ok.... still not happy with my experiments BUT what I am happy about is THIS AMAZING FIC SERIES CALLED "HOW FAMILIAR THE DANGER" BY @peachblossom-odyssey AND ITS LATEST CHAPTER AND HOW COULD I NOT MAKE SOMETHING FOR IT.

I’m back with more how familiar the danger art <33 once again if you haven’t read this au series (by @peachblossom-odyssey), you totally should. it’s an absolute delight. this is a scene from the latest installment, the spider that held a star! since it’s raining basically the whole time I decided to work just in blue, and I think it turned out pretty well!! (though drawing ambrosius in blue was a bit of a crazy time fjdkjdngkg)

11: Link your three favorite fics right now

This is so hard. There are so many good fanfics out there.

I will always love @sercezgazety's/theprincessofdenial's A Potter's Field. It was written before For the Future aired, and is a darker look at how post-Belos life and political restructuring/lustration could look like, particularly for the former Golden Guard. I appreciate how the story is also told/supplemented through other media (like archaeological field notes), and the whole fic matches my academic interests pretty closely (studied anthro, politics, Eastern Europe, democratization, etc. once upon a time). Full disclosure: I did beta read it and was generally a chapter or two ahead of other readers, so that made the comment section even more fun. In general, I highly recommend the comment section of all theprincessofdenial's fics in addition to the fics themselves.

After a long stretch of being most interested in genfic (especially in the TOH fandom), Nimona has gotten me into shippy stuff again. I'm enjoying @peachblossom-odyssey's/LiterallyThePresident's how familiar the danger series because it's an interesting concept for an AU (Ballister doesn't become a knight), the universe is dark/gritty, and all the Ballister/Ambrosius interactions are fire.

I also really like @thegrimshapeofyoursmile's Strange Infatuations series since I am a sucker for worldbuilding, especially worldbuilding based on research.

45: Do you want to break your readers‘ heart or make them laugh?

Both? One of my favorite books - Under the Whispering Door - made me cry actual tears and laugh out loud, so that kind of emotional rollercoaster is something I aspire to.

A good chunk of my writing falls into bittersweet, but even my "funny" fics like World's Best Turkey Carver and LuluRoe include nods at grief. My most angsty fics tend to be short and follow canon closely - I haven't invented much new angst for the blorbos.

I'm a little proud that I get this kind of range of comments across my fics (yes, I re-read comments as a pick-me-up and cherish each and every one):

"I don't know if i should laugh or cry ahdjshjd"

"Thank you for making me look like an idiot in front of my roommate! I laughed way too hard at that part."

"Aaaaahhh this hurt. This hurt me. Akkskssmzndkdk"

"This gave me such a quiet, sweet little heartache."

70: When asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

It wasn't until after I posted my third TOH fic that I confessed to my long-term partner that I was writing again and shared my AO3 username. There's just something about writing that exposes a bit of your soul, and having my writing connected to me as a person can feel mortifying.

I have mentioned to a few people that I write fanfic without linking to my work, and that's been easier (sometimes to friends/acquaintances who are also in fandom spaces, sometimes to my real life professional writer friends/acquaintances in a "I am but a humble amateur but still can relate somewhat to your writing vent post/your messed up Google algorithm" sort of way).

Basically, I don't consider amateur writing (fanfic or otherwise) embarrassing, but am more personally shy about sharing what I write with people who know me in real life.

Hi there! Sorry to bother you, what’s the show you reblog about with the dude with white hair and the lady? It’s a cdrama, I know that much, but what’s it about? long story short: it’s a love story that spans “three lives” between the most ancient (and arguably the most powerful) god, donghua dijun, and the queen of the fox spirit tribe, feng jiu. 

he’s aloof, high and mighty, and gives zero fucks. 

she’s adorable, sometimes is a Zero Braincell Baby, but is also badass and takes no shit.

would i rec this? YES. god dongfeng already made me cry in ten miles as the side pairing, but in this one, DAMN. like she loves him so much, but 20 odd eps in, and donghua still had no idea that feng jiu even existed, so it was all just. PAIN. but once he noticed her, and ohmygod he did, the dongfeng interactions have been *chef’s kiss*

also the mortal arc wasn’t 100% my thing (low-key preferred the one in ten miles), but LOOK AT THIS BS HOW SOFT

and the hand-holding in last week’s eps (the gifset you were referring to)? oh god i can’t BELIEVE we got that, when will i get over that, when will i stop LOSING MY SHIT OVER THEM 

(probably not so soon)

but yeah. 10/10 would rec pillow book.

My comments:  In which Wei Wuxian dresses himself as Jiang Cheng’s never-before-seen-distant-cousin Jiang Fenghua in order to go to the New Year festival.  He meets a gang of dancers, ruins his reputation, has a fantastic time as a quite pretty girl (if he does say so himself) and of course instantly catches Lan Wangji’s eye.

This is hilarious.

Summary:  Wei Wuxian never would have believed he was a cut-sleeve until he met a man as good as Lan Wangji. Lan Wangji was one of the best men Wei Wuxian has ever known; always going where there was chaos, helping those in need, being virtuous, righteous, and always the most beautiful man in Wei Wuxian’s eye. He knew he was blessed to have a husband as wonderful as Hanguang-Jun, who spoiled him with affection anytime Wei Wuxian whined for it.

Wei Wuxian wasn’t the jealous type. Even when others tended to overlook him, their attention focusing on his gorgeous Hanguang-Jun, trying to get him for themselves, Wei Wuxian never felt jealous. Lan Wangji’s constant attention and adoration for him made him feel secure and loved, never doubting their dedication to each other. It irritated him when people ignored their relationship, solely based on them both being men, and treated Lan Wangji like he was still an available bachelor, but no, Wei Wuxian wasn’t jealous. He only hoped that he managed to show his husband just how much he loved him in return. Anyone with eyes could see that they were together, they were perfect for one another. They all could see that Wei Wuxian loved Lan Wangji just as much as the other. Right?

My comments:  So much angst!  This is the one where our boys travel to a distant cultivation sect made up of all women who develop their cultivation through touch and sex… and who are also homophobic and don’t recognize that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are a couple. Wei Wuxian gets so jealous and insecure and angry.

The author’s note says: Anytime I read fics, it was always LWJ was the jealous one, wanting WWXs attention for himself. But you can’t tell me WWX wouldn’t be just as jealous and possessive. WWX is in a new body, smaller and weaker than the one he spent years working on and making strong. He’s a self conscious boy who thinks he doesn’t deserve the best even when the best loves him so unconditionally. He feels guilt for things he shouldn’t feel guilty for and he just wants everyone to be happy, even if he’s not in the picture. But LWJ loves him so much. They are each other’s happiness. And damn. That’s love bby

My comments:  Ha, all Lan WangJi’s POV, and he’s truly mystified about why Jin ZiXuan keeps using him as an intermediary, then as a friend (he writes letters!).  Quick overview of the years (not as disastrous as canon) as Lan Zhan keeps company with Wei Ying as much as he can get away with, and neither Wei Ying nor Jin ZiXuan ever figures out who is that person Lan Zhan once accidentally admitted to loving…

When they traveled they held hands. 

There were a lot of reasons behind it.Wandering the vast wastes of the Highlands, the broken streets of Edinburgh. Navigating the misty rivers and narrow valleys. The connection meant they would be anchored. They would have comfort in this frightening new world. The sky watched their progress. Always together. Always holding hands. 

But Jon also held Martin’s hand so that he wouldn’t lose him to the sudden fogs and empty streets. He’d squeeze reassuringly reminding Martin that he was not alone in the world. He was never alone. 

And Martin’s hand would tighten on the occasion they would come across survivors. Jon could read their stories on their faces. Knew it would only take a word and Martin knew he didn’t want that. Reminded Jon that he was here. That Jon wasn’t a monster. 

Together they would turn away from humanity and dread entities. They couldn’t belong to either so they belonged to each other.

The first thing Sterling notices is how much his head hurts. 

It’s dark, wherever he is, and he doesn’t know how he got there. 

And then he does.

He remembers Fina falling again and Betty falling apart and Velune losing themself trying to save them both. 

He remembers trying to protect each of them and failing them, failing them each time, however much he did.

And he remembers Meltyre by his side, slowly losing any light behind his smile. 

Sterling had desperately tried to protect him, too, but how could he protect him from losses that were Sterling’s own fault? 

It’s when the door opens that Sterling realizes he’s been crying. 

“Sterling?” Meltyre asks, his voice hollow in a way Sterling remembers fading in over time. 

“M–Meltyre,” Sterling manages.

“Why are you crying?” Meltyre kneels next to him. 

“Th–The others, and you.” Sterling reaches for him, but stops short, something in him feeling like he doesn’t deserve that comfort. “I’ve failed all of you.”

“Oh,” Meltyre says quietly.

“Everything hurts, Meltyre. Being with you is the only good thing in the world anymore. And I– I swear, I’ll never let anything happen to you.”

“Anything more.”

Sterling freezes. “Sorry?”

“Well, it’s just– a lot’s happened to me already, Sterling.”

(If he was thinking straight, Sterling might’ve seen something off in Meltyre’s eyes, in what he was saying. But he isn’t, and he doesn’t.)

“O–oh.”

“It’s like you said. But that’s okay, you won’t have to worry about it for much longer.”

“What do you mean?”

“My sisters need me, and there’s nothing for me here. I was gonna leave in the morning–”

“Oh. Right, you should be with–”

“–but I think I’ll leave now.” He stands.

“Wait, Meltyre–”

Meltyre doesn’t even say goodbye. 

The door closes behind him.

He’s right, Sterling thinks. Staying with him will only cause Meltyre pain, and he’s had enough of that for life. 

Sterling’s always been temporary.

He’s not sure how long he sits in the darkness, letting himself accept this. It’s quiet. He’s not sure when he stopped crying, only that he did.

The door opens.

“Uh… Sterling?” Meltyre asks, tentative.

Sterling can’t understand why he’s back. “Leave me alone.” He doesn’t even look up. “I’ve failed you.”
