I would have gone to war with all England's might behind me, and even against England's interests, to defend you, Thomas. I would have given away my life laughingly for you. Only I loved you and you didn't love me. That's the difference.
Becket (1964) dir. Peter Glenville

Becket 1964 fans I think y'all need to watch The Prisoner 1955. It's a story about another troublesome priest entangled in political matters who has ambivalent sentiments about his prosecutor (and vice versa).
It's directed by the same director Peter Glenville and is also based on a loosely-historical stage-play. And it has Alec Guinness as the mentally unstable good catholic and Jack Hawkins as his interrogator. At some point I thought the cardinal was about to say "you are merely a general and I must be king" when confronted with his antagonist.

Henry, for all our sakes, think of England and not of your disappointed love for this man... You have an obsession about him, which is unhealthy and unnatural... If Thomas Becket were a faithless woman, you'd behave no differently. Sweet Jesus, tear him out of your heart!
