I'm sorry but that viral Tumblr post about mermaids changing gender had me thinking of Philip and Syrena. Imagine her changing gender abruptly and he's still smitten, just absolutely in love and crosses himself like "Lord forgive me"

Philip Swift's Character & Personality

Philip is a young stalwart and soulful missionary. He has strong faith as a believer in God. Philip is also a simple and humble man of few possessions. Thus, he's a lonely voice of reason in a world of madness. When Philip is taken prisoner and ruthlessly tortured, his strong-will helps his spirit remain unbroken. Idealistic, courageous and fearless, he defied legendary pirates in an attempt to rescue their eternal souls. Yet, Philip knows some souls, who are pure evil, can't be saved. Being compassionate, he's quite caring towards others. Philip is known for expressing concern for the innocent and will try to defend them several times. He'll even change is point of view on those he once deemed bad or evil after they prove themselves otherwise. In fact, Philip is willing to listen to others regardless of what they have to say in hopes they'll speak of good intentions.
