Summary: (Y/n) is an active duty Navy SEAL Commander, the first and only woman to ever become a SEAL. After successfully stopping a genocide with the help of the Avengers, she becomes a bridge between the military and the earth's mightiest heroes. TRIGGER WARNING! THIS SERIES REVOLVES AROUND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER. (Including, but not limited to: anxiety/panic attacks, extreme mood swings , nightmares, intrusive thoughts, insomnia, irritability, hypervigilance, and hyperarousal)

You had to detach yourself from your guilt, at least for now. You and Bucky had taken a quinjet to Lithuania this morning without authorization from the Avengers. Bucky even carelessly made an excuse to Friday, telling the AI he was going to accompany you to Seattle for the day.

As soon as you were in the air, Bucky had deactivated tracking and activated cloaking, so you wouldn't get caught or detected, but that also meant that if there was some sort of emergency, you were on your own.

Bucky was on the pilot seat, entering the exact coordinates based off the data you had filtered down. You, on the other hand, stood near the center table, checking your weapons and ammunitions, making sure they were reliable.

"We're good," Bucky announced, standing up from the seat, "we should be there in 3 to 4 hours." He walked towards you, donning his zipped-up tactical suit, the gold of his vibranium arm gleaming in the soft glow of the lights. Under his shirt pressed into the center of his chest was your dog tags, and you were wearing his, too.

You breathed out, minimally reacting to what he said. There were so many things on your mind, and Bucky could see that. He understood.

He stood next to you, pushing a strand of hair off your face. He gently placed his flesh hand under your chin, lifting and turning it until your eyes locked with his intense blue orbs.

"You alright, doll?" He asked worriedly.

"Sure." Your voice was hesitant, and it did not convince Bucky.

He opened his mouth, but shut it again. He wanted to talk to you about what you mentioned yesterday, about not being able to rest. But he knew this was not the time. He knew that chances are, you'll push him away before he could ask. He will talk to you about it, but not now. He'll find the right time, somehow. He always did.

He cupped your cheeks, rubbing circles on your soft skin. "We're gonna be alright, okay?"

You sighed, placing your hand over his. You loved his hands, delicate fingers under calloused skin. "Okay," you finally said.

You let him kiss your lips, knocking all the air out of your lungs.

The kiss started slow, but soon picked up its pace. Bucky dragged his tongue on your lips, and you let him bite your mouth open.

You put your hand around his arm, holding on to him as he melts further into you.

Bucky felt dizzy, and it was not airsickness. He was almost high on the taste of you, the scent of you. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't help himself but spiral down into the thought of you.

He pushed you back gently, your waist tightly pressed to the table behind you, your right hand steadying yourself on the edge of the table. He pulled away from the kiss before it got too heated pressing his forehead against yours.

"I love—" he started to say, but you beat him to it.

"I love you," you say quickly, making sure it sounded as genuine as you meant it to be.

"Mhmm," Bucky pecked your lips, "I was gonna say that, too."

"Then say it," you urged him, almost teasing, but you had a hint of desperation in your voice.

"I love you," he peppered loving kisses on your face, "and I will never, ever let anything happen to you."

You believed him, because you know you'd do the same too.

Four hours went by faster that you'd expected. Before you knew it, the quinjet touched down in an abandoned heliport in Kaunas, Lithuania at four in the afternoon.

The sun sets in Kaunas at about 4:30, so you only had to wait thirty minutes for the complete cover of night. Bucky sat on the pilot's seat of the quinjet, you on the co-pilot's seat. The two of you stared out the orange sunset over the red-brick European city, a beam of light streaming through the jet's window.

Since you were on higher ground, the city lay before you like a living painting, civilians turning on the city lights. If you blink fast enough, they flash like dying stars. "Beautiful," you sighed, admiring the view. You looked at Bucky, but his eyes were locked on you.

The sunset hue reflected on you made you look like you glow golden, and Bucky's eyes were fixed on you, unwavering. "Mmhmm," he agreed, but you were not so sure if he was talking about the same thing as you.

You smiled at him sincerely before getting up. You dragged an arm light across his shoulder on your way to the back of the quinjet. You zipped up your kevlar suit, securing two glocks on both of you thigh holster. You made sure you took off the trident pin and left it behind. This wasn't a SEAL operation. You respected them too much to drag them into this mess.

Bucky walked to the opposite of you, stocking up his ammunitions and slinging his rifle to his back.

"Let's go," Bucky urged, opening the hatch of the quinjet.

The two of you walked out of the quinjet, but didn't spend much time outside. You descended to the sewers, walking down the narrow path next to the stream of smelly sewage. Bucky followed your lead.

Bucky turned on a flashlight, and you attentively look at the GPS on your armband so you know where to go. Within fifteen minutes, you hit a red brick wall. "Here," you told Bucky.

You pressed a palm to feel the texture the aged red brick, some of it covered in thick moss because of its humidity. You pressed into it and felt a slight pressure change.

"I think this is a door," you said, "But I don't know how to open it."

Bucky looked around for anything that might be used as some sort of lock. He squinted when he saw a suspiciously large box, a metal circuit breaker in a place where it wasn't needed. He tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. He opened the metal plates forcefully. Sure enough, it was a numerical set of buttons and a small screen. "Found something," he said, "and I think I can bypass it."

You turned to him, nodding in approval

He pressed a few numbers, but he was denied. After a few more tries, the thick brick door opened slightly. It would open fully because it was rusted, so you had to pull it apart until it was big enough for the two of you to fit in. Once you got inside, you turned your own flashlight on. There was a staircase that lead upstairs.

"How did you know the passcode?" You asked, tilting your head.

"I remembered," he replied flatly. He remembered Petrov from when he was the Winter Soldier, and he vaguely remembered seeing him enter his passwords.

You stepped up the stairs as carefully as you could, trying not to make a sound, Bucky just a few steps behind.

Once on the top of the staircase, you were faced with a metal door. Before you pushed it open, you pulled out your gun and held it in front of you, just in case.

Opening the door, you entered the dark room, and it seemed eerily similar to the lab you raided in Ukraine.

This lab consisted of two levels above ground in an abandoned part of Kaunas. The glass window were covered up with card boards, old lab equipments covered in white translucent sheets. Like the lab in Ukraine, this one was filled with stainless steel, glass tubes, and filthy grey floors that haven't been swept in years, with the addition of a whole wall of filing cabinets. It looked just as abandoned.

"I'll take first floor," said Bucky, "You take upstairs. Sam might be there."

Nodding, you did as he told you to. You moved to the open staircase on the other side of the room.

As you disappeared out of his sight, Bucky swept the room quickly, looking for anything that caught his eye. Unfortunately, nothing did.

Nothing was suspicious at all, everything was abandoned, cold, and empty.

He sighed, then glanced at the only thing he hadn't touched.

The silver filing cabinets.

Out of curiosity, he looked at the whole wall filled with cabinets. There were worn out labels with the alphabet written on it, and his hand directly ran to the letter 'M.'

He tried to open the drawer, but it was locked. He yanked it open with his human arm, a display of just how strong he was without having to use his bionic limb.

Sure enough, there were so many papers inside it. Most of them were reports, but a few were research files. He delicately ran his finger on the paper, one thing on his mind.

"Come on, Petrov," he whispered to himself, "where did you put it?"

"Mercy, mercy, mercy…" Bucky trailed off, and stopped when he found the file with the right name. In the file wasn't pages of a profile like he'd expected. Instead it was a gold key.

Jesus fucking christ, why did Petrov always have to make everything more complicated than it already is?

Bucky took the key and scanned the room once more. He spotted a loose ceramic floor near the cabinets.

Could it be…?

He hastily took it out, and sure enough, there was a wooden box under there. It was degrading, but only by a little. He picked it up and unlocked it, and he finally had the files to Mercy One and Two's profile.

Finally.

Mercy Two's profile was the first piece of paper he picked up.

His profile was closer the the wood that was breaking down. The photo that came with his profile was the picture of a growing baby inside a medium-sized pod, being kept alive by cables flowing oozing green liquid. The pod functioned as a womb to the growing child. Bucky scanned the profile.

Bucky squinted. There were a few letters after the letter 'T', but it was too faded. Bucky couldn't read it.

He scanned down again and read.

Hair: Black

Gender: Male

Observed and assigned to: Sarah Marin and Abraham Harden

There were photos of Marin and Harden attached, too. These were Hydra agents given a mission to pretend to be Mercy Two's parents. Nolan's false parents. Their mission was to report back any unusual activities Mercy Two might do in his childhood. That was everything on the paper. He wished there had been more information, but he had to work with what he got.

Bucky set Nolan's papers aside, and grabbed Mercy One's profile. He was greeted with a similar photo of a baby in a tube. As he read through it, his heart suddenly sank.

Supersoldier: Negative

Name: (Y/n) (L/n)

What? Bucky thought to himself. This can't be true. (Y/n) had parents. She told Bucky about them. They both worked in the UN anti-terrorism committee.

Unless they were double agents. Unless the reason they were in the UN in the first place was to infiltrate them.

Bucky didn't want to believe it, but the more he read about Mercy One, the more it confirmed that it was you.

Observed and assigned to: Marcel Lowry and Ria Safin

He studied Lowry's and Safin's photograph. Bucky had seen you childhood photos before, some of them even with your 'parents.' And there was no doubt that Lowry and Safin was them. The resemblance was too striking for him to be wrong.

Fuck.

He had to accept it. He had to accept the you are Mercy One.

Bucky read again to make sure he read everything right.

Suddenly, Bucky's cogs in his brain started turning. Everything finally made sense.

You were supposed to be a supersoldier. You were engineered to be one, but you did not show any signs of it. You must've had dormant supersoldier genes. That's why, when Bucky gave his blood to you for the transfusion, you became a supersoldier. It woke your genes up.

Bucky's blood was not the cause, but rather the trigger of your supersoldier abilities.

What was he supposed to do now?

He wasn't going to tell you. He couldn't. He didn't have the heart to. At your mental state, finding out that you were hunting yourself would only add to the already piling problems. He knew how self-destructive you were, or how you can be. He had to keep this a secret, for your sake.

As he quickly tried to stash the files under his tactical suit, he heard a gunshot from upstairs.

His heart plunged into a freefall. You were upstairs.

Charming, sparkling green eyes, piercing right through you. With an intense longing gaze and a mesmerizing grin. Drawing you closer, leaning in, she’s got a hold of you. Absolutely enchanted by her, and her impressive skills, her amazing figure and total fearlessness for everything. Her beautiful red hair tickles on your skin as she presses her soft, red lips on your neck. Melting away at her delicate touch. The fact that she shot you in the leg, minor detail, you’re already over it. Still alive and kicking, right? Her hand moves from your waist to your hips smoothly, and ends up on your back while she pulls you closer. Her body pressed against yours, she has complete control over you. “Stay…”, you beg her, exhaling a bit shaky since you struggle to breathe correctly. Giving in and closing your eyes in satisfaction as your heart flutters. With a soft voice she whispers in your ear, sensing her warm breath on your skin:

“Agent (Y/L/N)? Are you hearing this?”, Coulson presses, snapping his fingers displeased, probably in response to your silence and absent-minded stare. “Yes, loud and clear sir”, you answer with a straight face, seated in a small, cramped space on an uncomfortable chair. No windows and barely any fresh air judging by the fusty smell hanging around. “Well then, can you repeat the question for me?”. “...Um-”. Debriefing. That's what they call it. After the second time it started to feel more like an interrogation. “I thought so. I asked if you can walk me through that moment just before Agent Hill arrived. One more time please”, Coulson insists, now leaning on the metal table while assuming an intimidating stature. You’d rather go back to that daydream…. Despite the several ‘interrogation’ attempts by Coulson and Hill, you haven’t told them what exactly happened between Natalia and you, both times. All these questions, asked in a particular, distrusting way. He’s really pushing it. Why even believe some deadly assassin over a government organization anyway? You have mixed feelings about it, about Natalia, about SHIELD and about yourself. Can’t pinpoint the exact reason where it’s coming from, but you have to figure it out. If you had known her before, you would know right? ‘Cause seriously, you don’t forget someone like her that easy. “So, are we done here?”, you urge, suppressing the rage, trying your best not to let it all out. “Yes, all clear Agent (Y/L/N). You’re dismissed”, Coulson states, closing the file in front of him, not written down a single word because you told the exact same story, just like all the previous times. Not cleared for field work yet as you’ve been recovering from the gunshot wound in your leg. Taking it easy and slow, which you undeniably hate. Although, it has given you enough time to think. Not too powerful, you slam both hands on the table in a passive-aggressive way and stand up, hearing the screeching of the metal chair on the floor as you push it back. Without saying another word you exit the room and march off. With a slight limp though, so it’s not as overpowering as intended to, but he got the point.

“Hi Maria!”, you greet, walking through the hallway at SHIELD headquarters, seeing her approach with a fast pace and a dead serious look. “It's Agent H-”. “Agent Hill, I know, I know. I was wondering if you have an assignment for me. It’s okay if it's a routine mission or anything, just give me something to do”, you ask in despair, being bored as hell around here. “I can't. I'm sorry. You haven't gotten the clearance from Coulson yet”, she answers while still moving. “From Coulson?”. Wait, so the doctor already cleared you for duty, yet Coulson didn't? Agent Hill clearly has other matters to attend to, no time to stop or respond as she continued her course with haste. Well… Coulson’s credibility really hit a low point at the moment. Loyal to SHIELD. Trust the system. Words you don't believe in anymore. Okay, it’s true, SHIELD always keeps secrets. But you need answers. Right now. Obviously asking for the information is by far the worst option, no doubt they would lie or cover it up anyway. A group of Agents pass you. They’re gazing at you just a bit too long with their judgy eyes. The story of your failures has been going around, or whatever you might call them. Missing and failing to apprehend the target. Losing the package. You're being watched, your every move, like you’re a traitor, a criminal. Especially Coulson is giving you that feeling. So you have to be careful. Probably the reason why you haven't considered the more obvious choice, which is tracking down Natalia. You have to do this, before talking yourself out of it, it’s now or never.

You chuckle, it’s kinda ironic, the skills taught by SHIELD now used to break-in into their own compound. It sure comes in handy, knowing the routines, codes and how to bypass the security system. Standing in a dark corner with your back against the wall, looking at your watch while counting down the seconds. A couple of guards will pass by any moment now. And… go. Setting the timer. You’ve got 8 minutes, should be enough. Looking over your shoulder one more time while you type in the passcode and covertly slip past the door, into the records room. You’re in. The blue screen lights up your face, and with a hypnotic stare you search for the info, now scrolling through the data of previous SHIELD operations like a maniac. Maybe you encountered her on a mission before, or you were part of a secret SHIELD program, forced to wipe your memory. Can’t find a connection between Black Widow and you. There has to be one, right? Because it feels like there is one. There’s a strange familiarity about her. You have to dig deeper. Accessing your personnel file, maybe that will shed some light on it. 4 minutes and 30 seconds left. A lot of stuff about your past is redacted, the file is filled with secrets. Why? Then you stumble upon a medical report.

“(Y/N)! Can you hear me?!”, Coulson shouts using both his hands to focus the sound while slowly progressing through the thick layer of snow beneath him. The desperation in his voice is all too clear. “Are you sure it’s here?”, Agent Barton asks with a loud voice, also searching, several meters away from Coulson. “Yes, it’s here. It has to be...”. A low, almost inaudible groan has caught Coulson’s attention as he jolts his head and immediately struggles towards it. “Quick Barton, HERE!”. He kneels while pushing some of the ice-cold snow out of the way. “Don’t you think we’re too late Coulson?”. “No. I won’t believe that. I can't”, he utters in concern. No optimism left, until his expression suddenly changes. “I still feel a pulse. It’s very weak, but it’s there. Let's go!”.

Perhaps those recurring nightmares were telling you something… Heavily beaten up, a couple of broken bones, and in your chest, close to your heart, a gunshot wound. Covered in snow mixed with blood and a whole lot of other injuries you were brought into the infirmary of a remote, classified SHIELD location by Coulson and Barton. How did I even survive this? You think, reading the file in disbelief. If that bullet had pierced you a couple of centimeters lower, you would have been dead, no doubt. And the cold temperature apparently saved your life too. There’s more information, it’s of a meeting between Coulson and you. Were you an informant? With Coulson being your handler? But you were told that you’ve been a SHIELD Agent your entire life, and a well trained one too. You believed them, didn’t question them. You even have your own academy records to prove it. “Was it all a lie? Was I a target? A criminal?”, realizing you are one of them. The people that you despise, and hunt for a living, the ‘bad guys’. Turns out you and Natalia are not so different after all. “No, NO. this is- this can’t be true”. There’s an audio file. You’re about to open it when you hear a noise.

“Hey, there’s somebody inside!”. “Fuck”. You still had 2 minutes left!? “Good evening fellas. This doesn’t have to go the hard way”, you advise in a nonchalant fashion, carefully shifting towards them with your hands up, trying to close the distance. “You’re not authorised to be here!”, one of the guards barks at you as two of the four enter. “Okay, suit yourself. Hard way it is then”, you decide while sprinting forward and forcing the door shut with your foot, locking two of them out. The other two inside promptly react and one swings his baton at you. You slip by ducking down. Making a spin while moving up, you hit him with the backside of your right elbow, followed by a left hook just below the eye. The other one moves towards you, swinging his baton. But you grip it tight, along with his other arm, preventing a blow to your head. Perceiving a crackling electricity sound right beside you. Okay... so these are also tasers, how convenient. You toss the guard to the side and taunt with a wide grin: “I can keep this up all day, guys”. Turning your head to the door as it opens again. The short distraction caused you to be forcefully thrown against the just unlocked entrance, with the guards arm crushing your throat. Gasping for air while you're being choked. However, the other two guards luckily can’t get in as you feel them banging on the door. Powerfully kicking him between the legs - always effective - now able to shove the guard back with your arms, to end with a kick in his stomach. You hunch over, hands resting on your knees, and cough due to the lack of oxygen intake. The other guard took this opportunity and has tased you around the waist area with his charged weapon. A painful shock radiates through your torso and you let out a painful cry. Quickly kicking the baton out of his hand and pivoting your whole body, loading up for another one. With the heel of your boot you strike him on the temple. Knocking him out before he crashes to the floor.

“Stop Agent (Y/L/N)!”, a familiar voice orders. It’s Coulson. “Stand down!”. A stinging pain in your neck makes you stop and you reach for it. He shot you with something. Displaying your left hand to see what it is, holding a type of dart in your palm. “This is for your own safety”. “What the h-”. Mid-sentence you collapse on the ground. Your body feels heavy, fading away as it gets dark before your eyes.

“Hello, this is Agent Coulson”. “Sir, the prisoner has finally woken up”, a doctor informs on the phone. “Good. It’s been weeks. I'll be there as soon as possible”. Coulson enters the room inside the remote infirmary facility, however the bed is empty and the cuffs are opened. “What? How-”. He gets grabbed from behind. Trapped in a strong headlock and an IV needle firmly pressed on the skin near his carotid artery. “Easy, easy. So ...I see you’re feeling better (Y/N)”, Coulson carefully speaks as he puts his hands up to show that he's surrendering. “How do you know my name and who the hell are you?! Why was I chained to the bed!? Talk!”. “Do you want answers or not? Then you have to let me go first. Okay (Y/N)?”. “This is Fury”. “Director, it's Coulson. Sir, I'm back in Eastern Europe again and I have an interesting case here. My informant is awake, but has no memory”. “No memory?”. “Yes, sir. No idea about their past whatsoever”. “I see... We could use an Agent with that specific skill set here at SHIELD. They could be a valuable asset”. “My thoughts exactly sir”. “It’s best if no one knows the details about this”. “Nobody will know sir”. “Okay. I trust you Coulson. Agent (Y/L/N) is your responsibility now”.

“I thought I would find you here, sooner or later”. Perceiving Coulson’s voice as you slowly open your eyelids, feeling a little fuzzy. Wanting to move your arms and legs, however you can’t. “What the hell did you do to me?!”, you yell, tied to the chair with your wrist and ankles secured. He definitely injected you with a paralyzing agent earlier. “I should have never assigned you that mission. But I thought you would be the only one that could match up to Black Widow”, Coulson reveals, avoiding eye contact with you. Why would he say that? What is he playing at? Still trying to free yourself by moving around as you feel two hands grasping your shoulders. You shrug them off, but it only causes you to be pushed down with even more force. Detained by the two guards that you fought, having a hateful expression on their face. Can’t blame them though. “You need to fix this Coulson”, you protest, never having felt so enraged and betrayed before. “I can't. It can't be fixed anymore. And trust me, you don't want it to be fixed either”. “Trust you? Not a chance”, you scoff. “You kept this from me, lied to me”. He clearly doesn't want you to know about your past. “You have proven yourself over the years, being an excellent Agent here at SHIELD. Do you want to destroy all that?”. “Cut the crap Phil. What did SHIELD do to me?! I want answers, now”, you demand, not actually in a position to make these at the moment, being tied up and all. “Well, you may not like what you’ll find”, Coulson comments as he’s pacing back and forth. “I don’t care. I had your back. And you took advantage of me, used me for your own means”. Sick of all the secrets, cause it’s driving you crazy. “I just need to know who I am and where I’m from”. Coulson stares at you with a conflicted expression. “You can't know. That is why we lied to you in the first place. The secrets are there for a reason”. “I will never stop looking for answers Coulson”. “I know you won’t”. He looks away and sighs while shaking his head in an upset manner. You hoped this trip to the archives would trigger a memory, yet it didn’t. You’re desperate, not knowing who you are anymore. After some minutes you break the cutting silence. “Did I know her? Did I know Natalia? Come on Coulson, I need to know”. Coulson takes a strong breath in and ponders, hearing the gears turning in his head. “Guards, can you give us the room please?”, he instructs, sending the guards away, leaving you and him alone. He finally decided to give in. Now standing right in front of you, he tells with a deep sigh: “Okay, but you might want to sit down for this”. “...Really Coulson”. Considering the position you’re in, you give him a look, raising your eyebrows. “Well you know what I mean”.

Sitting outside, watching the sunset, Natalia has a picture in her hand. One of the edges is torn off and it’s wrinkled, probably due to the fact that she always carries it with her. The slight discoloration suggests it's an older picture. It's the last and only one she has, possibly the only personal belonging too. On it are two people wearing a uniform, standing side by side. One of them is a red-headed woman, winking at the camera, matched with a subtle grin. The other person close next to her is staring at her with a longing gaze and smiling. Left arm wrapped around her shoulder, being completely enchanted by her. By her laugh, her fiery green eyes and fearlessness. It’s you. You and her in this old picture. Together. Holding it close, Natalia gently caresses the image of you with her thumb and softly whispers:

“I hope one day you’ll remember me...”

Laila slows slightly as she and Cyn meander around the corner near her townhouse. The weather had been so nice that they’d spent the past thirty minutes just ambling around the neighborhood enjoying themselves. Now, the hair on Laila’s arms is standing at attention. Nothing appears to be outwardly wrong but something in the air just feels off in a way she can’t really explain. Cyn meows curiously as her owner stands stock still in the middle of the sidewalk, mind racing with possible plans of action.

Her feet pivot to quickly lead her and Cyn back the way they came. She knows that there is a dead end alley next to the house on the corner that’s closed in by the east facing wall of her own house. The only way out of the alley other than its entrance is the fire escape of the building that forms the right side. The building is several stories taller than her own home so climbing the fire escape will allow her to jump onto the roof of her house.

Cyn, who is known for making noise, has fallen silent as she feeds off of Laila’s changing energy. When Laila gently lowers the blinking ball of fur into the leather backpack she’d been carry, she doesn’t make a sound. After returning the backpack to its place on her back and adjusting the straps, Laila stealthily makes her way up the fire escape. She nimbly avoids the noisier steps in an attempt to draw as little attention to herself as possible.

Making the four foot leap from the ledge of the fire escape to her own roof is practically a no brainer. She surveys the small rooftop garden she’d painstakingly arranged for any sign of a disturbance. Her suspicious gaze notice a potted tree that is just slightly out of place. The sliver of concrete that’s a few shades darker from the dirt and lack of sun just barely peeks out from beneath the clay pot but her keen eyes notice it anyway. Someone has been up here.

The most obvious way into Laila’s townhome from the room is through the access door next to the potted tree. If there is truly someone waiting to ambush her like she’s beginning to think then the obvious way in is definitely not the way that she’ll be going. On the other side of the door is a staircase that ends in her laundry room. There’s space behind the staircase that would be a perfect place to lay in wait in order to take someone by surprise. Her eyes are trained on the heavy door in front of her as she mentally goes through her options.

She carefully darts across the concrete expanse of her roof, bypassing the door. She says a silent prayer that she doesn’t get her head blown off before peeking over the ledge to her bedroom balcony down below. Thankfully, the coast is clear. Four blocks of light are arranged on either end of the balcony. Whoever is in her house must have opened the blackout curtains to give themselves a view of the balcony. Laila carefully lowers herself down between the two windows right next to the fern she has sitting there. To the untrained eye, it looks like a real plant but it’s not. She quickly lifts the convincing fake out of the pot and grabs at the loaded gun she has hidden there. Laila grabs the silencer that she has stashed in the pot as well, screwing it into place. The heavy piece of metal feels more like an extension of her arm as she turns the safety off.

“Okay, Cyn. You stay here while mommy goes to work.” Laila whispers lovingly to her cat. She strokes her soft fur a few times before gently setting the backpack down next to the fern.

Laila peeks in through the uncovered window to see that her bedroom is currently empty. She tiptoes across the balcony so she can look through the other window which gives her a direct line of sight through her open bedroom door into the hallway beyond it. The coast appears to be clear. Seconds later she’s crouched low next to her raised bed, listening, feeling. She slows her breath down till she’s almost not breathing at all. That’s when she hears it. The light tapping of someone slowly climbing her wooden stairs. She rolls beneath her bed and thanks her lucky stars for giving her the foresight to choose a bed set that reached the floor.

“Come out, come out wherever you are. I just want to play.” The raspy, disjointed Korean that probably sends chills down a normal person’s spine only serves to piss Laila off. She lets go of her gun and uses the sound of his voice to cover up the noise of her unstrapping the katana blade from the bed frame above her head.

Her uncle had called her stupid for stashing her mother’s treasured swords in such an odd place but as she hears the satisfying sound of the metal slicing through the air towards her would be assailant’s calf muscles she knows she made the right decision. His screech sends shockwaves for adrenaline rocketing through her body as Laila escapes her hiding place. She stands to see a young man probably around the age of 25 desperately trying to stem the bleeding from the arteries she just severed.

“Play time is over, bitch.” She spits out through teeth gritted in anger. The low pop of her weapon firing ends him seconds before the bleeding can.

The sight of their apartment complex looming in the distance makes Seokjin’s heart beat a little faster. Sleeping in hotel beds is something that he’s gotten used to out of necessity but his dozing is never as fulfilling as it is when he does it in his own bed.

Yoongi is the first one to the door. He quickly enters the passcode, flinging the door open wide. The rest of them follow behind him, slamming the door and nearly cause a pile up when the Daegu rapper suddenly stops short after flicking on the light.

“Yo what the fuck? You’re blocking-” Yoongi silences Jimin with a single raised hand.

“Someone’s been in here.” All of them are on high alert now. They always joke about Yoongi’s “sixth sense” but when Yoongi has a gut feeling about something he’s usually right so they’ve learned to trust it.

“Well done, Min Yoongi.” Jungkook and Seokjin make eye contact over Jimin’s head at the sound of the familiar voice from somewhere inside their dorm.

Their surprise guest doesn’t wait long to show their face as Laila steps out from a dark hallway off to the right dressed in black from head to toe. Jungkook thinks she looks like a much hotter Lara Croft but something tells him that now is not the time to mention that. Her lips are curved into a delicate smile but her eyes dark pits of murderous rage. Rage that she intends to act on if the handgun leveled in their general direction is anything to go on.

Jimin sizes her up and takes a half step in her direction but Seokjin stops him. Jimin is quick but Seokjin has already learned his lesson where Laila is concerned. She is not to be underestimated. “What are you doing here, Laila?”

“You don’t get to ask questions, Jin.” She sneers, spitting his name out like a curse. “I just wanted to be left alone and instead you put a fucking price on my head? Men really are the weaker species because that was stupid as hell.”

If Seokjin was confused before he’s even more confused now. What in the world would make her think that he was the one to put a hit out on her? He looks around the room and his eyes land on Hoseok who looks like he’d rather be anywhere but here. He has that sheepish look on his face that he always does when he’s done something that he knows he shouldn’t. That tells Seokjin everything he needs to know. He’s overcome with the urge to rip Hoseok several new assholes but right now he has bigger fish to fry.

Laila’s observant eyes don’t miss the way Seokjin’s face morphs from confusion to realization. “Oh, so you didn’t know? Tsk tsk I smell mutiny on the horizon.”

“Why don’t you put the gun down so we can talk about this?” Jin reasons. The small laugh that bubbles up past her lips sends a shiver down his spine. It’s so cold and evil.

“The time for talking is long gone.” She starts, “I did all the talking I was going to do when I told you to leave me the fuck alone. This life took away the only family I had in this world and outside of punishing the people responsible I want nothing to do with it.”

Seven sets of eyes grow wide as her voice cracks with emotion. It’s painfully obvious that Laila is still mourning the loss of her parents all these years later. She seems to almost forget herself as she wipes at her wet cheeks with the hand that still clings to her weapon. Jungkook is overcome with the urge to hold her close but he knows she’d put a bullet between his eyes the second he takes a step in her direction.

Jimin moves once more to disarm her now that she’s distracted. Once again, he’s restrained as Seokjin latches onto the back of his shirt. He makes eye contact with Yoongi, who has yet to speak since this entire fiasco began, indicating that it’s time for him to spill the beans on the little project he’d been assigned.

Yoongi clears his throat which seems to bring Laila back to the present as she trains her gun on him. “What if I told you that I know who had your parents killed?”

“You’re lying to me.” Laila accuses vehemently. There’s no way that Yoongi has done in a few weeks what she’s failed to do in years.

“Choi Minseok. That name ring a bell?” Yoongi responds.

“Stop lying to me.” Laila bites out. Her voice rises in anger. “Why would he do that? He was my mom’s second in command.”

Saying the words out loud seems to trigger something in her mind. She repeats the phrase softly to herself a few times, working through whatever thought process has just occurred to her.

“You can prove it was him?” Yoongi nods to the affirmative.

“If you work with us, we’ll help you take him down.” The air is tense as Laila considers the new offer Seokjin has just made.

“I’m in.” Much to the relief of everyone in the room, Laila lowers her weapon and tucks it into the holster strapped to her thigh. Jungkook claps in ill-concealed glee at what this means.

“I just want to make it known that I don’t like this.” Hoseok pipes up over the noise of everyone else voicing their opinions on what just happened.

“And I just want to make it known that you owe me new carpeting in my bedroom. I had to rip it up to get rid of that amateur you sent to kill me. I’ll be sending you the bill.” With that, she pivots on her heel to follow Yoongi down the hallway to his lab.

Laila situates herself on the leather couch Yoongi has situated along one wall as she waits for him to get his system booted up. Taehyung and Jungkook are quick to sandwich her between the two of them, firing off questions rapid fire about how she thwarted Hoseok’s hired gun. The aforementioned rapper has perched himself on a stool in the corner to sulk. Surprisingly, Laila finds herself at ease despite the events that have lead to her being in this room. Something about the aura of these men makes her feel truly relaxed for the first time in years.

“A sword?!” Laila can’t help but chuckle at the way the three youngest members collectively make the same face of disbelief at her story. Jimin reaches around Taehyung from his spot on the arm of the couch to close the younger man’s gaping mouth. Something about flies getting in and onion breath. Laila opens her mouth to continue her storytelling when Yoongi interrupts.

“If you’re all done with story time, I have some things to say.” Yoongi declares, swiveling around to face his impressive bank of monitors once more.

Various pictures and documents appear across the screen as Yoongi’s agile fingers fly across the keyboard. According to a three-message email chain from September 1997, Minseok had grown power hungry in his new position at the top. He didn’t believe that Cobra was cut out for the domestic life and would eventually return to reclaim her throne. Now that he’d had a taste of true power he was unwilling to give it up.

She Gave You The Opening, Dumbass. (bodyguard!D. Weekes x Reader)

Request: Dallon from Bodyguard, Not My Owner x reader because I have no self-control.

Dallon’s eyes were wide, focused on the lit-up monitor he was hovering in front of. His fingers worked along the keyboard instinctively, going through the motions that they had done a million times before.

To the left of his hands was a micro-chipped flash drive, which he hurriedly gripped and inserted into the PC as soon as he had successfully bypassed its security system.

At the precise moment that he did so, you popped your head through the IT centre’s doorway. Your hair was swept across your face in a way that was not at all charming, and your breathing was slightly shallow, indicating to Dallon that you had been involved in battle with the enemy’s henchman ever since the two of you split up ten minutes ago.

“Hey, boy wonder,” you called out to him as you delivered a kick to the gut of another assailant who hurled himself towards you; exhaling shortly, you turned to look at your colleague once again, “could you hurry it up? Kinda outnumbered here.”

At your request, Dallon’s internal functions rejuvenated instantaneously; the thought of you potentially getting hurt summoned a fiery intensity inside of the techie, and he began working at an insanely fast pace.

“Almost there, (Y/N),” he answered, glancing over at you; his chest tightened when you locked eye contact but he tried his hardest to ignore it, and turned back to the screen as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, “I just need two minutes.”

“I can give you forty-five seconds.”

“I’ll take it,” he breathed, grabbing a nearby swivel chair and seating himself on it as he hunched himself over and leaned forward so far he was practically inside of the computer, entering full-on techie-mode.

Meanwhile, you continued fighting with the hoard of enemies outside, trying to keep them away from Dallon so that he could work his magic and hack their systems. You were doing a damn good job at it too – especially considering that you were alone against seven of them – but you were also starting to grow weaker.

You’d been at it non-stop for almost fifteen minutes with no time to take a breather, and your strikes were beginning to lose potency. This, unfortunately, gave your enemies an edge, and they wasted no time in capitalising on it, with one of them delivering a stunning kick to your midsection, propelling you backwards through the doorway and into the IT centre.

You landed a few feet away from Dallon with a loud thud and a groan of pain, and the techie’s attention was immediately stolen from the monitor and set on you completely. His heart race picked up and his face became panicked as he stopped hacking for a moment and started reaching for you.

“Oh, my god. (Y/N), are you okay? Do you need-“

“I’m fine,” you hissed through clenched teeth, shooing his hands away and pushing yourself up, “Just get it done, Weekes!”

With a hasty nod and only minimal reluctance, Dallon refocused on the monitor, as you picked yourself up and resumed fighting. They had made their way inside the centre, now, and you had to put in two hundred percent effort to make sure that your colleague was not in harm’s way.

Mumbling to himself, Dallon skimmed over the programme he had created when its window appeared on the screen as fast as he could with desperate urgency. He could hear your faint grunts of discomfort sounding throughout the room, and his heart tugged with each sound. He hated it. Hated you being hurt. And so he rushed.

After doing one last check to ensure that all of the coding was correct before typing in the passcode and activating the virus.

“Okay!” he yelled out when he was done, yanking the drive from the PC and throwing up his hands. “It’s done! (Y/N), I’m-“

Dallon froze in place after he turned and was presented with the barrel-end of a revolver, aimed right at his head. He saw the slight movement of the assailant’s finger on the trigger and in that moment, he knew that his life was about to come to an end.

So, he shut his eyes and a second later, a gunshot echoed off of the walls.

But instead of feeling a bullet hit his head, he felt a soft hand cup his cheek tenderly. Confused, he opened his eyes and (after tilting his head down) looked right into yours.

“Hey, you’re okay,” you soothed, giving him a small smile as you brushed your thumb against his cheek.

It was clear that he was – or had been – terrified. There was a slight tremor in his body, and his usually sparkling eyes were dull with dread. You kept your hand on his face, non-verbally willing him to calm down, and eventually he was able to function normally and start to move.

He followed your lead out of the facility, but did so as if in a daze. He looked at all of the unconscious bodies on the floor, and he couldn’t help but think that if it weren’t for you, he’d have been worse off.

And suddenly, that little crush that he’d had on you for the last two years evolved into something much, much deeper.

“(Y/N)! Hey!”

Looking up from the mission folder in your hand, you stopped and turned around to see who had called for you. It was Dallon, and he was jogging down the corridor to catch up with you. His fluffy hair bounced each time his feet would hit the ground, and you couldn’t help but smile at the sight.

“Hey, cutie,” you smiled, tucking the folder under your arm, “What’s up?”

Your nickname caused the techie’s cheeks to flush and he tried to hide it as best he could as he opened his mouth to speak.

“I, uh, I just wanted to say thank you for yesterday,” he said earnestly, pushing his glasses back, “You… you saved my life.”

“You don’t have to thank me, Dallon. You know I always have your back,” you said gently, giving another small smile, which he returned.

“And I always have yours. When it comes to tech stuff, at least. Well, and normal stuff, I guess. I mean, obviously not in, like, mission stuff ‘cause I’m useless in the field. But, like, if you need someone to drive you to the doctor or-“

He shut his mouth when you placed a finger on his lips.

“What did we say about babbling?” you queried, cocking one brow.

“That it’s only cute for the first five seconds,” he mumbled against your finger, internally freaking out over the sensation.

“Mhm,” you nodded and darted your tongue across your bottom lip before continuing, “And I’m pretty sure you can think of better things to do with your lips, no?”

Dallon was properly freaking out at this point, and struggling tremendously to maintain a neutral expression. A million possibilities of what his next move would be were racing through his mind. Unfortunately, though, he decided to go with the wrong one.

“Oh, like drinking coffee?” he piped, hastily taking your hand and removing it from his lips, “Haha, yeah! You’re right; that’s a great idea. I think I’ll go do that now. Yeah. Okay, bye!”

“So you think I shoulda kissed her?”

“For someone who’s supposedly a genius, you’re a fucking idiot,” Brendon answered in an icy tone, leaning against one of the desks with his arms folded over his chest.

“Is that a yes?”

With a sigh and an eye roll, Brendon straightened himself up and crossed over to his desolate friend, who had extended his body over the desk chair and was moving around aimlessly.

When he was close enough, the agent clamped both of his hands on the techie’s shoulders and leaned down.

“Sí. Oui. Ja. Sim. Ken. Yes,” he spoke, “She gave you the opening, dumbass.”

With a groan, Dallon facepalmed with both hands. “Oh, my gooood. She did, didn’t she?”

“Literally just said that.”

Turning sharply, Dallon looked up at his friend with a desperate expression. “So now what do I do?”

“Go get her,” Brendon answered, patting Dallon once on the back before turning and heading for the door, “Before Ambrose does.”

The world is bigger than it seems, but most of it is forbidden. Every block you walk has buildings and spaces kept special and reserved. Houses. Cars. Apartments. Mailboxes. So much space is locked up, available only to special people.

You aim to be as special as possible. You seek to open the world back up, but only for you.

The secret to that power is keys. Bits of metal and plastic that make us who we are. In the modern world, humans are a collection of possessions, and the world is divided up into fiefdoms of who can own what.

The more keys you get, the closer you are to becoming the ruler of all dominion.

Generate a Minor Charge: Get a key or passcard to some new restricted area or object. This could be a set of car keys, an apartment or office key, or even a lockbox key if something worthwhile is in the lockbox. It doesn’t matter if you got the key legitimately or not, and you don’t even have to use it. The key must be a physical object that lets you bypass physical barriers – passcodes and backstage passes won’t work. Getting new copies of keys you already has won’t earn new charges, either.

Generate a Significant Charge: Acquire a key to a coveted location. This has to be a place or thing that’s well-protected, valuable, and specifically desired by more than a dozen people.

Generate a Major Charge: Cleidomancers cannot gain major charges.

Generate a Major Charge mod by Anon: Acquire a key to, and be seen as the legitimate owner of, something that could directly affect at least five million people (The White House or a nuclear missile silo might work) OR acquire the keys to the homes of everybody in a neighborhood of at least five thousand people.

Taboo: Give away any key. Physical possession is what counts here. You can’t lend out a key, leave a key out of your arm’s reach of your keys, or let someone else touch a key. You can’t even return a key you borrowed from someone else.

Also, you must treat all keys with reverence. Keeping them on a chain is fine, but using a key to open a package, insulting a key, or allowing any a key to be damaged breaks taboo.

Random Magic: Access and identity.

Symbolic Tension: Keys are external possessions, but they convey a social status of identity and membership.

Blast: The Cleidomancy blast opens up a hole in the target. This blast also works equally well on objects.

Charging Tips: You can probably get a charge or two every week, by renting storage space, requesting access to work areas, and so on. Janitors, postal carriers and facility managers can get a lot more – a charge a day is pretty likely. Jail and bank guards could probably get a significant charge every month or two.

Starting Charges: 4 minor

Minor formulas

Let’s Get Past This 1 minor charge The most obvious Cleidomancy formula. You can open any kind of door or lock.

Swordfish 2 minor charges Successfully guess any password. If there’s a single word (or combination of characters) that’ll get you what you want, you’ll say it. If you’re at a keyboard, you’ll type it too. This is usually a password, but it can be used for other situations. For instance, if someone asks “Who sent you?” looking for a good reference, you might blurt out a trusted contact’s name, like “Eponymous!” though you won’t know anything more than what you’ve just said. If the required response is more than one word (or involves any spaces, for a written password) you won’t say a thing and your charges are wasted.
