The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes dir: Billy Wilder, 1970

I only watched The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes for the first time a few days ago but it lights my brain up in that special way that I know I’ll revisit it a lot. Don’t get me wrong, it’s far from perfect, for one thing Colin Blakely’s Watson is a little too shouty for me, but it’s very worthwhile to check out despite its shortcomings, which I think mostly come from the fact that so much was cut from the intended script.

I absolutely love Robert Stephens as Holmes. His face is so good, he has a way of looking at Watson when he doesn’t know he’s being observed that is very soft. I thought I was hallucinating the beginning of this movie with Holmes telling the ballet dancer he’s gay and in a relationship with Watson. I thought it was going to be played for a joke, and it was a bit, but it didn’t just end there. Holmes and Watson have a conversation about the repercussions in a lengthy scene that turns very serious by the end. I can’t believe this was 1970 and no one has since tried to build on this specific dynamic in a more meaningful way. Someone needs to remake this into a mini-series exactly how Billy Wilder intended it to be, here’s hoping public domain can make it so.

Also, the backstory of the making of this film is so out of control: Robert Stephens’s nervous breakdown and suicide attempt during the production, the amount of years Billy Wilder was trying to write it and get it made, the interference of ACD’s son, the Loch Ness monster prop that the crew lost in actual Loch Ness, the immense scope of the episodic story they were going for, the way it got cut down from its original 3 hour 45 minute runtime and how that cut footage was lost forever! (this is crazy! everyone go check your attics and storage lockers right now).

In one of the interviews I found, Robert Stephens says “if something is boring — if it’s three minutes long it’s too long, but if it’s interesting it’s never long enough…you don’t want it to end.” Big same Toby Stephens’ dad, big SAME. I didn’t want it to end. I read the uncut script and I am just floored at what we missed out on. Thankfully some footage and audio remain of some of the cut scenes (but still! check your basements too).

Just fully let it settle into your brain that they filmed all of these stories in the script, and then cut most of it away. Like that is mind-blowing to me, it existed at one point as it was fully intended to be. If this was made now during home entertainment times, they would have no problem releasing an almost four-hour movie, but at the very least there would be a big director’s cut dvd release and we would be enjoying all the small Holmes x Watson moments we deserve.

Anyway, in pretty short order I found a bunch of interesting links to stuff, details below. I also consulted my very well-thumbed Conversations with Wilder book by Cameron Crowe, but there wasn’t that much more information in there. What ACOC fanon are people getting so upset over?

Come traveler. Let me tell you a tale. For I, too, was unaware of it until they went absolutely bugfuck all over Twitter. But if you don't want the whole long-winded epic: people shipped Belizabeth Brassica and Saint Citrina and while there has been no evidence indicating this will or not be confirmed or even mentioned they FREAKED OUT about how Matt would OBVIOUSLY destroy the "widespread" fanon (it is not widespread), specifically implying he'd do so in a bigoted way. Then some D20 guests noticed because the people saying this are not like, unknown fanartists (in fact one implied they had been asked to create art for the season but forgot to check their DMs) and were like "this is entitled and stupid and needlessly cruel to Matt, who is like, a guy we personally know and generally like." The people then, rather than saying "my B" and taking this to the DMs like a normal person who wants to talk shit, repeatedly doubled down. As of a few hours ago they were accusing Jasmine Bhullar of subtweeting them when she was in fact merely promoting an entirely unrelated show, it's sparked both a heartfelt discussion about how Matt's discussion of body dysmorphia has helped people and a conversation about how there's toxicity in all fandoms but the D20 community refuses to even acknowledge it; and also I think they've burned their chances of ever doing fan art for an actual play of any size in LA, Chicago, New York, London, or the centroid that represents an equidistant point from all the McElroys which is, I believe, hilariously for Amnesty fans, in the Monongahela National Forest.

Anyway POV we're around a campfire, I'm drinking something lightly alcoholic, and you wish to hear of The Drama At Length:

Do you remember Belizabeth Brassica, aka Broccoli Pope loosely based in appearance on Queen Elizabeth I (technically renaissance rather than high medieval but like...people constantly mix those up in D&D so it's fine)?

Great. Now do you remember the Rocks Sisters? Not the twins played by Siobhan and Emily; Amethar's four older sisters who died in the Ravening War, before the story started: Rococoa, Lazuli, Citrina, and Sapphria. Rococoa was a general; Lazuli an archmage (and Caramelinda's wife before she died; Caramelinda then married Amethar because while Lazuli had been a love match, this was a beneficial marriage for political purposes); Citrina a devotee of The Bulb; and Sapphria a spy and diplomat. They get talked about a lot, for sure, but their presence in the story is to be absent and to haunt the narrative.

Anyway the fanon is that Citrina and Belizabeth were in a relationship. In canon, I believe all we know is that both were devotees of the bulb; that Citrina held positions that might be considered heretical by some (she was a passionate believer in love matches and supported Amethar's marriage to a commoner in the Dairy Isles) and that Belizabeth ordered that she be killed.

Here's where this gets fun. So ACOC aired pretty much exactly three years ago, and while I think it's considered by many to be a high point in D20's oeuvre, a lot of fans have, you know, kept up with D20 on the whole and not dwelt on it in depth. But a small group of people have been consistently focused on this ship between an NPC who is vitally important to the narrative but shows up in fewer than a third of the total episodes; and a character dead before the story ever started. Which, I need to stress, is fine; the joy of headcanons is playing in the empty spaces.

Flash forward to 2023: a creative director who was generally opposed to revisiting past campaign settings and preferred standalone has just amicably parted ways. Neverafter has gotten mixed reviews (I have to see the last 8 episodes; this is anecdotal but some of the editing choices, plus the both dense yet meandering plot, brought the momentum of a truly fantastic TPK and resolution early on to a shuddering halt), and really nothing but A Court of Fey and Flowers has truly stuck for some time. The fandom has been clamoring for Fantasy High Junior Year for quite some time to no avail. The switch to 10-episode sidequests from 6 episode sidequests has met lukewarm reception. In short: D20 could use something flashy to revitalize their next sidequest. Enter: Matt Mercer as DM.

Now, a lot of D20 fans who are not part of the (significant) overlap with CR fans hate Matt Mercer. This is in part because a lot of people who got Big Mad about ships in Campaign 2 went to D20 and proceeded to badmouth Critical Role, a show they happily watched and made art for until roughly episode 107-ish of Campaign 2, proclaiming it homophobic (wrong two women kissed); racist (one of the women who kissed is a dark-skinned woman played by a white woman, which would have still been true if she kissed the other woman but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯); and probably problematic in other ways. To be clear I am not saying Critical Role is above criticism, and it has made its missteps, but like, the fact that these complaints showed up conveniently only when a ship didn't happen and mostly from like, white teenagers who proceeded to simultaneously call the cast transphobic and deliberately get their names wrong means this is not the criticism that is valid and worth considering, as is the fact that technically Matt had nothing to do with the ship not happening, but they've realized being an asshole to Marisha about her character's romantic choices will rightfully get you flayed alive. Also some D20 fans just hate Critical Role in the way that if you live in Boston you're supposed to hate New York and vice versa but if you say "why? what if I just want the baseball boys to have a good time together?" no one can answer.

Anyway here's a diagram to illustrate the group I'm talking about; they're the green dot:

So: a couple of them decided a smart thing to do on Twitter in front of God and everybody was to say that they were worried Matt would contradict this "widely established" fanlore because he is not plugged into the ACOC fandom. They then proceeded to specifically (jokingly, but like, in a shitty way, still where everyone could see it) say that Matt would probably introduce Belizabeth as being married to her husband because she is 100% straight.

Now there's a bunch of problems here, and people pointed them out. Namely:

This is a weird thing to assume Matt would do, ie, automatically make an arbitrary NPC definitely straight, even if you're joking about it; like, he has a pretty decent track record for making NPCs of varying genders and sexualities, especially by C2 and C3.

This is not even widely established fanlore; this is a tiny group of fans of ACOC. See below for more on that.

Even if it were widely established fanlore, it's unlikely Brennan would know either.

Even if it were widely established fanlore and Matt or Brennan were aware of it, they are under no obligation to adhere to fanlore, because it's fanlore, not the established canon of A Crown of Candy. This does not make fanlore bad! It just means that creators are allowed to ignore it in the same way that fan creators are allowed to ignore canon; this is a two-way street.

Therefore, because this is fanlore, even if Matt did say "here is Belizabeth and her husband, and she has only ever been involved with men" this would not be homophobic because the character's sexuality has never been established and straight is one of the possible sexualities she could have. Obviously if he went super hard on her straightness that could get weird but that's a fucking bonkers stretch.

When people pointed it out, this group and a few other people who just fucking hate Matt kept dismissing them as CR fans. Then it caught the attention of various D20 guest cast members or people in the broader TTRPG scene, who have pointed out that like...the actual play and TTRPG industry is a place where basically everyone in a particular region knows everyone else and they are all good friends and this is shitty. The D20 fans mad that Matt is DM-ing The Ravening War kept doubling down and started making outright ad-hominem attacks on Matt (notably his appearance and dress which is like, shitty and irrelevant to this fanon thing anyway even before you consider the body dysmorphia) and whining that because they've made some charity fanzines, a thing people have been doing since the dawn of Star Trek TOS, they deserve...something. People rightfully called them out as 1. entitled brats and 2. needlessly cruel. They keep whining that CR fans are dogpiling them when in fact like, the entire TTRPG community including, as far as I can tell, the D20 community who overlaps with CR fandom and even the D20 community that does not but is neutral on CR, is like "you suck, you started it, this fandom is not exempted from typical fandom toxicity, and you will look back on this in 5 years and vomit from embarrassment."

Anyway this is all kind of tiresome, but also pretty funny because literally I'm expecting a bunch of fanartists who are immensely high on their own farts to be 100% blacklisted from ever receiving a commission from like, any Actual Play of note and also a lot of fans; there's an outpouring of support for Matt that far outstrips what there would have been without a handful of idiots starting shit; and also the season is fully filmed anyway so if this ship was confirmed noncanon, it happened a few months ago anyway and there's nothing anyone can do.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, pretty much all these losers are still 100% going to watch The Ravening War anyway so like, this has all amounted to a net positive for everyone but them.

Hello! I want to start this post by telling you guys something really interesting...

Tl;dr: I'm taking a break for a month due to severe stress and performance anxiety, plus college and work is kicking me in the arse, but do send requests and prompts in because I need to write them FLUFF to get rid of the stress. Love ya!

So a month ago I stumbled upon a really amazing writer here on tumblr dearest, and I immediately fell in love with their work. It was so well written, and I couldn't comprehend the fact that it was the first ever story they've ever written and they wrote it under such circumstances that if I were to be put in their position, I can guarantee I wouldn't even be able to string a coherent sentence.

Anyway, that really got me thinking.

It's been two months since I first started writing, and revisiting old works of mine reveals something along the lines of "I'm not improving," and "I'm not creative."

It's been a problem I seem to notice, is that I struggle a lot with characterization (ESPECIALLY this) and pacing, among other things that makes me view my works mostly as blegh.

I know comparing is probably not the best way to develop, and I wouldn't say I'm envious of people's talents (because it's obvious some people are just so great at stuff lmao) but it's more like I'm disappointed in myself I guess(?)

In the collective 20 works that I've published over the two months, I still can't fully grasp what works and what doesn't with the Fandom, and I can't quite identify nor fix the problems in my writings. Combined with the burn out, this makes writing a very painful process for me even though I really want to enjoy it.

I rely very heavily on external validations and to see that in the midst of the dead Fandom (when compared to when it's at its peak), people can still garner almost 1k notes in the span of a week (and I can see why it's very well loved), posting here just makes me so stressed when I shouldn't even be.

It got so bad to the point I have trouble breathing every time I think about writing, and although now it doesn't happen as often, the performance anxiety is pretty much there.

Work, as well as college too has been a pretty great contributor for my stress and to put writing on top of that is just excruciating for me.

And that's why I'm taking a break!

It'll probably a month break like how I've stated in previous post, because it's become apparent I need rest LMAO

Kingdom Hearts 4 Challenge Day 6: A World to Revisit

(So, I swear all of my posts really aren't meant to be about Kairi. Like, I was going to make this cool manip where it looked like Sora was saving Melody from drowning, but my Sony Vegas refused to open for some reason? So I just decided to post these similar images of Melody and Kairi instead. That being said... while I don't need Kairi to be the one to go to a The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea world if we ever got one--I'd be more than okay with it being Sora--that would be cool. I'd love to see mermaid Kairi, since Kairi is named for the sea. And Kairi's name can even mean "melody." And she has a lot in common with Ariel. I even suspect she was somewhat based on Ariel, but anyway.)

The reason I would want Atlantica is honestly just because I would want a pretty underwater world again with the Unreal Engine graphics. And that can be a world that we've never been to before, like, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. But if we don't get a new one, then I would want an old one like Atlantica here. Plus... even though I don't think this movie is the greatest. At all. I feel like it's okay... and depending on how they handle it, the KH writers could potentially make it better, with what they add to it. Also, I feel like if we go to Atlantica one more time--with better swimming controls, and in an attempt that isn't a musical--we could finally redeem the world. And that would be great to see.

And now, for whatever reason, I'm going to list some other worlds I'd be more than okay with returning (even though I think we were only supposed to list one. Shh.)

Wonderland: But only if the world is expanded and it's a "sequel," via it being based on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

Deep Jungle: I know this will surely never happen, since I know Disney has lost the rights to Tarzan. But on the off-chance they ever got the rights back somehow, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing this world back again, perhaps adapting some of the stories from the TV show, like the stuff with Princess La.

Agrabah: I definitely want to go here one more time and to have the "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" story depicted. (I probably would even prefer this even over Atlantica, actually, even though I want that pretty underwater level). This was one of the better Disney sequels, after all. And Sora most definitely deserves to be there for Aladdin and Jasmine's wedding.

Neverland: I wouldn't be opposed to the second Peter Pan movie being adapted.

The Land of Dragons: I'd be all for us having Mulan II, actually.

The Beast's Castle: I've always wanted "Beauty and the Beast and the Enchanted Christmas." I want to fight Forte. LOL. While I doubt it will happen, for obvious reasons, I feel like they could find a way to do it: like Belle writes Sora and the gang a part of her and the Beast's story that they don't know about (the Enchanted Christmas story) and sends it to them as a gift (maybe even for Christmas?), and once Sora opens it, he somehow gets pulled into said story.

Pirates of the Caribbean: I wouldn't mind a "Dead Men Tell No Tales" world.

The Lion King II: Simba's Pride would be awesome.

I would also kill for Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.

While part of me is loath to mention this one... I feel like no one was completely satisfied with the La Cité des Cloches world in Dream Drop Distance (because of lack of NPCs and that kind of thing). And there is a "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II" that Disney made. Absolutely no one likes this movie, and for good reason. But I don't know... I would be willing to tolerate it, just to see this world in the quality it deserves. And maybe Square Enix could somehow make it better... actually, surely not. But like I said: I could tolerate this just to run around Notre Dame in pretty Unreal Engine graphics.

I know that originally with DDD, the plan was Sora to go to all of the original Fantasia locations and for Riku to go to the ones in Fantasia 2000. But then they realized there were enough locations in the first movie for them both to go to, and they didn't need to crank out the sequel after all (or something like that). So I certainly wouldn't mind getting Fantasia 2000 now, in KHIV.

Tangled I'd love to go here again, if we get to see some of the cool plots from the TV show, that I've watched on YouTube. LOL

Arendelle We all know we'll be going here. It isn't even a question. I just hope that this time, Disney gives Square Enix much more freedom (let Elsa and Anna be party members, please). Since Frozen II is kind of hit and miss. Square Enix could really make something cool with it--like they could have with Frozen in KHIII--if they're allowed some creativity.

Wreck-It Ralph Because no one, and I mean no one, wanted us to first experience this world in KHUX, tbh.

Radiant Garden I just really want to finish some of the plot threads there that are still hanging.

Destiny Islands I just really want to be able to go back here and play, dangit! And maybe finally get to explore the main island!

Shibuya Just let us meet Neku, Shiki, Beat, Joshua, and Rhyme in their Shibuya (even if it's an in the credits thing), if Quadratum isn't theirs and we're not going to meet them (or the Wicked Twisters) in the game, otherwise.

Hi, dear! How are you? First of all, thank you so much for stopping by and for revisiting HG!

Hmm... unpopular opinions? Can an author have unpopular opinions about her own work? Haha. Anyways, I guess I have a certain point of view on a few relationships that might not be everybody's take on it.

Firstly, and I dare to think this is the one I've talked about the most, for me— and I repeat, for me— Twiggy (or MC, the reader, or Y/N) was also disloyal to Erwin. What she did with Levi during winter break could be considered infidelity. This is more of a personal take on what an individual considers "infidelity" or "not" in a relationship. I personally believe that a relationship stands until both parties involved are aware of the "end" of that relationship. Maybe they were not on the best terms, but implying that you're very angry with your partner, as Twiggy did to Erwin, doesn't necessarily mean it's over. Maybe the other person doesn't know it's over for real, and therefore, for Erwin, the relationship finished when she came back from winter break. Also, this is a personal take, but I believe that just because someone did something horrible or wrong to you in multiple situations in life, that's not a free pass to do the same or something wrong too. Two wrongs don't make a right, so to speak. So, at least for me morally, just because Erwin was disloyal doesn't give Twiggy a green light to be disloyal too. Because, if that's the case, then the only limit stopping you from not cheating is simply not being the first one to commit infidelity?

Probably my other unpopular opinion is that Nanaba was kinda right, lmao. I mean, if I had a friend who is a little bit naive, has some issues romanticizing certain aspects of her life that she shouldn't, just came out of a very hurtful experience, and decides to, in less than two months, get into a new relationship with a dude I know absolutely nothing about... I would also think he's taking advantage of her, lmao. Plus, Nanaba may not be "right" all the time, but if a cheerful friend suddenly doesn't spend time with us anymore, disappears, does things she usually wouldn't do... I'd also think this "new guy" is manipulating her and isolating her to hold the last word in everything. It's a very common symptom of dating a manipulator when you isolate yourself; the manipulator needs to hold the one and only version of the story. Of course, we, as readers, know that Levi isn't like that or hurting Twiggy, but Nanaba doesn't know that.

Third, Twiggy has serious communication issues, and one reason her relationship with Erwin didn't work out is because of this. Of course, a lot of things were wrong in that relationship, but Twiggy didn't help, and also, most of the issues she had with Levi as a couple are... the same ones she had with Erwin, lmao. Expecting someone to read your mind isn't very healthy relationship advice. She told Erwin "Go, I don't mind it" and then was offended that he did exactly that, lmao. Erwin asked a million times about the team, and she lied about it a million and one times. She never told Erwin about having asthma and obviously struggling with it. Instead of telling him that hanging out with his friends made her insecure because Marie would be there, she held the struggle for like six months and brought it up many months later. She never confessed to suffering. Not trying to play devil's advocate, but setting aside Erwin's infidelity, the dude probably thinks, "Everything was somehow okay until now; those months were the worst months of her life. How was I supposed to know if she didn't tell me? I don't read minds!" There's a very subtle fact that I like, and that is Erwin mentions multiple times that he's into girls with "long hair," Marie has long hair. He mentions it in a spin-off and, also when he and Twiggy are alone at the office; he unties her hair and plays with it. Erwin wanting her to look "older" and "short hair" was something that Twiggy invented in her head, lmao, nobody told her that, those were her own insecurities talking, not Erwin's tastes.

Finally, Levi is also a man of that "society," and he has a lot of toxic traits, haha. He's a sunshine, but he's not perfect. For example, he can be very possessive and controlling. Obviously, considering the options of that period of time, he's Mr. Woke and open-minded, and he's a great option. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) It’s been years since I’ve gone back to this and it really is one of the best superhero movies ever made, right? I hope the next one succeeds and it leads to more animated features. It just...you can do so much more. Sure the live-action superhero movies have a lot of animation but they’re bound by our physics and the uncanny valley and it’s just not the same.

Ted Lasso (Episode 3.01 to 3.03) Glad to be back. It’s been interesting seeing the online rise, then fall, then rise again of support for this show but honestly, who cares? Do you like watching it? Great. Do I like watching it? Absolutely. It’s a project that was planned from season 1 and it shows and I wish more media was approached in this way.

Spy x Family (Episode 1.08 to 1.25) Okay needed to shift my expectations with this one. I really thought we’d get more of Yor and her assassin life. She’s kinda just a background character to Loid and Anya and that feels like a missed opportunity.

The Great (Episode 2.09 to 2.10) Great cap to the season. Full arcs for characters, a satisfying resolution and yet still enough of a hook to get me excited for the third season. Just some gorgeous, funny, dramatic television. Big fan.

Arabian Nights (Companion Library Edition) (Page 124 of 244) Thrifted this and for some reason never knew it was a collection of short stories? Which seems obvious now. Anyway I’m sooooo slow at really short story collections but they’ve been interesting to read. Something about the translation feels like a slog to actually read but the stories included are a lot of fun. 

Wonderland Revisited and the Games Alice Played There by Keith Sheppard (Complete) I’m super picky when it comes to adaptations of Carroll’s works. Many take Wonderland and make it dark, twisted, and mature (meh) but I find the more interesting take is one that continues with the same momentum. This one doesn’t quite work in capturing the spirit of the original books for me but there’s a lot of really great ideas in here.

Superman for all Seasons by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale (Complete) Having loved their Batman books I picked this up and, being younger and dumber, didn’t like it at the time. Where was the action? Where were the villains? I was naive. Going back to this I really appreciate the study of Superman, the narrative through the supporting cast, and the struggles that can’t be resolved through punching. Man Loeb & Sale were a team.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross (Complete) As an one-off story, this delivers everything I’d want out of an FF adventure: group banter, weird worlds, and lots of mumbo jumbo science. Plus I mean the artwork is truly humbling. I had to read it twice and I still only 80% understand it all but that’s not a complaint. Totally worth picking up if you have even a passing interest in the Fantastic Four.

Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 5 & 6 by by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley, and more  (Complete) Decided to pick up with my reread of the Ultimate Spider-Man series again and woof I forgot how much I didn’t like volume 5. The first half is an Ultimates story that I STILL find too wordy, and the movie tie-in of the second half never quite clicked. I dunno maybe there are too many losses and not enough wins for Parker in this one? Volume 6, however, is great. It has one of the most frustrating deaths in the series but it really explores the aftermath and impact. And introducing Johnny Storm and using him as the reason Spider-Man gets back into the hero stuff is really great. Spider-Man doesn’t need to solve all problems with punches and this book gets that.

if you want to read something else of mine (CANT BELIEVE IM EVEN WRITING THIS SDFGHJ) you may try my dear, it is not so dreadful here, which i consider my magnum opus (lmao!!). it's an american horror story: apocalypse fic, but i wouldn't say you need to know much about the show to get into it; it's a hades&persephone fusion, involving a sexy blond villain and a magnificent, resilient witch who brings him to heel. i mean, i think that out of all that i've written this is the one i'm most proud of, so there's that 🤣

re: tom, GOOD OL' TOM. other villains wish they were as sexy or mentally unstable 🤧 my tom reblogs are mostly due to the WIP i've been writing for years (sadly, only in my head though lmao), but i think i've managed to sneak some of those ideas into wasteland, so it's not that bad? i used to read A LOT of tom fic back in the day, mostly during the ff.net era, but of course when i'm asked for recs my mind goes blank. the one favourite i remember is what do you want? - sadly unfinished - but i remember being absolutely obsessed with it. i have many more recs, i'm sure, but i'd have to wade through my phone bookmarks for it, so that may take some time. i'll get back to you when i do, though, i'd love to revisit some of those myself!

What are some fics you’d like to write someday, but don’t necessarily have the time for right now?

hey!! sorry it took me forever to answer this, I've been pretty inactive on tumblr the last couple weeks (ironically because I've been writing a lot lol). I love this question!

there are so many fics I want to write eventually but don't have the time to write for at least a few months with other wips.

these aren't new fics, but I really want to finish the two fic story arcs I started pre-S2 (Someone Who Makes You Feel It and Your Love is Tried & True Blue) that I really struggled to revisit during and post-S2. I only have three installments left in Someone Who Makes You Feel It and I really would like to revisit my pre-S2 imagining of adult Van and taivan's reunion before S3, even if it is all wildly contrary to canon. I just would love to write them a happier ending than what they'll likely get in canon. I'm also interested in revisiting Your Love is Tried & True Blue particularly after seeing all the heartbreak of those years spent apart that could've been avoided by them reuniting 20 years sooner and I have two (possibly three) fluffy, slice of life style chapters planned, I just need the time to write them.

I also really want to revisit the There She Goes Again universe in the future, but I haven't quite decided what that will look like, yet.

(I also plan on revisiting my taivan pride fic next June).

as far as new fics that are planned for the far-off future:

a vannat friendship centered pre-crash fic of them working a summer job together with some background pre-relationship taivan.

a very angsty taivan breakup songfic (sometime pre-S3)

I have a few prequels to It's Nice to Have a "Friend" planned for the near future including Taissa's pov of figuring out she liked Van and Tai's pov of the party where she got jealous while Van remained oblivous.

I also really want to write a no crash taivan proposal and wedding fic eventually, but I'm still deciding how to approach it. plus, I want to write more no crash fluff fics in general to cope with canon lol

I also have two fics that I'm putting off until I'm a bit more confident writing in Tai's pov (I didn't even attempt alternating pov until like August of this year, so I'm really still getting comfortable writing in Taissa's voice).

The first is a one shot expanding on this hc I shared on tumblr a few months ago. I just think it would be really interesting to explore how Taissa dealt with (more like supressed) her breakup from Van while living in the city that had really always been Van's dream city for law school. I also would love to use the fic to explore how other tai may have coped with the separation from Van (especially when it wasn't her decision).

Then, I also want to do a semi-sequel to that first one shot of the events of S1 & S2 in 2021 entirely from other tai's pov. I have always really felt that other tai also loves Van, and like it must've been so hard for her to wake up after 20 something years without the only person she had ever really loved and counted on beside her. in a lot of ways, I really think the entire situation was also frightening for other tai. I honestly have a lot of empathy for her, and I would just love to explore the entire situation from her perspective more.

and then, outside of taivan, I really would love to work on a few fics for jesslupe, I've loved the ship forever but haven't contributed any fanworks. also, jeanviv (from Blue Jean) because I really relate to Jean a lot and I feel like their romance is such an incredible portrayal of butch4butch love in media, but I don't believe there are any fics for them, yet.

anyway, thanks again for asking this!! I really hope I can get around to writing all of these eventually.

• Twisted Feelings didn’t gain much traction at first I nearly ended it until a friend told me how much they enjoyed it. (This is why comments and inbox submissions are so important)

• Come Here Sweetheart nearly was scrapped, I found it hard to do.

• I initially didn’t want to write for Niragi but ended up doing it anyway.

• I have so many stories that need editing but not enough time so I hate looking at past work because of the mistakes.

•Trust Me was supposed to be a one shot but I wanted to write more, I was going to turn it into a series and didn’t. Jimin was going to break YNs heart. ( I was depressed lmao)

•I have had a Kuina and Ann 4 chapter fic sitting in my drafts for a year, it’s complete and edited but it but I have a lot of personal stuff in it and it may be too heavy so idk what to do with it.

• I figured out my sexuality/identity after reading/writing The Gentlemen.

• TGM hobi was going to join the relationship (my idea) I changed it when I understood more of what he represented for so many people.

•I want to write me own universe story, I have a few ideas for a story but it would be 200k plus and I can’t decide on the ship. I want to finish all my current stories and then work on it.

•I wrote the first 20 chapters of risk it all in 3 weeks, I was exhausted and left myself so drained. Never do that.

• Many of my story plots started from dreams or one liners I see in random places, I don’t plan many of my stories. Risk it all, trust me and twisted feelings are the only ones.

•I got de@th threats for posting BTS fics but continued anyway bc I have too many ideas.

•I really do have too many ideas and my hands can’t write fast enough. I hate that I can’t get my stories out the way I want too.

• I tend to write between 10pm and 4am I have insomnia and can never really sleep, I edit during the day but very rarely will I write in the day time.

•someone recommended me my own story on Twitter, I felt so good 😭

•In quiet getaway I was going to make it an angst fix with more than 1 chapter but it worked well for the 1000 special. I was worried to post it bc a friend had wrote a similar trope in her story little so you know (recommend it 100) and I didn’t want her to think I copied her.

•we may revisit the futures of the 1000 followers special couples depending on what people want.

•Not So Dinner date was supposed to be Jin x reader but I changed it to Namjoon.

New Bridgeport

For the past month, I’ve been going through my CC, in my yearly quest to get rid of stuff I never use. Sadly, I downloaded more new stuff than I got rid of. But such is life. Anyway, while looking for old sets that I’d somehow lost, I came across a remake of sorts, of Bridgeport. It’s called “My Bridgeport’ by Rflong7. Apparently, someone asked her to empty out the main town - obviously they never heard of the mass destruction feature on Master Controller - and Rflong7 agreed to do it. While she was at it, she fixed the routing issues. (One of the main reasons I never play EA’s version!) And since I don’t really play vampires and such - only supernatural I play are witches - I figured I’d try this world. It comes unpopulated, which for me is a HUGE plus.

All of the original lots are there, but since I’ve been watching “Friends” reruns, I decided this world needed a coffeeshop. (Remember, the original world only had lots from the 1st 3 EPs). I saw a Central Perk lot over on TSR, but it was only 1 story, and if you watch the show, it’s in a high-rise. So, I “fixed” the lot, by adding a few more levels. (BTW, those brick textures are all the same, they just look a tad different on the cornice. Not sure why.) I may go back in and add a “frieze” level to further increase the height of the building. Looks a tad short, looking at it now. Since the original was on a much smaller lot and this one is bigger, I was also able to expand this one a bit. And as a sidenote, those “fire-escape” stairs were a devil to place. Sometimes the damn game just won’t cooperate with you! 

This is the interior. I changed the lot zoning from “hangout” to “coffeehouse,” then got rid of the original Late-Night bar for the coffee one from Uni. I used CC from @aroundthesims for that area. (Thank you, Sandy!) I also got rid of the columns that were used in the original and used that porch railing item. Plus, I decided to use a brick texture for the walls. Then I switched out some of the furniture, added artwork, rugs, plants, and speakers. And on the “stage” by the front window, I switched out the chair that was next to the guitar for danjelay’s Singer spot. (It works like the karaoke machine). And viola! Done!

Then I went down to the bay area and placed this lot, since I figured the town crooks needed a place to go after they were apprehended by the police. The original was one created by cyclonesue over on TSR. Since I always convert simspaks into package files and am too damn lazy to hunt down all the original CC used, I substituted stuff I had for what was missing, Like that fence. I think it was created by gelina and has scissor-wire on top. Inside. I also got rid of all the crap cyclonesue used to “entertain” the inmates. I actually ran the medical department in our county jail for a couple of years, and believe me, no one gave a rat’s ass if the inmates were “entertained.” (Some of them were hardcore nasties. We’re talking serial killers.) I’m planning on revisiting this lot, and making some more changes, so when I do, I’ll show you the interior.

This is another cyclonesue lot - her sewage works one. Like the 1st one, it was created fairly early on by her and didn’t use any of the lovely CC she later created. It’s zoned as a pool, because who hasn’t dreamed of swimming in raw sewage?! Again, it was on a 30x30 and this space is 40x40. So, I added stuff. I used @crowkeeperthesimmer’s lovely wall texture set - thank you! - for the exterior finishes on everything, Then, replaced all the windows and doors with the “factory set” ones by cyclonesue. And used her “grill” floor set on some of the walkways. Then added more plants, a parking area, and spawners. (There are none on the original lot). Since I don’t plan on redoing the science center, I added the robot fish and the death fish here - alone with some other weird fish spawners. Since these fish are living in waste pools, I figure they’ve mutated a tad. BTW, that building in the front of the picture is an apartment building that was already there. The only way I could take a picture was doing it from that lot. I was going to eventually bulldoze it, but I figured, “Who doesn’t want to rent a space overlooking the sewage plant and town jail?” so, it gets to stay. BTW, I really need to google how to change the color of the water in those pools to make them look more sewagey. (Totally a word!) 

There are 1 or 2 more 40x40 lots down there that I will be doing. But right now, I’m not sure what will go there other than an industrial build.

So I was thinking about Star Team's inspirations and like the two biggest ones that have influenced the way both Rainder and I wrote Star Team (as in vibes, not story as much) were Katana Zero and Spiderman into the spiderverse, as we were both obsessed with those two pieces of media back in late 2018 (when Star Team really took the shape it has to this day). And for the longest time I always assumed that story wise it is more similar to Katana Zero (still the similarities are very superficial) while S:ITSV is mostly vibes. But then the more I thought about it, Star Team could easily work in a spiderman setting. Nora specifically would make a good spider person imo, hell even in the story proper she sometimes uses her scarf as a grappling hook (so in the spiderman setting like how the web is used). Plus Star Team is a few steps removed from being a superhero story so I said screw it, let's do this.

Spidernora au lessgo. It doesn't have 1 to 1 parallels to spiderman proper stories, but shhhh I am gonna be silly here. Also this au has a lot of similarities with ST proper, much like the Catalyst au (hey another "pretty much" superhero au), just with some adjustments to the relationship dynamics and the world a little.

For spidernora's design I had to go with the classic pink-blue-white Nora look (walking trans pride flag). While Nora is not head covering hijabi, she still wears clothes that would align with the rules (loose fitting, covering the entire body), so I tried to not make their spidey suit skin tight. They get poofy pants instead of a skirt because it is probably easier to move in and I cannot imagine her wearing a skirt/dress unless she's wearing baju kurung. Aaanyways robo backpack with robo limbs designed by Terrance (lower) because what is a spider without 8 limbs (though if needed the backpack would provide them with two extra robo limbs, making is 10 total. Nora never uses them out of principle as the scarf does most of the heavy lifting anyways). Anyways stretchy scarf made of special self replicating material to work almost like web. As for powers, aside from the sticking to walls and spidey senses, she has (way too much) heightened senses and can jump really high hence the jumping spider associations. The bun part of the name is because you cannot take away the bunny parallels from Nora in any au, over my dead body. In this au they'd have a relatively more normal childhood compared to star team proper. Now how normal it is for them to run away from home in both timelines ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Moving on we got the one and only, the legend themselves, Maya Marah. She is pretty much the same character as with proper Star Team, but the Star Team blog (now named spiderblog) has the added feature of a conspiracy board where she tries to figure out who J. Spiderbun is. Eventually she does discover who is behind the mask (I mean it's her roommate, and her other roommate works with her) and decides to not reveal it. She ends up becoming the man in the chair for Nora. What's her secret? I ain't spoiling ST so easily hahaha.

The third roommate, Terry, everyone's favourite alien. I mean his role is pretty much the same as Star Team proper but he is more of Nora's assistant than Maya's here. Also the circumstances of U.S.O are different and can't go into it without spoiling Star Team.

IT'S THEM IT'S THEM but they get demoted for this au. Imagine being just captain and vice-captain of the police (cringe). In this au Aradia and Damien unfortunately don't become friends with the Nora-Maya-Terry trio but still act as sort of antagonists (in the sense that they try to stop J. Spiderbun from doing their thing, much to Aradia's dismay). Damien and Maya are still sworn rivals. Anyways can't wait for Damien to inevitably die trying to save a chi-

I KNOW clockstopper's design could use some work, it's a first draft of sorts (If I ever decide to revisit this au) but HEYYYY LOOOK it's Nora's eternal narrative foil, the disaster herself Rena!! What do you mean a spiderman finding out one of their friends is a supervillain isn't a canon event? It is in my heart. Rena and Nora still have The Fight for the same reasons pretty much, only difference being that what happened between those 4 years of them not being in contact is veeery different. Well.... hm... anyways if I continue this section I will end up rambling about the renora dynamic and we don't want a 10k page rant do we. As a villain she usually has 0 agency, but when she does stuff that seem out of character it's when her real character shines through. Maybe she gets redeemed down the line woooo

Lightning round because it is getting late, I feel bad for not giving Jack a dedicated page like the rest of the team. Jack is central to the main arc of the au, as he is the one most closely connected to Dr Faith (ooooh who is she~ I actually can't explain anything more without spoiling actual Star Team so-). Hey isn't it funny how Ender and Maya are the two characters who are the most alike their canon counterparts- Rose 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐 she's never looked better, she deserves being a corrupt billionaire that does some unethical stuff from time to time and by that I mean frequently.

The rest of the characters would have a less significant role but sone type of role nonetheless. Anyways this was a fun little thing and not to be taken too seriously, I just love talking about my blorbos (star team characters) and putting them in different situations (there are a billion ST aus)

Animation Night 158: The Carnival Is Back In Town

Hi everyone, it’s Animation Night! Still happening!!

Tonight I am evidently running quite late. The reasonable reason for this is that I just arrived at my friends’ house in Glasgow and it’s taken a minute to get everything set up. The less reasonable reason is that I spent a lot of time today playing Beat Saber. But anyway!

Today is going to be a combination of old stuff and new stuff! Back in the day, one of the first things I showed on Animation Night were short film collections such as Meikyū Monogatari (1987) [lit. Labyrinth Tales, but known in English as Neo Tokyo and Manie-Manie] and Robot Carnival (also 1987).

The unifying factor in both of these is Katsuhiro Otomo, but let’s not make it all about him! Both are collections of short films by a huge variety of directors. For Otomo himself, it was a ridiculously busy time - as well as directing films in both collections he was hard at work on Akira. For Robot Carnival he created the intro and outro, telling the story of the Robot Carnival itself, a massive crawling machine whose displays have turned into deadly weapons to the apocalypse survivors it runs over below.

And alongside him are a number of familiar names. Kōji Morimoto, future cofounder of Studio 4C, made the ridiculously involved short film Franken’s Gears almost singlehandedly (his family helped with the inbetweening!). Animator Manabu Ōhashi, who tragically passed away last year, made a beautiful abstract short film called Cloud. And Yasuomi Umetsu, whose uniquely chunky hyperrealist design style I’ve written about now and again, directed a troubling short called Presence about a man who creates and destroys a gynoid, probably the most technically spectacular film he’s done. Takashi Nakamura (who I must cover soon, director of e.g. A Tree of Palme) brings a riotous midnight dance of machines in The Tale of Chicken Man and Red Neck. Hiroyuki Kitakubo, future director of Golden Boy and Blood: the Last Vampire, brings a satirical 19th-century fight in Strange Tales of Meiji Culture: Westerner’s Invasion.

All in all it’s one of my favourite short film collections - this is probably like the fourth or fifth time I’ve shown it to people? It’s a great and very varied ride.

And Meikyū Monogatari, this is the work of Madhouse, and as such it has films by Rintarō and Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Rintarō who introduces us by leading a girl into a strange surreal circus to set the stage for the other shorts. Kawajiri directs cyberpunk racing short The Running Man, which is pure imagery and carrying 1000 synthwave music videos on its back - but the original is surprisingly dreamily paced. The biggest highlight is Otomo’s Construction Cancellation Order, in which a salaryman attempts to shut down a massive out-of-control autonomous construction project, butting up against a robot foreman who will do anything to continue the work. If you watched Akira and felt like “damn I think this needs more machinery porn”, Otomo’s got you covered! It’s a great short, unfolding with a sense of wonderful comic inevitability.

Tonight the plan is to revisit both of these short films! But also to check out some recent short films that I thought were neat. For example, we have How And Why Don Jose Dissipated by ‘Animoshe’, a psychedelic short about a bee and a tourist with a truly unique style...

And Record Highs by Beryl Allee about an athletic competition among frogs amidst... striking circumstances.

It’s also coming into CalArts season, so if we feel hungry for more, I’ll check out the latest student films. Plus, if you’ve seen anything neat you’d like to watch together, tell me and I’m sure we can find room!!

I love how the characters make me feel, the way they care about each other, the embrace, the warm emotions and love which isn't superficial

It is so pure and so beautiful, it just fills me up with awe

And i want to find someone, someone who I can share the same kind of love with, make a story within and ruin them with so much love and happiness, ruin in a better way not the red flag way, I want to hold them and keep holding them

But it gets a little sad after I watch such shows and come back to reality in 2-4 days

Which is disappointing because I need to push myself more, and I'm sure if i do and put in the effort which is required in the very beginning, the things I want will make their way to me

The only things difficult are the beginnings because the outcomes are so uncertain and you don't know if something's worth your effort

But I will get over that thought process, and i will begin.

I am always too scared, especially of falling in love. I know it may sound silly but I'm scared that if i break, i may never be able to pick myself up and i will remain there, shattered.

But I need to learn, by learning to love someone i will also learn things about myself and heartbreak isn't always bad, I mean ofcourse it is, it's terrible, it hurts so much. I feel so much heartbreak over fictional characters and friendships, I can only fear about love when I compare them.

But coming back to the point, Heartbreak isn't always bad because it's necessary, to feel broken once and even though, however difficult, to pick up your own self is an important lesson.

Plus heartbreak is just proof that you cared, and isn't caring for someone the most human thing we do?

But yes, The characters from any Bl script are so beautiful, so warm. They bring the words alive. They break boundaries of roles of genders, there are no stereotypes and there is such a depth, such careful depth and creativity with each character. The exploring of oneself, to know what you want and to acknowledge your fears and parts. Small excerpts of yourself being showcased by someone who looks at you like their favourite book, picking out lines and re-reading them, embracing them. Bookmarking each and every page because they want to revisit all of you. The eyes, the fingers, the hands, all whispering love, just for you.

Anyways coming back because I seem to sway away with my words, the exploring of themes is just so beautiful. Especially regarding mental health, the gentle ways of talking about it and not taking it lightly, that is my most favourite part.

I am a straight person regarding my sexual orientation, so manifesting the kind of guy who is warm, loving, caring, helpful and not stereotypical. I hope everyone reading this finds the type of person they deserve to be with. And everyone deserves warmth and love. So yes.

Manifesting the kind of love we all dream and get excited about. And here's to hoping the same for my fictional characters too.

Just a side note but fr i was sad about John wick's death, not in a why kinda way but more like grieving and analysing kinda way and I'm happy he's at peace but also I'm sad. And i cannot watch endgame ever again because I miss Tony a lot. I also miss Rengoku so much, i swear I cried so hard about him. I miss so many characters. Theo. Rufus and Mateo.

Hello. This answer is about to be super long. My bus home from work got stuck in a ridiculous amount of traffic. Plus, you got me ruminating on this all day at work (Outside the millions of phone calls I was supposed to make. People responding to an email you sent them? Revolutionary concept if you asked me!) and think I’ve decided firmly on, and hear me out on this, “No Plan.” 

That song to me is about not worrying where things are going to go (The sun’s going to go out! Who gives a shit!) and to not sweat the small stuff. And I guess in this context, it’s about being a little worried about something new, like a relationship that has a lot of shit going against it. It’s about enjoying the little things that you do have. The “I think you’re worth at least trying,” or describing this love as “shiny and new, like a toy to be played with, nervously discovering all the nooks and crannies as time goes on.” 

(Yes, I am quoting myself. I am a very self-centric person. I am sorry)

Also now I’m head cannoning that he texted her: Did you know the sun’s going out? After watching that talk and that’s when she hit him with the I like you. A lot. Too much, actually. What better time to confess your feelings for a dear friend than also getting him out of a doom spiral? 

Anyway, one day she just gets texted an audio file with just “🖤” (the black heart emoji, which I’m sure is just one big Carly Rae Jepsen reference) out of the blue. It’s a messy, unpolished demo. 

And when she doesn’t respond immediately since she’s taking it all in, he texts again:

Yes…? 

What is this? 

A song. Not sure if you’ve heard of them before. The proper definition is: “a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.” 

I hate you.

She calls him after that. They have a “Don’t bother me while I’m working,” on that list of rules, (“I wouldn’t ask you to help me with an Excel formula, would I?”) so it’s sort of rare she hears anything before it’s finished on purpose (not every wall can be reinforced with soundproofing material). It’s a special moment. 

Ok. This was a tangent and then some. Thank you for letting me indulge my fantasies lol 

Also, half of me wanted to answer this with “Sunlight” but only because that’s my favorite. But it also can be read as putting too much into something, especially with the entire 3rd verse comparing the love being had to the Icarus story, it almost sounds like it’s bound to end in tragedy (a lot of his songs do tbh I could write about that for days). 

But, I do love the lyric “know that I would gladly be the Icarus to your certainty” so much. Need me someone like that LMFAO. 

Anyway, as for new stuff? I’m currently 3 chapters deep (of 10! and halfway through the last chapter, ironically) with an idea I’ve had for a while now that I’m really excited about. It’s pretty dialogue heavy and is set around a weekly get-together. I just don’t want to post any chapters until I’m finished because then it would never get done. 

I did almost write a threequel (is that the right word?) to the first two stories, but the dialogue was too similar and they fit better in the chaptered idea. That one was about them revisiting a place they took a trip together as friends and why nothing happened between them that first time around (spoiler: Andrew was too high and too drunk to properly process feelings and his idea for them getting together comes off as more of a joke. The next morning he's got no memory of their argument, so back to square one they were!). They were probably going to get engaged at some point. Good for those crazy kids! I wish them the best!

Sorry this has taken so long to get to! I had to setup my new computer and that was a bit more involved than I thought it would be. Also, I took a nap after work (but before setting up my computer) which was six hours long, so . . . that also put a delay in me answering the asks in my askbox, lol.

4.) Favorite male character(s)?

Tails, my baby Tails. 💜 I've talked recently about all the reasons why I love him, so I won't go into that again, but I'll just say that he's my favorite boy. I guess I'm a lot like Sonic in that regard, because Tails is Sonic's favorite, too!

That said, I do like Sonic himself a lot too, of course. He was my hero as a child and, like I said in another ask, I still think he's right about a lot of things today. I'll always hold special fondness for the blue blur himself.

5.) Favorite female character(s)?

Whisper, my girl Whisper. 💜 Again, this is another I've given reasons for liking recently so I won't get into it all again, but I just love her so much. I am hoping that she manages to catch a fucking break in 2023 because good god she has been through enough. That said, her gf Tangle is a close second because Tangle is just so fun and also great. I really just love them both.

(And if you're looking for games-specific answers: Rouge would be my favorite lady from the games, but I'm also very interested in Blaze. I need to watch playthroughs of her games since I never got to play them, but I really like what I know of her from the IDW comics.)

The way I am with OCs in fandoms is, I make them as I need them for stories. If I'm writing a fic and there isn't a canon character for a role (usually minor) that I need, I'll create a character on the spot to fill that role. I typically don't think of them much beyond that; I give them a name and a base personality and just write them in. For Sonic, you can see this in practice in chapter two of Beyond Oblivion, where I named / created some Windmill Village citizens to give Sonic someone aside from the mayor to bounce off of: Oz the confrontational osprey, Poppy the nervous mouse, and Penny the put-upon store clerk. These characters will likely never show up again (at least I have no plans to revisit Windmill Village at the moment), but they served the purpose I needed them to serve and so they did their job.

With that said though, there is a character that I've already mentioned in chapter 3 of Beyond Oblivion that isn't strictly necessary, and one that I am lowkey thinking could end up having a counterpart in the normal verse, and that's an A.I. that Miles / Tails created / creates to be his personal assistant. In Beyond Oblivion this A.I. is named S.I.M. (which is an acronym for Simulated Intelligence Mainframe), but I think if Tails created this same A.I. on his own in the normal verse, he'd give them a proper name, Simon. (So it still has that simulated intelligence mainframe root, but it's an actual name, because Tails would have no reservations about seeing this A.I. as a person even though they're a program, whereas Miles is very adamant about consciously thinking of S.I.M. as just a program so that he doesn't get emotionally attached. He does anyway but that's beside the point. Also, it opens the possibility for "Simon says" jokes, which is always a plus.)

I don't want to say too much about S.I.M. / Simon here because I'm hoping to show that more in Beyond Oblivion, but I can say that Tails would develop Simon later in life than Miles developed S.I.M. because Miles needed S.I.M. much earlier (and tbh for different reasons) than Tails would need / want Simon. S.I.M. is only ever just a voice, but Simon's displayed form would be a mouse—because, you know, computers have mice, and that's Simon's type of humor. S.I.M.'s pronouns are exclusively they/them, while Simon is more a he/they type. Their personalities are the same in both universes, and while I'm keeping quiet on what that personality is right now, I will say both are very fond of their creator.

But yeah, that's the only OC I have at the moment, and honestly they still formed from a story need (in this case, thinking about Miles in Beyond Oblivion). That's just the way my brain works, I suppose!
