Up From A Fight Glory Is On His Way To Clockworks Tower To Hopefully Get A Nap And Maybe Some Homework Done When A Natural Portal Opens Up In Front Of Him And Proceeds To Unceremoniously Drop Him In The DC Verse Just Outside Of Central City Before Promptly Closing Leaving A Tired Danny Behind In A Run Down Abandoned Parking Lot.

It's Times Like This When Danny Regrets Putting Off Learning How To Make His Own Portals, Cause Now He Is Very Much Stuck For The Foreseeable Future And He Has No Idea Where Or When He Is. Luckily For Him However Central City Isn't Too Far Away, Unlucky For Him However Is That Once In The City He Realizes This Isn't His Dimension. He's Pretty Sure He'd Remember Something Called The Justice League.

So What Do You Do When Supernatural Bullshit Fails You? You Fall Back On Your Mad Scientist Roots And You Make A Portal Gun. So That's Exactly What Danny Plans To Do.

Unfortunately Staying Alive And Building Questionably Safe Portal Technology Requires Money And Supplies, So He Ends Up Wandering From City To City Doing Odd Jobs/Fixing Up Busted Tech For Cash Or Unwanted Electronics For His "Operation: Get Home" Needs. This Obviously Ends In A Few Superhero Encounter Shenanigans.

Though He Always Ends Up Back Near Central City, Both On The Off Chance The Natural Portal Will Open Up Again And Because Out Of All The Superheroes That Apparently Exist In This Universe The Speedsters Are His Favorite (Red Robin Is Solidly His Second Favorite Ever Since The Gotham Vigilante Gave Him A Large Coffee Filled With Enough Caffeine To Kill A Man).

Unbeknownst To Danny However Is That Every Hero/Vigilante He Has Encountered Has Come To At Least One Of The Following Conclusions; 1. Run Away Meta Who Is In Desperate Need Of A Good Meal/Adoption Bait. 2. Possibly Red Robin/Tim Drake Clone 3. A Good Kid But Could Possibly Be A Future Rouge If Left Unsupervised. 4. Did Bats Get A New Kid And Why Is He Here?

All Flash Knows Is That He Saw The Kid First And Therefore Has Dibs. Suck It Bruce.

Fast-forward A Few Months And Danny Gets Hurt During A Rogue Attack While Trying To Help Some Civilians Get To Safety (Old Hero Habits Die Hard (Ha Die Hard) And All That Jazz) And He Nopes Out Once Everyone Is Safe And When The Paramedics Are Busy With Other People Unaware He Left A Blood Sample Behind.

One DNA Test Brought To You By Paranoid Bat Concerns Of A Possible Red Robin Clone Later And They Find Out That Dannys DNA Matches One Ra's Al Ghul.

They Now Think Danny Is An Escaped Ra's Al Ghul Clone.

What if Siffrin starts… not remembering, but adjusting?

Every loop Mirabelle speaks up in the corridor to go find the switch, but eventually…

They start stopping before she speaks up.

He starts finding the keys just a little bit faster.

He doesn’t remember but his body starts to. Some part of him starts adjusting with each loop.

“I mean he hardly has a memory to begin with so why would wiping it reset him?”

Or at least that’s what Loop explains it as.

It’s convenient at first, but…

He starts remembering how cold the party has been.

He starts avoiding eye contact with Odile.

They jump at Mirabelle’s voice sometimes.

He starts avoiding the observatory room.

Folding in disagreements faster.

After countless loops everyone notices that Siffrin starts one level higher now.

He’s smiling more. But there’s something wrong about it.

Everyone notices when he smiles at the mirror for the first time.

They just assume it might be a tiny remnant, not much to be concerned about.

They notice that his face stops changing, the smile remains.

Stock still.

Practiced.

Then…

He stops comforting Bonnie after they snap at him one loop.

Frankenstan AU where Ford successfully brings back Stan. His brother is alive again and he couldn't be happier. Stan is actually here! Finally! He's ready to work things out, as soon as they deal with Bill.

Speaking of Bill... He hasn't been around in a few days since the revival. Ford knows that Bill hasn't possessed him recently; even though he can't remember what he does when Bill is in control, he can sense when his body has been used against his will. And that feeling hasn't been there in almost a week.

Ford doesn't understand. But most importantly, he doesn't understand Stan. He's alive and mostly healthy. His body has stitches all over, but his organs are functional. Save for some small details, he's himself again. So why is he acting so unlike him? He hides, he murmurs instead of speaking up, he's sneaky and careful and he stares at the walls for too long sometimes. He's jumpy and silent, and avoids looking at him almost constantly.

There's only one explanation. That is not his brother.

"I'll make it right this time. I promise, Stan," he says, and he pulls the trigger.

(Or: Ford's paranoia + Bill's subtle but constant influence on him makes Ford believe that Stan's demeanor has changed so much not because of what he's gone through in the past decade, but because Bill is somehow inside of him. He's determined to get his "real" brother back, and he won't stop until Bill is unable to enter Stan's body. No matter how many tries it takes.)

It's that time again...

Good news. No more hanging off that cliff. You crawl back up here and face the angst now.

Paper Memories (Part Two) actually isn't fully written yet, but I'm gonna post it in three arcs (like 10-11 chapters each) while I'm working on it. First arc is done and ~74k words. Trying to keep the chapters under 9k this time 😂 and also sticking to one POV per chapter.

This will be updated mostly on Wednesdays and the occasional Saturday.

Paper Memories (Part Two)

Summary:

This is the sequel to "Paper Memories (Part One)." This is Part Two of Two. Part Two is about Faith and Forgiveness. Xie Lian has found himself in a rather unusual and dire situation. Not only does he have two amnesiac ghost kings cooped up in his shrine, but Hua Cheng has mysteriously regressed into the form of a child. While Xie Lian is determined to return his Beloved's memories, he also has the help of Shi Qingxuan who is equally driven to restore and confront the person he once considered his best friend. It will be up to the two of them to track down the powerful memory-eating steam spirit who has done this, and with any luck, find a way to return all that has been stolen away by her. This includes Xie Lian’s own lost memories. What could have driven him to nearly commit genocide?
