Aaaad I did three more of this 100 Faces-Thing. But these are the last one. And I have to say - I love to draw angry / feaky faces. Love Phrike here a lot.
Now back to the ask ♥

Soo,… Phrike hates the Legions and Tantalus hates the Legions, too.
How would your boy react, if Phrike would try to get him into his ranks? He is always in need of capeable people and Tantalus, as skilled assassin, would definitely be someone Phrike would have an eye on. Promising him a high rank - a bright future in his group.
Would Tantalus accept his offer or would he decline?
(@wilsons-journey)
Gonna answer this in-character. ---
Tantalus listens intently to the recruitment, a face fully serious, never betraying an emotion. That is until he hears that last part.
His expression immediately sours, scoffing and turning his head so that his scarred side is hidden, his luminous amber eyes peek from the shadow of his hat. "You had good bait there, til you mentioned ranks."
His voice shifts from interest to dismissiveness. "High rank? Bright future? Spent over a decade in the Legions slaving away for that, it's the reason they tortured me too, like hell would I willingly get into another."
Tantalus' head angles to the side, showing more of his shadowed face. "Don't get me wrong though, not saying you're just like them. I just can't stand being ruled over- Told what to do and when to do it. I'm a free charr, more than anything, my freedom is what matters most to me."
He faces forward again, and leans his elbows on his knees. "So I'm gonna have to turn down this 'recruitment.' You stick to your ways. I'll stick to mine, I work better alone anyway."

One thing I don’t miss about gaming in the older generations is no auto saving, not being able to save whenever you feel like it, and the possibility of save points and checkpoints being a decent chunk of time before whatever point it was that you died. Getting through a difficult section that took multiple attempts only to die shortly after then respawning to right before that section sucked! It stressed me out! I’m pretty sure I can blame a few gray hairs on it!
Time loop games have that same vibe for me. Dying is part of the gameplay and sometimes has to happen to progress, but it’s like I’ve got a weird primal instinct that’s constantly on alert and goes into overdrive whenever I’m in a difficult fight. I know that I get a little better after each attempt, or maybe I’ll get lucky with the gear drops on the next run, but it just feels wrong.
I’ve been playing Returnal for the last few days and after a few hours of playing my body is wired. It’s meant to be challenging so there are no easier difficulty settings to try out if you can’t quite cut it. But!! My third attempt went great!! I made it to the boss of biome 1 and beat it on the first try. The PlayStation trophy stats say about 58% of players that started the game didn’t make it that far, so I feel pretty dang proud of myself.
Unfortunately, biome 2 kicked my ass a few sections in and it took multiple attempts to make it to the boss. I got halfway through the third stage before kicking the bucket and waking back up at the crash site was kinda demoralizing? I was not looking forward to fighting my way through all that again. When I got to the base of the mountain in biome 2 and there was a teleport back to the peak I almost cheered in relief.
The main reason I tried out Returnal is, no joke, the fact that the protagonist is a middle aged woman. I’m uh…not that far out from that age range (depending on how you define it) so it’s very refreshing! The challenging difficulty was definitely a turn off - and might still be, who knows if I’ll end up beating it - but there’s enough anti-frustration features to keep me from throwing in the towel just yet. If I had to fight all the bosses again in every run like in Hades, I think I would’ve immediately uninstalled if I couldn’t bypass Phrike lol.
Since I kinda suck, I have no idea when I’ll finally manage to finish, if ever, so I looked up the playtime estimates. I am…very skeptical.
Tumblr media
How are people beating the main story in 20 hours??? And that’s an average, so some people are doing it in less than that??? What sorcery is this??? I’m not sure how long I’ve been playing, but it’s gotta be just under 10 hours and I’ve only seen 2 of 6 biomes. What the hell.
Anyway, I think I’ve finally calmed down after my last play session so it’s bedtime!

The Muses in Brief:
Tarnished:
Hunter - loud, annoying, and possibly just a little bit mad. Sings when fights get difficult, gives terrible nick names, and talks oddly consistent nonsense if you can parse it at all. Sews.
Rhys - deaf, uses sign language (specifically asl), a collection of prattling pates strung on a necklace, and a wax tablet to communicate, scared of horses. Too patient for his own good.
War Surgeons:
Context Headcanon post HERE
Juzan - the only one that has any kind of claim to being a real doctor. Hates it here. Also the only one left alive by the start of the game.
Rowen - baby of the group, also the most dangerous in combat.
Rosalie - anatomy nerd with a sadistic streak. Likes makeup.
Bruce -  just here to do his job making him maybe the third worst of the bunch.
Elle Hasselti -  quite possibly a cannibal.
Magdolaine the Surgeon General - condescending in the extreme, cares deeply about her surgeons (minus Juzan because he was a later addition), but everyone else can go die in a ditch.
Other:
Calendula "Ruddle" The Gilded Omen - Plucked out of the sewers as a child, trussed up and trained as a dancer at an underground freak show in Leyndell, her troop left her behind after the shattering so she wanders alone.
Blood Priestess Phrike - ex finger maiden, now gleefully researches blood incantations for the dynasty.
Dog the Wandering Archive - A stone tortoise with a cart full of books and small hat. They’re Miriel's on-again off‐again apprentice as they’re often seized by wanderlust and a hunger to learn new things.

ALRIGHT! Time to introduce you to some faces!
Desmond Schneeglut (Snowembers) - Best friend to Vale, but also Mentor. Weird eremit and protector of the wilds. No one knows how old he is - not even Vale. He is odd. He rarly speaks, so people thinks he can't speak. With a very few exceptions, he prefers creatures over his kind. (and humans,... and asura,... and everyone else) He was also once a Member of the Flame Legion. He is also a good Friend to Baal.
Orez - Son of Vale and Deus - younger Brother of Fume. He currently is in Desmond's Care - far away from all the war and dragon business. And he is a handful to handle. A bundle of energy. Always on the search of adventure - even in the mist. Good thing only Desmond knows about that. Vale would freak out.
Baal Aschblut (Ashblood) - Former Flame Legion General and half brother to Deus. They share the same Father, who is also part of the Flame-Legion. Baal killed him after he murdered his Mate (and with her nearly his fresh born daughter, too) On the run from the fury of the other Flame Legion, he collapsed somewhere in the wild. A Norn took him in. And to that Norn, he leaves his Daughter - after he heard his father wasn't dead - yet. His daugther is Wilson.
Phrike Duskshard or also know as "the Undying" - "You tried to kill me once, Tried to kill me twice. Even a third time. But here I'm still standing. The undying. And now,... Now I'm coming for you." He is a lunatic. He hates the Charr Legions, but still he holds his Kind dear. He sees himself as the savior of the charr. And with that mindset, he managed to gather a huge crowd of loyal followers around him. All willing to die for his cause.

Prince of Thorns & Nightmares - Review
Tumblr media
Author: Linsey Miller Date Read: February 24, 2024 - February 26, 2024 Format: Physical Pages: 426
Characters: 9/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Writing: 10/10 Plot: 10/10 Intrigue: 10/10 Logic: 10/10 Enjoyment: 10/10 Rating: 9.7/10 (5 stars)
I knew from the moment I read the summary of this book that I was going to love it, but I wasn't expecting to re-discover myself in these 426 pages. Sleeping Beauty was my first Disney movie-my most watched Disney movie as a child-and even though it has been probably 25 years since I last saw it, I still have vivid images of it in my mind, but, at the same time, a lot of details are blurred, and this book filled those holes perfectly.
The review is hidden below due to spoilers.
Let's talk about characters!
Philip is not a prince charming by any chance. Part of the reason why this book does not have a perfect 10 is because Philip was kind of a selfish bastard that frustrated me at times with his self-loathing and uselessness. However(!), by the end, I understood perfectly the reason for his behavior and mentality. It was a much needed growth arc that lead him from being a do-nothing gallivanting Prince to the Hero of our story.
Aurora/Briar Rose is a perfect princess who can't do anything wrong and I will defend her with my life. She is sassy, she is smart, she is a dreamer. She is everything I love and care about, and I'm so, so happy that this book changed her for me. Aurora has always been my favorite Disney Princess, but growing up I was always ashamed of it because she basically doesn't do much, right? She lies there, sleeping, until she's awaken by a kiss. What does that say about me? But this book made her a fighter, someone who didn't rest until she got the answers to her questions, who never gave up, even when things got hard. *chef's kiss*
I don't remember if Eris, Poena and Phrike are in the original story or not, but I thought they were a great addition to the book. I loved the betrayal, the way they tricked Philip into believe he had magic so he could steal the sword and shield for them. I loved the hint at a redemption arc for Eris that ended up not happening in the end. I thought it was the perfect way for the author to take the rug from underneath our feet while letting us remain in a safety bubble only to burst that bubble at the end. Again, *chef's kiss*
Short mention to King Hubert. I hate him and everything he represent parent-wise, and no matter that he apologized and saw his errors in the end, I still hate what he did to Philip.
The plot and writing of this book were simply perfect. I was hooked from the get go and couldn't stop thinking about the book when I was forced to take breaks. I literally stayed up to late to finish reading because I was so excited about it.
Seeing this side of Aurora and Philip's story was a nice complement to the original tale (when I mention 'original tale', I'm talking about the 1959 Disney movie, not Charles Perrault's story). Being witness to the flourishing of their love-with the enemies to friends to lovers arc that I love so much-in the dream world was exactly what I needed to fill the gaps in my memory of this story, but also a reminder of how this was one of my first ships. Reading their meeting in the dream world and consequent re-meet in the real world made me kick my feetsies in the air and gave me butterflies. :')
The end of the book was perfect, too. It gave us a little glimpse at what happens after "they lived happily ever after", while also keeping the narrative open to a possible sequel (which I would read in a heartbeat).
Honorable mentions:
Johanna referring to Samson as Your High Horseness made me cackle.
"You have to practice to get good at things. [...] That's why I write all the time and we spar so often. The more we fail, the better we get." Boy, do I relate to this. A much needed slap of reality to teach me a lesson.
"You're scared to love anyone and disappoint them like you do your father that you don't even love yourself, no matter how self-centered you pretend to be." I need an Aurora in my life to yell some truths in my face like this, please.
"The dreams are the only interesting to ever happen to me. [...] These dreams are all I have." This part absolutely broke my heart. Firstly because Philip finally realizes Briar Rose has been lying about roaming the kingdom and having the freedom to do what she wants with her life, then because we, readers, realize Briar Rose only made up these lies because she was jealous of Philip's freedom, and lastly because I, again, relate so much to her. When I was 16 all I had were books and dreams.
A quote that stayed:
It's easy to be envious of someone when you think you know their life, but you can't ever, can you?

@singofus asked: Nyx's robes gently ruffle at the bottom as a very small darkling slips into them to hide and seek comfort close to the queen herself. Faint hands grasp gently at her ankle (Phrike)
oh , how nyx had missed this !! a small one , BARELY physical most of the time , hiding in her robes , braver than any hero and sweeter than any ambrosia . she hums as they make contact with her ankle , acknowledging them , turning her foot to gently press her ankle into their grasp , letting them know she is not shying away from them .
she works efficiently yet accurately , finishing up her notes on the reading hekate had left for her — notes on a project not yet ready to share with anyone . she places the QUILL back into its holder , caps her INK and slides it into the correct space on her desk .
with a wave of her hand the newly dried parchment folds into a crescent moon and floats towards the brazier glowing with BLACK FLAME in the corner . the magic engulfs it , sending it off to be delivered to hekate's own message collection system .
with that sorted , she closes the writing desk and turns her attention to the little one hiding in her robes .
come to learn , my child ? she murmurs into their mind , knowing they may not wish to speak aloud and not feeling the need to fill the space with more noise than the crackle of fire and shifting of plant life outside in the winds of creation . or is something the matter ?
she can usually tell , but this little one is so tentative even in the best of circumstances that it does take her a moment .
