Thoughts on grading and size inclusive patterns: Lately I feel overwhelmed by pattern writing and the admin work that has to be done behind the scenes. 💻 I am still grading the Reyna Sweater - the red one with the lace neckline pictured above. #reynaSweater 'Grading' is the process of creating several sizes for a garment. 🧶 If you have been following this space for a while, you know that I offer all my sweater patterns in at least 10 sizes. Creating size inclusive patterns has always been important to me. But this time I would like to include even more sizes - not sure how many I can manage though yet. #sizeinclusive What most people don't know is that the very small sizes and the very large sizes take significantly more time to grade than the sizes in between. It is not like we can grade each size in the same amount of time over all sizes of the size range. At least not if you are doing it properly and with the intention of creating a garment that really fits. If I would only offer half the sizes I usually offer, I would probably only need a quarter of the time I usually need - or even less. This is why I totally understand if small indie designers choose to offer less sizes. Especially as most of us don't make any profit from selling patterns. Still, it is important to me that everyone is able to knit from my patterns. Even if it means that I need to spend more time on the pattern and have to have a lot of patience. Everyone should be able to find knitting patterns for their size. 💕 So, please bear with me. I love old sewing books, sometimes even more than the updated versions. I got this used copy of "Grading Techniques for Modern Design" by Jeanne Price and Bernard Zamkoff years ago and find it really helpful to understand how a pattern “grows.” There are illustrations in the book showing how the pattern is divided for grading (swipe to see photo). It really helps my visual brain to understand the process better. I find myself continuing to reference this book every time I grade a new pattern, even now that I grade my patterns digitally.  Definitely check it out if you can get your hands on a copy. ❤️ P.S. Yesterday I shared some swatches that I made over the past few days in my stories. I had a really hard time to decide what my next project would be even though I was aching to cast on something new. So that kept me thinking... Why was is sooo hard to decide that I could not make up my mind for days? 🤔 I thought about that a lot and came to the conclusion that I might have put too much pressure on myself lately. I really want to create beautiful new designs for you. Designing is what I love! But sometimes I feel I cannot live up to my expectations. This might have something to do with my #boughsOfHollySweater 🧶 I have been trying to grade it for so long now, but I am still not done with it. Grading the sleeves for the larger sizes is just a nightmare, because there are so little rounds where I can place the decreases. Long story short, yesterday I decided that I needed a mindless project right now. Something that I would love to knit, that would be easy and work up fast. Something with as little obstacles as possible. Something with no pressure attached. So, I finally casted on something new! Yay! 🥳 And I am so glad I did! This is going to be a cropped drop shoulder sweater and I am in love already. This is my first time working with Plötulopi and this yarn really is one of a kind! Can you believe that I got all that sweater out of ONE single plate of Plötulopi?! 😲 Amazing, right? And it knits up SO fast. I managed to knit all this in just 5 hours! Also the fabric is so squishy, the color is just stunning and then there is this awesome sheepy smell! 😍 I am so glad that I have casted this one on! I really needed to feel the knitting joy that I am feeling right now. Sometimes it is the simplest Stockinette project that I will enjoy the most.
