so hard not to become the most annoying person on earth if you're a little excitable and just learned a little about a topic literally no one around you has any interest in
#unforch ive been laserfocused on the composition of toilet cleanibg products and (unrelated) international fishing politics this week so far#i want to talk about anti limescale chemicals 😫 and chinese ships off the coast of west africa 😐#TO EVERYONE IN THE NOTES: don't worry i am not particularly wounded by the awareness that my coworkers would not appreciate a rant#it is a good idea to make sure your conversations remain dialogue and not uninvited monologue for an uninterested captive audience#there is a time and place for excited half-informed monologues.

the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.
#i would imagine this is true for many pieces of media consumed at 13#but btvs is a particularly powerful drug to get hooked on#(she said while further mixing her metaphors)#btvs#buffy the vampire slayer#buffy summers

The doubling of tribute numbers. The miscarried Abernathy twins. The Donner sisters who Haymitch carries a fascination for as consequence. Louella being replaced by Lou Lou, a name that only mimics the first half of her name, and a girl who matches her in appearance only. Tam Amber’s set of pins, one dropped down a well, the other discarded. The two versions of the games: the one that Haymitch remembers and the edited, falsified version of them without the real content. The two bags of gumdrops. The fraternal affection he feels for Louella and Lou Lou, the artificial twins, and Maysilee’s offer to be his sister—the second one she gives in the book. A bond with a real twin, both pairs healing the sisters he never did know. The split between what is natural and what is manufactured or forged, bonds that that grow on their own, or are forced into existance. And if the distinction makes any difference to the person it impacts.
#you can even look at it temporally: that haymitch is the one who came before Katniss#bestie the themes of duality really pop off in this book#sotr#sotr spoilers#sunrise on the reaping#sunrise on the reaping spoilers#thg#thg spoilers#suzanne collins#my post#haymitch abernathy#maysilee donner#louella mccoy#Lou Lou#edit: I was corrected that the idea of an Appalachian legend of mimics is something contemporary that popped up w the internet#I removed it bc I hate to spread misinformation—even benign stuff#particularly when it’s abt a culture I’m not from

Feeling incredibly sick and angry about everything. I’ll go about my day and try to be normal and then it just ambushes me and honestly the only people keeping me sane rn are the Arabs who’ve voiced similar experiences and are staying the course and being vocal despite all the attempts to basically blame everything that’s wrong with this country on us
#Particularly my Arab mutuals like they have been such a godsend#If not for the like minded individuals I’ve met through this app I would’ve gone fucking insane

Watching my first watch through of SPN ever. I’m on season 9 and as someone who has been on tumblr since ancient times but didn’t actually get in to it, I think everyone DOWNPLAYED how crazy Destiel is. How did veterans survive that….. It’s just. What. What am I watching. Why does Deans voice get SOFT when he talks to Cas particularly??? Why did Dean ditch Sam to watch Cas at the supermarket???? I think because of the meme I was convinced it was cas who was the one obviously in love but. No. It’s Dean. And it’s embarrassing for him. This is crazy but Destiel fans weren’t crazy y’all were on to something all this time…..
#spn#destiel#Live-blogging as I watch. I don’t know why I haven’t posted my thoughts yet but here they are#queerbaiting is questionable because if you are particularly writing to cater to a queer audience but not ‘go through with it’#that’s just accidental queercoding#thoughts with lemon#supernatural

The thing that I think really sets Murderbot apart from a lot of other robot media (particularly mainstream entries like the I, Robot movie) is that bots and constructs aren't a uniquely oppressed class, and humans aren't a uniquely privileged one. A lot of robot media rings a bit hollow because it portrays humans as all living a lavish, comfortable lifestyle, free from the burden of physical labor or control by their corporate overlords, and it's like. I think if the rise of generative AI has proven anything, it's that corporations and billionaires have absolutely no interest in making life easier for anybody, but will gleefully use new technology to make life infinitely worse if it means an extra buck in their pocket.
We are shown over and over again throughout the Murderbot Diaries that humans are mistreated just as badly as (or sometimes, in MB's own opinion, even worse than) bots and constructs. We see humans stripped of their rights, reduced to corporate assets to be bought and sold, sent into suicidal situations, abandoned and discarded as things. We see humans trapped in multigenerational labor contracts -- people born into an indentured servitude that requires them to pay back their food and lodging to the same company that will not let them leave.
None of these are hypothetical scenarios. These are all things that happen to real people in our world today.
And that is a huge part of why it resonates so much. The overarching theme of "capitalism is hell" actually means something because it isn't only applied to the fictional dynamic of bots vs humans. The theme is constantly reiterated through the humans themselves.
And that's also why it's so important that MB demonstrates empathy for and solidarity with humans who are themselves victims of the system. Because ultimately, that's one of the main things the series is about. It's about what it's like to be simultaneously a product, and victim, of a corporate hellscape.
That theme simply can't work if the humans aren't also forced to navigate that issue. If the story can't acknowledge that right now, in our own world, there are humans facing these same problems, and that these human rights matter quite a bit.
#maybe instead of being mad about the show I should go back to talking about why the books themselves are good#and yes I know some other robot media DOES address this#klara and the sun is a solid example#I just think MB's approach to it is particularly punchy#the murderbot diaries#murderbot

Curious Archive’s newest video about the cultural history of unicorns draws a connection between the huge market of selling “unicorn horn” in sixteenth century Europe and the modern presence of the unicorn as a commercialized symbol across unicorn stickers and unicorn toys and unicorn breakfast cereals and comes to the conclusion, “From the moment we first captured the unicorn, we’ve been selling it”
And I had to stare at the wall for a bit
#like it’s not a particularly revelatory statement to say ‘unicorns have been commercialized out the whazoo’#this is a known fact about unicorns#but the slightest extension of ‘for as long as we have believed in the unicorn#we have wanted to possess it and sell it and market it and own it’#that despite its associations with nature and wildness and freedom and innocence#its default state in western culture for *centuries* has been something we want to possess#bwough#unicorns#curious archive

My favourite underrated thing about Louis de Point du Lac is that he truly is the least curious vampire to ever be made and he does not give fuck about vampires despite being one.
Its Claudia who goes to libraries, reads the folklore, tries to learn as much as she can and pushes Lestat for answers about who made him and where the others are. Claudia says Vampire Pride and Louis says hmmm Vampire Tolerance.
And Louis...truly does not care about vampire history, law, culture. He's never even thought to ask. There are vampire laws?...ok...Lestat never cared about them and he's not going to either, lol. He's broken a few and he will continue to do so. Oh you have a coven? he's not gonna join it, he's gonna do his own thing. but good for you good for you.
the 500+ year old Coven Leader, he's gonna call Louis, Maitre, actually.
He has fire powers? thats kinda cool. he'll learn that but only cause it lets him vent his feelings about Lestat.
Lestat and Armand say the name of the vampire queen in front of him and Lestat straight up says, "Louis has no idea who that is" and do you think Louis cares, outside of the fact that for some reason it means he can't kill Lestat? No! Do you think in the 77 years he's been with Armand he ever took 5 minutes to ask a follow up question? No!
Do you think he will care about Akasha in season 3? Doubt it! Outside of her obsession with Lestat, who is the only person left on the planet he seems to be able to filter Caring About This Shit through
He blatantly breaks the 3rd law and publishes a book about being a vampire and when the other vampires get pissed not only does he not apologise he literally sends them his location and says 'you wanna fight? lmao don't miss'
I love him. Daniel Molloy is gonna need to bring his A game because Louis will not be solving a single mystery next season, nor would it even occur to him to try.
#louis de pointe du lac#lestat de lioncourt#armand#daniel molloy#akasha#iwtv spoilers#iwtv season 3 spec#interview with the vampire#iwtv#claudia iwtv#do you think it has occured to him to follow up on why Real Rashid and Talamasca were in his house? no hes redecorating!#and taking back his ex#and this is not weak or bad writing btw Louis cares about 2 maybe 3 people and does not particularly Like being a vampire#this is all very In Character its just also so funny in a protagonist#1k#5k#10k#15k
