Iced Golden Tea

2 cups + 6 cups of water. (2 cups for steeping, 6 cups of cool water to add to your steeped concentrate) 

8 tsp. (or 2 heaping Tbsp.) of dried turmeric or 4 in. of fresh turmeric, thin sliced or chopped (including the skin is fine)

8 tsp. (or 2 heaping Tbsp.) of dried ginger or 4 in. of fresh ginger (or less if it’s the fatter ginger variety but it’s hard to go wrong), thin sliced or chopped (including the skin is fine)

1 tsp. ground black pepper

¼ -½ cup of honey

Add the turmeric, ginger, and pepper to a saucepan. Cover with two cups of water. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer for a few minutes. Turn off the heat. 

Cover your pan and allow it to steep for an hour or so or even overnight.

Add the honey in the heating stage to help it dissolve. If it is high-quality raw honey, allow the mixture to cool a bit before adding it.

Strain out the root. If you are using fresh root, you can save it and make more tea. If you are using powder, I recommend straining your mixture through cheesecloth or a tight-weave strainer just to remove some of the gritty powder. The texture of your drink will be far better.

You now have a concentrate. Cool it in your refrigerator and dilute it to taste. I would add an extra six cups of water to the mixture as the recipe calls for but you may want to add far more water for a lighter beverage.

I know people think being any kind of otherkin is fun and games or unserious, it's not feeling completely different from humanity and thus not being able to relate very well to most of the people you encounter. Knowing with every fiber of your being that this is not your true form or self leads to alot of anxiety and depression that you have to work through to gather the acceptance of your situation and connect with your true self, while learning to communicate with others who also know they are different, and with those who do not. This is not fun this is not a kink this is a true existence and I do not appreciate those who think those things about us, stop prejudice in no form is acceptable we are different but we are part of this world and have enough feelings to deal with without adding prejudice into the mix.

Signs and Confirmation

When I got home from doing some things, I decided to check the plants quick out back... and ended up doing some gardening a little and filled up the fish pond. I found some little black dots on the back of the dwarf citrus’ leaves I have, so I got a wet paper towel and wiped them off, and then kind of just sat there a bit thinking and taking in the garden and the sky. 

I closed my eyes for a bit and asked for a sign if I'm right on my journey with the phoenix things just to be sure sure. After a minute, I got up, and started cleaning up my stuff, when a huge hawk glided down right over my head and I'm like o.o ... my signnnnn.... and then to my surprise, ANOTHER huge soaring hawk swooped down and joined the first flying right over my garden and me .... and then .... ANOTHER. 3 HAWKS were flying right over my head, staying, just swooping over me and my garden for a few whole minutes and then finally, they just glided off with the wind over the houses and away.

I think I got my sign. ;)

I'm Vietnamese phoenix (Phượng) kin and my one semi-serious otherkin friend maintains that I cannot possibly be both a Phượng in a past life and Vietnamese in this life because "what are the odds" and "that seems like you projecting your current ethnicity onto the past". What's a polite way to tell her that I'm well aware it's a statistical oddity but I did my research and my memories don't match up with the descriptions of other Asian phoenixes and I'm 90% sure I'm a Phượng?

Honestly, that exact sentence - “it's a statistical oddity but I did my research and my memories don't match up with the descriptions of other Asian phoenixes and I'm 90% sure I'm a Phượng” - is a pretty good one to start with.

First: I’m not totally sure if you actually believe it’s a past life, so I’ll bring up the fact that not all kintypes come from past lives in the first place. Psychological explanations exist, alternative spiritual explanations exist, and some people don’t have an explanation at all and are totally okay with that. With a lot of psychological explanations, and even a lot of spiritual ones, your kintype being from a culture you’re familiar with makes total sense and isn’t an oddity at all. Of course, if you do believe it’s a past-life thing, this isn’t relevant, but I thought I’d bring it up because a lot of people equate “kintype” to “past life” when that’s not true.

Second: something being statistically unlikely doesn’t make it not true. A hell of a lot of things are statistically unlikely and still happen. It’s statistically unlikely for me to be ace (only a 3-5% chance!), but here I am. It’s statistically unlikely for someone to be both cisgender and alterhuman (according to community surveys), but that still happens. Hells, it’s statistically unlikely for someone to be nonhuman, but here we are, a thriving community. “Statistically unlikely” things happen all the time. And if you really want to talk about statistics, it’s not actually any more statistically unlikely for you to be a Phượng than it is for you to be any other kintype. It’s just that our brains perceive that as a “weird coincidence,” compared to other kintype-ethnicity alignments.

Third: even if you are “projecting,” that doesn’t change what you’re experiencing. The cause of your otherkinity doesn’t dictate whether or not you are otherkin. Again: psychological explanations exist.

Edit: Fourth, actually: even with a past life, there may be a reason you reincarnated into someone connected to that heritage. Who knows what that reason may be, but who’s to say it isn’t there?

Finally, and probably most importantly: no one has the right to dictate your identity except you. Bluntly, your friend is being extremely rude by insisting that you can’t be a Phượng because they decided it’s “unlikely.” They’re negating your experiences and effectively saying they know your experiences and identity better than you do by doing this - whether or not that was their intention. Even if they privately think you’re wrong about some piece of this, they have no right to push that opinion on you. They don’t get to tell you you’re wrong about being a Phượng for the same reason people don’t get to tell me I’m wrong about being a dragon - it’s a personal metaphysical experience, and no one can know firsthand what you’re experiencing in that way except you. (And people trying to do that is usually a red flag for manipulative behavior - though not always, and like I said, it’s very possible it’s not their intention.)

...This was not a very helpful conversation script, probably, though. Hmm.

As far as presenting this to them - I would wait until it comes up again, and then say something along the lines of:

I appreciate that you’re encouraging me to think about and question this, but please trust me when I tell you I have done that. I did my research, and my memories don't match up with the descriptions of other Asian phoenixes, and I'm 90% sure I'm a Phượng. Even if you think it’s unlikely, that’s what lines up with my [feelings/memories/experiences/etc.], and it’s getting a little [insert feelings here: frustrating/hurtful/etc] for me when you keep insisting that I’m wrong about my own experiences.

Beyond that, if they want to keep talking about it and you’re okay with that, or if you want to explain further without prompting, you can bring up the stuff I talked about here. Feel free to copy-paste stuff, including that opening paragraph (I wrote it specifically for your use if you want it :P), or you can rewrite it in your own words. (When in doubt, couch stuff in very polite, forgiving language and “I” statements, not “you” statements (ie, “I think I wasn’t clear enough” rather than “you’re not listening to me,” stuff like that) - “you” statements tend to make people more likely to get defensive. I didn’t always do that in this post, because it’s not directed at them, so be aware of that when copy-pasting anything from here.)

But don’t be afraid to put your foot down and just say “It’s [frustrating/hurt/ful/etc] for me when you insist I’m wrong about my own experiences, and I don’t want to argue about it anymore. I don’t want to have to justify my identity every time this comes up.” It’s okay if you don’t want to go into the whole spiel I just did.

Peanut Butter & Honey Ice Cream

2 cups heavy cream, divided

1 cup whole milk

⅓ cup granulated sugar

3 Tbsp. honey

pinch salt

4 egg yolks

1 tsp. vanilla extract

⅔ cup creamy peanut butter

To make the ice cream, pour 1 cup of the heavy cream into a heat-proof bowl and nest inside a larger bowl filled with ice water. Place a fine mesh sieve over the top of both bowls.

In a saucepan, combine remaining cream, milk, sugar, honey, and salt. Cook gently over medium heat, stirring regularly, until sugar is dissolved and mixture just starts to steam. Remove from heat.

In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks. Slowly whisk in some of the warm cream mixture, 1/3 cup at a time, until about half of the cream mixture has been incorporated and yolk mixture is warm to the touch. You want to do this gradually; doing so will temper the egg yolks rather than cook them.

Pour yolk mixture back into the saucepan and return to medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spatula, about 5 to 7 minutes, or until it reaches approximately 165 to 170ºF. Do not allow it to boil. Pour mixture through sieve into cold cream, discarding any solids. Add vanilla extract and stir until cool. Cover mixture with plastic wrap, carefully pressing wrap down onto the surface of the cream mixture. This will prevent a skin from forming on top of the custard. Refrigerate until completely cool, at least 3 hours or overnight if possible.

Just prior to churning the ice cream, spoon peanut butter into a piping bag fitted with a medium size round tip (you can also drop dollops of peanut butter in if you prefer, but I found the piping bag produced a more swirl-like result).

Churn ice cream according to manufacturer’s instructions. When ice cream is the consistency of soft serve, squeeze in the peanut butter, swirling it evenly throughout the ice cream, then transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze overnight until firm.
