Oh, the new Quarantine patch added everything I asked for on the feedback form! New HUD that's a little easier to read and uses a brighter blue for the Depression meter, trash can animation, and most importantly (imo) the ability to set Russian VA/English subtitles!

What I love about the opening of Pathologic 2 is how it prepares you. It literally says to you, the player, your first playthrough is going to be a disaster, don't even try, you're completely unprepared for what is to come and everything you do will go wrong. And you're made to walk through the worst possible version of events so that you see it looming by Day 6, 7, whatever day you're at your lowest point. The game is designed for you to give up and start over, accept that the first try will be a failure. Mr Immortell is telling us that it's the second attempt where the game really starts
#and he's right!#that first playthrough is like an extended tutorial#i'm sure some players made it out okay on the first try but it doesn't seem like it was designed with that outcome in mind#pathologic#pathologic 2

Added a guide to ripping usable P1 models to the PMW... this has become somewhat less convenient recently because it's hard to find the free version of NinjaRipper, but still doable. :-)

Is the video game really subverting its genre? Are you sure it's not just doing clever things within its genre, because otherwise the game would be boring and unchallenging and say nothing interesting? I'm just saying, it's cool and all that the internet allows horror game fandoms to overflow into eachother, but not EVERY 2 hour video essay needs to be spent breathlessly sucking off the devs. Sometimes a game is just REGULAR difficult and REGULAR high-quality.
Besides RPGs made over a decade ago, what is the thing supposedly subverting? Clearly not other contemporary indie horror games, because there is clearly a convergent ethos forming of cosmic horror and beginners' traps; that's just what the genre looks like nowadays.
#pathologic#fear and hunger#inscryption#in general I just hate overly reverent video essays; you guys ruined Airbender for me#this is NOT me hating on Pathologic!#Icepick is a good studio; their story is interesting their characters are well written#introducing needs decay mechanics into a first-person adventure game is a good idea; I just wouldn't call it “subversive”#this IS me hating a little bit on Patho fans just because I think hyperbole about the game's difficulty is tedious#and distracts from an equally valid conversation about what you get if you approach the game like a sandbox#I get it the algorithm incentivizes youtubers to talk about every new game like it's a complete departure from what came before#but if everything is special nothing is#and i swear if one more person tries to read me HP Lovecraft's wikipedia page like i was born yesterday im going to scream#Just saying; if fucking with the player's expectations is all it takes to be “subversive” then Stick of Truth is “subverting its genre”#except... no... Stick of Truth is a bog standard RPG just with a quirky tutorial#and creative integration of its off-beat story and mechanics RIGHT??#my point is Patho and F&H aren't actually much different; they still play like RPGs still handle like RPGs#the fact that you die more than you would in COD or Skyrim or whatever doesn't make it the “anti-RPG”#anymore than Seinfeld was the “anti-sitcom”#“subversiveness” is just a basic bitch way to analyze things; and I think “How does the art take ADVANTAGE of its genre?” is better#media criticism

Daniil why would you say that???
Watching Pathologic (classic HD) while on break from suffering in Pathologic 2, and it really struck me how different the first meeting with the Bachelor was in each game.
Pathologic 1, well, only a screenshot can do it justice,
(Yes . . . far be it from me to call myself a person of mystical inclinations. However, when I look at you, I get the feeling that nature is playing jokes on us. It is as if both the left and right hand have clutched the head to realize for the first time they are two parts of a single whole.
>Why?
>I get that feeling too. Does that mean that we are alike?)
That's like the first thing he says to the Haruspex, and while yeah everybody in Pathologic talks like that to a degree, even in game, in character that's a wild thing for Dankovsky specifically to say.
We just spent an entire playthrough as this guy mocking and/or having breakdowns over the existence of the supernatural - especially precognition. And in strolls this 6'2 resting murder-face dude with half-a-medical degree, widely thought to be a serial killer (kinda true), and Dankovsky's like,
"BTW, my heart is telling me we're kinda two halves of the same whole.😊❤️"
Absolutely hilarious. Even funnier is that the Haruspex, grumpy at baseline and currently having the worst day of his life (so far), can agree with him. Great first impression all around!
Then over in Pathologic 2, the Bachelor is high-key fumbling, like fumbling so hard you can get an achievement for it.
Carpetbagger - Remind a colleague of the Hippocratic Oath -- and fail
Not to meme on the guy (who is of course, multi-faceted and at his core deeply altruistic even if he often seems to have trouble expressing that on an individual basis), but initial Pathologic 2 Bachelorencounter is Daniel at his most prickly prick.
He gets Artemy's name wrong (possibly on purpose and definitely twice),
condescendingly demands the Haruspex be his errand boy,
basically calls himself the smartest person in a room of 2,
and can accidentally imply that he left a couple of orphan children to die because he doesn't treat mutts (he actually refused to treat the orphans' dogs).
Yikes - no wonder Artmey spends the first couple of Days taking cheap shots at the guy.
I mean in both Haruspex routes eventually he ends up very friendly with the Bachelor, which makes senses on a thematic level given the some of the Haruspex's major themes/ideals are connection and community. You could say their first meeting was changed to be funnier ("Vorakh") or more in character for the expected tension between two people under a lot of stress who can both be difficult to get along with at baseline
However, what about if we look at it from a meta-narrative level?
While you can play Pathologic 1 as either the Bachelor or the Haruspex on your initial run, it's pretty common knowledge who you are supposed to play first.
"Daniil Danokovsky's Fun Steppe Vacation was just the tutorial for Artemy Burakh's Tormentous Nightmare" - HBomberguy in Pathologic is Genius and Here's Why
This means that the player in Pathologic 1 has already been introduced to Daniil - even if Artmey hasn't - and the game reflects that! You the player know the Bachelor, you've been him, and you probably got really attached after keeping him alive for 12 horrible, horrible days.
Even though you know he can be a bit sanctimonious and dismissive, the player knows he's rational and compassionate and thus already used the evidence at hand to figure out Artemy hasn't killed anybody!
Of course one of the first things you (the player) would want to do as the new protagonist is check on your former avatar, and the game rewards you for it! Talking with the Bachelor on Day 1 as Artemy can raise your reputation - which is super critical. It might be the increase that keeps you from getting hunted in the streets or starving as shops refuse to sell food. What a great first (Second?) impression!!
Daniil's unprompted "hey are we soulmates or is it just me?" line is funny, but meta-narratively it is also true. They are the player's first two avatars, taking turns being puppeted by the same you as protagonists through the same overall story to two opposing conclusions. They are (your) right and left hand. You've played Dankovsky, (you) know this and having previously been the protagonist this new Dankovsky seems to subliminally know this too.
Meanwhile over in Pathologic 2, the only route is the Haruspex - disregarding the Marble Nest (worst day of Dankovsky's life [so far, ad infintuum]) which has enough time fuckery going on that I shall disregard it for this analysis - you can only be Artemy Burakh.
Either under the assumption that the player of Pathologic 2 hasn't played Pathologic 1 or that they've played all of Pathologic 1 including Changeling' Route's extended murder hide and seek between Dankovsky and Burakh, We (the player and Artemy) don't know Daniil when we meet him in Pathologic 2 as anything but the broken man we saw in the depressing into.
Is he our friend this time? Is he our enemy? Whatever he is, he's certainly a sanctimonious prick.
(Today's tragedy won't be the last. I was blessed with a naturally high intelligence, and my observations indicate that a very deadly visitor has come to this god-forsaken town. That's all I can say for now.
>...I don't like you, Bachelor Whatever.)
In Pathologic 2, both the player and Artmey meet Daniil Dankovsky at at his worst, and slowly work-up from there because both of us are meeting, getting to know, and building a relationship with him for the first time.
This is actually parallel to how you first meet the Haruspex in Pathologic 1 as the Bachelor!
If you are playing in the intended order, both the player and Daniil don't know anything about Artmey besides the serial killer rumors, and likewise you meet him at his worst - (in prison and later he murders a young woman to get Daniil the infected heart he needs to try and develop a vaccine). Much like we see the worst of Daniil's classism, arrogance, and inability to connect beyond quid pro quo (hehe, latin) in our Patho2 intro; in Patho1 we initially only see Artemy's standoffishness, brutality, and stubbornness.
Interestingly, following Daniil's themes/ideals of transcendence and rationality we (the player and Daniil) don't actually end up connecting much with Artmey on the Bachelor's route. The player is influenced by the puppet, and why would Dr. Daniil Dankovsky - whose route is plagued by betrayal, manipulation, and the difficulty of connecting to even people who do selflessly care for him (like Eva) - make friends with a violent, possibly dangerous guy who practices a sort of medicine Dankovsky doesn't believe in?
(I couldn't find a good screenshot for this, but mentally insert a picture of Artemy doing a roadside dissection)
Basically if Daniil is the player's protagonist he won't reach out, because in-character why would he?
If Artemy is the player's protagonist, Daniil will try to be friends in Patho1 (because of the player's previous actions affecting both avatars) or in Patho2 Artmey will eventually connect with him because that's in-character for him.
Overall, I suppose this means that Danii's instant and uncharacteristic buddy-buddy attitude with Artemy on the Haruspex route Patho1 is completely justified from a meta-textually narrative, as is his horrific fumbling in Patho2.
And it is also very, very funny.
#Pathologic#Pathologic 2#daniil dankovsky#artemy burakh#TLDR: You (the player) are making your former favorite and current favorite doll bestest friends#No idea what any of this implies for the changeling's route#this isn't really a shipping post but u could take it that way#long post#pathologic spoilers

Tragedians are one of my favourite metanarrative aspects of Pathologic; the tutorials presented as the stagehands observing the production, commenting and advising! It's clever, but that's apropos for Pathologic anyway, I think 😉 These three are in my shop here if you'd like to take one home with you! Even if you can't nab one this time consider following my shop to see updates 💝

P3Q Datamining Roadblock: .anno files?
Hi everyone... I have been snooping through the files of P3Q and have found one roadblock in this kind of totally inadvisable quest that I'd like to drag other nerds into.
First of all, I'm using this mod of AssetStudio [the original one by perfare doesn't work for the Unity version that P3Q is made in, and even this new one shows some issues in the terminal... but at least everything loaded in.]
I'm also following this tutorial from the Pathologic Modding Wiki for changing assets.
Now... to the roadblock itself & some workarounds that haven't worked as of right now.
When you load in all of the files and sort by TextAsset, you'll get a lot of files whose containers end in .anno, and the contents are entirely unreadable.
They seem to be related to voiceovers in English and Russian, because the container path has voicover in it, and only ever mentions those languages.
I've tried bringing in the file into Notepad++ and changing the encoding, but nothing makes it more readable.
I've also looked up the file extension, and the closest I could find is this 20 year old page for a lipsyncing software. I've tried downloading the demo for it here [cue Silent Hill "My dick has led me to places I wouldn't go to with a gun" meme] and loading the .anno file in there, but it needs a .wav file to go along with it that I don't have. I've tried putting random .wav files in there and nothing happens.
[Love how creepy this application is though.]
So... that is my issue. I have no idea what these .anno files are and how to read them. I found one that was between Daniil, Andrey, and the Changeling, and it is driving me mad. I want the forbidden fruit.
Obviously I can and should wait for the full game, but I love roping people into my highly specific endeavors.
[My theory is that the 'text' in the file represents phonemes, which the game then uses to splice together animations for lip syncing. So, they might not even be readable... but... yes.]
In cooler news, I was snooping around the mesh files, and I think the P3Q Polyhedron uses the Exact same model as the P2 Polyhedron, but with some additional meshes and new textures.
[The additional parts I believe are called "Small_Part_##"]
I have to remember how I ripped buildings from P2 with all of their parts and props [I have the Polyhedron, along with Peter's whole damn house], but I think you have to go through the Scene Hierarchy tab + export as something besides OBJ.... I don't even remember.
Okay. Thanks everyone.

Hi there,
We continue to improve the prologue based on your feedback, and this time we focused on customization options and interface updates:
• HUD updated
• Map now correctly displays open and closed gates
• Added tutorials for HUD, health, mental metabolism, and Amalgam
• Added gamma settings
• Added separate language settings for voiceover and text (you can now listen to Daniil complain in his mother tongue while still reading everything)
• Added animation for kicking trash bins (yes, it’s a thing)
• Fixed bug with body display in inspection
• Fixed mouse and gamepad stick sensitivity
• Fixed issue with "double" button presses
• Fixed gamepad hint, added quick slot switching
• Fixed gamepad icons in the mindmap
• Fixed various graphical bugs
Thank you for your feedback!
In the near future, we’ll be adding Chinese localization to Quarantine.
As the “mental metabolism” system and the way it influences resources is unique, we’re experimenting with UIs to communicate them. A new (and probably not the last) version will be available in the next patch.
Meanwhile, the core team is returning to development of the main game. Stay tuned for more updates!
Replacing burnt-out spotlights,
Ice-Pick Lodge

The Pathologic Modding Wiki is 1 year old!
Since 4/10/2023, the Pathologic Modding Wiki has grown to include:
* 110 article pages * 7 modding tutorials * 191 user-uploaded files * 3,224 total wiki edits
Thanks to everyone who's visited, shared, or contributed so far! I'm thrilled with the wiki's progress and excited for the next year (hopefully, we can fill in those last red links on the homepage).
To celebrate, I've written my most in-depth tutorial yet: Adding items to Pathologic. If you're interested in learning to mod P1, items are a great introduction to the game's functionality! The guide will walk you through implementing a delicious burger with onion, and installing it in grocery stores / trash cans. :-)
#pmw#pathologic#now that it's spring I have more time to work on pages - setting a goal of 1 article per week for the coming year :-)

I had a dream about Pathologic so I decided to gird myself and start playing (this is my third playthrough: I'd done the tutorial and then skulked off to see Grief, and was intimidated about going in again). Promptly got beaten up the worst that I ever have on Day 1.
11/10 I love this game.

how do you make your zines? a friend of mine has taken an interest in zine making and also likes pathology like i do, so im trying to convince her to draw a rubin fanzine, however i have no actual idea on how it works. I've bought both of your little zines and they seem so perfect... how do you do it?
first of all Thank You For Buy (sic) overjoyed to hear you're #enjoying them. now ok so ☝ i'm going to go with the peterstakh zine template because for the oneirotects one i had to do some annoying shit. lowkey it's very simple to do you just gotta have an idea for it otherwise the template is easy as shit.
take your lowest-value paper you have (this will be a blank template you can refer to)
fold and cut according to this tutorial ("classic" variant) (<- HA! like the video g) (but tbf you can use the other variants shown, i just haven't used them myself)
mark on this template the cover, back cover, and pages, as well as up side and down side so you can refer to it and also know how to orient your page when you work on the real thing
^ reiterate steps 1 and 2 with a new piece of paper (better quality/possibly thicker depending on what medium you'll be using)
do your zine. it's gotta be done sorry i can't help you with this. for the peterstakh one i really liked the idea of a "wrap-around" cover (if you have it you know what i mean), for the oneirotects one the concept of a page-by-page slow unfolding and then the double page that jumps at you (scary). you can color you can glue you can do whatever at this point it's just you.
^ you can stop here for the zine will be done. if you wish to distribute or sell it (and it's like 2D/no stuff glued or protruding) :
scan it 300dpi minimum (you might have to resize the file later on)
clean up + eventually color manipulations for a cleaner printing
fight for your life over multiple tries on low value paper of trying to find the right printing settings that make the best printed zine
once you have it down, print on a paper thick enough to withstand being shipped/handled (i don't remember exact weight of mine, i think it's a 120g/m² ? or 130g/m² maybe)
back to foldin & cuttin
voilà 👍 frankly the like. formal (as in =/= content) parts of the zine are so so simple. the template is very easy very accessible. it's what you wanna make of it that distinguishes it... and for this i cannae help you
