Maureen R replied: "St. Patrick's Day is a family day, starting with donuts, then Mass at St. Colman, one of the oldest churches in Cleveland, that for decades had supported a largely Irish immigrant neighborhood. This Mass is the start of the day for the West Side Irish American Club. The dignitaries and club marching units from pipes and drums to tiny pom pom "Bridgies" march into the church with all the regalia of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. Parts of Mass are read in Irish Gaelic, and familiar Irish songs and readings are shared. The lighting in the church is changed to green uplights and the hall is filled wall to wall with families in Irish sweaters and Irish pride.

After Mass and the marching units parade out of the church, everyone heads to downtown Cleveland for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. and one of the only St. Patrick's Day parades that is always held ON the day.

After the parade, families disperse to the many parties all around town. After marching in the parade, I will head off to entertain the crowds with my band, Ballinloch for the last performance of a two week non - stop Irish adventure."

Early May Moorland Field Trip [Dryburn Moor Night sounds]

Day one / Mon 2nd It's early May 2022 and i'm heading due north from the midlands for a few days of recording in and around the North Pennine moors.

I arrive at my location at 2330 after leaving home at 1800ish with one stop at Tebay services for a coffee and some food. The last leg of the journey was from Penrith across and over the North Pennines towards Allendale, and unsurprisingly it was very dark, windy and ascending; although quite spectacular in its increasing remoteness. After setting up kit and prepping the back of van for sleep and food and living in it for a few days it was later than i'd hoped, meaning not a lot of sleep was to be had, but it's often difficult to sleep after focussing on driving for 5 hours, especially with the anticipation of a new location and soundscape to be recorded!

The plan recording wise was to capture wild soundscapes from a binaural dummy head perspective using a pair of DPA 6060 miniature mics. I also had an alternative backup Rycote blimp with a spaced pair of DPA 4060s and a black stealthy wind jammer, to use if the wind picks up... (Which is likely!)

Day Two / Tues 3rd Mornings of recording sessions are like a kind of military routine - I was up at 0300h/3am and on the Moor by half past. Of course, having thoroughly thought through the pattern of tasks required so that I would be fully prepared and ready to record with minimum fuss!

When I arrived just a few hours earlier under darkness with my only knowledge of the area coming from the study of aerial maps, at ground level it was very much new territory and being a bog moorland and very dark I would have to be careful with my footing. Following a solid track, I make my way down a hill from the small road, gradually banking back up until I see the vague silhouette of what I assumed was one of the two old (and tall) lime chimneys. On approach I realised I was correct, thankfully. Although not knowing exactly where to set up my microphones I see the top of the other chimney so carefully and quietly continue on.

The Quiet

Its incredibly quiet, but there is sound starting to build already: the odd gurgle of red grouse and distant descending calls of curlew, was that a Snipe... I know I can't hang about here deliberating, I need to set and go as soon as possible! This is difficult but with what little information on I have gathered on my surroundings in this dark place, I position the mic stand and go hunker down. My presence did not go unnoticed, with the start of curlew alarming... but this thankfully calmed back down quite quickly; back to the sparse quiet of the nighttime moor.

It's difficult to describe the level of quiet that these moorland areas possess. Hours can pass with no human derived sounds being heard, so no engines or signs of nearby life. There are people living around here, but there's a lot of wild space. This, in theory makes it ideal for wildlife soundscape recording. I say in theory because the moorland terrain is extremely exposed, there are no trees and so nothing to block the winds and often brutal weather systems bellowing over the Pennines. All I can do is hope the wind doesn't pick up too much during my short visit...

After sitting and listening for a few hours the dark of night surrenders to the early morning light allowing for an incredible clear sunrise. And while the recording conditions may not have been perfect, moments like this are special.

4. How long do you lay in bed before you get up?

It depends on when I wake up! Sometimes I wake up at 4am and can’t get back to sleep, so I just stay in bed reading or falling down a YouTube rabbit hole until the kids come in. Usually I’ll get up between 5am and 6am.

7. Do you listen to ASMR?

I tried once when I was away from home because I couldn’t get to sleep but it all kind of weirded me out so I put on a podcast about serial killers and it put me right to sleep 😂

10. Favourite colour aesthetic?

The whole aesthetic thing confuses me - I don’t really understand what it is but I will say my favourite colours are very natural... blues, greens, whites and sunset/sunrise colours... think very beachy

44. What kind of bird do you hear most often outside your door?

Right now it’s cockatoos - they’re very loud! Most of the time it’s starlings. At night it’s curlews (murder birds).

Bird Quest Complete!

Hey pod nerds,

If you were wondering what bird is singing in the background of both @arsparadoxica Episode 16: Greenhouse and @thefarmeridian Episode 3: The Bus Stop, (because why wouldn’t you be wondering something like that?) I’m fairly certain I’ve identified it as the song of a Red-Breasted Flycatcher, Ficedula parva!

Given nothing but the audio recording in the episodes and @mischaetc‘s weirdly specific yet vague intel that the track used “was recorded near the southwestern coast of Spain, sometime between 25-50 years ago,” I managed to track it down by going through a list of birds from the Andalucia Bird Society, using my amateur birder’s knowledge to pick likely bird family candidates, and finding audio of their songs. In the course of my quest to find what I’d started calling the Greenhouse/Bus Stop bird, I came across this incredible site called xeno-canto, where people all around the world upload thousands of recordings of bird songs in a collaborative audio archive. Bless the endless enthusiasm and exhaustive dedication of bird nerds, honestly.

I listened to probably a few hours’ worth of songs there, going through a bunch of recordings of plovers and curlews and thrushes and numerous unfamiliar small songbirds from a continent away. I was lucky to come across an unidentified background recording of the Greenhouse/Bus Stop bird in an entry for what would turn out to be its close relative, the Collared Flycatcher, Ficedula albicollis. Finally hearing an echo of that distinctive two-note song, even unnamed, was electrifying.

I ended up listening to recordings of all 31 species in the genus Ficedula listed on xeno-canto before narrowing it down to the Red-Breasted Flycatcher, but I was still unsure of the identification until I found two recordings of the songs of sub-adult males. Many of the songs I heard seemed more complicated than the two-note song we hear in the podcasts: most of them had a series of shorter single notes tacked onto the end of the repeated two-note run, like the song sung by the mature adult in this video. However, the songs of the younger birds seem to be occasionally simplified to just the two repeated notes, giving us the song of the Greenhouse/Bus Stop bird! I think whoever made the original recording happened to record the song of a juvenile instead of an adult.

If anyone finds a better song match, this bird nerd would dearly love to hear it, but until then, I’m calling this bird a Red-Breasted Flycatcher. Anyway, thanks to the Whisperforge crew for making such beautiful stories and stunning soundscapes that they inspire me to spend several hours of my life chasing down the song of an adorable small European insectivore. @mischaetc keep doing that amazing thing you do with sounds, and hey, I’m ready for my next obscure side quest.

Waking up on Loch Moidart

I’d spent Saturday snowboarding at Nevis Range and the plan was to head out west once more to Ardnamurchan and stay overnight where Loch Moidart meets the Atlantic.

I made my way from the ski area to Fort William after a quick stop in Glen Nevis to watch the final rosé rays of the sun on the snowy mountain peaks. I had to visit the town to stock up on some overnight supplies and stop nearby the train station where I could make use of the wifi and download some podcasts for night time listening.

Once on the road it would be less than a 2 hour drive, but despite the lack of light for photography, I knew I’d make the odd stop to take in the surroundings. The Glenfinnan road is fairly fast, stopping just a couple of times to take in the blowing mountain tops under a full moon that was also reflecting off Loch Eil, where the wind denied a still reflection on its rippled surface. After turning off this main road I passed Lochailort and onto the Atlantic coast where once again I stopped to take in the shadowy shapes of the Islands of Eigg and Rum on the horizon.

The road narrowed and I passed a doe and fawn roe deer in the darkness, I vaguely recognised the road from just over a year before when I had passed in the opposite direction on the way to Arisaig. This time though it was reversed and in darkness, but my phone occasionally announced directions as I made my way through one of the most remote parts of the British Isles. Despite it being remote I passed a few settlements and as I closed in on my destination, notice a few of these roads were private, belonging to local estates, but eventually I found the carpark for Castle Tioram, my destination and sleeping spot for the night.

There was another vehicle in residence in the spot I had chosen, but since we were at the terminus of a rather long single track road, I was going to have to share this spot with neighbours. I don’t mind if they don’t. I parked diagonally opposite from them to maximise space and hopefully not disturb them with closing doors and the like. After a day of snowboarding and driving though, I rather quickly found my eyelids weighed heavy and it wouldn’t be long before I drifted of in the glow from my iPad as I failed to witness the end of another movie.

Cold shivers woke me from a relatively good sleep in the passenger side of the car. I was wrapped in my sleeping bag and I could feel the cold on my legs and feet. I hadn’t resorted to my down jacket in the night so it hadn’t been too bad. When I was awake enough to take note of the time, it was just before 7am. Not bad and not a particularly early start either. The sky was getting lighter and I could see the moon was still up, reflecting across a shimmering bay. I stayed here for a reason, so thought I’d better get myself up and out there and appreciate the view.

I was greeted with a view and a half. Almost clear cool blue skies were trimmed with pink clouds on the horizon and the moon hung low over the small islands in the outlet of Loch Moidart. Further out sat the Island of Muck. And there, surrounded by the still waters of Loch Moidart was Castle Tioram, with a backdrop of a Scottish fjord that looked like it could also have been in the Pacific north west, Vancouver Island or anywhere just as picturesque, they don’t have castles though!  It was incredibly peaceful as I returned from a visit to the car with my camera and tripod. I shot a bit of video as well as the moon over the water, watching its steady progress as it sank into a bed of cloud where the sky met the sea.

I returned to the car to boil up some water for a coffee and the sky lightened. My camp spot in the parking area was surrounded by forest as well as being sheltered under a rocky outcrop so remained in the cold shadows. In contrast, the opposite side on the loch was being lit up by the progression of the sun. Rich copper tones painted the tips of the trees and the bracken covered hill behind, contrasting beautifully against a crisp cobalt sky. Isolated houses were dotted occasionally amongst the trees. Some were lucky enough to have their own boathouses with slipways down to the water. Idyllic accommodation, even more so in the summer I’d imagine, give or take a midge or a million.

After my coffee I made my way along to the Castle itself, which sat a small isthmus which was rapidly revealing itself as the tide retreated. I hopped over the remnant water way separating the castle from the mainland and continued over the sandy approach before climbing amongst the tussocks of grass growing out of bedrock taking me to the level of the ancient building. The castle’s location is its main appeal last the walls themselves are fairly featureless apart from some moulded features on the battlements on the seaward side. It was closed off for renovation with warnings not to enter, so I concentrated on the surroundings. Looking back to the shore a tree covered rocky cliff guarded an opening to Loch Moidart, a handful of tree covered rocky islands populated the waterway with hills rising beyond, the highest peak contrasted the burnt umber with its bright snowy covering. This really did look to me like some Norwegian fjord, or at least what I imagine a small fjord might look like having never been to Norway myself.

I scanned the still waters for life. Every ripple or alert from a bird could be an otter or something more exotic. No extraordinary creatures made an appearance though. Just the odd gull or curlew was seen. The animals were probably still tucked up in bed. The landscape was all I needed. The perfect walk on a crisp winter morning took my mind off the fact there was little snow around for sport and that I wasn’t spending as much time doing what I love snowboarding.

My stroll easily took up the whole morning and it was around noon when I thought I should start my way back through Ardnamurchan and take in the views as I drove up the coast through the beauty of Glenuig, Roshven and Lochailort. The views across the sea to Eigg and Rum were truly stunning with snow capped peaks and russet tones.

I returned to Fort William in strong sunshine and as I passed through Glenfinnan, the massive bulk of Ben Nevis and surrounding mountains looked resplendent in white. Nevis Range and it’s ski slopes looked tempting, but I was too late to make a day’s snowboarding happen. Did I regret it? No, not at all. I’d had some action the day before. Conditions may not have been the best, but my little Ardnamuchan adventure more than made up for it.

After grabbing brunch and editing some shots in Fort William, I then went on to meet friends staying in Glencoe. There may have been a chance that Monday would have opportunities to snowboard. This turned out not to be the case, with high winds, low cloud and rain. No matter, I had my day in the sun the day before.
