Ace's All Time Best Fic Rec List March 2025: Sanders Sides
I'm just going to borrow the format I've been using for the other fandoms I rec fics in. These are just fics I really liked and want other people to read. I didn't start taking note of them when I started reading so I might have missed some. If a fic isn't on here it doesn't mean that I don't like it, and please feel free to rec me fics!
One thing to note is that the way I tend to read fics is to pic a tag or relationship or character etc. and filter by date posted, ascending on ao3 so I start at the beginning and work my way to more recent fics and then obviously any on Tumblr I simply read if they manage to find me. Tumblr search is not fantastic. That is to say, most of the fics currently on my list are going to be older. Also if the rating is M or higher, I have that listed in my little description of it so you'll know before clicking.
Also, also! I tried to only have one or two from the same author so there are likely other works by the people who wrote these that I liked but didn't list, I just didn't want this to be three miles long, yk?
And last little blurb, I try to do these once or twice a year with different fics on each list, but I always use the aatbfrl tag so you'll be able to search my blog for them.
Without further ado: The list!
Btw, there's no specific link I'm adding to this entry other than to the blog, but if you somehow haven't seen @illogicallyinclined's hockey AU I need you to get out from under the rock you've been calling shelter, and I mean this with all of the love in my heart.
Lie With Me- Both Janus and Patton need therapy. If you want to actively be dealt psychic damage, this is a good one.
Bad Idea- Roman and Janus are fwb and aren't supposed to catch feelings. Well guess what? Rated M for iMplied sexual content.
No Need To Knock- Roman reaches out a hand and Virgil takes it. Very sweet besties moment.
Florida Man Cannot Be Contained- "Contrary to popular belief, Remus is not the menace of the friend group. It's Patton." Author is correct.
Friendly Neighborhood Criminals- Patton gets adopted into a trio of criminals who took one look at his life and said 'You live like this? Well we can't in good conscience rob you now.' and decided to make him their pet project. (WIP)
once you're in the hive, the other bees assume you're supposed to be there- "Virgil accidentally gets absorbed by his best friend's brother's polycule." That's the official tag line and what more do you need, really? (WIP)
Love is a Beach- Moceit fake dating your ex that you're still in love with bc you didn't tell your friends you broke up yet and you're all going on a trip together. This could not possibly go wrong in any way. (WIP)
Clutters of Creativity- Roman clutters (the speech disorder) and this is how I learned that I too clutter which alone makes it worth sharing, but this is also cute as hell. Remus and Logan are v supportive.
Snap- Roman angst hurt/comfort Roceit&creativitwins we don't have to talk about how much I related to this one, but if you want to have a good cry, this one's for you.
The Only One that Knows- A lot of trigger warnings, but Logan is a scientist at a shady organization that burned down and the experiment he was managing starts acting up in his home. I think about this all the time, just the way it's written it's soooo good. Rewired my brain. Rated M for Mlots of gore/blood/body horror and Mental health problems and Major character death.
i picture it, soft, and i ache- Janus falls in love with Patton and has a time about it. And then he has a different time about it. V cute with just the right amount of angst.
Silence- Selectively mute Logan and extremely anxious Virgil work through some stuff and it's cute or whatevah. And maybe I relate a little too much but it's fine, don't worry about it.
Cracks in the Ceiling- Logan helps Virgil and they're just besties and I love them.
Mission Status: Sick!- Inspired by the hockey AU, I'm just going to copy paste the tagline bc I think you'll understand. "'It's a good thing that my homosexuality is stronger than my pride', Virgil thought as he opened a capri sun and violently squeezed it onto his sheets." Analogical.
glow like a fireflower- Deceit is a dork. Roman is... also a dork. They're dramatic and silly and working through some stuff and Remus has to hear about it but he gives great advice (lie).
Noi Abbiamo Un Problema- LAMP soulmates with a side of dukeceit. Virgil is the last to join the group but they seem to be expecting a fifth... who is also Virgil. They're a little dense and Virgil is anxious and Remus and Janus are real ones. I love Virgil's mom.
like copper and gold- Rated E for explicit sex and a lot of it. I fucking bawled dude. This fic tore my heart out and then put it back in ever so gently. More of Deceit making bad decisions. roloceit.
The Gold of Your Heart- Look, I read this whole thing a while ago and I still think about it so I feel like it's worth adding to the list. Deceit's name is Tony. A bunch of OC sides and headcanons in here but they're very fun and interesting. 200k+ Roceit slow burn.
Distant Stars Clearly Shining- Prinxiety sci-fi AU featuring smut it's a 10k one shot with significant plot and world building.
Eustress and How to Manage It- Ok, so they're dorks. Prinxiety being adorable dorks. So fluffy. (There's a spicy sequel out there too.)
Help In Unlikely Ways- My boy Janus is just doing his best oml. He's bad at it.
I'm In Love With A Fairytale- Look, it's 117k. And it's fun. Well I mean it's really angsty, but that's fun for me. It takes place in the imagination. Look at it. Rated M for violence.
Hurt, And How We Grow Past It.- I remember reading this when it first came out. Just a little Janus angst as a treat.

Fander Fic Rec Friday Sides Suggestions Sunday (#37)
(Down to Earth Drama - Human AUs)
Kiss and Tell by Greenninjagal High School AU (Analoceit) Rating: NR It starts when Logan gives his boyfriend's ex permission to kiss him during a game of spin the bottle. (Except it doesn't—of course it doesn't—there's far too much history for it to be that simple.) Notes: The amount of dramatic emotional tension in this, my god.
The I Promise series by GiveMeMyOwn Human AU (Gen, Logicality) Rating: G Logan and Patton weren't expecting their adoption of Virgil to be simple, not when the boy clearly had his challenges. But they definitely weren't expecting the harried teen that showed up at their door, insisting (despite everything they had been told) that he was Virgil's older brother. (Janus might have made the mistake of agreeing to be separated for his brother's sake, but he was not going to stand by and let himself be erased from Virgil's life.) Notes: This one kicked me in the teeth with emotions.
A Kind of Understanding by Fangirlwriting Human AU (Gen, background Prinxiety) Rating: G Remus gets a job babysitting a kid for some extra cash, he wasn't expecting any surprises. "It’s just one little girl, anyway. How hard could it be?" (Spoilers...) Notes: In which Remus winds up a supportive older-brother figure to Janus the tiny trans menace. Their friendship in this is so sweet.
Roomies by edupunkn00b College AU (Intruality, Logince) Rating: T Patton was supposed to be rooming with Roman when college started. Unfortunately, plans changed, and it looked like Patton might be left handling college (and a lot more on top of that) entirely on his own. At least until Roman's brother unexpectedly steps in. Notes: So many feels in this one. (Roman's so oblivious that it should probably be illegal.)
how to tell if you're in love by aliferously High School AU (Loceit) Rating: T Declan realizes that he's fallen for his best friend at the worst possible time. It seems pointless to even think about trying to tell him when he can't even figure out how'll say goodbye... Notes: In which life is complicated and sudden feelings might be the least of anyone's problems...
persistent ghosts (sing of home) by angelsdemonsducks Human AU (Dukeceit) Rating: T Months after his disappearance, Janus is declared dead. A funeral is held and they all try to move on, which isn't easy, but at least they have each other to lean on. (Of course, healing from loss becomes a lot more complicated once it turns out that Janus isn't dead.) Notes: This one is a rather heavy one (warnings for mentions of kidnapping and torture), but ultimately has a hopeful happy ending.
WIPs
Something Worth Stealing by Jungle321jungle Human AU (Analogical) Rating: NR Moved to desperation after taking over care of his young nephew, Virgil makes the mistake of trying to steal from his boss. Fortunately, when he gets caught, Logan proves to be both understanding and lenient. Now he's working more hours and for more pay as nanny to his boss's sons. Notes: This is a really good one.
once you're in the hive the other bees assume you're supposed to be there by PaigePenn Human AU (LMP, Dukeceit, Moceit) Rating: T One night spent over at an acquaintance's house after a party turns into another, the inescapable gravity of hospitality, company, and free food making it harder to leave each time. And in a household with this many moving parts, it's easy to lose track of the fact that he was practically a stranger at the start. Notes: Or, how Virgil moves in with his best friend's brother's polycule kind of on accident.

Love is a Beach
Chapter 2
Chapter 1
Patton and Janus broke up months ago. The problem? They still haven’t told their friends, and their annual beach trip is looming. Not wanting to break the news and ruin the vacation, they come to an…unconventional agreement.
Pairings: Moceit, background Prinxiety
Content Warnings: Drinking/flashback to underage drinking, drunkenness, breakups, lmk if i missed anything!!
Word Count: ~2100
Author’s Note: The second chapter is here!! Writing the flashback in this chapter made me miss freshman year of college so bad actually i need to go back i fear.
~
Janus stood in the emptiness of the master bedroom and stared at the space where Patton had been. The late afternoon sun spilled across the polished hardwood floor, painting the room in a hazy gold. Muffled from downstairs, he could hear him telling Virgil that he would cook after all tonight, which didn’t surprise him in the slightest. He knew from six years of being in a relationship with the man that he cooked under stress. Memories of coming home to their apartment to find Patton in the kitchen surrounded by trays upon trays of cookies came flooding back to him, and his heart gave a painful tug.
He blew out a careful, measured breath and sat on the corner of the bed. He hadn’t been lying—Patton really was a terrible actor, which provided two massive problems for Janus: one, because they had to keep the charade up all week, and two, because Janus secretly found Patton’s complete inability to lie one of his most endearing qualities.
Really, this had been a terrible idea to begin with, but when he had come over to the apartment to pick up his things, he couldn’t help but notice the deep circles under Patton’s puffy red eyes, his unkempt hair, his rumpled shirt. No matter how upset with each other they still were, when Patton had turned to look at him, the only thing that he wanted to do was close the space between them, take him into his arms, and smooth down his hair. Even now, he hated seeing him so upset. And so, he did the only thing that he could think to do:
Propose the world’s worst plan.
They still hadn’t told the others about the breakup yet. It was getting to the point where it was starting to worry Janus, so he could only imagine how much it was destroying Patton. If the bags under his eyes were any indication, he had been turning the question of how to tell them over and over in that worrywart way of his. And so, the plan was concocted: by keeping the act up until after their vacation, they both got to enjoy one final week of normalcy with their friends, and it gave them time to cool down enough that when they did break the news, they could at least present a united front.
And, though he wouldn’t admit it, the selfish part of him wanted to avoid the crushing finality of telling everyone for as long as possible.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but then again, his brain had always seemed to turn to mush when it came to Patton.
The bastard was impossible not to adore.
And so, here he was, sitting on the edge of the bed that he would be sharing with his ex-boyfriend for the next week, in a lovely little house that he could so clearly picture the two of them sharing a life in, surrounded by all of their closest friends.
One week. That was all he had to get through.
One week, and then everything would change.
~
Dinner was, of course, delicious.
Janus twirled his spaghetti around his fork and tried to look as nonchalant as possible, situated directly next to Patton. He cut a sidelong glance at him—at the very least, he seemed a fraction less tense than a few hours ago, which he supposed was an improvement. He had been white-knuckling the steering wheel on the ride over.
His face was also prettily flushed, the way it always was after a few glasses of wine, which Janus was valiantly trying to ignore.
“This is wonderful, dear,” Janus said as naturally as he could. Patton started a little.
“Thank you!” He responded, the flush creeping down to his neck and beneath the collar of his shirt. A small, traitorous part of Janus’s brain wondered how far down it went. “…honey.”
“I was thinking we could all head down to the beach at around ten tomorrow?” Roman cut in brightly. “Make some sandwiches, bring a cooler?”
“Sounds good to me,” said Virgil, picking at his salad. In spite of himself, Janus had to fight back a smile. Roman could have suggested they all walk over hot coals at six AM sharp, and Virgil would have readily agreed.
“Everyone good for margaritas after dinner?” Roman asked. He had worked as a bartender in college, and as such, always took it upon himself to make drinks for the group at large. Not that Janus complained. Roman knew exactly how Janus liked his drinks–syrupy sweet, the alcohol nearly undetectable–and scarcely teased him for it.
Patton nodded so emphatically that a bit of white wine from the glass that he was holding nearly sloshed over the side, and understanding hit Janus like a stone sinking in water. He’s planning on getting drunk.
Janus could hardly blame him–the thought had crossed his mind too, as a way to cope with the comically uncomfortable situation the two of them had found themselves in–but Patton was a notoriously chatty drunk.
The first time they had all drank together as a group was in freshman year, sitting in a cramped circle around Roman and Patton’s shared dorm room, playing some drinking game that Roman had found online and nursing some truly disgusting vodka mixers with whatever beverages they could scavenge from the vending machines. It had been two years before he and Patton had started dating, and at the time, Janus had been determinedly ignoring the way his stomach swooped at the sound of his laugh like a bird dipping and gliding in the air. He knew fully well from his older sister what happened to friend groups when two of the members started dating. Despite having only met in August, these were some of the closest friends that Janus had ever had, and he wasn’t willing to give it up on the off chance that Patton liked him back.
On his left, Logan took a shot of New Amsterdam, his face scrunching up in disgust as the others cheered. On his right, Patton, leaning against his dresser and eyes slightly unfocused, shushed them halfheartedly, mumbling something about keeping quiet for the RA. Remus reached to the deck of cards in the center of their lopsided circle, and drew the top one, crowing, “Queen!”
“Whaddoes that one do again?” Virgil asked, readjusting the weighted dinosaur from Patton’s bed he was holding in his lap. He hadn’t relinquished it all night.
“I gotta ask someone a question, then that person asks someone else a question, and so on. First person who doesn’t want to answer drinks. Logan–what’s the worst grade you’ve ever gotten in a class?”
Logan blushed beet red and glared down into his red solo cup, as if trying to divine the answer from his rancid blue Gatorade mixer. At last, he mumbled, “A B. Plus. In junior year English.”
They all roundly booed him.
Logan straightened up and cast his gaze around the circle. “Um…Patton. What is the worst thing you’ve done in the past week?”
Patton’s eyes immediately widened, and he looked guiltily down at the floor. “Yes’trday, I…killed a spider.”
“The horror,” said Remus.
“I didn’ mean to, it jus’ startled me!” Patton said, the alcohol slurring his words together. They had never gotten drunk together as a group before, and Janus suspected that this may be Patton’s first time getting drunk at all.
“‘S alright, Pat,” Virgil snorted, not much more sober than Patton was. “‘S your turn.”
Patton immediately perked up. “So I ask a question?”
“Yep!” Roman said from Patton’s other side.
“Can be anything,” Remus added.
Patton thought for a moment, then turned to Janus so suddenly he startled. Patton’s face was inches away from his, eyes glittering, a pretty flush on his cheeks. ”Janus!” he chirped, and nearly tipped forward into Janus’ lap. “Do you like me?”
The reaction was immediate. Remus choked on his drink, and Roman made a noise that was somewhere between a hysterical laugh and a delighted gasp. Logan’s mouth fell open as he gaped at Patton, and Virgil, despite his inebriation, tugged at Patton’s hand firmly and gave him a pointed glare, hissing, “Pat.”
Janus sat rooted to the spot, the world seeming to tip beneath him. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from Patton, looking at him so earnestly with those melted chocolate eyes, his lips slightly parted. He was so close that Janus could count the freckles on his face.
He could feel the response on his tongue; could feel the shape of the words, the weight of them. He opened his mouth, and managed a humiliating sound that was something like a frog croaking, which made the twins laugh even harder.
Yes, his brain screamed at him. Yes, I do, and if you keep looking at me like that, I might fall in love with you, too.
Instead, he took a sip of his drink.
~
Now he sat on the couch, margarita in hand and trying his best to ignore the way his nerve endings lit up at every square inch of Patton’s body pressed against his side.
They were all a few drinks deep by now; the twins had insisted on playing drinking games, despite the fact that they were certainly getting too old for such things. Still, it was a welcome distraction: facing off against Roman and Virgil with Remus in a game of pong as Logan and Patton watched bemusedly from the couch was a welcome distraction. At some point, though, he had tapped out, swapping places with Logan, and now he found himself on the couch with Patton.
The room had gone pleasantly fuzzy around the edges; Janus closed his eyes, allowing himself to savor the feeling. His friends were together, the house was quaint and cozy, and Patton was leaning against him, his warmth as comforting as Janus remembered. He could almost pretend that everything was as it should be; that he and Patton were still together, and that they could sit like this again, curled up on each other, not having to worry about jumping back as if the other had burned them.
Janus shoved the thought away; it wasn’t fair to Patton to let himself pretend. They had broken up, and Patton had probably moved on by now. Regardless of whatever lingering feelings Janus still had for him, he needed to respect that.
Patton shifted, and his head lolled gently against Janus’ shoulder. He had been strangely quiet all night—at least he was keeping his lips sealed about the agreement—but Janus was being very much reminded what a cuddly drunk Patton was.
He supposed he should be grateful; if Patton hadn’t decided to sit next to him, it might have seemed suspicious. But him sitting here brought on a new host of problems, chief of which is that Janus would have given anything for the two of them to stay there forever.
He blinked rapidly, trying to clear his mind. The breakup was his own fault, after all; if he had wanted this forever, then he should have stepped up when he had the chance. But still, that wouldn’t have been fair to Patton.
Things are better this way, he told himself firmly. He had been repeating the words over and over again for the past few months, hoping that one day, he’d believe them.
He shifted, and found himself nose-to-nose with Patton, who was blearily blinking up at him through long eyelashes. Janus didn’t know how long he had been staring at him like that.
“Hello,” Janus said, hoping that the flush in his cheeks could be chalked up to the alcohol. “Enjoying the party?”
“Mmmhm,” Patton mumbled sleepily. “Dr’nk too much.”
“I can see that.”
Patton’s brow furrowed, face scrunched up in a pout. “Mean.”
“Honest.” He could feel Patton’s soft curls tickling his chin. “Perhaps we should get you to bed.”
“No,” he whined. “‘M comfy.”
“You won’t be when you wake up on the couch tomorrow with a terrible hangover.”
He poked Janus in the arm. “You’re comfy.”
“Patton,” Janus said, sterner this time. This—whatever this was—couldn’t happen. “Come on, let’s get up.”
“You going to bed?” Roman asked from the pong table, wincing as Logan sank a shot into one of his cups.
“Mhm,” Janus said, looping an arm around a very reluctant Patton. “Someone had a bit too much to drink.”
“‘M fine,” Patton insisted, an argument that was made less convincing by the way he started hiccuping.
“Bed, Patton.”
Remus snorted. “Don’t let him trip up the stairs!” He called after them.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Janus said back easily, even as Patton stumbled over his own feet.
They were almost to the landing, Patton tucked against Janus’ side, when Janus heard him mumble, almost too quietly for him to hear it, “I wish you din’ break up with me.”
If Janus hadn’t been so focused on getting him safely to bed, he might have accidentally dropped him. A million emotions clawed their way through his body, filling up his heart: guilt, longing, anger towards himself.
He pushed them all down and readjusted Patton under his arm. “I promise, Patton. It’s better this way.”

Expected Rating: Mature
Warnings: Surrealism, Elements of horror, (There might be more to add in the future)
Characters: Thomas, Patton, Logan, Roman, Virgil, Janus, Remus, Remy (background), Picani (background), Aunt Patty (Mentioned), Thomas's friends (Mentioned/background)
Romantic Relationships: Logicality, Pre-relationship Prinxiety, Pre-relationship Dukeceit, Unrequited Moceit, (possibly mentioned Remile)
Summary: Ever since Thomas was a child, he'd felt a strange tugging in his chest. A tugging, telling him that there's somewhere he should be.
It doesn't help that he has reoccurring dreams about a house he doesn't live in, but that feels far too familiar. It feels like home.
When his aunt Patty decides to move out of her own house, she asks Thomas if he'd like it. Since Thomas doesn't feel at home in his place and since it's rather cramped, he says yes.
Unfortunately, the house is located far away, in a town he's never even visited. Yet, he feels that it's the right decision to move.
Upon arriving in the town, called Moonville, he discovers a few things. The house he's moving into is the same that appears in his dreams, the town itself is rather strange, and… he seems to have some form of connection to people he'd never met before.

So I'm actively watching Supernatural and I can't stop thinking about the boys as hunters.
Roman and Remus are like Sam and Dean, brothers and incredibly stupid for each other. Going to Hell, coming back, punching the Devil in the face because why not. They may not have the best lifestyle but they have each other and really, what else do you need? They handle.. everything. Someone give them a nice hunt. Please.
Virgil got into the life accidentally but fully protected himself as quick as possible. I'm talking tattoos of every protective symbol and phrase that you can think of and he knows plenty of them. He doesn't keep many people close and he has the most run-ins with demons.
Logan didn't believe in monsters at first but he had a Bobby incident happen and lost someone close to him. That's what made him get as practical as he could with his defense and his offense. He deals the most often with ghosts and spirits and he's perfectly comfortable with that.
Patton is the type of hunter where you look at him and think he's completely normal, but then you show up expecting him to be useless and he's the most badass person you've ever met. He's the vampire hunter because of course he ends up being one. He's the cheery "what a nice hunt! Who wants some dinner?" guy. I love him.
Janus tracks down more unusual creatures, got into it because it was a family business. He speaks a whole cacophony of different languages and will not hesitate to start speaking German in the middle of nowhere if he doesn't like the person he's talking to. He
They all as a group culminate in a badass "oh my god stop almost dying" "STOP TRYING TO SUMMON THE DEVIL" "can we have one nice day" "thanks for the tip" group ever. And I don't even think they hunt together. I think they're all in different states, occasionally travelling, and then they call each other for tips. Every once in a while, they send out a "might need help with this one" text and everyone shows up because you can't let a hunter go alone like that.
Dukexiety, Logince, and Moceit are my thoughts here. Remus and Virgil have a weird amount of demon knowledge between the two of them and they use it, Logan and Roman are definitely in love but refuse to admit it and it's "just casual" (it's not), Janus and Patton are basically married.
— 👑
D E V O U R I N G this I fucking L O V E this S O fucking much oml P E A S E!!! I seriously adore all of their roles they D E S E R V E to be a badass team!!! Also I'm cackling at the thought of part of the group being surrounded by supernatural creatures and one of them sends a text to a groupchat and not even 3 seconds later a van pulls up with everyone else XD

okay okay! first i wanted to say i love your art! it's so unique and cool!! also super soft when you do moceit and analogical 🥺🩵💛 💜💙 i think those are the characters i find perfect in your style, logan is just 💙✨ (/gen)
so! on the topic of moceit and analogical, maybe some headcanons you have for both pairings? :3 🩵💛 💜💙
Thank you, that's so sweet of you to say! I love every tag you leave on my art, and the whole system is glad you enjoy our work!
Moceit:
Patton has trouble with seeing the other sides as equals, tending to view himself as an authority figure. Not only was Janus the first to challenge this, he was the first to become an equal. Janus challenges a lot of Patton's preconceived ideals and it's good for him - Patton has been living by the morals of a child while also putting himself in a role of power over the others. Janus is needed in order to break apart that dynamic.
Janus and Patton really both love hanging out in the outdoors, and just being around each other and chatting quietly is their favourite way to spend time. Very old married men behaviour.
Janus isn't much of a cuddly person, but Patton very much is. Janus is willing to concede to bedtime cuddles and maybe 5 hugs a day, but no more, no less.
Janus rarely talks about himself and his emotions, he's not fond of the vulnerability that comes with sharing facts about yourself. However, Patton tells Janus everything about himself. To the point that Janus knows about his cold shoulders, even though Patton didn't even know why Janus likes Halloween best.
Patton crochets so many warm clothes for Janus to use during winter to keep him from getting all slow and foggy brained. Janus can become nearly catatonic if he gets extremely cold, and Patton tries to help him stay warm as possible to prevent it.
Analogical:
I LOVE queer romantic analogical!! They care for each other so greatly, even if it couldn't necessarily be defined as a 'relationship', and neither of them want a relationship anyways. (aroace kings)
Logan writes fanfic and Virgil lays against his back on the bed and just hangs out with him. He calls it "nerd stories" but he loves editing for him and proofreading his work (and he loves the opportunity to spend time with Logan and engage his interests and passions in general).
Logan really enjoys letting Virgil show him his music! He enjoys breaking down the beats and melodies logically and the excitement of discovering new things. Logan is an emo and goth music fan by proxy.
Both of them are a bit touch averse and not incredibly physically affectionate, so cuddling or even hugging is rare between them. They much prefer to parallel play beside each other, doing their own thing yet enjoying each other's company.
Virgil truly understands Logan's current struggle, being disregarded and pushed aside, having your opinions discredited and ignored. That's why he never gets mad at Logan for snapping or jumping to conclusions that people hate him. After all, Logan was the one that taught him about cognitive distortions. Virgil is pretty much the only person Logan will accept comfort from at this point.
That's all that is on my mind for now, I love both of these ships so deeply <3

Your Average Petty Sinner
AO3 link (pending)
Summary- Patton goes through an Emo phase and decides to hang out with the most notorious kids at school, going so far as to try to date their leader.
Relationships- Janus&Patton (Moceit), Remus/Virgil (Dukexiety)
Word Count- 5.4k
Content Warnings- swearing, mild description of injury, mild sexual innuendos
This is my @sanderssidesgiftxchange gift for @lily-janus 💛💙 I really hope you like it! Also a shout out to @infinitesimal-dna for beta reading and putting up with my shenanigans.
“I just don't get it!” Patton frantically paced the small patch of faded pale blue carpet that was visible in his cluttered room, “I literally caught them with cigarettes and lighters in the bathroom- how did they weasel out of detention this time?”
Roman barely looked up from the script in his hand as he lounged on Patton’s bed, “I don't know. Remus didn't say when Mom picked us up. They weren't going to hurt anyone but themselves.”
“Lighters start fires- they could have caused a fire alarm and some freshman could have been trampled in the ensuing panic while the science wing burned down-” Patton whipped back to face Roman who remained unperturbed.
“And none of that happened. You saved the day, Padre. Why can't you just be happy about that?”
“Because they didn't get in trouble!” Patton crossed his arms tight over his chest and resumed his pacing, “why turn in the bad kids if they're just going to be let go?”
“Sounds like you want to put my brother in jail,” Roman snickered and briefly looked up, “I don't know why. Why do you snitch on them?” Roman countered
Patton bit down hard on his lip before taking a measured breath, “I am not snitching. They just keep breaking the rules in front of me.”
“I think you just want Janus to notice you. Trust me, he does, sweetie. Remus won't stop complaining about how much the goodie two shoes need to fu- leave them alone,” Roman replies, remembering too late the household ban on swears.
“SHH! Don’t let Mom hear you.” Patton whispered tersely, “you’re wrong. I don’t care what any of them think about me– especially not Janus.”
Roman snorted, “Yeah, right. That’s why you’re constantly tattling on him. Didn’t anyone ever tell you that when a boy’s mean to you that means he likes you?”
Patton stopped in his tracks and turned back to face Roman, “That’s… completely untrue.”
Roman rolled his eyes, flipping a page lazily, “Just keep telling yourself that, Padre. I bet if you just asked he’d go out with you.”
“I’m not gay and I don’t want to go out with him,” Patton countered, “will you please just be quiet? My mom would kick you out in two seconds for being a quote ‘bad influence’ if she heard you right now.”
“Mmm fine. Alright. I won’t talk about your obvious crush on Mr. Tall, Dark and Mysterious.”
“I am not- Why don’t you understand that not everyone has to like guys?”
Roman sat up, “I’m not saying everyone. I just know you, Patt. You don’t like girls. You’ve turned down like twenty of them since homecoming last year. So if you don’t like girls, that just leaves guys. I know you don’t feel comfortable bringing a bf home because of the witch, but you’ve at least got to let yourself consider the possibility.”
“Maybe I just haven’t met the right girl,” Patton replied, not sounding as convincing as he should have to shut down the conversation.
Roman chuckled, “sure. Because she’s actually a boy named Janus and you’re looking in the wrong places.”
“Roman!”
“Just ask him!”
“He hates me. And I don’t like him.”
“You absolutely fucking do!”
“Roman!” Patton hissed, flinching as he could hear his mother’s footsteps coming down the hallway. “Now you’ve done it-” he muttered as the bedroom door clicked and swung open.
“Patton, sweetie. What’s our rule for having friends over?” his mother asked from the door, a falsely sweet and disarming voice cutting through the tension of the argument.
Patton turned, “they need to follow house rules and not distract from school work…”
“That’s right. If I’m not mistaken, I believe I heard Mr. Prince here swearing. That is no way to speak to others, is it?”
“No, ma’am,” Patton replied, head hung in defeat.
She turned towards Roman, “Exactly. I’m sorry dear, but you need to leave and reevaluate your vocabulary and manners if you want to spend time with my son.”
“Sorry, Patt,” Roman murmured as he grabbed his backpack and walked past to leave, “tomorrow. Just do it.”
Patton sighed with exasperation, “Please, Mom, let him stay? He didn’t mean to-”
“You know the rules, Patton. I think it’s about time you got started on your homework,” she brushed him off, escorting Roman out to the front door.
Patton waited until he heard the front door shutting before closing his bedroom door to get started on his work, trying to tune out his racing thoughts about school.

Janus slumped against the lockers, ignoring the dirty look from Susan next to him when he accidentally shut hers for her. It wasn’t his fault her locker was so close to Virgil’s. He gripped the head of his cane to keep it from sliding into the throng of students that would trample and crack it without a second thought. The polished wooden cane had cost a fortune, stained black with a yellow snake carved around the shaft up to the handle. He'd refused to adopt a medical-looking metal bully magnet and protected his aide fiercely. Janus silently watched Virgil picking out text books for the next class.
“What a bitch, right?” he asked once Virgil had noticed him.
Virgil nodded sagely, “Yeah. Who’re we talking about this time?”
Janus smirked, “Mrs. Hansen, of course. It’s like she doesn’t even care that I don’t give a fuck about Physics.”
“She held you after class again? That bitch!” Virgil gaped, closing his locker, “that is so messed up. You should tell the VP that she’s not respecting your accommodations, right?”
“Like he ever cared the twenty thousand other times someone tried to make life harder,” Janus scoffed, glancing at the disturbance coming down the hallway and opting not to warn Virgil.
With all the subtlety of a tornado, Janus watched as Remus pinned Virgil to the lockers, dropping his backpack at Janus’ feet in his hurry to get hands on the boy. Virgil grunted in surprise, pushing back against the attack until he recognized the lips pressed harshly into his neck.
“Rem-! Oh my god!” Virgil laughed breathlessly, “I told you not at school, motherfucker!”
Remus looked up with a devious grin, “and? Your mother said she loved it.”
“Gross,” Virgil chuckled and pulled his boyfriend into a tight hug, “I missed you.”
Janus rolled his eyes, pushing the discarded backpack away with the tip of his cane, “It’s been all of an hour since you two last molested each other in front of the entire school.”
“Jealous, Jannie?”
“Utterly green with envy,” Janus sighed, noticing the crowd in the hall thinning rapidly, “are you done playing tongue hockey yet?”
“Never,” Remus laughed and turned back to Virgil, cutting off his protests with a filthy kiss.
“I’m honestly surprised you haven’t figured out how to make gay love babies yet,” Janus replied, carefully readjusting his treasured suede gloves. The crowds of students dissipated and doors shut as the bell for the next period rang through the now empty halls.
Janus nudged the pair, “Biology will have to wait. Let's get going.”
“Oh come on!” Remus whined, “just tell Mr. Sawan you got held back and we're helping you-”
“It's not a lie for once,” Virgil added, leaning down to grab Remus' bag.
“And they say I'm the bad influence,” Janus scoffed, grabbing his cane to start towards class. Virgil and Remus reluctantly followed, careful to give him space to walk.
Janus wasn't actually eager to get to class. Everyone always stared when he walked in late, despite arriving late by necessity every day. The scrutiny felt absolutely miserable.
As they neared the stairs down to the mathematics wing, Janus paused to let the couple go first. The last thing he wanted was to slip all the way down into a concussion.
“Hey!” A voice called loudly from down the hall, “aren't you supposed to be in class?”
Janus glanced over and swore quietly at the sight of the world's most annoying goody two shoes coming towards them.
“Patton. Where do you think we're going?” He asked in a lazy drawl.
“Yeah, calm your tits,” Remus added less than helpfully.
Patton frowned, glancing down at his chest for a brief moment, “I don't have- the bell rang five minutes ago. You're supposed to be in class. I bet you're out here trying to smoke and ditch class.”
“How? You stole my lighter yesterday,” Virgil snarked back, arms crossed tightly over his chest.
“It’s against school policy-” Patton started.
“What's against policy is a student trying to police other students. I literally cannot walk the halls when everyone else is running around,” Janus spoke up, standing up straighter. “We'd have made it by now if you hadn't interrupted us.”
“You liar. You're just messing around to get out of class,” Patton accused, stepping closer as if to intimidate Janus.
He laughed, “we have this discussion once a week! If I didn't know better, I would think you're going out of your way to flirt with me.”
An inscrutable look passed over Patton’s face, freckles melting into a soft flustered blush. “I am not!” Patton whispered hoarsely.
“Then we'll just be on our way,” Janus sneered, starting down the first step, cane first.
“Hey!” Patton gasped, reaching for Janus’s shoulder. Janus flinched at the unexpected touch, shifting to toss Patton as far from him as possible.
Unfortunately, this sent the boy careening down the flight of stairs.
“Shit!” Janus exclaimed,  watching in horror and slight mesmerism as Patton came to a halt on the first landing.
“You killed him!” Remus cackled with glee at the possibility.
“Jan- what the fuck?” Virgil asked, not sure if he should move to help Patton or not.
Janus glanced down the hall, and seeing no one, made his decision.
“Virgil, help me get him to the nurse.” he instructed. “Remus, get to class and tell them Virgil and I cannot make it. Give as little context as possible, got it?”
Remus nodded and hurried to the class.
Janus hurried down the steps as fast as he could manage to the place Patton lay on the stairs.
“Wh- why?” Patton murmured, cradling his shoulder, “I- I wasn't-”
“Next time don't touch people without permission,” Janus snapped, reaching to pick  Patton up, “can you walk?”
“I- I think so?” Patton winced, trying to sit up with both of the others pulling him up, “d-don't pull my arm, please.”
Janus nodded, “right, let's go, before you die or something.”
“Good going, Jan,” Virgil groaned as Patton leaned more heavily against him.
“Shut it, Vi. I didn't do anything.”
The walk down the rest of the stairs and to the nurse's office felt impossibly long and arduous, as Patton moved slower than even Janus. And he moaned in pain at each jostle to his arm.
“You're going to be okay,” Virgil chewed at his cheek, “it wasn't that bad of a fall.”
“I- I hope so,” Patton murmured, “why are the bad kids helping me?”
Janus rolled his eyes, “who said we're bad?”
“I- you always get in trouble,” Patton tried to explain.
“Yeah. Because you're always trying to get us in trouble,” Virgil scoffed.
“I don't expect you to understand, Patton,” Janus stopped as they reached the nurse’s office, “ but sometimes people just don't think like you.”
Patton nodded then tried to walk into the office, “thanks, I guess.”
Janus rolled his eyes, turning to head back to class, only to be confronted with the imposing figure of the school vice principal.
“What's this, then?”
“Oh- sir, I can explain,” Janus offered hastily.
“You will,” the man nodded, pointing towards his office, “If you please, Mr. Shephard.”
Virgil fiddled with his sleeves, “It was completely an accident. We were just helping Patton.”
“He fell down the stairs after slipping on a spilled water bottle,” Janus protested, already tired of walking, “I think he hit his head so we didn't want to leave him alone before he could get over here.”
“I see,” the man eyed the two, “is that so?”
“Yes. That's what happened.” Janus nodded emphatically. He watched the disciplinarian's face to see if he bought the story.
“Get to your class,” the vice principal barked, and the two wasted no time disappearing down the hallway.
___ ___ ___
Patton stirred and sat gingerly up in bed. A needle of pain shot through his shoulder at the weight pressed on it.
“Oh- f-”
“Patton!” His mother stood at the door to his room with a sour look on her face.
“I was going to say ‘fudge’,” Patton gritted his teeth.
“Honestly, when did I raise such a delinquent?” She shook her head and barged her way in, “bullying other students and now swearing? Certainly nothing I taught you.”
“Mom!”
“I won't hear it. Luckily, some of your classmates collected your homework assignments for you. Behave yourself with them,” she scolded.
“I'm not a bully,” Patton muttered, gazing up at the ceiling as though the stucco could offer him the strength to endure her accusations.
“For the record, no one said you were but her. I don’t know why she thinks that,” Patton looked back to the door sharply, finding his mother replaced with Virgil standing slouched against the frame, a book bag slung over one shoulder. “Hey- I hope it's okay I- let's not worry about how I knew your address. How… are.. you?”
“I've been better. The doctor poked and prodded me a lot yesterday.”
“Yikes…”
Patton nods, “I’ll be back in school by Monday. Unless I go completely loopy in the head. But I think the sprain in my shoulder is worse. Is Janus okay?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah. He was tired from all the running around but like.. I don’t think he’s mad at you, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Virgil glanced back to the door before leaning closer to ask, “is she always like that?”
Patton nodded, “yeah… that’s my mom for you.”
Virgil swung his bag onto the bed, “alright, well, I’ve got your homework for the classes you missed.. And I thought you might like some music to pass the time? It’s the kind I listen to when I get really upset,” Virgil explained with a pointed look as he pulled a disk in a clear cover out of the bag with the school books, “just.. Let me know what you think if you do. I’m really sorry about what happened.”
“It’s not your fault, Virge-” Patton shook his head and then winced, “thank you, though.”
“No worries. I- uh.. Look forward to seeing you..? Yeah. Get better soon.”
Patton watched as Virgil exited his bedroom, confused why he of any of the kids at school brought him make up work. He examined the CD, turning it to read the sharpie writing, a list of songs with artists listed in incomprehensible initials. He turned the case over, noticing a small piece of paper tucked under the CD inside the case. Intrigued, he pried the case open and popped the CD out, laying it on the blanket. He retrieved the small folded paper from his lap, carefully picking it apart.
I didn’t push you down the stairs. I also did not try to help you after you tripped. If you tell anyone I did, I won’t hesitate to make you regret it. -J
Patton frowned, confused by the note. He tossed it aside and pulled out his portable CD player to listen to the mixtape without his mom listening in. He laid back, letting the beats and melodies wash over him. As he listened, an idea started to form, one of which he was barely conscious.
___ ___ ___
“Are you insane?” Roman stared far more openly than other students in the hall. Patton shrugged and pushed past his friend to his locker.
“I’m just trying something new,” Patton replied, hanging his backpack up and picking out books for the first class. He tried very hard to not express frustration when the bookbag caught on the spikes sticking out of one of his many new bracelets.
“You look ridiculous. You hate black! What is going on?”
“I can wear whatever I want, Ro. You sound like my mother right now.”
That shut Roman’s protests up quickly. Patton hummed to himself, reaching into the bag to pull out a brand new makeup pallet made of browns and blacks, picking the darkest shade to dab onto his eyelids.
“How hard did you hit your head?” Roman asked, staring in even more shock and disbelief.
“My head is fine, Roman. I told you I’m trying something new,” Patton explained.
“Oh Hey! When did you get hot, Pat-Pat?” Remus yelled, dragging Virgil behind him from down the hall.
“Woah- Patton, are you okay?” Virgil asked as they reached him and Roman at the lockers.
“Looks like Jannie knocked some sense into him. Hot damn!” Remus leered, earning a smack on the shoulder from Virgil and Roman.
“Guys, I am fine. I promise. I wanted to see how my mom would take it,” Patton offers, not so subtly searching the halls.
“Right. Suuuuuuure,” Remus giggled, “just remember that Virgie is mine,” he snaps playfully, “I don’t share and I certainly don’t do threesomes.” Remus winked, sending a shiver of disgust running down Patton’s spine. “Congrats, baby emo.”
“If you need to talk or something,” Virgil managed to offer before getting swept away by Remus.
Roman sighed, “Seriously, do you want to talk?”
“I’ll be fine, Ro. I’m still me. I just... I don’t know. It felt right this morning,” Patton offers as explanation.
“Well, you know where to find me. And if this is some ploy to get Janus to like you- it won’t work-”
“I don’t care if he likes me,” Patton protests, “this isn’t about him.”
“It’s not?” Janus asked in a smooth voice, standing behind Patton as if he appeared there from thin air.
“Janus!” Patton whipped around, “how- when did you- um, hi.” he stammered.
Roman laughed and clapped Patton on the shoulder, “good luck, Romeo. See you at lunch.” He walked away still laughing as Patton blushed and tried to shake the teasing off.
Janus watched curiously. He certainly would never have predicted that Patton would show up in an all black pretend-emo costume. Amazing really how people could still surprise him.
“I promise that Roman doesn’t know what he’s talking about-” Patton tried to recover his composure.
“He never does. Poor Remus got all the interesting and useful brains,” Janus sighed, examining his gloved hand nonchalantly. “Even if this were some ploy for my attention, I wouldn’t be interested just because you changed clothes and painted your nails.”
“That implies you would be interested in different circumstances,” Patton pointed out.
“Would I? I never said that. You understood my message, right?” Janus asked, changing topics quickly.
Patton nodded, “I- yes, I understood. You didn’t have to threaten me. Everyone thinks I broke my head and wouldn’t believe me saying either thing.”
“Correct. No use spreading rumors,” Janus smirked.
“Janus?”
“What?”
“Do you think I’m a bad person?” Patton asked quietly.
Janus took a moment to think over the question, “Why are you asking me?”
“Because I think you’re probably the person I’ve hurt the most.”
Janus laughed, “Oh please. Like you could hurt me. Since when do you care about my opinions?”
“I don’t know- I’m really trying something new here, Janus.” Patton worried his lip between his teeth.
“I see. I notice,” Janus nodded and turned to head towards class.
“Janus? Do I… seem like I have a crush on you?”
Janus stopped in his tracks, turning back slowly, “Do you have one?”
Patton shrugged his one good shoulder, “Roman says I must have one. I’m not sure. How do I figure it out?”
Janus studied the black clad teen he would have sworn had it out for him just two days ago. Who was he to answer this kind of question? And why wouldn’t he just ask Roman, the prince of failed relationships?
“I don’t know. Go on a date with me?” Janus was just as surprised at the words leaving his lips as Patton looked hearing them.
“Wait- really?”
“Yes. We can go out tonight. No need to make it formal. Just black, not black tie.” Janus nodded. It surprised him just how calm and collected he felt, proposing a romantic time together.
Patton hummed, “um.. I assume Virgil… gave you my address,” he replied diplomatically, “would you be able to pick me up.”
“Yes. 9 o’clock?”
Patton nodded, “yeah, that works. I’ll see you then?”
Janus smiled just a bit mischievously, “yes, you will. Good luck in school today. Everyone is going to notice.”
“Notice what?” Patton asked.
“This.” Janus smirked and leaned forward, planting a lipstick stained kiss on Patton’s cheek, turning to leave just as the first bell rang out.
Patton stood frozen like a deer, slowing reaching up to touch his cheek, “oh, shit-”
___ ___ ___
“Uh, Jannie?”
“Yes, Remus?”
“Where the fuck are we going?” Remus asked, hanging on the back of Janus’ seat.
Janus inhaled slowly, “We’re picking up my date for tonight.”
“Since when do you date?” Virgil asked, lounging in the back seat and scrolling on his phone.
“Since this morning,” Janus answered, “You two just made it look so fun I had to give it a try.”
“Ooooooooh,” Remus absolutely beamed, “so who’s the lucky virgin?”
“Come on, Re. Don’t assume,” Virgil chided, trying to pull his boyfriend back to the back seat. “Wait- I recognize this street-”
“Just shut up,” Janus growled, “You’re the ones who wanted me to date. He’s harmless and might even like me.”
“So you’re trying to go out with the guy who made our lives hell for over a year?” Virgil asked.
“I’m not being some sort of saint, I’m just curious about what Patton’s going through.”
“I’ll cancel the wedding bells,” Remus cackled as they pulled up to the door. The headlights swept over the porch, revealing Patton sitting outside in the dark. He popped up, rushing over to the passenger side of the car.
“Hey Janus- and… Virgil and Remus? What?” Patton squinted at the couple in the back seat, “is this.. A double date?”
“Somewhat. Get in,” Janus commanded, ignoring the snickering from the back seat.
Patton climbed in and sat down, confused but not about to back out now. Not when Roman would roast him for failing to go on the first date he’s ever been asked out on. Janus pulled out of the driveway and continued on in relative quiet.
“So… where are we going?” Patton asked, a little too bright for his dark exterior.
“You’ll see,” Janus replied cryptically.
Patton nodded and fell silent, watching the road slip by as they drove along.
“Woof. The chemistry is just bubbling,” Remus snarked after a few minutes of quiet, sitting back to cuddle into Virgil.
Virgil laughed softly, “give them time. I’m sure it’s just first date awkwardness.” He wrapped his arms around Remus and held him close.
Janus turned down a residential street and flicked off the headlights, “Well, Patton, since you’re exploring new countercultures, I figured it would be a good idea to bring you along to a protest.”
“A protest? At night?” Patton asked, fear glinting in his eyes, “what kind of protest?”
“One against ableism in the education system,” Virgil grinned, grabbing cartons of eggs from the floor of the back seat.
“Yeah! We’re gonna show that bitch what it feels like!” Remus crowed, opening the door before Janus could put the car in park and banging impatiently on the trunk. Virgil piled out as well as Janus parked and grabbed the latch to open the trunk for them.
“This… is illegal, isn’t it?” Patton worried, glancing around the street to see if they had been spotted yet.
“Very.” Janus nodded, “but, lucky us that the Virus have the dirty work covered. We’re just lookouts tonight. Mrs. Hansen has been violating my disability accommodations. That makes my life harder when I end up missing the beginning of class because of the crowds in the hallway. So we’re making her morning a bit harder.”
“Oh.. that’s why you three were in the hallway during class time the other day?” Patton asked, voice softening at the realization.
“Yes. Sometimes we wait until after the bell anyway but she still shouldn’t be holding me back like that,” Janus explained.
“I’m sorry- I didn’t realize that,” Patton offered quietly, wincing as Remus started chucking raw eggs at the car in the driveway.
“Relax, Patton. They’re just letting off steam. I swear they would have burned the school down by now if I didn’t try to aim them at productive activities,” Janus chuckled, glancing down the road for any observers.
“Right. So… this is a date… why don’t you tell me about yourself?” Patton turned in his seat to face Janus.
Janus slowly turned his head, “what do you want to know?”
“Um, I’m not sure. I’ve never done this before,” Patton laughed nervously, “maybe… when did you know that you’re gay?”
Janus snorted at that, “I still don’t know. You’re the first boy I’ve tried to date. You’d think hanging out around the twins would make that sort of question easy, right?”
“Right! Like, I’ve known Roman really well for years and he sure seems to know… some of what he wants. But I just don’t know how he understands what a crush is versus wanting to be friends.”
“Those two make it seem like you meet someone and suddenly they’re the only thought in your head ever,” Janus nodded to the couple who were busy laying out toilet paper strips in the shape of a penis on the hood of the car, “I’ve never understood it.”
“Do you.. Feel that way about me?” Patton asks, “since you’re the one who asked me out.”
“Frankly, I find your change of aesthetic rather intriguing. And you seem willing to challenge some of your bullshit ideas right now, so why not?” Janus shrugs, “maybe I just want attention and don’t give a fuck about who you are. You can never know.”
Patton looked down towards his hands, folded neatly in his lap, “I think I’ve been jealous of you all.”
“How so? You seemed adamant about reporting us to the school like a narc for the past year,” Janus challenged.
“Because things like egging teacher’s houses and smoking in the hallways can cause problems for people! But, I do like how you all express yourselves.”
“Really?”
“Right. You just… get to be weird and stand out in classes. You get away with a disturbing amount of rule breaking. It seems really freeing,” Patton sighed softly, “Maybe I’m thinking about it wrong. I’ve just always felt terrified of disappointing people, and in just one day I’ve been able to disappoint almost everyone.”
“So, you’re just dressing emo to make people upset, not to express yourself?”
“I mean- maybe partially?” Patton shrugged, “I never knew you all were this criminal-”
“Patton-”
“And… I think it’s maybe hot that you all stand up for yourselves despite what people think of you?” Patton says shyly, more of a question than an opinion.
“I didn’t bring you along to impress you with like that-”
“No?”
“I thought giving Virgil and Remus a target would give us some time alone,” Janus explains.
“Time  alone to do what?” Panton leaned a bit closer.
“What we’re doing now, talking.”
“That’s all you wanted to do with me?” Patton asked, head tilted a bit.
“Did you want to kiss me?”
“Patton-”
Patton leaned in even closer until the backdoor slammed open, sending him scrambling back to his seat, blushing bright red.
“Drive- Neighbor might be calling the cops.” Remus replied, out of breath.
Virgil nodded and Janus jumped into action to get away from the crime scene.
“Looked like a productive date,” Remus teased as Janus slowed back down to avoid suspicion.
“Wow what a rush!” Patton exclaimed.
“Adrenaline wasn’t the point,” Janus reminded him, “Are you two ready to head home?”
“Yeah, Remus’ please,” Virgil nods.
Remus spent the car ride back to his place giving the lookouts a play by play of the night, with Virgil interjecting with certain facts and figures.. Janus soon dropped the pair off and the silence settled between him and Patton.
“I just… you guys get away with bad behavior all the time. I wish I could do that the same as you,” Patton spoke up eventually.
Janus sighed and pulled the car over again, this time near a park, “Do you even care about why we do that stupid shit?”
“Well, tonight was about getting back at Mrs. Hansen, right? For treating you badly,” Patton recalled.
“And skipping class is because it’s too overwhelming to sit still learning useless crap with a bunch of jerks who know nothing about what it’s like to try and navigate when your feet don’t just take you to where you need to go. They don’t care that it hurts to walk and it’s just safer to take my time with friends by my side to catch me.”
“I-”
“You just see me as some bad boy to upset people with. You don’t care how I feel about it, do you?” Janus challenged.
“That’s not true-” Patton tried to protest.
“I’m not some average petty sinner to disappoint your family with at the holidays. I actually have feeling and wants and needs and I just- I-”
Patton reached over to take one of Janus’ hands, “It’s okay. I-I didn’t want to use you, Janus. Not in the long run. Sure, I wanted to experiment and see if Roman’s right about crushes, but I don’t want to trap you in a relationship you won’t enjoy. I don’t want to hurt you.”
Janus looked away, trying to pull his hand free.
“Just remember that you asked me out tonight. So, I thought that kisses were something you’re supposed to do on dates. Can we try again without interruptions this time? See if… well, if we’ll like that sort of thing?”
“Are you even listening to me?”
“Yes, yes I am. You are not a manic pixie dream boy or the dangerous rebel to scare my mom with. You’re Janus. And I don’t know you very well because I’ve never tried to get to know you. But we’re on a date. It’s past curfew. I think you at least deserve a chance at something properly romantic, since defacing property was just the distraction to keep Remus and Virgil busy. It’s too late to get food anywhere. So maybe we can try a kiss and start over again in the morning?”
Janus blinked, trying to process all of that at once. “Um… no.”
“No?” Patton sat back immediately, “did I do something wrong?”
“Not necessarily, I just… you asking makes it very clear to me that I don’t want to kiss you, Patton.” Janus tried to explain.
Patton nodded, “okay. I- actually, thank you? I- I was so scared…”
Janus chuckled softly, “I don’t think we’re crushing on each other. I’m not sure why not. But I’m glad you agree.”
Patton nodded emphatically this time, “I very much don’t want to be the awkward one. I think… it would feel wrong or empty to try. And that’s not your fault-”
“I get it. I agree. We tried. Dating just… isn’t in our cards,” Janus laughed a bit more at that, “let me take you home?”
“Yes please. Maybe at school… we can just say hi?”
“That would be much more pleasant.”
Patton sighed softly and leaned back in the passenger seat, “I won’t tell about the eggs and toilet paper, by the way. Maybe I should ask Mrs. Hansen why she’s not letting you leave for class on time?”
Janus smiled, “That could be helpful. Maybe she just needs to see one of the responsible students concerned on our behalf.”
“Would have been a lot less illegal if you just asked me to do that in the first place,” Patton giggled, “It makes more sense than vandalism.”
“But throwing trash at her house is fun,” Janus grins, starting the car again.
“It may be fun. But there are much better outlets for the anger, I would think.” Patton grinned.
“Maybe you’ll be a good acquaintance after all,” Janus mused, pulling back out onto the road to take his definitely-not-a-date back home.

Blanket for the fluff snippet thing for moceit possibly?
Tumblr media
HeheheHEHEHE
We once again return to the "night meeting after PoF" scenario that Spicy believes in religiously
Bonus: worked an actual blanket into the fill
Patton's breath billowed out in great, rolling waves like smoke from a dragon's maw. He supposed it made sense, after all the destruction he'd wrought. Everything lay in shambles all around him and he had no one to blame but himself.
The effects of his room rendered his thoughts syrupy, saccharine, pointed firmly backwards. The memories of better days rang hollow in his heart and only deepened the ache. He would find no comfort in memories tonight.
Slipping on his cardigan, he ventured into the hall with his socks on. The cold was obviously Roman's doing, as was the sickly, desaturated tint of the subconscious' walls and carpet. Roman's door had turned full gray, covered in chains and padlocks with no keyhole.
Patton didn't even have time to tear up before movement from the other end of the hall caught his eye. He turned his head and found Janus shivering not six feet away from him, face as open and honest as a child's. It vanished in an instant, gates slamming down. He'd already had his arms pulled tight across his chest, body rigid, but he relaxed a little now and leaned against the wall. "Nice weather we're h-having," he said. "I-isn..." He shivered, words catching behind his teeth. "Nnh... Isn't it?"
"Oh, Janus." In the frigid air, Patton's heart still found a way to melt. "Are you cold?"
"Of course not; it's positively balmy in here." Janus glared at him. "What are you doing, sleepwalking?"
"No," Patton said,"just..."
Janus' expression softened just a little. "Trying not to lose your mind?"
"Yeah."
They fell silent for a moment until Janus shuddered, his eyes slipping shut for a moment. He tugged his capelet tighter over his shoulders, shrinking into himself.
"Come with me," Patton blurted, suprising himself.
"Trust you?" Janus said drily. Patton only looked at him, studying the sadness in his human eye, the red rim and glassy sheen. "Oh, very well. But if you try anything, Remus has more than just a morningstar."
"It's not a trick, Janus," Patton said, leading him down the hall. "I would never trick you."
Janus fell into step beside him. "You couldn't," he muttered, rubbing his arms.
"Because you're—"
"A mad genius, yes."
"Deceit."
Janus looked at him sideways from under the brim of his hat. "Whichever you like," he said, and sniffed.
"You're funny," Patton said contemplatively, nearly tripping over the coffee table when the living room loomed, abruptly ending the vast hallway they'd been traversing. "Whoops!"
Janus squinted at him, watching him regain his balance. "So are you."
"Touché, I guess," Patton said, motioning for Janus to sit down on the couch. "Let's see..." He got down on his knees in front of the coffee table, pawing through the wicker baskets resting beneath it. "We should have one for everybody... there!" He emerged holding two throw blankets: one yellow, one true blue. "Get cozy, okay?" He set them in Janus' lap.
Janus' brow furrow, irises darting as he searched the room. "What are you doing?"
"...Making sure you're warm?" Patton tilted his head like a confused dog. "I'm sorry, should I not have? You just looked so cold, and I thought..."
"No, it's—" Janus looked at the yellow blanket, turning it over in his gloved hands. On the far corner, Patton had imagined a snake, hand stitched, with two heads. Janus' logo rendered with all the love and care in Thomas' heart. He took a deep breath. "You are not what I thought you were, Patton."
"Is that good or bad?" Patton asked hesitantly. When Janus failed to answer, he bounced on his toes. "Anyway, I was gonna make some hot chocolate. How's that sound?"
Janus finally looked up at him again, finally relaxed and let himself smile. "Absolutely terrible."
And Patton, after a moment's hesitation, smiled back.

Fander Fic Rec Friday (#39)
(Another Canonverse Collection)
Growing Pains by NoblestRomanOfThemAll (AnxiouslyGoingIntoTheVoid) Canonverse (Gen) Rating: G A momentary lapse of attention leaves Remus injured, but the mishap provides Janus the opportunity to educate Thomas (and Logan) on the consequences Remus suffers from of embodying the more gruesome aspects of imagination. Notes: Some excellent hurt/comfort, flavored with an interesting exploration of the metaphysics of the mindscape.
I Taste Honey but I Haven't Seen the Hive by WaeRose Canonverse (Intruality) Rating: T In desperate need of comfort, Patton found it in the arms of the side he would have expected it from the least and it was exactly what he needed. Now if only everything going forward from that moment could be anything approaching that simple... Notes: A lovely queerplatonic slowburn as Patton and Remus change their dynamic from one in conflict to one of compliments.
end this ridiculous theater by lavender_star Canonverse (Gen) Rating: G After the events of PoF, Patton returns to his room a miserable, guilt-ridden mess. Fortunately a visitor stops by to offer him some comfort. Notes: Hurt/Comfort that is soft and sharp in all the right places.
Honesty is the Best Policy by SentientMango Canon AU (Gen) Rating: T Thomas practices meditation as part of an acting exercise, leading to his first direct contact with the sides. He makes contact with Janus first who, after rendering some much needed help, winds up getting a rather loaded thank you gift for his troubles... Notes: A remix built off of the single-chapter WIP Altered Perspective by alicat54c.
Dress-Up by LeviathanDemon Canonverse (Gen) Rating: G Recent progress having changed how Thomas views him, Deceit consults with him on a possible change in appearance. Notes: Short but sweet interaction between Thomas and his inner snake boy.
mourning tea by noxias Canonverse (Moceit) Rating: G Patton and Janus have plans to meet tea...but somehow it slipped Patton's mind until it was staring him right in the face that the date would fall on the anniversary of the Split. Notes: A bittersweet look at grief and moving forward to reconnect in spite of it. (And also, I suspect, an excuse to have Janus in a fancy dress, which...valid.)
Liminal Lies by Quarantinevibes Canonverse (Gen) Rating: G Virgil, Janus and Remus find themselves transported to an unusual part of the mindscape. Forced to combat a series of surreal challenges, they're going to need to work together (again) if there's any hope of making it home. Notes: A feelings-laden, riddle-fueled roadtrip featuring everyone's favorite edgy boys.

Necktie and eyeshadow for the sanders sides asks :]
Thanks for asking!!
Necktie: If any of my friends knew about sanders sides, they would definitely say that I'm Patton... and half a year ago I'd say the same, but now it's Janus- It's hard to explain in words. Probably because I have almost no trust in anyone and tend to play that one mysterious guy that no one can understand... well and deceit part too. Lately it's hard for me to understand my feelings and I end up lying about everything, so now even I don't know where the truth is :D
Eyeshadow: I really love every possible sides interactions, but Moceit... They're my parents. Nothing else to add.

Chapter 9: Loose Lips Sail Ships
Virgil's little slip-up at the end of chapter 37 has consequences.
Words: 1,005 Content Warnings: None Ships: Prinxiety/Moceit Rating: T+ (16+) Genre: Nonsense, Sass Additional Tags: Empathy is a bitch Between 37 and 38
“Virgil, that’s not you, is it?” Roman asks in a confused voice, holding his hand over his chest.
“No, when it comes to embarrassment, it’s usually Patton,” Virgil answered with a small sigh, feeling the bright, sharp shame pinching at her under her sternum another time this afternoon. “Should we ask why it keeps happening?”
“And possibly make it worse? No, thank you,” Roman scoffed, waving his hand. “I have homework, anyway,” he muttered miserably, kicking at his desk leg.
“No motivation to do it again?” Virgil asked.
“I am ready to burn all of it before my brain will even let me look at it. And I’m medicated, this is bullshit,” Roman mumbles, crossing his arms and pacing the room. “Speaking of… you mention it relatively often. Have you ever committed arson, Virgil?” Roman asked curiously.
“Be gay, do crimes,” Virgil responds with a salute and a smirk.
“Virgil, my vampiric darling, that doesn’t answer my question,” Roman insists, now standing over Virgil in her desk with his arms crossed.
“What are you, a narc? Don’t make me call my lawyer,” Virgil huffed, rolling her eyes at him.
“We are both dating your lawyer,” Roman pointed out.
“At least he’s not a narc,” Virgil stated flatly, drumming her fingers on the desk.
“When have I ever narced on you?” Roman asked, his arms slipping from their position.
“I plead the 13th,” Virgil states, turning away to look back at her laptop.
“Virgil, I’m not a history person, or whatever, but I’m pretty certain that abolishes slavery,” Roman said, sounding completely confused.
   “Damn right.” Virgil nodded vehemently.
“You could have just said you don’t want to answer,” Roman said flatly, putting his hand on her shoulder. Virgil paused, listening and hearing a familiar pair of feet coming down the hall. “What is it?” Roman asked.
“Patton?” Virgil responded distractedly, gently pushing Roman out of the way to get up and open the dorm door. Patton is just standing there when she gets there a moment later, bright red in the face. Virgil doesn’t know what’s happening, so she steps out of the way and Patton walks in, holding themselves tightly, and Virgil closes up behind them.
“What’s up, Pat?” Roman asks, putting his hand on Patton’s shoulder.
Patton moves to collapse in Virgil’s chair, still biting their lip and completely red in the face. “Oh. You know. Logan just asked me to explain what a vampire kink entails,” Patton whispered, Roman’s back shooting straight with his eyes going wide. “He wasn’t teasing or anything. He was just curious. The problem was I just stammered out ‘teeth’ after three minutes of standing there like a deer in headlights,” Patton whispers. Roman snorts, his hand shooting over his mouth as he holds back the urge to laugh.
“Is teeth the thing?” Virgil asks curiously, honestly having no idea what exactly it was about vampires that Patton was into.
“That’s the other problem. He looked up vampires online. Showed me some art. Asked me to pinpoint what was sexy about it. I’m very tired from that exchange, and I am here to demand unshielded cuddles from Ms. Accidentally-outs-her-friend-as-being-into-vampires. Not answer more questions that I don’t really want to field,” Patton muttered, looking up at Virgil from the chair. Roman’s still holding back laughter, now also red in the face from holding his breath.
“Whoops,” Virgil muttered, dropping her shield automatically. Patton let out a soft sigh, already reaching out for Virgil's bond.
“You didn't,” Roman gasped, putting his hand over his mouth.
“I just didn't understand why Logan would want to be bitten by me, okay?” Virgil hissed out. “It was an accident, and I offered to fix it, but Logan wouldn't let me wipe his memory,” she muttered. “So, setting up the air mattress, I'm guessing?” Virgil asked, trying to change the subject and take care of Patton.
“Virgil,” Roman groaned, rubbing his face with his hand.
“What?” Virgil demanded, feeling incredibly ashamed all over again. Probably from Patton.
“Did you forget you're hot again?” Roman asked indignantly.
“I run cold, remember?” Virgil joked, moving to go set up the air mattress anyway. Patton seemed too red to respond.
“Not only do you look like some kind of alt himbo, you're about as smart as one, too,” Roman sighed heavily, running his hand through his hair. “Virgil. Get it through your hard skull. Humans don't need a vampire kink. You don't even need your fancy brain-melting voice. You're built like a damned marble statue. People don't need more than that,” Roman insisted vehemently, and Virgil paused, blinking at Roman.
“Are you sure Logan wasn't just being nice?” Virgil asked, feeling a little lost. She naturally scares people off.
“Probably a better conclusion to jump to than vampire kink,” Patton whispered, gripping their skirt in their hands.
“… Double whoops. Sorry, Pat,” Virgil apologized, rubbing the back of her head. In retrospect, that wasn't her best moment.
“It'll be fine. Just cuddle me,” Patton murmured, clenching the skirt in their hands.
“On it. Sorry again.” Virgil felt the heat in her face from Patton's blush.
Virgil set up the bed quickly, and Patton got up to nervously stand next to the bed while Virgil finished. She wrapped them up in her arms as soon as possible, pulling them down onto the bed and under the blankets without hesitating. Patton let out another sigh, their arms hesitantly coming up to hug Virgil back under the sheets.
“I’ll join you too in a hot minute, just need to finish this damn homework,” Roman huffed, kicking at the floor and going to sit at his desk.
“Was this the right motivation?” Virgil joked quietly as Patton nestled closer, curling into her chest.
“With Patton’s emotions like this?” Roman whispered near-silently. “I don’t think there’s anything better,” he said, a certain resignation in his voice as he started his homework. Virgil suppressed a grimace, holding Patton close. Though as far as consequences went, this wasn’t the worst outcome she’d ever had to face.
