I love wooden netsuke, but I am not very skilled in carving yet (I'm trying though!). So this way using 3D modelling can get me closer to visualizing my ideal designs 😊

Wheeler's Smoky Dragon • Particle Physics Illustration • 2019 / 2020

The physicist John Wheeler compared a particle to a "smoky dragon": we can know precisely where it originates (tail) and where it's measured (head) but in between is just nebulous probability.
I first illustrated this idea in 2018, while Art Director of Quanta Magazine. Article by Anil Ananthaswamy (Read here: https://tinyurl.com/QMdragon2018).
I was severely limited by time, then. ([Doing] illustration was not a priority when I was the sole AD, managing everything visual). I’ve wanted to try again & improve it.

In 2021 I entered Pixologic’s Zbrush Summit sculpt-off: a challenge to sculpt a character in under 3 hours.
For the sculpt-off version I kept the cages, signifying futile traps that our trickster dragon loops around and nears, but would never be caught by. The new source & detector are symbolized by a lantern & eye.
Again, time limitation! But it was a fun learning experience.
Dragons and physics are a couple of my favorite subjects, so I’ll have to try to “capture” this one again sometime.

In approaching the concept design for The Witch, I opted for a ZBrush sculpting method. This decision was driven by the efficiency it offers in creating detailed models that can be easily decimated and seamlessly integrated into Unreal Engine. By leveraging ZBrush's sculpting capabilities, I aimed to expedite the design process while ensuring a high level of detail and realism for The Witch character. This streamlined workflow not only reduces the time required for completion but also facilitates smoother integration into our project environment.
