General Information on Cinema Lenses for DSLR Cameras

Cine lenses are designed specifically for filming, and thus they have some key differences from still photography lenses.

1. Cine lenses use T-stops to measure aperture. This gives you the exact measure of the amount of light passing through the lens. The iris lense is also clickless, allowing you to change the aperture much more smoothly, without it seeming jarring to the viewer.

2. Cine lenses also have more accurate focus marks, that are in feet. Allowing for more accurate focusing, and the ability to use a follow focus.

3. Cine zoom lenses are often parfocal, meaning that zooming does not impact focus. Unlike still lenses which are varifocal, thus can lose focus when zooming.

4. Cine lenses use an internal focus, meaning that the lense does not change size as you zoom.

Best Practice for Handling Cine Lenses

Use 2 hands at all times

Never hold more than one lens at once

Take the front and back cap off and leave them in the case. This minimises the chance of losing them

When handing the lens to someone else, make sure to check that they have a sturdy hold on the lense by waiting for them to state that they do, or asking them before letting go.

Cleaning

First, attempt to remove dust using a blower tool. Blowing air gently at the lense. If this doesn’t work, try using compressed air (the type designed for lenses). DON’T USE MICROFIBRE CLOTHS. If you are trying to remove smudges from the lens, use high grade lens cleaning fluid, and lens wipes. Put the cleaning fluid on the wipe (NOT ON THE LENS) and clean in a circular motion, beginning in the centre and working outwards.

When Finished

Put the lenses back in their case with the front and back caps on. If possible set the focus to infinity, and the T-stop to 1.5

Lighting

Due to time constraints we only got to look at one style of lighting, three point lighting. This lighting system uses three lights:

The Key Light - This is the main light and is used to illuminate the subject. This light usually falls between 3 and 9 when looking at the set as a clock face (see image above).

The Fill Light - This is used to fill in the shadowed side of the subject and to lower the contrast. This is usually placed on the opposite side to the key light. Though it can be placed on the same side as the key light, but above the camera. It cannot be brighter than the key light.

The Back Light - AKA The Kicker, The Accent Light, or The Rim Light. This is used to separate the subject from the background, giving more depth to the scene.
