thinking about the sootopolis sisters. so. some facts.

beverly

her first pokemon was a magikarp she plucked from sootopolis lake with her own hands. her next was a ralts (caught after magikarp had already evolved into gyarados) then a gastly on a trip to johto.

gardevoir (whos male btw) and gengar still live with her in johto, but due to numerous reasons (mainly logistical ones), gyarados currently lives with wallace in hoenn.

despite being the most aggressive sibling and having 3 incredibly strong pokemon, she has no interest in battling and can barely do it.

was the one to first be interested in contests. neither of their parents did them (in fact their dad briefly worked for a gym which is how the family knows juan) and were confused, but let the girls at it.

started at 13. it took a few years to work her way up into the big leagues, but she did and carved a name for herself with her unique style. always the most passionate for contests.

quit them for stellas sake. the media was being so awful to her sister that she rashly quit the scene in solidarity. will say that she never regrets it

didnt stay out of the scene for long. once things died down some, she acted as a mentor and was eventually pulled to head the johto contest committee.

divorced so if youre interested in milfs...

had a sweet whirlwind romance with her prev husband. got married and had kris pretty quickly.

it was actually a decent marriage. it could've lasted. unfortunately, the atlantios family just went through a fuckton of hardships over a long 4 years and it all put such a strain on their marriage that it fell apart. beverly doesn't really hold any hard feelings towards him tho her kids definitely do

her first pokemon was a surskit. theres not many in sootopolis, but she came across one and befriended it. her only other pokemon is a bellossom, caught several years into her career.

her masquerain is no longer alive. bug types live much longer than rl bugs, but rather short lives in comparison to other types in the pkmn world. it died around the time of lisias birth. bellossoms still with her however.

had very poor health as a child. bad asthma plus a poor immune system. it got better as a teenager before nosediving sharply after she got pregnant with lisia

she had a lot complications during her pregnancy and lisias birth. it left her ill for years after, including needing trips to another region to see a specialist doctor. managed to eventually deal with the main problem but it left her with permanent fatigue problems and an even worse immune system than when she was a child

uses a cane to help with stability and fatigue. also has a wheelchair, though it mostly sees its use at home at night.

retired from contests because of lisia, though she'd never phrase it that way.

a man knocked her up and the ensuing media storm over her being a single mother and refusing to even hint at who the father was was too much. she quit and hid as much as possible for the next few years. (not hard considering her illness)

she misses contests a bit, more when the wound was fresh, but really enjoys being a mother and wouldn't trade lisia for anything

alma

found a little azurill in a small pond when watching a contest her sisters were performing at. an azumarill now. the only pokemon she has.

had middle child syndrome bad as a teen lmao

beverly was so strong and cool, stella was so mature and graceful, wallace was the unexpected miracle baby, and then there was alma. She's Just Alma.

followed her sisters into contests because. well. what else did she want to do? contests were....fun. she was....decent at them.

always in her sisters shadows and she hated it. everything she did was always compared to them by critics and fans.

as such, she was the first to quit coordinating. she'd never had the same passion for it as her sisters and it was honestly kind of a relief to let it go.

the only one of the sisters to also try her hand at battling. got 3 badges before deciding it wasnt for her either.

studied under their mother about history and myths of sootopolis but wasn't really interested in that either. wallace showed more aptitude for it and he was 6. story of alma's life smh

went back to school and graduated and met a nice guy and moved to petalburg to help him run his store there. very ordinary, but its what she likes. no drama, no competition.

honestly, distanced herself quite a bit from her family during those terrible 4 years where everything seemed to go wrong. she'd always been the loner of the family and no one ever tried to bring her into the fold so she left them to it.

she regrets that. especially since wallace would later do basically the same thing and it hurt being on the opposite side of the cold shoulder.

tried to keep in touch more after that whole drama. it was difficult since she lived on the opposite side of the region, and even moreso after she had wally who inherited their family's poor health. but she tried.

Their canines r overly sharp and they prolly need braces bc theyre too high up in the mouth so they look like exaggerated fangs- so when they were younger they'd prank ppl n say they were a vampire and threaten/joke to suck out their blood (most often to Noelle, probably).

Hasn't had braces since I think it'd be funny Monsters don't realize its a thing cuz theyre....monsters and fangs/funky teeth are normal LOL

General Opinion over said character:

I really like Kris and I feel bad controlling them bc let the poor kid go!!! Please!! (but also I want to play the game. rip. Sorry bud.) But all in all despite not speaking Kris is very interesting as a character and I love the weird kid energy they have KGNHGKLH I can't wait to learn more about them and the mysteries surrounding them.

Okay, so, he got the first bit rightish: the literal translation of Siôn Corn is indeed “Chimney John”. And, he’s also right that this is a weird aspect of the Father Christmas myth for the Welsh to choose to focus on, since other names are like

Father Christmas. The benevolent old man who encapsulates the holiday of CHRISTMAS

St Nicholas. A literal saint who helped the poor

Santa Claus. A derivation of St Nicholas; see above

Kris Kringle. From the German “Kristkindl”, meaning “Christ child”.

Siôn Corn. Weirdo who enters and exits your house through the chimney.

Really, you’d expect the Welsh to have been Tad Nadolig, for a literal translation of Father Christmas. Buuuuuuut, there’s inevitably more to it than that.

So the modern myth of Santa really is fairly modern, dating to about the 1850s in America. Now, Britain had the older English tradition of Father Christmas at the time, dating from roughly the 16th century, but he was actually very contentious because British Christians historically loved fighting about the Right Way To Perform Christianity without ever reading a single fucking word Jesus actually said, and the Puritans fucking hated him for being pagan and idolatrous or something. Anyway, he was a bit different, and he waxed and waned in popularity until Santa Claus crossed over from the States thanks to Dutch settlers and promptly got merged. 

Anyway, “Christmas-specific gift-giving figure” was something children adopted with glee. Adults enjoyed the mystery aspect. All was good.

But, just as Santa got added to a pre-existing English figure...

Same thing happened in Wales. 

Now, Anglo-Wales were also on the Father Christmas train, but Welsh language Wales had its own shit going on. And yes, I am aware that you people all know about the creepy horse skull Christmas ghost thing, yes, I pick up several hundred new followers every Christmas period as that post does the rounds again, but the Mari Lwyd is more of a mid-winter celebration than a specifically Christmas one - most are done on New Year’s these days. And, naturally, she was not the only bit of Christmas folklore about the place, and that was just as well, because while it’s fairly easy to ascribe Jolly Christmas Gift Giver to Father Christmas, it’s much harder to lend qualities like generosity and Christ-like compassion to, as you yourself once put it so eloquently Maia, an ornery horse-skulled nightmare beast. 

(Side note: JUST IMAGINE if we had tho. “Goodnight, children! Remember to leave out the cheese and cider for Santa Mari. She’ll go through the cupboards for it otherwise. Ooh, is she here?!? I think I hear the sound of bones clacking on the roof!”)

Anyway: another, there was.

So, around Glamorgan/Gwent kind of way there was a local sort of fey spirit thing called, according to the English-language sources from the time, Chimney Jack. Now Chimney Jack falls right into the standard faerie motifs from Welsh domestic life in which you have to do your housework well to be rewarded, and if you don’t you get punished. Like all such creatures, the tales were told to kids to get them to behave. In Chimney Jack’s case, there’s an interesting detail: if you behaved, he would reward you by leaving you a gift of coal. If you were bad, you got nothing.

Wales, of course, was super-poor, so coal was actually a very important gift. But that was subsequently sucked into the bigger myth and turned into the punishment - toys if you’re good, coal if you’re bad. BUT, more to the point, Chimney Jack was also so-named because he was believed to be a faerie that lived in the chimney. If you were REALLY bad he’d throw soot around the house, too, and clog up the flue and make the fire crackle and spit.

But, we therefore have two important elements, you’ll note: he gives gifts, and he lives in the chimney. Much like this zippy new god of children called Santa Claus that we’re importing for Christmas joy, and hey, they are very similar aren’t they? Probs the same thing, we should think. Hey kids, come listen to the tale of  Siôn Corn.

And that’s why we end up with Siôn Corn instead of Tad Nadolig - because our Santa figure doesn’t come from the English tradition. He comes from a tricksy faerie of Welsh provenance called Chimney Jack. 

And yes, I’m pretty sure early pre-mince pie offerings to appease him were cheese.

Just random thoughts/theories on Deltarune (spoilers)

Kris x Ralsei x the player OT3 /j

We all know Ralsei seems to know he is in a video game (mentioning the script, suggesting “Kris” to save or provoking cinematic to talk to Kris without the player around, among other things). We also know he is fond of Kris, which they don’t reciprocate. This lead to awkward situation where they can flirt with Ralsei while they don’t want to. And Ralsei responds positively (being flustered and blushing) nevertheless the flat/confused tone Kris might used when they disagreed with the choice the player made. To prove they don’t have a high affinity with Ralsei, check the healing teas or even the carnival’s choice.

So… what if the crush/attraction/whatever is going on the head of fluffy boi goat isn’t addressed for Kris BUT FOR THE PLAYER THEMSELF. Heck, he didn’t seem at all bothered to the idea his own town is named after the player rather than him, the prince, the fun gang or even Lancer (another friendly local nobility). And no one, excepted the possible “two entities” (depending your point of view), in the intro might know our name. It’s never referenced again, excepted when saving. That’s very weird.

But I also have to admit we don’t know why would Ralsei be infatuated with the player. Is it for similar reasons that Monika in DDLC? Freedom is a big theme in Deltarune after all... But even myself don't buy it. There must be something else. Nonetheless he eagerly wants to be liked by the player (and Kris by proxy).

Else: Ralsei is an old self insert of Kris

Then it would explain the awkwardness when they are together, the strange alikeness between him and Asriel to the point of sharing an anagram name, and the reddish horns (remember the plastic horns Toriel bought for Kris). 

Here, Ralsei wants Kris’s love but more in a worshiper/divinity way? Since he would had been created for Kris’s happiness... and Darkner had been explicitly existing thanks to the Lightners wishes.

It doesn’t necessarily contraindicated or jossed the first theory (he could be pursuing both the player and Kris) but it seems unlikely to be both. 

The Legend: The player is the Angel to banish and Lancer is the prince

Similar to OFF or Oneshot, the player is an entity coming from another world, guiding their “chosen one” with a compelling “voice” for the better... or the worst. The player is the being the more fitting to be the “Angel” (for now) as they also represents a threat to the world(s), or at the very least, Kris.

I’m surprise everyone seems to think the Angel is Noelle: she is an angel, but definitely not an Elderich entity... more like a martyr at worst. Poor sweetie :c

I also really like the idea the real prince of Darkness isn’t Ralsei but Lancer. However, I admit I thought of it just because it could be a nice subversion. I have no actual proof to pursue this theory, save from “Ralsei is suspicious and Lancer a nice peachboy who got a bit too much spotlight to be insignificant.” But it’s nothing concreted. Who knows what Toby has in mind?

Either way, when the ‘Angel’ will be banish, it’ll be the end of the Dark World — and obviously the game itself.

Kris is a well taught teen (or awkward with tities)

On a lighter note, the reason why Kris seem so delight to respond “perish” to Queen might not be because they’re suicidal but just because they didn’t want to answer “bosom”. Heck, if Toriel ever heard about this, they’ll be banish to their bedroom until the end of time. (Thought with the other answer, she mights force them to therapy. Wouldn’t be necessarily a bad thing tho /hj)

Or they’re just being embarrassed by saying it aloud and then it would be pretty funny lmao. They’re okay eating random moss, licking pages and even flirting with anything - but saying “boob”? How dare you, player! Curse you!!

Another funny thing I noticed... When a cinematic is done, most of the time, Kris’ll turn toward the screen and because of his neutral expression, it gives me a “wtf was this bro” look. I found it hilarious.

Miscellaneous - just ideas I hope will happen/be confirmed:

The ending of the weird route will lead to a final fight with Susie (with or without Ralsei) and it’ll be heartbreaking as Susie will acknowledge there is something possessing her friend.

Regular road will instead lead to a fight with the original vessel we have created back chapter 1. And it’ll be messed up in a hilarious way. 

The whole fun gang will learn the truth about the video game situation they’re in.

Close to the end, Kris will gain enough freedom to talk directly to the player and give them a “why you suck” speech. It would be awesome if they get an actual face, like Susie and Ralsei in their dialogue, while doing so. They’re also probably insecure at the idea their new made friends preferred the controlled Kris over the real Kris. 

If not craft for weapons, the clear crystals will give an extended ending/epilogue of the normal/pacifist route (similar to OFF, but less random and goofy).

I just despised the idea Kris being evil, don’t @ me if you are comparing them to Chara (”they got red eyes and are acting weird with a knife”) only to justify the bad things the player did. They are troubled and misguided, and I hope Toriel keeps in check their, uh, “knife hobby”. But they’re certainly not a creepy killer. Just a creepy, well meaning teen.

Regarding the red eyes thing, maybe they are red because “eyes are windows to the soul”...?

Ralsei’s talk with Kris out of focus will be revealed, and it was something related to making fountains/the prophecy’s steps including the part of the player.

Aight! Thanks for the ask 💖. First DR, then Portal.

DeltaRune: a game I'm rather neutral about, but the one which I enjoy nonetheless.

The first character I first fell in love with: Susie. Was excited for her ever since she was just a neighbour's daughter mentioned by that one Clamgirl character you encounter via the FUN-related event in UT. She was the highlight of the 1st chapter for me, and in the 2nd the love got even stronger. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Berdly, this poor little dum-dum bastard... Also Lancer, to a degree - he's just a kid, your honor. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Rouxls, Jevil, Ralsei... Found the 1st chapter's Darkners kinda underwhelming in general. The character I love that everyone else hates: ...There are people who... hate DR characters? Why? Though if I had to choose, Queen, I guess? The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Got severely disappointed in Ralsei's portrayal in 2nd chapter. He was more interesting in the 1st one, even though I wasn't a full-blown fan even then. The character I would totally smooch: Kris. Platonically, if they agree to be smooched. And provide them with hot cocoa and a blanky afterwards. As a fellow member of "sleeping in class and barely communicating with classmates" club, I know they deserved it. The character I’d want to be like: The original starwalker. Dead serious. The sheer confidence they radiate is off the charts. The character I’d slap: Spamton, as a self-defence measure. He's a fun fellow and a great character, but the way the whole fanbase is oversaturated with him gets overbearing (no shade, he's just got too much personality to handle in large doses). A pairing that I love: Susie/Noelle, because it's the cheesiest and most vanilla in the best way possible. Also saw Queen/Spamton once; it was... interesting, if only because it reminded me of certain other pairing, though I feel I'll never respect myself again if I ever catch myself think about the former in any serious capacity. A pairing that I despise: Kris/Berdly is kinda cool, but I think it contradicts and even undermines canon when interpreted romantically. They're 100% besties and speedrunning rivals tho, that's for sure.

Doug also gets the Kris treatment (as does Chell, though I doubt she'll accept direct help). The character I’d want to be like: Role models? In this game? Lmao. Saying "Chell" doesn't count, it's a copout, everybody wants to be like her. The character I’d slap: Cave "OSHA representatives DNI" Johnson - he even gets a bald head later in life, perfect for slapping! And, of course, Wheats. Wheats doesn't get from me unharmed, ohh no. A pairing that I love: *chants erratically, banging two pans together* WheatDOS, WheatDOS, WheatDOS till the day I die. Rickley was also fun while it lasted... Ooh, and Wheatley/Curiosity! No pattern detected, wdym, I don't just want him to be happier by any means. A pairing that I despise: Chelley. Just... god, no. Why. And, to a lesser degree, Caveline: I get why it works for most, but my Cave allergy is just that strong. idk anything about the grace period for deltarune u can just keep this ask in the attic until that’s over.. anyway.. i really liked chap 2 i played it in one sitting 😭 the rpg combat is enjoyable enough and just the right amount more complex than the undertale combat is, although not very difficult. very touching power of friendship moments minus that fucking bird man. some of the dialogue felt quite fandom tropey and surface-level, and queen’s lines (love her tho) were hit or miss for me. i think the biggest frustration i have with it is all the useless random encounter characters clogging up your world 😞😞 there’s only so many wacky one-liners toby can give them and i am not invested enough to care! also some of those designs are uglie!! there are better ways to make a world feel real and lived in. same thing happened with undertale.

BUT it was a great time! i liked the juxtaposition between the ultimately harmless antics and charming banter with the gang and queen, and the more sinister plot going on in the background. most obviously in the ending. toriel and susie making a pie while kris RIPS OUT THEIR SOUL….spoiler warning.. did u see the theory that the soul aka red heart is you the player operating kris the vessel? i’m definitely not a theorist but i like seeing all the loose plot ends i’m having a good time. i love noelleeeeee 💞💞💞💞and i liked susie a lot more this chapter. when ralsei taught her a healing spell 😖😖 i still don’t really care about ralsei though 😓

i also played it in one sitting it was so GOOD. i don't care that it was 2 am here when it was released i wasss ecstatic and the game was so fucking GOOD tonby the fox delivered!! it was so so worth the wait! the music was so much better than in chapter 1 imo, like... my castle town? the cyber fields theme? the queen's fight? spamton g spamton??? rouxls' "fight"?? BANGERS. i only see bangers. the new gameplay mechanics were also very fun!! i for one kinda struggled with the mice puzzles but not nearly as much as that one section with the traffic jams where you have to go down and back up or whatever. what the hell was that? i'm surprised i actually got past it. i loved the parts in cyber field though where you had to move on beat with the music that was sooo fun!! more of that! i prefer the fighting system in undertale ngl but it's mostly bc the undertale bosses are... just so good. the one boss who rivalises for now to me is queen, although rouxls is also very fun.

as for the story itself... i liked it :) susie & noelle are fucking ADORABLE. i think they deserve to be happy forever like not even together just individually as characters they're the fucking best. susie's grown so much that's my girl... wough... ralsei i do like but... i don't trust him :D i don't think he's evil but he knows too much and tells us too little until he can't keep it for himself and i don't like that. like bro you're gonna get us in trouble stop. but ALSO some ppl speculate that himself is being misled and that the fountains wouldn't bring the roaring, which is an interesting theory. (also i miss lancer being more relevant)

uhh kris is... well... kris... :)... yeah i did hear about that theory i'm in a discord server where ppl have been going on and on about theories since the game dropped LMAOO we're all insane. um. my personal theory is that there's another knight, or that kris is at least also influenced by an "evil force" or whatever, and we're the good force influencing them bc otherwise they're just a normal albeit mischievous kid. and the stretch part is that uhhh there's two knight pieces on a chessboard, ik this isn't about chess at all but king of spades does tell you at the end of chapter 2 that you'll meet a more powerful foe = the queen, coincidentally in chess the queen is stronger than the king. hmmmmmmmmmmm. lmao i don't think my parallel here is right but it's fun to think about anyway

hmmm this one is tough cuz when i really love a player i end up sorta following the team and want them to win so my guy can be happy. i guess i will go with cole hamels of all people cuz im still into him but i pay very little attention to the al in general so i never actually watch his starts unless its in the postseason (which as u can imagine is lots of fun lmao). on second thought i think alex cobb also counts for this since i saw him pitch in person and rly enjoyed that experience but dont keep an eye on the rays at all

tony watson: like seriously can we pls trade him now??? hes just so...bland and his poor closer performance has made me even more impatient with him. like dude hes a LEFT HANDED PITCHER and i dont care for him, that shows how much of a problem this is

gerrit cole: unpopular opinion but hes like...the Poor Man’s Ace??? like i dont expect the pirates to ACTUALLY have a real ace because of their circumstances and because theyre the pirates but it really annoys me when ppl call him an ace. hes not a bad pitcher technically and i wont deny that his stats are good (how can i lmao) but hes inconsistent and the way he often works himself up gets on my nerves because it doesnt actually benefit his performance at all

i used to think i hated the cards but it was a sort of halfhearted “ew, theyre the enemies” kinda thing so now that the cubs have totally taken over that category the cards are just like...these dudes in the bg with grichuk and yadi and michael wacha. now if we get into a team im reluctantly rooting for, thats the giants for sure. theyve gone down quite a bit in my rankings over the past two years and i was so annoyed that they beat the mets in the wc last season but eh derek law is precious, im in love with matt moore and then theres mark so i cant root against them, not with my fellas around!!!

tossup between aaron nola and daniel mengden. mainly im excited to see what both of em can do now that theyre coming back from meh seasons. im a lil more scared about nola since theres always the chance he’ll end up even more hurt and have to sit the season out, but i cant help being excited about him because i love watching him pitch so much. then theres danny who...well honestly he was kind of terrible but i think it was a terrible that can be easily remedied by some prudent adjustments so i have high hopes for his season

see, this one’s hard bc caprice generally does like people; she’s inclined to see the good in everyone, and she goes out of her way to look for it. i don’t know if she would ever have the opportunity to meet zak gramarye, or become close enough to apollo/phoenix/trucy/valant to hear much about him, but i could definitely see her disliking him, from what information she could potentially find out. of course, as a fellow performer  ( not of the same art, of course )  she would still definitely respect him in a professional aspect, and she would hands-down agree that he is very skilled as a magician and performer.

idk. the only person he really admires is jake marshall, who he would also enjoy as a person, so… idk. i’m gonna guess probably some other drummer/musician in general that he’s run into during his time in the gavinners? because i could definitely see him admiring a musician of some sort for their ability, whether it be singing or playing drums or whatever it happens to be, but not being able to stand being around them. maybe they’re a jerk, or ego-centric, or have a poor sense of humor, i’m not sure.

caprice is probably a big social media presence; she posts stuff about all the other gavinners a lot; and runs a youtube account on top of having public twitter/snapchat/instagram/tumblr/facebook, probably. klav’s probably the only other one that’s even close to as active as her? so she’s probably got a big following that see the things she posts, and i think she’d use social media as an outlet to discuss her relationship  ( or, more specifically, lack thereof )  with her parents, and/or talk about her relationships with her exes as a way of maybe helping out others in similar positions? even if it’s just little messages like  “ never, EVER, let someone take advantage of you. nobody has any right to do that to you ”  or spread positivity like  “ daily reminder that you are loved and beautiful and you deserve only the best! ”  and i’d like to imagine that, maybe when she’s out in this little hole-in-the-wall cafe in LA that she loves, another customer recognizes her, and is like  “ hey, thanks for saying that stuff, ”  maybe tells her that they also have family problems/abusive ex-partners or have depression and that her messages help them out a lot. maybe caprice buys them a coffee, sits down and talks to them about both of their struggles for a while. maybe she learns their name, maybe she doesn’t, but she just wants this stranger to be happy, and she’s glad to help them get there in whatever ways she can.

it’s not very original, but i’m betting it’s not too much of a surprise that kristoph is coming up. klavier  ( at least my version of him )  doesn’t really talk about kris very much  ( the two people that he would talk to him about are probably caprice and daryan ), so i doubt valentino was really expecting kristoph to be the way he was? valentino probably showed up at klavier’s to give him a ride or smth and i’m sure he was surprised by how coldly kristoph probably treated him. i feel like valentino would be that kind of a person to get pretty good reads on people so. i bet he was not a fan.
