On Awkward Types

I watched a retrospective on Phil Fish, last night. Once the most hated guy in all of games development. Fish is now a ghost who pops up on Twitter every once in a while to mention that a project of his is under development - and then typically cancels it days or weeks later.

He just wasn't equipped to deal with toxicity, and figured he'd fling vitriol right back. Telling Japanese game devs that they "sucked" when he later admitted that this was an awkward stab at the Japanese concept of UI design - considering the same devs he lambasted thanked him for his criticism - really does feel like the guy just wasn't meant to be at the helm of an indie game studio.

The same goes for any project. Walt's the face of our company, and Sarah and I are more than happy to fade into the background. He's the one who can quite literally put his belly forward and act like an assertive chest-puffer - when the rest of us know he's basically as structurally sound as a wet saltine. He's got the right stuff to head the company, but he needs people at the rear to patch up his failings. This is where us quiet types come in.

I know myself - I'm worse than Fish ever was. I don't unload for months or years, and then typically explode. That puts me in the rear, where toxic clients can't get to me quite as easily.

The problem is that Fish didn't admit it to himself. The funny thing is the former PR rep for Polytron was a college friend of mine, and she told me Phil just wasn't used to this kind of attention.

Again, not everyone's due or even qualified for the limelight. It's important to acknowledge that. I say that, of course, saying that his stints at Ubisoft and Motion were both just as emotionally demanding.
