Is there a positive argument favoring a criticizer?
Tumblr media
The word criticism – isn’t it always associated with negativity?
Whenever this word is used doesn’t our brain automatically creates the image of a person who is badgering us? Is that the truth, or, are we escaping from reality? Allow us to state that this is merely one side of the coin!
What could be the other angle to consider regarding a criticizer?
Consider the situation in reverse. What if the criticizer has noble intentions and is trying to point us toward personal improvement?
Advice from a mystic poet and saint
Kabir, the 15th Century Indian poet and saint, in one of his writing guides:
निंदक नियरे राखिये, आँगन कुटी छवाय |
बिन पानी बिन साबुन, निर्मल करे सुभाव ||
Ok, agreed this is Hindi. Literally translated it means:
We shall keep the criticizer closest to us by constructing a hut in our courtyard. As even with soap or oil the criticizer cleanses our character.
Such is the worth of a criticizer in our overall personal development. However, we shall consider the criticism with an open and positive frame of mind. And evaluate it objectively to derive value out of the words.
Does it mean that every criticism adds value to our personality?
No not at all! Criticism is of two types Constructive or Positive a Destructive or Negative.
Protecting ourselves from the effects of Destructive Criticism: We interact with multiple people during the course of our life. And like everything else some interactions may be loaded with negative criticism directed at us. Certainly, the criticizer may be trying to beat-us-down.
It is essential to protect ourselves from this. Because this can lead to creating inaccurate notions and ideas. Which in turn may lead us towards a wrong direction of personal development.
Thereby, hurting us in multiple ways, say, career, self-esteem, social life, mental well-being etc.
But the question is how to differentiate?
The differentiation lies in the intent and following pointers help in differentiating:
Noble intent: In case a person wishes us well. Then the criticism would be presented with examples of the specific behavior. Moreover, the criticizer may also suggest methods to improve the particular personality drawback.
Criticizers frame of mind: If the criticizer is not in a positive frame of mind, then how can you receive positive criticism? Be aware of the criticizers frame-of-mind indicators, like anger, depression, frustration, etc.
Opinionated criticizer: Won’t we agree that such people might have a skewed or distorted view of the world? Thereby, they would be analyzing us from their distorted perspective. Hence, consider the criticism from them very cautiously.
Criticizer under the influence: Any person under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any other substance may not be in their senses. Hence, be very careful! As we all know that people may utter words in this state which they might not in a sober state.
Competitors: Alas! The modern world and the rat race. Do you think someone who is in competition would mean well! More often than not, No would be a simple logical conclusion.
Criticism in public: How often a person who criticizes in public would have noble intention? We all would agree that a feedback is best shared in private, better, still if it is one-to-one.
Habitual Praise: A person who is habitual in praising may not be praising but deploying flattery. But why? They may be having some ulterior motive and some personal gains on their mind.
Habitual criticizer: People who crib about everything in the word, can they be called positive? This again is a category of whom we shall be extremely cautious.
These are a few pointers towards identifying the positive criticism.
Positive criticizer identified Now what?
Follow the advice of saint Kabir. However, you may not construct a hut in your courtyard! The constructive criticizer is a pathway towards an improved personality, and glory. Moreover, it reduces your friction with the world, thereby improving your mental state and life force.
As an end note, we may summaries that first identify the constructive criticizer. Thereafter, derive all the positivity you can from the feedback received.
May your path to self-improvement begin!

Sometimes I wonder what Jiang Cheng could've become if his parents didn't instill a mix of "crippling fear of failure" and "impossibly high standards" in him. Cuz like, his dad was holding him to the vague standard of being as good as wwx, his mom yelling at him whenever he goofed around like wwx, and then both of them expressed disappointment when he's less successful than wwx. The thing both of them seem to ignore though is that wwx got where he is entirely because he had the freedom to fuck around and find out- he trained tirelessly because he made training fun for himself, he was innovative as a cultivators because he experimented and persisted through failures, and he was able to act in line with the Jiang clan moto because his actions had less political pull than members of the main family. Jiang Cheng on the other hand- if he fucked around he got told to "stop stooping to the level of servants." If his achievements were lesser than wwx's, he got either dismissed by his dad or yelled at by his mom to try harder. And if he picked fights with the Wens, they'd have an excuse to destroy his clan. Like ya- no shit that'd create an adult who's terrified of failure.
The kite game serves as such a good metaphor/embodiment of this set back- with Jiang Cheng never being able to shoot as far as Wei Wuxian because he pulls back and shoots closer the second he misses.
And its sad too because he's shown to be pretty brilliant when he's in "fuck it, we ball" mode. Like, when he's not freezing up, he manages to pull off things like rebuilding his entire clan from the ground up, leading armies and taking back territories from the Wens, and I'm fairly sure he's the only character we see counter the Lan music cultivation techniques (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that last one. Also feel free to add any of the other cool shit he did that I'm blanking on at the moment, cuz I know I'm forgetting something).
That being said- even with his anxiety, he's still one of the top cultivators. Imagine what a force of nature he'd be if he could sustain "fuck it we ball" mode

I know Toy Story 4 is not really loved by the masses, but I can’t help admitting that I’m that person who loves it just as much as the trilogy. I was really excited about it back in 2019 and even had a little bit of hyperfixation on it. I really adore the concept of lost toys who live on their own. As much as Woody’s choice in the end was unexpected, I think it opened big possibilities for post-canon ideas. Like this one! I decided to design his possible appearance after a couple of years of living outside with Bo. Description under the cut!
I noticed what was missing from those few fanarts on events after the end of Toy Story 4 that I found on the internet. Bo Peep is all so cool and fancy with her hook, raincoat and all sorts of useful thingies that she carries with her, and Woody is just clean and unscathed, as if he just yesterday got out of a dry and warm room. Naaah he wouldn’t stay like this for long 😆
Because what is lost toy’s life? Dirt, unforeseen damage and the need to periodically fight off stray animals. Moreover, we already know that Woody has a tendency to get into troubles. Moreover, he is a rag doll — that is, more than Bo is vulnerable to problems like unstable humidity, getting stuck somewhere with his limbs and getting attacked by cats / dogs / raccoons / whatever else they can encounter. He should become as hardcore as Bo after a couple of years, because otherwise there is no way to survive in this world.
The “raincoat” is of nylon, most likely cut out parts of an umbrella that someone conveniently lost in the park during stormy weather. The trick is that it’s waterproof, since when you are made out of natural fabric, it's important not to get wet as much as possible. Moreover, Woody is quite old, and he should be concerned about the condition of his fabric if he does not want to literally fall apart after a couple of years of such adventures.
The holster is used as a pocket for small things, here it’s used for matches and paper clips, which can be useful in different situations. For matches, a striking surface from a matchbox is attached to the outer side of the right boot. This will allow to quickly light a match by yanking a foot down while holding match to it and thus minimize extra full-body movements, which can be useful in an emergency situation. I think that this can be effective not only for lighting up spaces, but also for scaring away animals, especially small ones like rats.
The hook is a pencil and a fishhook with a broken tip, strapped with duct tape. Basically an analogue of Bo’s hook but made from improvised materials. As we have already seen in her example, it is an excellent utility for crossing various obstacles and, if necessary, for self-defense.
Stitches and scuffs. Both Bo Peep's arms were broken off and are taped back. That means, free living involves the regular risk of losing limbs. Even in an antique store, Woody got his foot stuck somewhere several times, which suggests that either himself or with the help of some stray animal he lost one or another limb and had to sew it back on his own or with Bo’s assistance. He will have to overcome his fear of being broken and accept this as a new part of his existence.
These were general notes on this sketch! Perhaps I will continue to develop this idea in order to find some new interesting solutions.
