I mentioned I was going to try some games I hadn’t played much or at all yet this year to reduce my backlog, so my latest choices are old, but also new. Sort of!

First up is Portal with RTX!

It’s great looking, but until you directly compare it with the original, you probably don’t even notice because it came out so long ago! You need to set your graphics settings correctly for your particular card, or else you’ll suffer horrendous stuttering & crashing issues after a few minutes. While it was much worse at launch, you must also ensure your drivers are updated or else it’ll refuse to start. But when you get things working, it’s Portal! Just prettier!

It’s free for owners of the classic, so it doesn’t cost extra to check it out. It’s set up as DLC (that doesn’t appear to be running on Source 2), although it’s standalone, so you don’t need to install both versions. It’ll get it’s own Steam entry in your library, and you play and install it from there.

The final thing I have to note is that while it’s designed around NVIDIA technology, it will still run with Intel and AMD graphics chipsets; though without DLSS rendering, your framerates will suffer, perhaps to unplayability. The optimization in general is rather lacking, and these sort of janky issues are why I’d only give this a 78 or so out of 100 rating for a game I’d otherwise rank as a mid to high 90′s masterpiece like it’s first release.

Have any of you tried running Portal RTX yet?

The log said "vulkan extension VK_KHR_ray_query not supported."

Doesn't vulkan upgrade with the gfx driver? I just got their most recent "game ready driver" that specifically supports portal rtx; I have a geforce gtx 1660 which has 6gb vram and a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6 core 3.6GHz

Lot of Valve news :)

1.) Portal RTX released December 8th, since then people have found many secrets hidden around the game such as codes to alternate cube skins and old signs becoming readable. Things are still being found so I'll link them as I see them!!!

2.) Portal 2 was updated and we now have the uncompressed radio jingle!!!

3.) In an interview with DYKG recently, Erik Wolpaw said he was open to doing Portal 3 and started writing a rough story with Jay Pinkerton. They were going to see if they could turn it into a project but Valve is busy at the moment so they aren't able to yet.

4.) Unfortunately Valve didn't announce anything at the Game Awards (even though they did give out a bunch of Steam Decks) but they're still working on Neon Prime and it is apparently Citidel which is the newest Half-Life game they'd been developing.

5.) The Swissmass update has released for TF2! And this month they've been releasing updates like crazy (4 as of the 10th!) And today and tomorrow (10th + 11th) TFConnect is holding charity livestreams with the voice actors! They are also giving away various signed TF2 merch, biggest one being a TF2 monopoly board!!

6.) This one isn't as much as Valve news but Turtle Rock Studio's Left 4 Dead spinoff Back 4 Blood had a new DLC release which is pretty cool :)
