ALIGNING GRAFFITI PRACTICE WITH THE CITY OF SYDNEY’S ‘CREATIVE CITY PLAN (2014-2024)’ | Cultural Policy Discussion
This essay argues for the City of Sydney to adopt an open policy toward street art and graffiti. Current policies based on the Graffiti Control Act (2008) fail to engage critically with graffiti practice, expose a desire for control, and miss out on opportunities to align graffiti with broader cultural aims. The research draws on theories about place-making, the creative economy, property relations, and cultural democracy to ponder how graffiti might be incorporated into the Creative City Cultural Plan (2014-2024). In particular, as a networked practice that adapts well to new media, graffiti has the power to reactivate non-places, reveal gaps in policymaking, and add to conversations about creativity in the city. Moving past an arbitrary distinction between street art and graffiti, one celebrated, one scorned, the City should recognise these forms as part of a networked subculture. Repressing graffiti would drive activities underground and create more risks for artists whereas nurturing creative hubs around this practice might help them become drivers of urban growth. Allowing graffiti to evolve over time would pave the way toward cultural democracy and enhance citizen input in policymaking. A mindset for co-existence, then, fosters innovation and connectivity, the basis for a thriving Creative City.

Moderator: Do you regret your actions on January 6th?
Trump: Let's talk about how MILLIONS OF BROWN PEOPLE ARE RAPING AND MURDERING YOU RIGHT NOW, AS WE SPEAK!
Moderator: Okay, but do you regret--
Trump: AND THEY'RE ALSO EATING YOUR DOGS AND DELIVERING TRANSGENDER SURGERIES ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN PRISON WHILE THEY RAPE AND MURDER YOU!
Moderator: But--
Trump: YOU MARXIST!

i wish more educators saw graded participation and presentations as a legitimate accessibility issue.
i just read through the syllabus for the disability studies course i’m taking this semester and there are so many safeguards put in place to make the class accessible, but there’s still an assignment (worth a lot of points) that requires leading a class discussion, and participation in general is graded.
a disability studies course with a thoughtful professor and i’m still fucked because even a person whose job relies on making things accessible doesn’t seem to understand that some of us literally can’t just get up in front of a class and talk.
my avoidance is just as much of a disability as, say, my inattention or inability to write by hand, and those are accommodated just fine. a disability studies course of all things should not be putting me in this position.

The past couple days online have been... interesting. I consider myself a leftist, think capitalism is corrupt, and think that it needs to be seriously reformed/overthrown. I admit that while I've thrown around phrases and terms like "burn it all down" and "the revolution needs to come" out of frustration without actually thinking about what a revolution entails: excellent organization, unity, and strategy to defeat the United States, the world's largest military superpower which has inflicted political and social destabilization across the majority of countries around the world. There also needs to be superb infrastructure and community to support the disabled, elderly, and poor populations who rely on government assistance and programs, healthcare, and accommodations while this so-called revolution rages on.
All I've received from the far leftist movement are lectures from condescending intellectuals who rattle off academic citations regarding ideological theory rather than practical, tangible steps to advocate for change in our local and regional communities. I have not seen one of them actually discuss conversations they've had with their friends, family, or Americans about what they want to see reflected for the future of the country. I have not seen one of them discussed how destructive, detrimental and traumatic a Trump presidency was for social prejudice and morale in the United States. I understand that for many marginalized groups they've been living in a facist state for centuries so the possibility Project 2025 doesn't galvanize them to see the two parties differently, but I don't think it is fair to white leftists falsely equivocate the election of both parties for the entire American population at all??? Or like at least specify the issues you're referring to in which you view both parties as the same?????
Literally one TikTok creator who I used to follow talked about how true leftists are so much better than liberals because they aren't waiting for a presidential candidate to save the world NOW due to the accelerated apocalypse due to climate change but when asked how to change the world they suggest sharing ideas of your future utopia with other leftist groups. How the fuck is sitting around talking about living in a walkable community is great considered "saving the world now"? How are you going to dismantle and restructure American infrastructure to create these communities? How are you going to remove existing racial and social tensions to create a community where everyone lives happily side by side? Do people not consider reality at all?????
And is it not wrong for people to have a fucking sliver of optimism and hope at incremental change that's achieved within the corrupt bipartisan system of American politics, even if they know it's propaganda??? Is it wrong for people to have a singular fucking moment of relief in feeling like their values, beliefs, and lives will be better protected and THEY can advocate for change better??? Is it wrong when there's a couple months until the most pressing election in recent history for people to make the choice they feel will reduce the most amount of harm???

Being a debater is great because people assume you talk about the fiscal policies of Northern Europe or whatnot when you hang out after practice but you actually spend good thirty minutes playing f---, marry, kill: philosophers' edition.

Just a heads up if I see any of you being ableist during dog-button-discourse I'm instant-blocking and also Whim and Biscuit will both hate you.
Dog trainers have a really nasty habit of dehumanizing disabled people. Disabled people are human beings with human needs who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The way a nonverbal person communicates is worthy of respect.
I'm going to be crystal fucking clear about this: equating disabled people to dogs is ableist and dehumanizing. Disabled human beings are not dogs. Nonverbal human beings are not dogs. Do not use disabled people in your dog training metaphors, do not use them to justify your dog training decisions.

So my older brother shared this with my family's group chat:
It's a relatively recent update based on the date at the bottom being this year. Honestly reading through this just... Makes me sad.
People that have transitioned can't be assigned to be teachers, when I imagine so many of them have just as much insight on the gospel as any cisgender teacher in the church. Trans people can't fully participate in overnight mixed-gender activities and can only go to activities that match their assigned sex at birth, even if they would feel more at home among those whose gender matches the one they transitioned/want to transition to. And that's just the beginning of where they can still be part of the church but not fully part of it.
Maybe some bishops will receive spiritual guidance that will make things different for the trans people in their wards than what this outlines. But I imagine that will be the minority of situations...

Why does my family cling to Israel and Israel's continued existence? Simple. You see, when we were being persecuted and killed by the Nazis, and my family was chased out and was stripped of their citizenship, they tried to go to America. Only America turned them away. They had nowhere else to go. No one would accept them. No one wanted them. You know the only place that did? Israel

On the subject of Nathaniel, I think everyone needs to know that he and Aster absolutely have a friends-with-benefits situation going on. More specifically the sort of friends-with-benefits situation where they discuss Warden policy as pillow talk. Sometimes foreplay. Occasionally during sex, which has definitely given them both some weird boners during normal meetings. "Discussing policy" is a euphemism for sex among the Amaranthine Wardens specifically because of these two. Aster insists that creating a euphemism is his greatest achievement and no one can tell if he's joking.

has it ever occurred to anyone that the black and white thinking of anti-/pro- language is a trauma response and we all probably need therapy? and like, life is not actually black and white almost ever??? because human beings are complicated? and forcing yourself to pick a side and draw a line in the sand all the time is probably really bad for our mental health collectively?

Performative activism. Loathe it so much. Because people always claim valuing and respecting and wanting to hear indigenous voices until we actually speak and want to discuss them then there’s not a single rats ass given.

i feel like i should start making more of an effort, when i talk about something in a piece of media being Upsetting to me, to distinguish between 'cathartic' upsetting and 'gave me psychic damage' upsetting. sometimes i mean OUGH OW MY FEELINGS THIS FUCKS ME UP IN A MEANINGFUL AND RESONANT WAY, MY LIFE IS ENRICHED FOR BECOMING AWARE OF IT and sometimes i mean that it is genuinely distressing and i want to shake the creators and ask what the fuck they were thinking
