May I ask *how* Mammon from Helluva Boss is bad asexual representation?
I'm ace myself, & have a video script about asexuality I hope to one day be able to produce once I get some recording & editing equipment/software, & analyzed Mammon's appearances so far (so just S2) for it, & I came to the conclusion that he's not as bad as most people say he is when it comes to asexual representation. His ace portrayal is DEFINITELY FLAWED, but not to the degree I think most people make it out to be. To summarize...
1.) He actually has some moments in his debut episode that subtly imply he's ace (while still staying in character with him being a jerk), they're easy to miss to the point one might be able to write them off as plausible unrelated coincidences though; these moments including his deflection about making robots of whoever wins his clown pageant being seen as "weird" at the beginning of the episode, calling his customers "sick degenerate adults" during the Robo Fizz ad, & possibly him not quite understanding the implications when he tells Fizz during the fan-meet, "The better the impression, the more they’ll want a piece of you to take home & fuck! Don’t you want that, Fizzie? To be fucked?!"
2.) When he says in Mastermind, “Oh shut up, you two. We all know you enjoy slumming it with the lower class plebs. Unlike the rest of us, heh. Right Levy?” definitely read as ace to me the first viewing alone.
Most of his moments DEFINITELY needed another pass, especially by an experienced & asexual writer since the stuff he says to Fizz during the fan-meet doesn't read as ace at all, the way he doesn't say anything to Beelzebub about him being ace when she says stuff that shows she either doesn't understand asexuality or just doesn't care to learn anything about him in Mastermind in favor of unnatural dialogue between the two mindlessly insulting each other, & Mammon's dialogue & body language/expressions when he flirts with Leviathan don't read as asexual in the slightest, at least to me.
So what I'd like to know, if possible, is what evidence is there that he's as bad of asexual representation as so many folks seem to imply? The way everyone talks about him (without explaining their reasoning alongside the facts), makes it sound like he's clearly harmful representation with loads of misinformation, but I couldn't find any evidence of something like that when I wrote that part of my script. If there's something really bad about him I've missed, I'd love to add it to my script!
I understand Medrano's personal opinions of asexuality over the years is full of red flags & misinformation (that hopefully she'll finally bury with her potentially being on the ace-spectrum & actively trying to learn more about it), but just looking at Mammon's portrayal alone, is there something I'm missing? I'm approaching this as someone who just wants to learn, so if you can teach me something here & don't mind taking the time to do so, please do!
My main beef with Mammon and his asexuality representation is that it feels like stereotype of what some think asexual people are. Portrayed as selfish jerks who don’t care about others but themselves, inflated ego, etc. It also doesn’t help that Mammon is portrayed as this greedy, disgusting pig (metaphorically and literally) who uses others when it benefits him. I get it, he’s the sin of greed but with the asexual representation added on top of that, it is not a good look but hopefully Vivziepop does a better job handling it when season 3 and 4 comes.

Bradley thought he was hilarious with the way he refused to tell you where you and he were going for the night on Friday. He wouldn't even tell you how you were getting there. All he said every time you asked was, "Just pack a bag and find out."
"Infuriating," you whispered to yourself at work on Thursday. When you heard footsteps coming up behind you in the hallway, you turned to see Jake rushing your way. "Seriously? Don't you ever work?"
"Come on, Angel," he whined. "I'm gonna ask her out. I just need one more shot at talking to her."
You sighed and said, "Fine. Come on. We could actually use your help."
A few minutes later, Jake looked absolutely delighted as Cat had him sit down on the stool next to hers. "Ready?" she asked him. "There are a lot of questions."
"I'm ready," he replied, eyes glued to her face as she opened the aviation survey document on her computer. It wasn't like this needed to be completed today. The software was still in the testing stage. But you knew this would be a good excuse to keep Jake in the lab for a little while and let him engage with Cat.
"Name, age, rank and aircraft. Please," she asked him. You tried to sit quietly and work further down the counter, but you were half focused on them.
"Jacob C. Seresin. Thirty three. Lieutenant. F/A-18." His voice was calm and even as he answered her, but you could see his leg bouncing a little bit. He was so smitten it was absolutely ridiculous.
"What does the C stand for?" she asked, entering his information.
"That's classified," he told her with a smirk.
She turned to look at him with a smirk of her own. "Your full name is Jacob Classified Seresin?"
You had to press your lips together as Jake started laughing. "Shoulda thought that one through a little better," he drawled with a blush. "It actually stands for Christopher."
"Where are you from, Lieutenant Classified?" she asked, and he leaned in to look at her screen.
"Is that actually a question?"
"No," she said softly. "I was just curious about your accent."
Jake's voice sounded smug as hell as he said, "It's not an accent, Lieutenant Coleman. It's a drawl." And then you were forced to listen to their flirtation mixed in with the real survey questions for the better part of an hour.
When Cat was finally done gathering information about Jake's flight history, you were surprised she didn't also have his phone number. "Thanks for your help," she told him as they both stood.
"Anytime, Lieutenant," Jake replied. And when he walked past you, he whispered, "I owe you one, Angel."
Once he was gone, you stared at Cat until she looked at you. "If you're interested in big, strong aviators, all you have to do is ask," you told her. "I think he'd happily go out with you."
She scoffed and waved you off. "He's just fun to flirt with a tiny bit. Absolutely none of that was serious."
"Speak for yourself," you muttered.
"Besides, he would never go for a woman like me. At least not for more than a date or two. Maybe a long weekend, if you catch my drift. And after my ex husband, I'm done playing games. Like I said, Lieutenant Seresin is nice to look at, but under no circumstances will I touch."
"Never?" you asked softly.
Cat planted her hand on the counter and leaned toward you. "He gets around, Lieutenant Commander. Women on base brag about it. And I've seen how he is at the bar. Just surrounded at all times."
Once again, you didn't know how to respond.
"But your friend, Cam?" she asked, giving you a pointed look. "He seems sweet."
You remained silent. Cat was beautiful. If she wanted to go out with Jake, she could go out with Jake. If she wanted to go out with Cam, she could go out with Cam. She could probably get pretty much any guy to ask her out if she wanted to. But if she was just going to flirt with Jake, because she thought it was no big deal, then Jake might end up getting hurt in the process if she moved on with someone else.
And then your suspicions started to come true. When you went down to eat lunch with Bradley at noon, you saw Cat and Jake at a small table together. So his reputation was terrible, but not so bad that she didn't want to keep flirting? You sat with your head in your hands until Bradley and Nat joined you.
"What's wrong?" Nat asked, taking the seat across from you. "And where's Jake? He told me he was eating with us."
"He's over there," you said, nodding your head in his direction where he was sitting with Cat. "And she's flirting with him."
"Isn't that good?" Bradley asked, dropping down into the seat next to you.
"No," you groaned. "She likes Cam. She thinks Jake is a womanizer who would never be interested in her. She thinks this is just some harmless flirting."
"Oof, he's about to get shot down isn't he?" Nat asked, and now all there of you were watching across the cafeteria as Cat and Jake smiled at each other. Then Jake leaned in a little closer, and Cat bit her lip.
"Oh no," you whispered, reaching for Bradley's hand as your heart pounded. "Maybe he is a bit of a womanizer?" you asked. "I've seen that look on his face before. He's asking her out."
Bradley laced his fingers with yours. "He's not doing that kind of thing anymore," he told you and Nat. "He seems to be ready to settle down in a relationship. Been talking about it for months. Oh no, there he goes."
Nat gasped as Jake stroked the back of Cat's hand with his thumb. Her smile faltered and she kind of shrugged and shook her head. Even though you couldn't hear them, you had a pretty good idea of how the conversation was going. Cat's hand slid away from his, and soon she was standing to leave.
"Yikes," Nat whispered as the three of you scrambled to make it appear as though you hadn't been watching Jake get turned down. "That was so surreal. Looked exactly like the day you asked your wife out and she told you no," she added to Bradley, trying not to laugh now. "Remember that, Soul Sister?"
Bradley placed a loud, sloppy kiss on your cheek and said, "She came around eventually. One kiss and she was begging me to take her on a date."
You rolled your eyes. "I would love to dispute that, but it's actually the truth."
"Hey, guys," Jake said, gingerly sitting down next to Nat. His face was completely neutral, and his voice was even. But you could tell he was upset.
"Hangman," Bradley grunted. And then he and Nat filled up the silence before it became too much while you picked at your food. And Jake just sat quietly.
--------------------------
"Hard Deck night, Baby Girl," Bradley reminded you when you walked inside after work.
You were tired, and you didn't really feel like going out. The bar would be packed, just like it was every Thursday night, and you were starting to get crampy, which meant your period was coming. "You don't want to stay in?" you asked, pouting up at him. "We could take a bath together."
Bradley ran his thumb along your pouty lips. "We can stay in if you want to, Sweetheart. Let me text Nat and tell her."
Then you kissed his thumb and said, "No, we can go. But maybe we can leave early. I'm exhausted."
Famous last words. At ten o'clock, you were kind of drunk, Bradley's hands were all over you, and Cat was waving you up to the bar. "I'll be right back, Roo," you told him, slipping away before he could keep you with him. Bradley watched you chatting with you coworker, happy you seemed to be getting along with her now.
"I gotta know, man. How do you grow such a good mustache?"
Bradley turned just in time for Cam to try to lean against the edge of the pool table, miss completely and nealy land on his face. Shit, he was as at least as drunk as you were.
"Genetics," Bradley said, thinking of nearly every damn photo he had of Goose sporting the same facial hair. Cam had a bit of a baby face, and the idea of him with a mustache was almost laughable.
Then you walked back over in a state of annoyance. "Oh good, you're here," you said to Cam. "Mr. Popularity."
"What do you mean?" he asked, stroking his bare upper lip.
"You know my coworker Cat? She just told me Jake asked her out, but that she'd rather go out with you."
Cam blinked a few times and then burst into laughter, leaning on Bradley while he hooted. "That's such a funny joke!"
"I'm serious! Roo, tell him I'm serious."
"She's serious," Bradley said, sipping his beer and trying not to get involved in this conversation.
"Nobody would pick me over that guy," Cam replied, pointing to Jake. "He's fucking ripped! And his hair is always perfect. And he can do that thing with his mouth and the toothpicks!"
You started laughing and said, "I tried to tell Cat you're nothing special."
"Wow," Cam said, feigning offense, "you're the worst friend ever. Where's Maria?"
"Wait," you said, still laughing while you grabbed his hand. "Just because your repertoire of talents did nothing for me doesn't mean you're not as good as Jake!"
Bradley choked on his beer, remembering what he had overheard you say to Jake. "I'm sorry. What?"
You both turned to look at him, and Cam's cheeks were turning pink.
"The two of you hooked up?" Bradley asked, wondering why this was something he'd only been hearing about recently. Cam slowly backed away from him, suddenly looking like he was afraid Bradley might hit him. And that's when Bradley realized that his tone definitely sounded a little threatening, but he couldn't take it back now.
"It was ten years ago!" Cam quickly supplied, taking a step to his left once he realized he was standing right next to you.
"Didn't I tell you this, Roo?" you asked, still smiling at Bradley as you cocked your head to the side.
"No. Never," he replied, annoyed at himself for being annoyed about this. It clearly didn't matter at all. It had nothing to do with your marriage. But Cam was the same age as you, and in many ways he was probably well suited for you.
"There's literally nothing to tell," Cam insisted.
"Yeah," you agreed. "It didn't mean anything. We were twenty one. It didn't work for either of us, so we stopped what we were doing and decided to just be friends. Because Cam's moves were decidedly terrible at that age."
"God, you're so annoying," Cam told you with a grin. "You think you had moves? You did not. All you had back then was nice tits."
"Jesus," Bradley growled, pinching the bridge of his nose. Because even though this happened ten years ago, suddenly he was wondering about all the details.
"There was no penetration," you said casually.
"No penetration of any kind," Cam confirmed.
"Then what was there?" Bradley asked as you laced your fingers with his.
"Wait, do fingers count?" Cam asked you, scratching his head. "No, fingers don't count, right? Whatever, all I did was feel her up."
"I wasn't good," you added. "Just friends after that."
"Yep," Cam confirmed, giving Bradley some side eye. "She likes big guys. Muscular ones. Mustaches. Which is exactly why nobody who turned down Jake Seresin would say yes to me."
You rolled your eyes and said, "That's so not true."
Bradley wanted all of the details and none of them at the same time as he pulled you a little closer. But then Cam handed you his drink and said, "Really? Watch this."
"Oh no," you muttered, gasping and clinging to Bradley as Cam walked away.
"Sweetheart, why didn't you ever tell me you and Cam messed around? I hate being blindsided by this shit. You hang out with him all the time."
But you weren't listening to him. You weren't even looking at him. Cam was walking confidently over to Cat, and suddenly he was leaning against the bar next to her, occasionally glancing this way. After a moment, Cat looked delighted, and Cam looked completely shocked.
"He asked her out!" you moaned, burying your face against Bradley's chest. "Poor Jake!"
When Bradley's eyes found Jake, he was glaring daggers from the dartboard over toward Cam and Cat. "Oh, shit," he muttered, wrapping his arm a little tighter around you. "This is a fucking disaster."
"It really is," you whispered.
-------------------------
Jake was upset. You could see it on his face. And now Cam looked concerned. When you tried to talk to him, all he said was, "Apparently I have a date on Saturday night."
And before Cat left the bar for the night, she had a smile on her face as she came over to you and Bradley. "Any idea where I might be able to find a good babysitter for Saturday evening?"
"Babysitter?" Bradley asked her, and you couldn't help but see how his expression changed as he asked Cat, "Do you have a kid?"
"Yes," she replied, looking a little surprised. "I thought you would have told your husband. I have a son. He's a year old."
You desperately wanted her date with Cam to suck, and that made you feel like a shitty person all around. So you were suddenly blurting out, "We can watch him." The look on Bradley's face as he registered that he'd get to spend a few hours playing with a one year old, made your heart clench.
"Yeah, you can drop him off with us," he told Cat, and tears stung your eyes. You had cramps. You'd probably get your period right in the middle of the overnight trip tomorrow night. But you just nodded, because even though Cat was going out with Cam instead of Jake, and even though you still weren't pregnant, you knew Bradley would have fun babysitting.
On the ride home, you were starting to get upset as you sobered up a bit more. You didn't want your mood to make you miserable for your night away.
Bradley was pretty quiet until he asked, "Why didn't you tell me about you and Cam?"
"Nothing to tell," you replied softly. It was the truth. You'd harbored a bit of a crush on your friend at first; he was sweet and funny and you had all of your classes with him. You had spent a lot of time together, and you trusted him. And one night, despite both of your best efforts, it just didn't work when you tried to hookup.
"But you spend a lot of time with him now. So what? Your attraction to him just stopped after one night?" Bradley grunted. "You go out to brunch with Cam and Maria all the time for that disgusting avocado toast. Hell, you make me spend so much time with him, I know what kind of pizza he likes and what he orders at the burger shack."
"Oh my god, Bradley. Exactly. He's just my friend! You know what kind of pizza he likes, because I want you to spend time with my friends!"
"But you clearly care about him."
"Bradley! You lived a whole life with other women before we met!"
"I never cared about them! I never loved them! Cam is your friend, and you care about him."
As soon as he parked the Bronco in the driveway, you were unbuckling your seatbelt and crawling into his lap. "What has gotten into you, Roo?" you asked, straddling his thighs and forcing him to look at you. "Cam? You're jealous of Cam in this moment? Knock it the fuck off."
"I'm sorry," he muttered, wrapping his arms around you. "I just didn't like the way I found out about it. Which isn't fair to you at all. Because you're right...about my past. And I know it has to embarrass you sometimes-"
You silenced him with a kiss as you brushed your fingers through his hair. When your forehead came to rest against his, you said, "Don't talk about yourself like that. You want all the details? We did not date. Cam and I ended up in his bed exactly one time. He was hard until I put my hand down his pants. I was excited until he took my bra off. Then we laughed awkwardly, called it quits, and watched a movie with three feet of space between us. So if you can't get onboard with the avocado toast brunches now, I don't even know what to say."
Bradley laughed a little bit. "I love you, and I'm sorry. I've just been... feeling my age recently, Baby Girl."
"What does that mean?" you asked, pressing your lips to his scarred cheek.
He sighed. "Just trying to make sure I can keep up with you and everything you want."
"I want you."
"I know you do," he whispered.
"Then start acting like it, Bradley. Or I'll call you Grandpa instead of Daddy."
He was silent for a beat as you ran your hand down the front of his body. "You wanna go have some Daddy time right now?"
"It's like you can read my mind."
-------------------------
Bradley wore you out on Thursday night, and you were still tired on Friday after work when he drove up the coastal roads to the mysterious hotel he booked for the night. "Will you please tell me where you're taking me?" you asked for the millionth time.
But he just laughed and said, "The funny thing is, I'm not really sure, Sweetheart. It's some crazy hotel called Le Chateau California, and I'm really only taking you there because they have something I think you'll love."
"What is it?" you asked, suddenly even more curious.
"I'm not telling. We'll have to experience it for ourselves," he said, reaching for your bare thigh and stroking your skin.
"Are we there yet?" you whined. "How much further? I want my surprise."
"You're worse than a child," he said with a smile, inching his hand further up under your dress. "We'll be there in twenty minutes. We're having dinner at eight, and you'll see the surprise then."
Bradley was great at teasing you, but this was perhaps his best effort to date. His fingers were just tucked inside your panties, stroking you while you tried to sit patiently, as he pulled up to a colorful boutique hotel on the outskirts of Newport Beach. "What is this place?" you asked him, whining again as he pulled his hand free before the valet could see where it had been.
"Let's go find out," he said with a smirk. When you strolled into the lobby that looked like you'd fallen down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, Bradley wrapped his arm around your waist.
"This is so cool," you gasped, still a little wound up from Bradley's fingers on your pussy.
You were looking up at him with barely concealed lust. He had both overnight bags slung over his left shoulder like it was nothing. And when the woman at the concierge desk asked for the last name on the reservation, your core clenched as he rasped, "The Bradshaws."
As he handed over his credit card, you whimpered softly. His wide brown eyes were on yours as you pressed your lips together. Then he was smiling, but he didn't pick up the pace like you wanted him to. He asked the woman where the restaurant was located. He listened to her tell him more about the history of the hotel. He asked her another question as she handed over the room keys. He forced your hand.
"Please?" you whispered, pressing yourself to his side.
When he finally led you across the technicolor lobby toward the purple elevators, he pushed the up arrow and said, "We have dinner in twenty minutes."
You nearly wanted to stomp your foot. "You can fuck me in less time than that."
"You told me I'm never fast," he replied as the doors slid open. "So, probably not, Baby Girl."
"Bradley!" you screeched as soon as you and he were alone in the elevator. "I won't make it through dinner and you know it!"
He kissed your lips so softly before the elevator stopped on your floor. "I love it when you get like this," he said as you tripped down the hallway next to him. "Go in and get ready for me." He handed you one of the keys, and you ran down the hallway that looked like a multicolored fever dream, barely taking the time to enjoy any of it.
The hotel room was colorful and spacious with a king bed and a Juliet balcony. There was a view of the beach and some champagne in an ice bucket. But all you were concerned about was getting your underwear off and getting on the bed.
Bradley strolled in and set the bags down before adjusting the thermostat. He tossed his sunglasses on the nightstand and combed his fingers through his hair before turning to watch you where you were laying on the bed with your dress pulled up to your waist. "Get on your knees," he rasped, and you did as you were told. Then his hands and lips were all over your butt and thighs before tasting you from behind.
"Bradley!" you gasped. You'd never get used to how good it felt to have him surprise you there with his mustache. And then you heard him unzip his jeans before wrapping one muscular arm around you and fucking you hard. You rocked forward onto your hands as he slammed into you.
"You're so impatient," he grunted. "Can't even make it to dinner and to your surprise unless you're full of my cum."
It was going to be embarrassing how quickly you came for him when he was dishing out the smug dirty talk. But when his fingers stroked you in time with his thrusts, you smiled and bit your lip. The colorful bedding and walls around the room made you feel a little dizzy, but nothing compared to the sensation when Bradley hit just the right spot inside you and gently spanked your clit.
"Fuck!" you squealed, clenching so hard he groaned your name.
"Shit, Baby Girl," he growled, filling you up with his cum. But you were already there, face planted in the pillows to keep yourself quiet as you came. When you picked your head up a few inches and turned to look back at him while he was still inside you, he rubbed one big palm along your butt. "Sorry I finished so fast. You look pretty with your ass in the air," he whispered.
You pushed yourself up on shaky arms. "And you look pretty with your cock inside me."
He chuckled and withdrew himself, and then he ran his fingers along your pussy like he was massaging his cum back inside you. "I'm not ovulating anymore, Roo," you reminded him. He could cum inside you all weekend and it wouldn't make a difference.
"Doesn't matter," he whispered, leaning down to kiss your butt, thighs and pussy once more. "It's not going to make me want to stop giving you creampies all the time." You sighed softly as he finally stood, and you watched him walk around the bed with his cock hanging out of his jeans. "It's almost time for our dinner reservation," he reminded you as he walked into the bathroom.
You rolled onto your back, legs clenched together as his mess coated your thighs. While you listened to him wash his hands, you closed your eyes and wished desperately that you were pregnant. You thought about everything that would change for you if you were, and you knew you'd be ready for it.
"Coming?" he asked, reaching out for your hand. Bradley pulled you to your feet and helped you back into your underwear, looking up at you and shaking his head at the sight of his cum everywhere. He wasn't old. It blew your mind that he sometimes thought he was. He was better and sexier and stronger than anyone younger. He was everything you wanted.
"Let's go."
----------------------------
Bradley spent almost seven hundred dollars for the hotel room for the night. It was another fifty bucks to valet the Bronco, and the prices on the dinner menu in the swanky restaurant were so high, he thought they must be joking. But he wanted you to have whatever you wanted, so he ordered a twenty dollar beer so you would, too. And he ordered exactly what he wanted to eat so you would, too.
He'd tapped out his savings when he bought the craftsman for the two of you, including the money his mom left for him. But he'd been working on building up his savings again. The dream of making one of the bedrooms a nursery sometime in the near future was clawing away at his mind. He thought about it a lot: colorful airplanes and clouds on the walls and a crib with a sweet baby that had his hair and your eyes.
His attention was drawn back to the present as soon as the waiter returned with your beers and a platter of bread and fruit. The colorful overhead light was reflecting blue, green and orange onto your pretty face as you glanced up with a look of wonder at the waiter. Because he was now saying the words Bradley had been waiting weeks for you to hear. It was the reason he wanted to book a room as soon as he heard about this hotel.
"While you wait for your entrees, feel free to walk around and explore our wall of condiments from around the world, our champagne waterfall, and our hot sauce vending machine."
You lurched in your seat. "Did you say hot sauce vending machine?!"
"Yes," the waiter replied with a smile, nodding to the far end of the restaurant. "Have fun."
"Bradley!" you shrieked. "They have a hot sauce vending machine!"
He grinned as you pulled him to his feet. "I know, Baby Girl. That's why I brought you here."
You wrapped your hands around his neck and pulled him in for a kiss that was better suited for the bedroom, but Bradley didn't care that there was a couple trying to eat at the next table. You were happy right now when there were times recently that you clearly hadn't been, so they'd just have to deal.
Bradley eventually led you to the vending machine which was enormous and filled with tiny bottles of hundreds of different kinds of sauces. You stood before it in the colorful wonderland of a restaurant, analyzing each one like this was the most important work assignment of your career.
"That's one's from Japan," you mused out loud, pointing to a green bottle. "I've always wanted to try it. Oh, and that one is made in Maryland! We need to get that one."
"Pick as many as you want, Sweetheart. They come with the meal." You actually jumped up and down and clapped your hands as you pushed the buttons to select twenty two different hot sauces, loading Bradley's arms up with the little bottles one at a time.
Then you stopped at the champagne fountain and got two glasses to take back as well. The waiter brought your dinners and some extra plates for all of the hot sauces, and you lined them up across the table. "I think I'm in heaven," you said, dipping your fork into a sauce and tasting it.
Bradley watched you enjoy the flavor before dipping the fork again and holding it out to him. Your smile and the expectant look on your face as he tasted it made him happy, too. "I know I'm in heaven."

Heyy how are youu? Look what I saw on pintrest today! https://pin.it/W8tWU6Yns
Its soo science/techy nerd gaon!!! As a Liberal arts student who used to struggle sm with maths and science in school, the minute I found out jiseok was a science major AND built his own computer I fell for him 10x more (im easily swooned and imo people who are good in what I'm bad at are automatically hot). This also got me thinking of a lil college scenario (where I'm from college isnt university. Its where u might go after high school and before uni. By that point you've also reached age of consent just to make that super clear).
Anywayss imagine u and him are together, going to the same college but he's like in the Yr above or something. Your both top students, acing all your classes, but you're really struggling in science. Since that's jiseoks best subject u tell him about it and like the good bf he is, he offers to tutor you. So that's how u find yourself in your room on his lap as he teaches you the material. So far so good right? But thing is he starts to get a lil frustrated because even after explaining the concepts a few times your still not comprehending it even though he knows u can definitely figure it out coz ur his smart baby. But in your defence you wouldve probably grasped the content better if he didn't decide to make himself comfortable inside of you! You say that to him but he doesn't really like that response. He's trying to be a good bf and help save your grade and you're there giving him attitude like a brat. What's that all about?!
-🍭
oh cockwarming with science nerd gaon… i’m not in university anymore but here i am losing it over this vision
the way the sleeves of his shirt would be rolled up casually exposing his forearms, his veins; how his voice would drop lower and deeper when he’s reading something from your textbook - slowly, so you can comprehend its meaning but how can you? when he’s looking so attractive leaning back against the wall and running a hand through his hair as if it’s a normal study session… when he feels so nice twitching inside you every now and then as he talks about software engineering (or something i don’t know a thing abt science)
(i’m sorry the scenario automatically started playing in my head and i couldn’t not write it)
“babe?” he lifts a brow at you. “you’re zoning out again.”
“i’m not,” you try to defend yourself but it’s pointless. your breathing and your inability to stay still already betrays you. “i’m just… visualising it.”
“oh yeah?” he snickers, letting his fingers tighten at your waist. he knows that would make your reactions even better. “so you’re not trying to ride my cock? while i’m doing my best to save your grade?”
“baby, please… it’s been too long, i need you.”
but for your boyfriend it’s not enough. he wants to see you crumble some more.
“forget about my grades right now.” you murmur, grinding against him.
you get to do it just once because he’s quick to pause your attempts in time before his composure cracks. but you hear it - the suppressed moan that almost escaped his throat against his will.
“you need it just as bad as me,” you say coyly.
to which he responds with a frustrated tsk sound of his tongue.
“so this is what i get for being a good boyfriend? your spoiled bratty attitude, hm?” his hand cups your face so you can look him in the eye. “sit still and repeat everything i just said, baby.”

Could I ask about your personal headcanon as to what being a shikigami entails (both with regards to chores and your Lady’s admin privileges)?
(Please ignore my previous ask, if it bothers you.)
Hi! I assume the anonymous ask I got that was similarly worded was also yours, so I will reply to this one only, either way I'm happy to talk about my headcanon/scenario!
As for the previous ask, on my opinion of "Aka Yakumo", I don't know who that is. A cursory glance on the internet seems to show it's an OC from a fic?
As for what being a shikigami entails for me: in my self-insert scenario, shikigami work *slightly* different than most people usually portray them. Think of it more as a... Software update, or an additional part/software, as opposed to a full OS change. You remain the same *being*, but there Is Something New that was put in you, if that makes sense. It's like if you had an extra brain part put onto yours, I suppose.
Of course, this comes with the feature that it provides a very easy, convenient backdoor for your master (in my case Lady Yukari) to do mind control, emotional regulations, or give you "programming", which in this case I interpret as basically putting a strong instinct/compulsion to follow a certain order or behaviour.
Now, I don't think Lady Yukari uses it often -- at least not in my scenario/headcanon. "Lower" shikigami may have more programming into them to make sure they're reliable and doing what she wants them to do, but trusted ones like Ran or me don't need much of that, so the backdoor isn't really used that much. It's better to have a servant that trusts you and uses their full, independent mind rather than robots (and I also believe Lady Yukari prefers to have independent shikigami and sees value in individuality). Plus there's no need for mind control in my case as I'd do almost anything for her.
I also think becoming a shikigami is not a quick and easy procedure, but a longer process, at the very least for me. It takes several years, and includes a process of 'inner alchemy' through meditation, self-improvement, and Onmyodo. A couple of reasons for this is that 1. I am a human, and therefore becoming a shikigami is different and needs an inner transformation, and 2. Lady Yukari wants to preserve me and my personality, individuality, as much as possible, and just putting a shikigami software in my head in an instant would probably cause severe damage.
The other reason is, for me, this is a comfort scenario about, among other things, being allowed to find and become my true, inner self, and be comfortable and true and belong as a Yakumo. So it's just as much, if not more, therapy about being the person I Want To Be and Am Inside as it is magic shenanigans.
That also leads to the fact that, over the course of the shikigami-fication process, I become more and more a youkai, until eventually I become a full one.
As for the other question, well, it's fairly simple - at the beginning, my chores remain pretty simple. Cleaning, cooking, the occasional errand. But as I improve and the shikigami process keeps going - and more importantly, I get closer to Lady Yukari and gain more and more of her trust and affection, I have more complex chores. So while in the first few months I may have only been tasked with say, go and purchase some fresh groceries, a couple years later I may be asked to go and deliver a letter to Lady Kanako, for example.
There's other """chores""" that just come from being closer to her like being her drinking partner, brushing her hair and helping her dress, or being a bedwarmer when she needs to sleep and wants some human warmth. But those are, not really chores, and they don't feel like a chore at all. dhshsbs.
Overall, it's a nice and sweet life! The shikigami backdoor isn't used unless it's for purposes of emotional maintenance (because of trauma or mental illness) or 'spiritual' maintenance (making sure the human>youkai process goes well and safely). I'm still the same being, and guided to becoming my true, inner self, under her care and attention - and I get to be a useful, happy, fulfilled servant, loving my Lady and being loved by Her.
Hope this was a good read and answered your questions!~
(Fun extra fact: the Hexagram on my tabard means "Inner Truth". Pretty fitting, eh?)

Hello. I don't even know why I send this message, but I think I need to say it to someone and I would love to have a feedback on my situation. Because of the massive Hollywood strike 2 years ago, i've lost my job and haven't been able to find a new one in my industry since. I have to start a formation to learn a new software but everytime I try to, I feel depressed. What's the point if I can't find a job anyway. I feel depressed and worthless and I just am tired with always fighting. i feel like a failure on a daily basis and what's triggering me even more is to see all my friends in the same situation as me being able to move on with their lives while I'm stuck trying to function one day after the other. What should I do? on a side I can try to get that skill with this software even if it's worth nothing. on the other I move on with a job i'm not happy with for the rest of my life. In both ways it's only darkness at the end of the tunnel and I'm afraid I won't ever see the light of being happy to go to work ever again... You don't have to answer if you don't feel confortable with it, I just had to say it to someone and I love your content. I saw a long time ago that someone already did this kind of thing and I just thought that it was worth the shot to get this weight off my chest. Sorry.
To start off, I am so sorry you’re feeling this way. I know how hard it can be to be in this mindset and to feel how you’re feeling about yourself, your career, and life. I can understand wanting to remain anonymous but if you need to talk, you can message me any time.
I am not qualified to give advice but I would say to learn the software. It never hurts to add something to your resume. I’m not sure what your job was but are there other companies you could try applying to? Other fields or areas you are also qualified to work in that you could try? Keep working the “babd job” because not working adds more stress but if you hate it, don’t accept that as the endgame. Keep looking for other work, keep building your resume and your skills. Don’t settle. The shift may not happen overnight but it will happen. Doors start to open, curtains get drawn and light starts to come back in.
It’s so hard not to compare yourself to others, especially friends but you have to keep reminding yourself that you’re your own person on your own path doing your own things. The time you spend comparing yourself should be spent focusing on yourself and what you can do to help yourself or doing something you enjoy. The waiting game is so frustrating, I get that, but I do believe that better days will come for you, just please don’t give up on it.
This is probably the worst thing you have ever heard but I used to think of this when I was at my low and repeat it to myself when I would start getting in my head and comparing myself. They may have gotten on the 6am flight to Mexico and you’re bummed watching them take off and knowing they’re getting to their destination before you take off but remember that you’re still getting on your own flight. It’s at 6pm but you’re still getting on. You have to wait but you’re still getting on. The journey might be a little longer but once you touch down in Italy you’re going to have amazing adventures. It’s a work in progress but I hope you still get the point. Some people may have a shorter journey and reach their success or destination before you but that doesn’t mean you wont. Everyone has their own path and their own experiences to live, learn, and grow from. Don’t leave the airport just because your plane isn’t here yet. Keep your head up, keep working to better things and do things that make you happy. Even the little things because they’re way more important than we give them credit for ❤️

Hello! I absolutely love BABA, it is everything I need in a comfort media, especially during exam season. Do you have any advice for people looking into writing podcasts? Like audio editing programs or writing tips or anything else that's come up in your process? If you do, thanks so much! But regardless, I adore this podcast and I hope you're having a wonderful day!
hello! thank you so much for listening, and I really really hope your exams go well <<33
My writing advice is the kind that I feel like deserves to get me shook, but it's the truest I know --- write a lot, write every day or as often as you can manage it, write like it is the thing that you must do to keep you alive. Write like it's at the top of your to-do list, write knowing that as long as you write something that day, whatever else happens, it can be enough. Choose a word count and try to reach it every day. Choose a duration of time and make sure you set it aside. Just --- write. Note the things that are important to you and mean the most to you, and you'll never run out of ways to talk about them.
When I am drafting, I aim for 500 words a day (but please god find what works for you don't take this as anything other than an example.) Sometimes I kick and scream to that point and don't go any further. Oftentimes, after 500, the words are loose enough that I can keep going. Stack 'em up. The more you have, the less each one matters. The longer you get into the habit of hitting a word count, the easier it is to do!!
From the podcasting side of things, I have no idea what I'm doing, ever, which means that I am NOT the best person to get good advice from, but I CAN tell you how to duct-tape a podcast together. My tips---
Take the time to learn how to use Audacity (or whatever audio editing software you'd like -- audacity is just FREE, we LOVE) get yourself a mic that fits in your budget (my blue yeti has been going solid for years and years and has survived several moves!), and get talkin'.
Likewise, take your time editing. Get a sense of how much you can reasonably do between episodes, and don't overwork yourself. It's better to have a consistent schedule for releases than a sporadic one, even if that means episodes are farther apart :) BABA comes out twice a month and I could not consistently do any more without losing my mind. Maybe that's not the case for you, but figure it out!!
Uh --- I use Anchor, which is now "Spotify for Podcasters," because, again, it's free. Freemusicarchive.org is where BABA's theme music (Nightingales by Pierce Murphy) comes from, and just do some googling about what each attribution right means so you're respecting people's wishes.
I also cannot recommend enough writing the whole season before you start recording. Editing and recording and editing episodes is enough every two weeks -- I couldn't imagine also having to write the episode on top of that :')
(But again -- maybe you're different!! Maybe it's no problem for you! The biggest thing is figuring out how you can stretch and how you cannot and adapting.)
But I think the biggest thing is having a story that you want to tell and that excites you, if no one else. It's going to be a lot of talking to yourself in empty rooms and listening to yourself through headphones and the only way to get through is to love something about it :')
I finally must encourage you to take all of this with a grain of salt, as I'm just Some Guy with no real qualifications except that I snuck in the back door and no one kicked me out fast enough. But that is the glorious thing about audio drama!!! Anyone can make anything!!!
Good luck, good luck, and always reach back out if there's something more substantial I can help you with :)
Very best, always,
Abigail <3

Sorry if I bother you, but I really love your gif sets! Do you know some tutorials or, app, or anything, to learn how to make good gif? I am learning and I feel very stupid because all my gifs are shit. (if my ask is inappropriate or anything, please ignore me)
you're not bothering and none of this is inappropriate, you're more than welcome in my inbox! as for your questions, let's see what i can do.
1) tutorials — i've been doing this for long enough that i don't really have much to recommend here, the only tutorials i use nowadays are all about specific things and not how to make gifs as a whole. that being said i've linked this one before, i personally do some things differently but it's a very good tutorial, well-received by gifmakers who are just starting and well written, from what i've skimmed through.
another good post to look through is this one, not a gifmaking tutorial per se but it goes into sizes, sharpening, and how to get neat & clear gifs. two of the main points are A) while you can get away with making gifs out of a 720p quality video, 1080p is what is usually recommended. you could use 4k as well, but a 1080p video is usually easier to find, will take less space in your storage, and will give you really good results already. no need for overkill <3 as for B) size matters here on tumblr dot com, mostly width. the op of the post linked in this paragraph has included a nice graphic for the size limits for gifs, you can refer to it as you make your gifs so that whatever you make won't turn out pixelated once you upload it to tumblr.
if you're curious, i've been asked about my sharpening settings here and i spoke before on tumblr sizing here
2) software — you mentioned app, if by app you mean mobile stuff then i'm sorry, i can't help you! i've never made gifs through mobile and i wouldn't even know which direction to point towards for you to find more information. as for computers, if you mean programs then these are what i use to make my gifs: potplayer (for taking screencaps) and photoshop cc 2020 (for making the actual gifs, this is the post i used but here's one with more links)
now i'd like to mention something my grandma always used to say: no one is born learned. you're not stupid just because it's taking you a while to do something, learning is a process and everyone has their own pace. i've been making gifs for a decade now and i know there are things i could do better! i'm also still learning, i make plenty of "shit" gifs before stumbling my way to something i am okay with posting, and sometimes i'm really proud of what i've made and other times i think it's just "good enough". i understand feeling disheartened but please do not feel stupid about any of this!
no use in putting yourself down, now hold my hand and let's add the finishing touches on this long ass reply <3
3) tips — we've mentioned video quality, sharpening, and sizing. what else, what else. personally i would start simple (and i did, way back when, and still do!! most of my gifs are quite simple). so: cropping/resizing + coloring + sharpening. it'll help get the basics down and then you'll have a good foundation for everything else you might want to learn. i mentioned in another ask, almost two years ago now lmao, that i used to download other people's free psds (that is, pre-made settings and layers to color your gifs) and instead of using them i would open them up and pick them apart to see how people were coloring things, which layers they used, in which order, stuff like that.
remember: there is no right or wrong to do this! you could ask ten different people how they make their gifs, and their preferences for any specific part of the process, and you'd get ten different answers. if you find a tutorial and don't vibe with it, throw that aside and look for another. pick and choose, find what works for you and what doesn't! and that means do not be afraid to experiment and try things out.
also, don't like photoshop? no problem! i started with gimp, now personally i wouldn't recommend it over ps but it's a good program, it taught me a lot, and there's really nothing to hate about it. it might have less functions than ps though, and already a decade ago there weren't that many tutorials/resources for it.
don't like photoshop AND don't want to download a program? try photopea, i haven't used it but it works directly from your browser and it should do everything photoshop does!
let me know if there's anything else i can help with <3

Any advice for someone practicing scripts for voice acting and still stumbling and stuttering after a good amount of run throughs?
I want to get clearer and be able to easily run scripts but I have a lot of anxiety even when I’m not trying to record or post it.
-💛
First of all, here's a hug. 🤗
Second of all, this is tough. I think there is some element of anxiety for every creative artist out there. No matter how long they've been doing it or how brilliant their work is. There is something that makes us anxious and we have to learn how to deal with it. Sometimes it's multiple things.
In this case, I think the trick is figuring out what makes you anxious about voice acting. What is it you're worried about?
(please don't let any of this make you anxious - I'm trying to bring up some of the more common things, and things I myself have dealt with)
Is it a fear that others won't like your voice? Or the script?
That you're going to mispronounce something? Or have an accent?
Do you have a natural stutter or stammer? (a friend of mine is an excellent actor, and he's stuttered his whole life; he found ways to work with it, so this doesn't have to be a deal breaker)
That you aren't good enough? (and OH BOY - that one gets all of us tripped up at some point, and often more than once.)
Is there a concern about recording in general?
A worry about your space and how it sounds?
That your set up could be better? Different mic, different software, etc.? (I know VAs who record on phones, tablets, and computers. You can figure it out and make it work.)
Is it a general fear of putting our voice work out there?
Is this something new to you and you've wanted to try it, but now you're not sure about it?
Are you putting pressure on yourself to be letter perfect, or perfect in general?
It could also be general performance anxiety, which can be difficult to push through sometimes. I still deal with that, especially with characters that aren't my own.
Remember that you as the actor are playing a character. Try to find the character first, then run the lines. Let the character speak through you, basically.
One thing that my college theater professor told me was that you're letting the character borrow your body for a while. For example: the audience isn't laughing at *you*, they are laughing at the character. When you walk out on stage, they see the character you're playing, not you.
(for context: I was struggling with playing a very comedic character, because I'd been bullied and teased since grade school; so people laughing at me was my normal. But it wasn't me they saw on stage. They saw the character I was playing. That's one of the best pieces of advice I've received in my career, and thinking in those terms has served me well - even for dramatic roles.)
I think you may be overthinking something, or more than one thing. As a professional overthinker, I get it. 🤓 Try to figure out *what* makes you anxious, and go from there.
And remember that every single voice actor out there started at the same place - zero. We have to learn and grow and develop our skills - and learn how to deal with our anxieties and other stumbling blocks that get in the way. No one started off being amazing at what they do. Not even your favorite VAs and ASMRists. (I know, "sacrilege!" I'm pretty sure they would agree, though. 🙂)
I hope this is helpful, at least a little. Be patient with yourself and the process, and give yourself grace when you need it. Figure out what makes you anxious, and then figure out how to punch it in the face. 😎

🛠🍷🥰
Wow, that's a huge glass of wine! Thank you (for the ask, not for the drink lol)!
(But also, thank you for the drink.)
🍷 Do you drink and write?
Usually not, but sometimes it's fun. There's this very particular type of creativity only red wine can unlock. Other drinks only make me sleepy, not creative.
Always edit sober, though! :D
🥰 How do you feel about reader interaction? Are you open to receiving questions about your fics?
Y E S! My comments on AO3 are unrestricted on all fics, please go ahead and ask whatever you want to know about any of them. I'm not looking for constructive criticism, though. (But if you find a typo or a punctuation fail, please do let me know lol. It shouldn't happen with multiple layers of spell and grammar checkers, but sometimes I add something last second before hitting "publish", and sometimes my brain is not braining while I do so.)
🛠 What tools/programs/apps do you use to write?
Sit down and enjoy that glass of wine, this'll take a while... xD
For spontaneous short fics (and for plot bunnies that came out of nowhere), I use Google Docs. It's great because it auto-saves, and I can access my docs on any device.
Then I have Scrivener for fics that require a bit more planning or are more than just one scene.
I made different templates for the different kind of fics I usually write (and should I ever feel like I'm 100% happy with my ever-evolving templates, I'll happily share them!); and it's perfect to organise and keep all plot bunnies in check.
How was I ever able to live without the Corkboard and without being able to shuffle scenes and around like index cards? I love this fucking Corkboard, I love the binder, I love that I have a template that groups all "Save the Cat!" plot beats into the three acts of the three-act structure. And my god, do I love that I'm also able to customise the theme of my Scrivener and turn it into a pastel rainbow. Absolute eye candy! <3
I very recently treated myself to Scrivener for iOS, and I'm so happy that I did! Again, Google Docs is great for some quick note-taking, but being able to add a new index card to my WIP's Corkboard wherever I am? Priceless!
For mind maps, I use Scapple. It's from the same company that makes Scrivener, Literature & Latte. Good to organise thoughts, not necessarily a must-have. There are free mind map tools out there. I just want to support Literature & Latte.
I also use voice-to-text, because that's something that really helps me whenever I feel like I can't write. The words are there, the stories are there, but I can't fucking write them down for whatever reason.
After experimenting with different free options (let me know if you're interested in my thoughts on them and which I would recommend), I settled for Nuance Dragon Professional 16, the best dictation software on the market, but also fucking expensive. I don't regret this. It's probably overkill if you're only using it for fanfic.
I don't use the mobile version, Dragon Anywhere, because it's a subscription based service now, and fuck that. It's probably really awesome and all, but I am not paying €150 per year for this.
So, to save money, I use my €1,000 dictation software with the free dictation app ALON Dictaphone to dictate chapters or scenes on my phone. There are probably better apps out there, but I've been using this one for more than ten years and I like it. You can organise your voice notes with labels, so you always know which fic they belong to. It also synchs with all cloud services out there (I use it with my free Dropbox), and I can access the files on my laptop when I need them. Dragon 16 can transcribe these files without playing them, which is really nice, because a) I don't have to listen to my own voice and b) I can do something else on my laptop and don't have to stay quiet while it's transcribing.
For spelling and grammar, I use LanguageTool. The free plan offers all I need, and it integrates with Google Docs and my browser. The best thing about it is that you can choose which English accent to write in, and it will tell you if an expression you used belongs to a different accent and offer you an alternative.
For a quick final edit, I use ProWritingAid and Hemingway Editor. I like that you can choose the genre in PWA. I dismiss a lot of their suggestions, though. There's a reason I chose passive voice for this one sentence, dammit! xD
AutoCrit also offers interesting editing tools. I'll give it a go at one point, but for now I've only played around with the example text a little.
So, yeah. That's basically it, I think.

hi! I just saw your reblog on the rarbg post with the magnet links, and I'm kinda new to this and I was wondering if you could explain what I would copy and paste from that mass of text the links lead me to, as well as what torrent downloader you'd recommend. Thank you if you can help!
yeah, no problem! so the links I put, as labeled, are either for movies or tv shows depending on what you want to download, and they're all sorted alphabetically (with numbers only on the very top!)
A magnet link is basically a link tracing each torrent's metadata which has the links to the files you want to download from that specific torrent, and when you load it up it'll connect to other people (seeds/peers) with that file to download from.
Each link for a torrent begins with magnet:?xt=urn:btih: followed by its info hash code made of random numbers and letters (each torrent file has a different randomized hash - it's what helps set them apart) and then the file's name (eg the movie in this case) and it's quality (720p, 1080p, etc. and H264 or x265, etc.) - you can find the specific torrent with a link bc it has that torrent's unique hash code, and so it traces the files connected to that code.
So for example, I'll download the torrent for Dune 2021 here, starting from the part that begins with magnet:
Tumblr media
I select and copy the magnet link for Dune 2021 - in this case I'm going for the 1080p and H264 one - now remember, the better (higher) the resolution, the larger the file will be - and also, for the H264 and x265, those are video compression codecs - x265 compresses better than H264, meaning it takes up less storage overall, but uses more processing power and can have some compatibility issues compared to H264 which it will need a special application/program for depending on your software.
So I paste the link into my torrenter - all torrent software usually has something like "upload torrent file" and "paste torrent magnet link" icons - in my case I'm using qbittorent, here's a screenshot of the icon for link paste and how it looks:
Tumblr media
You can put multiple links at a time as long as each is in its own line after (no two links in the same line) - then just click download and the torrenter will begin tracing from the torrent hash to load its associated metadata and files for you to download from other peers. This might take from a few seconds to several minutes to load, but just give it time if it does take a while. Or close and open it another time if it's taking too long.
Now this is very important - when you finish retrieving the metadata from the link I know you're just itching to click the "Ok" button and start downloading, but right before that see the button that says "save as .torrent file"? I want you to click that and save the torrent file to your computer (anywhere's fine, but you should save it in the same place you download the torrent files to - in my case, I save it to my downloads (lol))
Tumblr media
You should save the torrent file so that it has all the file metadata so that a) you don't have to recopy and paste the magnet link to redownload the metadata all over again, b) have the metadata saved for access at any time - if you want to redownload the files, share it with another person more easily, etc, and c) so you can automatically re-seed its files afterwards if you want (i'll explain this in a second)
After that you can click "ok" and download the torrent normally, which again might take time depending on how many seeds there are and the strength of either end of the internet connection.
If you manage to fully download everything from a torrent and reach 100% please don't be a leech and remove the torrent from your downloader, instead keep it open so you can seed it back out to other people who want to download it afterwards. This is how we keep the whole torrent web alive!!! And if you do have to remove it later, for storage or whatever reason, I would recommend you keep the files and torrent file saved somewhere else like an external disk so that when you have space again, you can move the files back and re-seed it to others by reopening it with the torrent file (if you open a torrent file for something you already have on your computer, it'll check and see you already have it and automatically start seeding!)
Also, if you want to save the page of magnet links, you can right-click on it and have it saved as a text file offline in case anything happens to the web link - I've already done that just to make sure I can keep it off-hand even if something happens to it online (if the link goes offline for whatever reason and you don't have it saved, you can message me and i'll send you the text files with all the magnet links)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for torrent downloaders, I personally use qbittorrent downloaded to my disk/applications - in my case it's been pretty reliable downloading and seeding wise, out of all the torrenters I've used so far - I would recommend that.
Oh this turned out to be a lot longer than I expected lol, well I hope it was helpful at least tho! If you have any more questions don't hesitate to message me~! And good luck!

Daily Blogs 356 - Oct 26th, 12.024 Being someone who actually codes and is a software engineer, please learn how to code.
Why?
Before anything else, it is fun, even more if you like puzzles and solve problems, and you could find your future career even.
Nonetheless, coding is an enormous skill to have nowadays with every little job, task, and even hobby, having some sort of technology or another. How many times have you wanted to rename a bunch of files into a more structured form? Or even wanted to have a fast way to see all your tasks for the day? Maybe you are animating in After Effects (unfortunately) and want to make an object pulse following a song beat? Or maybe in your job you have to make spreadsheets in Excel (again, unfortunately) and need something more dynamic? Or maybe, you want to have your own simple website? All of these things can be done, and can be easier, knowing a little bit of coding/scripting.
Coding not only lets you do things in a faster way, it also helps you better understand the technology you use. Did you never think how the little applications that you use are made? Because they are, by humans, like me and you, and that's why they have bugs most of the time. Maybe learning to code, you can even start modding your favorite game! Or even create your own.
But Coding is Hard!
I'm going to be honest, yes, it can be hard. But we aren't talking about doing whole software products or even what could be called engineering, we are talking about scripting/coding, which is just creating files for some utilities, which is far from hard. And instead of trying to explain, let me show you some examples.
Creating a Website Yes, you heard me right, the first example is how to create a website, because you can do it in literally just a file:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"But it is ugly!", well, just modify a little the first file, and add another file!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there it is! Your own website. Now to put it into the internet to everyone to see it is nothing more than uploading these two files to a Web Hosting Service, which most of the simple ones are free! A few examples are GitHub Pages, Vercel, Netlify, all of them you can find easy tutorials to upload your files and have them for the web!
What Are Those Files?
Glad you asked! Let's go step by step.
The first file, the one full of <tags\/>, is what is called an HTML file. HTML (or Hypertext Markup Language) is the language used by all websites you visit, it is designed to structure text in such a way that you can easily put meaning and style into the document, and have you browser read it to show you. These files are marked up using tags, which encapsulate text with an opening tag (like this one <p>) and a closing tag (like this one </p>, see the slash before the letter P), looking like this <p>Hello world</p>. We have multiple types of tags, such as <p> for Paragraphs, <h1> for Heading/titles, <h2> for subheadings/subtitles, <link> for linking one file to another, <ul> for an Unsorted List, which will have <li> for each List Item, <main> for informing what's the main content, <a> for an Anchor/hyperlink for another website, etc. etc. All HTML files will have an <html> encapsulating everything, a <head> tag for information about the page, and a <body> tag for the content of the page. That's pretty much how HTML works, and all you need is to learn what tag does what, and you're pretty much good to go.
In the second file, we just add some structure to it better, adding a <main> tag and a <div> tag with the ID "background", so the third file, the stylesheet, can make it look pretty! The third file, the one with the {} blocks, is a CSS (or Cascading Style Sheets) file, and it is the one that makes all of our websites beautiful. It is made by these "blocks" of code that applies styles for multiple elements in the page, it is a little bit more hard to explain, but in summary, that file does this:
The "#background" block applies styles to any tag with ID "background". In the example, we make the tag have 100% of the view width (width: 100vw) and 100% of the view height (height: 100vh); make the background be an Unsplash image; decrease the opacity, so the image is not so bright; apply a blur filter; and make its position be absolute in the top left corner, so it doesn't move with the rest of the content;
The "body" block applies styles to the tag and makes it display its content on a flexible layout (display: flex), which we use to make the content be centralized in the page;
We then make the text-color inside the tag white, use a sans font, and make it be in front (z-index: 2) of the tag (see the z-index: 1 in the "#background" block);
And to finish off, we make the color of links an aqua color.
That's pretty much it and pretty much how the fundamentals of how to create a website works. Just 2 files of code, and you can have your own website.
But Where Are the Loops? Where Are the "if"s?
Yes, yes, if you know the concept of coding, you may be asking where are all the loops, "if"s, and variables. Truth be told is that HTML and CSS aren't programming language per-say, they are markup languages to structure and display text, so they can't run anything really. However, they are easy to understand and are considered "code" nonetheless, and personally I find fascinating that websites, the thing we all access every single day, that most people I know think is magic… are based in two simple languages that anyone can learn in an afternoon and have its own website up and running in less than a day.
I Want real code!
Ok ok! Let's so add a little interactivity into our website. What about a little character you can control? Yes, a little game character to control with WASD on your website, with less than 40 lines of code. Let's first update the HTML file so we can add the character:
Tumblr media
As you can see in the new file, we just added another <div> tag on the website, with the ID "player" and a <img> tag which we can use to add a visual sprite to our character! I'm using this simple sprite/gif I found on OpenGameArt.org. Also, in the new <div> we add some CSS styling directly in the tag, using the style attribute, the reason to this being that here we can manipulate its value with a programming language, in the case of the web, JavaScript. We add the JavaScript file with a <script> tag.
And in the JavaScript file, we can write this simple script:
Tumblr media
This can be a little overwhelming, but let's go line by line:
First, we get the player element/tag with document.querySelector("#player") (similar on how in CSS we would use #player {} to style the tag). This tag is then saved into a variable player, think of it like a box or alias for document.querySelector("#player"), so when we use something like player.setAttribute it can be thought like document.querySelector("#player").setAttribute;
After that, we use player.setAttribute("data-coordinate", JSON.stringify({ x: 40, y: 20 })). This is just so we can more easily access the coordinates of the player after. An attribute is like that style in the tag, so calling this is like we wrote in the HTML file;
We again call player.setAttribute, but this time to rewrite the value of the style attribute, just to be sure. See how in the text for the style tag (the 2nd argument, aka the left: ${45}%; bottom:${20}%; ...), we use ${}? Well, this is a neat feature that lets us put values inside the text, so it makes the final result be left: 40%; bottom 20% ..., in this line it seems a little redundant, but in later in the lines we will use it more cleverly. Just remember that if we make a variable, a "box", like let x = 10 and use it inside the text like left: ${x}%, it would be in the end left: 10%;
Now the meat of the script, the "onKeyDown" function. A "function" in programming is like a piece of code you can reuse, and pass variables to it to use inside the code, like a box you can put stuff inside to it to do things, a box that uses other boxes, a box inception. Inside the "onKeyDown" function, we take back the value inside that data-coordinates attribute we wrote on the 3rd line, and put it inside the coordinates variable; than, we check if the key pressed is "d", if so, we add 1 to the X coordinate, we are changing the value of coordinate.x; we check for the other keys like "a", "w" and "s", changing the according variable to it; and then, we rewrite both the style attribute and data-coordinates attribute with the new value;
And finally, we use document.addEventListener("keydown", onKeyDown) to tell the browser "hey! Use this function ("onKeyDown") when a key is pressed!".
And that's pretty much it.
Tumblr media
As you can see in the top right corner, the values of the style and data-coordinate attribute change when we press a key!
If you want to access this simple website, this is the live version of it hosted on GitHub Pages and the source-code is available under the public domain.
Learning More
Being honest, what I showed here is just a very small toy project, and a lot is simplified because of the gigantic convenience that the browser provides nowadays. But again, this is the type of thing you can do with just a little bit of knowledge on how to code, probably the scripts you will do can be even simpler than this. And just imagine the things you can invent, learning a little bit more!
Besides the toy project, code can be used in a lot of fields:
If you work on data or science in general, coding in Python is a great skill to have on your toolkit, and it is very easy to learn. It works great with creating graphs and can even be used inside Excel for creating more dynamic spreadsheets;
Do you want to make games? Well, learn something like Lua, a very simple language and one of my favorites for scripting, and powerful enough to be chosen by engines like Roblox Studio (which surprisingly is powerful than I thought). But if Roblox is not your taste, well, learn something like GDScript, the language of the Godot game engine, fully free, fully open;
Also, Lua is used for modding on games such as Factorio, and can be very powerful for small scripts for your computer;
If you want to make websites, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, learn them and go nuts (I won't recommend you use any framework as other programmers use, learn the fundamentals first). There are a lot of documentation about the web, and it is one of the fields with the lowest entry;
Are you an 3D Artist? Well then, Python is also the language used for creating add-ons, you can take some time to learn and create your owns to help your workflow!
And if you are a poor soul who is using Adobe products, first: my condolences; second, most Adobe products use ActionScript to create dynamic animations and values such as making an element react to music beats in After Effects.

FMP: Progress So Far
My Final Major Project is finally complete! I'll link the final videos on my YouTube channel in another post so they're all easily accessible.
To reflect on the project now it's done, I'm very pleased overall with how it's turned out. The cinematic especially is very close to what I'd visualised at the start of the project. The gameplay isn't quite how I'd like it to go if I continue this in the future but that's mostly due to limitations in my own knowledge and down to wanting to get something interactable that makes sense in the short amount of gameplay that I wanted to show.
I managed to complete all of the "deliverables" that I'd promised at the start of the project in terms of the 3D models I planned out. I also this I've mostly aimed the project towards my target audience. The timeline I'd planned worked well and I was able to keep to schedule and even was a bit ahead a few times.
For my own personal learning outcomes these were the main things I wanted to improve and gain more confidence in. Substance Painter was fairly broad as I’d never really touched it before as I mentioned earlier, but I found that after watching a few tutorials and then having a go it was quite intuitive to pick up. I already had a good foundation of texturing in blender and how to layer textures and use masks etc so it was mostly about transferring to a different software that was the struggle rather than the actual principles of it.
Using trim sheets and atlases was probably the thing I was most apprehensive about, as I had never used them and was a bit daunted by how to plan them out. It took me quite a lot of trial and error with the trim sheets to get to a point where I was happy with the layout for this project but now that I’ve done it successfully here I’ve found it a lot easier to plan out and adapt to changes for other attempts.
Project planning was something I really wanted to work on as I had a tendency to just jump in without really thinking about how much time and effort something would take. Once I’d made the plan I did find it really helpful to refer to, to make sure I was on track for time and didn’t forget any key elements that I’d initially wanted to include. I did fall into my old trap of deciding to add in extras kind of last minute which I’m trying to avoid, so that’s something I need to take forward and work on still.
And finally, asset optimisation. This is something I feel is quite hard to quantify if I’ve improved or not. I tried to make everything with as little “wastage” as possible in terms of extra polygons or blank texture space and it’s definitely helped me get into the mind-set of modelling for a game rather than just to make something that looks nice. I think I’d still find it useful to get more practice on this because there’s not really a right or wrong way of optimising things so I’m still a little underconfident that I’m doing it in the most efficient way or to the fullest extent that I can.
The 2 main things I would want to improve upon if I had time right now would firstly be the bathroom. I didn't plan for it initially and it was a decision I made to add it in fairly late on once I'd already done most of the modelling so it was quite rushed. I added it because I felt that the environment in the gameplay needed the extra little room and I wanted to try and incorporate a mirror. I would have liked to make the models and textures better in this area as I feel it doesn't reflect the quality elsewhere.
The second thing I’d want to improve upon if I were to redo this would be to try and stick closer to the aesthetic of the concept art, as that was what really inspired me and drew me in. Part of the reason why I deviated was because I had quite a clear idea of the how I wanted the short film to go in terms of shots and that didn’t quite work with the layout. Also because of the story I wanted to convey again I felt like I should make some adjustments in terms of colour and the implied materials and wear and tear of the concept art. I’d like to redo this but make it way more run down and almost to the point of full disrepair rather than the fairly new-looking environment I ended up with.

Hello🫶👋🤝😢,
I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. I'm reaching out on behalf of Bilal, who is currently in Gaza facing severe bombardment along with his family. Please💔🙏 consider supporting by sharing his page or donating through the GoFundMe account. You can find more💔💌💌🥹🥹 information on my profile.
"You'll never know how strong you are until strength is your only option." From the heart of Gaza, these words become more true than ever. I am Bilal Abed Rabou, and I stand before you as a survivor of five wars, an academic student at Al-Azhar University and a software developer from the besieged Gaza Strip. I witnessed the devastating effects of these conditions firsthand. We were a family, living in peace, love and warmth. But everything changed when conflict and despair swept through our lives. Living in Gaza means confronting ongoing conflict, struggling against poverty and the lack of basic necessities to live. Life is very difficult, and even the simplest tasks seem impossible. Yet, despite all the chaos and pain, we remained grounded by the warmth of our love and the strength of our spirits. Even six months ago, everything changed. Our once home turned into a mess and everything we cherished. Since then, we have been lost, clinging to a world of uncertainty and despair. We left our badly damaged home with only a few things. Since then, our lives have been threatened with every passing minute.
But now, there is no longer a reason to stay in this place full of suffering, where we are deprived of even the most basic and important rights, education, security and peace. Our hearts hurt because of all this injustice. We were willing to endure anything to keep our family together and provide comfort and care for our father in his time of need. With each passing day, our despair grows and our burdens grow heavier. We need your help to break the cycle of suffering, rebuild our shattered dreams, pave the way to a better future, and reunite with our family. Your support is not just a lifeline; Rather, it is a beacon of hope in our darkest moments. How can you help? By facilitating our departure from Gaza. We plan to leave for Egypt and then search for a country to continue my educational journey. With your help, we can cover the costs associated with evacuation fees, transportation to the Rafah crossing, and other necessary expenses. Your donation will make a difference in our journey towards safety and a fresh start. Together, we can turn our hopes into reality and embark on a path toward a better tomorrow. Together, we can realize our dreams of escaping into reality, and chart a path toward a brighter tomorrow - full of hope, love, and the simple joy of life. As a token of our gratitude for your support, we've designed a tiered rewards system to show our thanks for your generosity. Each degree offers unique benefits designed to express our sincere thanks and recognition of the impact of your contribution. Your support is invaluable in helping us achieve our goals. Tiered reward system: First Degree: Supporter (any amount)
Become a valued supporter of our campaign and receive a thank you email expressing our gratitude for your generous support. Second level: Contributor ($100 - $500) You will receive a virtual thank you card with a personal message expressing our appreciation for your contribution. Third level: Sponsor ($500 - $1000) Your name will be included in the recognition list in our campaign updates, recognizing your important contribution Level 4: Guardian Angel (>$1000) Become a guardian angel for our campaign and receive a personal video message expressing our deepest thanks for your generous donation. For those wanting to contribute, here's how your donation will make a difference: Evacuation/Egyptian coordination fees: $5,000 per person for a total of $15,000 (3 people). Transfer to the Rafah crossing: $1,000, with an additional $500 allocated for the challenging conditions in Gaza. Tuition fees: from 20,000 to 30,000 dollars Platform fee: $500, approximately 2.9% of each donation. Thank you for considering supporting our journey..

If there's any other way I can be of "use" to you please let me know, I wasn't aware that was the reason you were still talking to me, I thought we were friends. Thanks for spelling it out for me loud and clear this morning.Lmao. I thought you were kidding.
CLOWN
And one last thought for you, you said "I believe in actions blah blah blah" I am doing EXACTLY what I said I would, you're the one who couldn't wait and left. So you can watch me continue to do all the things I said I would and try and figure out another way to add.me to your shitty men list. You told me I was “adding so much stress to your life”. After getting loud with me and not respecting my request to get out of my car after I did my best to take be supportive in all the ways I could.
CLOWN
Once Luke sends you this next program it's on you to stay on top of him, you either want it or you don't, I'll keep paying but being your gym babysitter went out the window this morning No thank you
CLOWN
He's your trainer ask him or ask one of your boyfriends. I help my friends with stuff, not people who can "use" me for something. The fact that you think I can possibly use you for anything is ridiculous. Again I know you’ll be great, my mind hasn’t changed but the way you’re speaking to me is disrespectful.
CLOWN
Well then the feeling is mutual cause the way you were speaking to me also seemed pretty disrespectful. I'm not interested in being right, you win. You always win Angela. I never had any control in this from the jump.
I was just trying to help, you don't want it fine.
ME
You told me I was “adding so much stress to your life”. After getting loud with me and not respecting my request to get out of my car after I did my best to take be supportive in all the ways I could. Obviously a reason to cut and run, god forbid we worked it out. Sorry you couldn't handle my bottom while I was trying to uncover the right road for us. At the end of the day you also didn't hold up your end in WV, you didn't like it there and took the easiest way out, I don't blame you, but you definitely weren't "supportive in all ways" you cut and run when it wasn't what you dreamt up. I battled through it and am living a life we would've loved here. It is what it is. Sorry for the confusion, that "the one thing I could use you for," line really got me though
If you continue to bounce every time something doesn't work out the right way for you then you'll be alone and sad forever, I am an expert in that field. Take what you want from this conversation, but I think you got so upset cause there is a lot of truth in the things I said.
But maybe I'm just full of shit, either way, your seat remains in the front row, I understand now that it will always be empty though.
Tumblr media
This is quite laughable as if I wasn't the reason you & your dogs had food and transportation. I unfortunately ran out of funds to support your broke lifestyle and wasn't interested once I felt my safety was compromised. I remain neutral and communicate the errors in the messages you send me but you take no responsibility, nor apologize. Instead want to tell me why I'm wrong, and I was for choosing you. Against my better judgment I saw potential. Best of luck, I'm sure you'll make it to the top, or relapse and hit bottom. Either way you deserve it.

Respectfully, I have to disagree with everything in this post other than "don't use AI to write your fics", and here's why:
No beta reader: You don't need one. I am being 100% serious. Most fics in the fandoms I frequent are un-beta'd. Not having a beta doesn't mean your fic is going to suck. An algorithm is never going to give you the feedback you want, anyway, because it's not a real person.
Writing software makes mistakes: Yes. So will AI. Calling a program AI doesn't actually make it better at -- well, literally anything.
Check spelling: If you are questioning whether something is spelled correctly, there is a very easy way to check that already: start typing it into the search bar on your browser (if you have predictive text enabled) or into the search bar on dictionary.com. Either one will try to anticipate the word you want and finish it for you, thus telling you the correct spelling. I do this all the freaking time because spelling is not my strong suit and sometimes whatever program I'm typing in can't figure out what I want. However, when talking about discrepancies between different programs involving spelling, often times more than one spelling is correct, and each program has been programed to show one or the other (sometimes depending on the region a program originated from; for example, "gray" vs "grey" -- both are correct, but it depends on where you're from for which one will be given as the "correct" spelling).
Word repetition: You don't need AI to do something you can train yourself to do. You take it slow, you don't worry about the sentences themselves, and you ONLY look for repeat words. If you're really too lazy to do that (even though it will make you a better writer to do so), most software has a feature where you can highlight a paragraph or passage and search for all the places in that highlighted text where a word appears. You don't need to feed your writing to AI for this. It's already there.
Synonyms: No AI will every be as helpful to you in this regard as raw experience coupled with WordHippo. Raw experience tells you what words will still sound natural as replacements and when you need to completely rewrite a sentence to take out the duplicate word because nothing else works there. WordHippo gives you every alternate you could ever think of (plus ones you would never think of in a million years) sorted by how the word is being used. AI will only look at the word in question and give you a few alternatives, none of which may be what you want. AI can't tell you what still sounds natural. AI can't tell you when it's better to rewrite entirely.
Excessive adjectives/adverbs: Usually new writers have the exact opposite problem, in my experience, but either way, this is something you learn through experience. Once again, you can train yourself to look for too many -ly words. You can train yourself to look at your adjectives and figure out if there is a better one. When you start relying on AI for telling what descriptions are good or bad, you start slipping down that slope of saying "screw it" and letting the AI write for you (a little bit here, a little there, whatever the AI says makes this better).
Passive voice: See previous points. You can train your brain to see it, which will make you a better writer in the long run, as opposed to relying on a program to find it for you.
And so on: No, please; tell me more things in this category to use AI for that you can do yourself. Learning how to do these things through practice will make you a better writer; using AI will not.
Use it for research: I cannot even begin to tell you what a terrible idea this is. If you want to know whether something is canon or fanon, your best sources are wikipedia, a fan wiki, or posing it as a question on tumblr dot com. Yes, posting a question on here will STILL get you better results than trusting AI. AI has been known to scan fanfics and include that as "canon" in its results because it is a program. It cannot tell what is fanfic and what is from a legitimate source. It searches everything. Do not trust it to figure out if something is canon or not. (As a side note, does it even matter if it is? Your story isn't canon, so its okay if it isn't present in or even contradicts canon if its an idea you like! Write what you want to write!)
Credit ideas: You really...do not need to do this. Ideas aren't copyrighted. If you read a fic and that's where you got an idea and you want to shoutout the author, by all means! But two people who have never interacted could very easily form the same ideas or headcanons. One of my beloved mutuals made a post about one of my favorite headcanons once, a headcanon I had never shared with anyone ever. We had simply had the same idea. If you know the source already and want to give it, great! But you don't need to hunt down the source of an idea and credit it. (The original may no longer exist. There might be multiple "firsts". This is a pointless endeavor.)
Lack of ideas/ no friends :( :Yeah, I hear you. Not having anyone to talk to sucks. That's where I'm at with the fandom I'm currently writing for. Doesn't make AI the answer to your problems. As for ideas, there are already perfectly good prompt generators/ blogs on here that can help you with ideas. (As for bouncing concepts? Either get really good at talking to yourself, lol, or be willing to put yourself out there in different writing groups.)
Styles/ key elements of a genre: You can find that information on the million and one writing blogs that exist, both on here and on the greater internet. AI will most likely give you bad information. Go to the actual Lit Nerds who actually know what they are talking about. They will explain it much more thoroughly, to boot.
What it boils down to is this: just about every point you make for where AI is acceptable is an aspect of the creative process. You yourself said that "the process is way more rewarding" when you don't let AI write it for you. And you are right! The process of creating is it's own reward! However, where you get it wrong is that editing (which just about everything you mentioned is a part of) is part of the creative process, and doing it yourself (or with actual feedback from an actual person) is what helps make you into a better writer. It forces you to actually think about what you're writing and what you want to convey to your reader. You do that with the first draft, of course, but you refine it in editing. Learning where to use synonyms, how to get rid of repeat words by restructuring sentences, figuring out when less-is-more with descriptions -- all of those things are what make you a better writer.
AI makes you lazy. If I can have a program tell me everything that's wrong, why do I need to improve my writing skills? If it's bad, if I don't like it, AI will tell me how to fix it. If you never fix it yourself, you never learn. Don't use AI for things you can do yourself.
In all of this, I haven't even gotten to the biggest reason you shouldn't use AI: AI is built on theft. Most (if not all, let's be real, but at the very least everything out there for free) AI geared towards writing has been trained by scraping existing writing, fanfiction and otherwise, available digitally and feeding it to their program. This is done without the consent of the author. And since, yes, you do, in fact, retain your intellectual rights to your fanfiction, that does make this theft, plain and simple. (You may not have a formal copyright, but it is [currently] protected by fair-use laws regardless [in the USA, at any rate]). When you use AI for any part of the writing process, you are stealing from every author who had their works stolen to train the AI you're using, AND you are telling developers that it's totally okay that they do this!
It's not okay.
Don't use AI. Period.
use AI for good!!! not for content!!!
there are so many good things you can do with AI as a fanfic writer instead of asking them to just write the story for you:
no beta reader? ask the AI to review it and check if you agree with the suggestions
writing softwares sometimes let some mistakes slip, ask AI to check spelling, verbal time inconsistency, word repetition, synonims, if there are excessive adjectives/adverbs, too much passive voice and so on
do your research there! is xyz canon or fanon? please show me a clip/text of it in the original source material? has xyz ever been used in fanfics before? how? and then credit the ideas
you lack ideas and have no friends available to bounce around some concepts? hey AI suggest me different writing styles based on what I already do? what are the key elements for writing this genre? has xyz have been done? link me to those fics so I can read the reference
struggling with ideas and how to translate them into words on paper is the whole fun of writing! don't skip it to go straight to the final product, the process is way more rewarding
