The inspiration behind this post is a text my friend sent in a group chat: “Be ce ta na uni” meaning Bê, are you at uni (university)? I saw this and felt proud of how much Portuguese I’ve learnt because honestly it is a difficult language.

Native English speakers have trouble remembering the difference between there, they’re, and their.

Native Portuguese speakers have a similar struggle of their own: porque, por que, por quê, and porquê.

Porque – Because

Por que – ‘Why’ when used in the start of a question (Why weren’t you at school?)

Por quê – ‘Why’ when used at the end of a sentence (e.g. Atrasaram por quê? [Why are you late?])

Porquê – Used as a noun and appears accompanied by a determiner (an article, for example). (e.g. “Queria saber o porquê de sua tristeza para poder ajudá-lo” => "I wanted to know the reason for his sadness so I could help him”)

I love that Death is female in Sandman. As a Portuguese-speaker it bugs me to no end when people make Death male in Anglophone stories because in my mind Death should be female (as both “death” and “life” are female nouns).

Every time I come across a male depiction of death I grit my teeth and my inner four-year-old goes “You’re telling the story WRONG.”

I am here to warn you again to learn polite ways to talk about basic bodily functions in your target language — even the embarrassing ones like peeing and pooping. Learn them and practice them A LOT! These phrases should come naturally to you even in your worst moment.

You absolutely do not want to be like me and try to reassure your very traditional and well-mannered Portuguese mother-in-law that your newborn is only crying because “o bebé precisa de cagar” (the baby needs to take a shit) because you are so sleep deprived that you can’t remember the more polite “o bebé precisa de fazer cocó” (the baby needs to poo).

I finally was able to get in some studying ( Brazilian Portuguese). Tonight I decided to read my favorite book in Portuguese.✨O Alquimista ✨. I used a combination of context clues, dictionary translations and the audiobook ( read in the native languages of course). It was tough but I managed to translate the first page without using my English copy. That’s a win for me 👍🏽!

Eventually I’ll share more of my recourses I’m using to study this beautiful language 🇧🇷!

Did you know that...

"The @ symbol, which we call "at" and which integrates the electronic address of any person on the planet, has its origin in Latin.

It appeared in the Middle Ages, when monks who copied texts and documents created symbols to replace letters, words and proper nouns, making their work easier. For instance, to replace the Latin word et, they created another symbol, interlacing the two letters: the ampersand (&).

Using the same interlacing resource, they replaced the Latin preposition ad (in house of) with the symbol @. Often used in accounting, the @ moved to the typewriter keyboard. And in 1972, American programmer Ray Tomlinson took advantage of the symbol to create the first electronic mail system."
