"Only, in the aesthetics of the modern times, the beautiful and the sublime become separated. The beautiful is isolated in its pure positivity. The subject of modern times, which becomes stronger, turns the beautiful into a positive object of pleasure. In this context, the beautiful is juxtaposed to the sublime, which—due to its negativity—does not cause immediate pleasure. The negativity of the sublime, which distinguishes it from the beautiful, is turned into something positive again when its derived from human reason. At that point, it is no longer the outside, no longer the wholly other, but a form of inner expression of the subject.
In Pseudo-Longinus, who wrote the treatise On the Sublime (peri hypsous), the beautiful and the sublime are not yet distinguished. Thus, part of the beautiful is the negativity of the overwhelming. The beautiful by far exceeds the pleasurable.
Beautiful women, according to Pseudo-Longinus, are 'tortures to the eyes'. Thus, they are painfully beautiful. Shocking and sublime beauty are not a contradiction. The negativity of pain deepens beauty."
Byung-Chul Han, Saving Beauty (trans. Daniel Steuer)
Funnily enough, the criticism of "why did Xander put Hans in jail but keep Peri as his vassal" is based off a mistranslation lol; Xander only warns Corrin that Hans was a convicted criminal and to watch out for him just in case he falls back into old habits in JP, and Treehouse created the "i arrested him personally" line, presumably to try and make him more "heroic" or something.
Ah, I knew there was some lolcalisation at play regarding this scene, but never got the answer lol
If this was supposed to make him look more heroic... it backfired lol
I am also adding a Google Form to submit characters for an enby bracket so Limstella, Kyza, and Bramimond don't get left out. These can be characters from any game as long as there is canon basis for them being nonbinary.
Extra notes under the cut
Characters who are excluded from voting:
Anyone who obviously both looks and acts like a literal child. Some characters are borderline so discretion may be used
Generics
Anyone who lacks either a portrait or a unique name
Characters not in human form (e.g. Human!Anankos is included but Dragon!Anankos is not)
Characters who are technically included in Fates via Einherjar or Amiibo, but would fit better with another game's poll (e.g. Marth)
*Yes I know Nyx looks young, but considering she's canonically very old + her entire thing is that she actually acts her age even if she doesn't look it, I've decided to allow her
**Forrest canonically refers to himself as a man so he's going with the men
***Hana and Effie are not included because they are canonically supposed to be around the same age as Sakura and Elise respectively. Given the absolute oldest Sakura can possibly be is ~15 (and Elise is likely younger) it seemed fair to exclude them too.
While i like Peri more than most people, i do think her presence causes some issues with the story, mostly with Conquest.
The main reason Corrin (and, to a lesser extent, the Nohrian Royals) hates Hans and his section of the Nohrian Army is because he's a bloodthirsty psychopath who takes pleasure in killing innocent people for no other reason than because he can, to the point that the chapter where he kills Hans is the only chapter in all of Conquest where Corrin explicitly and happily admits that he's going to enjoy killing another human being.
It seems strange, then, that they would be perfectly fine working with Peri despite her doing the exact same things Hans did, down to killing innocent people for no other reason than personal pleasure in the act itself; while i can buy them being more lenient towards Peri for doing that, on account of her blatant mental issues and her genuinely not understanding that what she's doing is wrong, whereas Hans is clearly aware of the fact that his actions are frowned down upon in Nohrian society and seems relatively mentally stable, making him a hell of a lot morally worse than someone who doesn't even know that wanton murder is wrong, it still seems strange to me that they wouldn't at least pester Xander into doing something to fix Peri's attitude, since she claims multiple times that she's STILL killing people on a whim when she first joins, which seems odd for Corrin to ignore.
I think ultimately what it comes down to is that since the retainers in Fates are mostly just side characters whom don't impact the plot directly-and rather serve as optional glimpses into Hoshido's and Nohr's values and culture itself-any kind of instance where you could question the kinds of behavior is pretty much brushed to the side.
Plus, iirc Corrin was rightfully put off by Peri's attitude when she first meets her in Chapter 12 (I think she also comments on why Xander has such weird retainers too haha) but since she trusts Xander's judgement she also trusts the fact that she'll be able to put a handle on Peri's antics. Also because, as you say, Peri is not really aware that what she does and says is wrong-or at the very least it's hard for her to stop-I think Corrin, being the kind of person who always gives people the benefit of the doubt, she's more patient with Peri's behavior than Hans.
The chapter begins with Yukimura, who for some reason is not recruitable in this route, defending Castle Shirasagi from invaders. Ryoma and Scarlet show up and win the battle for him. Ryoma talks about how Corrin was an amazing leader, even as a child, something that made Ryoma jealous. Apparently, Corrin lost all of those leadership qualities when Garon bonked them in the head, because Corrin is a terrible leader. Ryoma says his jealousy over child Corrin led to him allowing them to be kidnapped, a ridiculous plot point the game just drops on us without any mention before or after. Ryoma and Scarlet decide to go to the Bottomless Canyon. Hinoka also decides to go. Yukimura makes them promise to come back safely.
Meanwhile, team Corrin arrives at the Lava Fields, a flaming hellscape bordering the Bottomless Canyon. Elise complains that no one is waiting for them in the fiery shithole that they didn’t tell anyone to go to. Azura says the skies will change soon. Hans, who was only really a good villain in Birthright, shows up with the Nohrian army. Takumi and Camilla blame Xander for betraying them.
Ryoma, Hinoka, Scarlet, Setsuna, and Azama all show up. This map's gimmick is walls of fire criss-crossing the map that separate your units. I do not like this map gimmick; it isn’t so intrusive that it's unmanageable, but it's one of those Revelation gimmicks that exists just to be a gimmick. After killing Hans, the gang makes it to the bridge from the start of the game, only to run into another army of soldiers, this one led by Iago.
Revelation Chapter 17: Black Flames
That’s right, two chapters without a break in-between, which means two chapters in this entry. We also don’t get to save between the chapters, so fuck you if you die. Team Corrin prepares for a brutal fight that they can’t flee from and the battle begins.
At the start of turn two, a bunch of tough reinforcements show up. But, don’t worry, because the cavalry shows up. Xander and Leo ride into battle, outrunning their retainers with their higher movement stats. Niles, Odin, Peri, and Laslow all show up a turn later, giving us all but two of our units. Excluding children, that is.
Quick question. In the last chapter, Camilla speculated that Hans was able to find them because Xander stayed loyal to Nohr and told him. Except, Xander didn’t stay loyal. So how did Hans and Iago know to be here? Whatever. Iago dies easily.
Honestly, even though they were back-to-back, neither of these chapters were really difficult, primarily because Ryoma and Xander are overpowered and will continue to make this game a joke for a while.
After the battle, Xander reveals the shocking truth that Garon is evil and being mind-controlled. Ryoma suggests a truce, something I assumed was implicit from Xander killing a Nohrian general to protect the Hoshidans. Ryoma and Xander shake hands, the two families bicker, and Azura praises Corrin for making the right choice to make this all possible. This is giving me Conquest Azura flashbacks and I don’t like it,
Support: Ryoma/Xander
C: Xander tells Ryoma that his men are complaining about Hoshidans surveilling them and won't let Corrin talk to Nohrians alone. Ryoma says he trusts Xander, but many in his army do not. Ryoma explains that this is justifiable, because Garon murdered his father and kidnapped Corrin. Also he's actively invading Hoshido throughout this game. Xander says Ryoma's wrong, but his actions are understandable and that his men can endure suspicion.
B: Ryoma orders his men to stop escorting Corrin. Xader tells Ryoma to be practical, and that putting his soldier's minds at ease is more important than social obligation. Trust will come in time.
A: Ryoma's men continue to be chill. Xander questions him, and Ryoma explains that he ordered his men to pursue the real enemy. Evidentially, they decided that enemy isn't the Nohrian turn cloaks. Ryoma thanks Xander for reminding him that the important thing is fighting Valla. Xander says he hopes they can be friends in the future. Ryoma objects, because why can't they be friends now?
Review: Good, if a bit repetitive. Shows Xander and Ryoma as good leaders.
Support: Leo/Takumi
C: Takumi and Leo meet, even though I'm pretty sure they've already met, and both agree they hate each other.
B: Takumi and Leo complain about people comparing them, because they're nothing alike. As they talk, they realize they have identical hobbies.
A: Leo and Takumi become bros.
Review: Not great. The structure isn't bad, but it makes both of them act like children, and ignores the real differences in their personalities.
Support: Hana/Keaton
C: Keaton tries to ambush Hana. She isn't surprised and hits him with a wooden sword. Keaton says he was holding back and Hana accuses him of lying.
B: Keaton shows Hana his latest treasure: a human skull he found in the woods. Hana thinks it's gross.
A: Hana defeats Keaton in an ambush while he's carrying treasures. Keaton starts crying.
S: Keaton defeats Hana. Hana says she's so strong because she has someone she wants to protect. Keaton says he loves her.
Review: Really bland. It's trying to do something with Hana being blunt, but nothing that happens is interesting.
Support: Benny/Oboro
C: Oboro mistakes Benny for a boulder. Beny is creeped out by her face she makes when talking to Nohrians. Oboro casually says she hates everyone from Nohr, but that she'll get used to Benny eventually.
B: Oboro makes the creepy face. Benny pulls out his weapon and she screams at him till he drops it. Oboro speculates she can sense negative emotions from Nohrians, including fear.
A: Oboro stops doing the face because she's cool with Benny. Benny shows her his charms.
S: Benny proposes. Oboro says she'll never forgive Nohr, but loves Benny.

abt the map: leonés y murciano si cuentan? EONAVIEGU????????? darija a ceuta i rifeny a melilla i portugués a algunes zones pero no se m'acudeixen més q no siguin dialectes

Is Randolph just Caellach/Hans but in a game that doesn't realize how much of a power-hungry psycho he is and, as such, thinks it's a good idea to try and frame his death as a bad thing?
Randolph tries to pull the uwu punches at us, and even gives us Flèche, whose sole role is to cry over her brother and, in AG, be the catalyst for Dimitri's change.
(on that note, TS pulled a more successful Flèche than Fodlan!).
Caellach and Hans are just, well, axe bosses lol, who want to "become King" by pilling up achievements or in general, being the "strongest one around" - but they are always defeated and never uwu'd upon, because both of their games doesn't pull any punches depicting what their so called muhrit entails - Hans slaughters prisoners who surrendered, and Caellach helps bring back Satan, betraying his former "friend" and ruining his life (rekting his mom and bbq'ing his home).
OTOH, Fodlan wants us to feel sorry for Randolph by creating Flèche, but sweeping under the rug the things Randy does to earn "muhrit" and fame - he is only an enemy unit, right?
The game doesn't show us him hunting green villagers NPCs to kill them, or the equivalent of Green Ostian knights trying to protect the monastery (we only know green villagers NPCs were hunted because Emile tells us the general area around the monastery is already a battlefield!) because that might sour your Hresvelg Tea, but given how Randolph is associated to Supreme Leader, her conquest and her IdEaLs that you have rank up "achievements" to become something, if Hans was under her ranks, her point would be sort of moot.
(iirc, wasn't this one of the criticisms thrown at Xander? Him putting Hans in jail but keeping Peri as a vassal?)
