First off, I know you have 0 reading comprehension because nowhere did I say I was talking about the original series. I was just talking about how other shows start off with the characters married, and how instead of doing an origin story (boring) they should’ve actually done something interesting with the characters. And I don’t know shit about strange new worlds because it doesn’t interest me, partially because as a gay man, I like watching things with gay men in it, or barring that, at least a fucking hispanic character.

But let’s go back to The Original Series. TOS had the first black/white interracial kiss, and got massively in hot water for that. But the Hayes Code only affected film, and was also starting to weaken by the time the original series came out, to the point that some popular films weren’t approved.

But there’s something very important. Women were writing fanfic of Spirk in the 60’s. Women were drawing kirk/spock erotic artwork. They were risking their social status to write the premise. These women literally invented fandom, and made the show such a cultural touchstone. To say what they were doing was “illegal porn” is extremely reductive of the work they put into Star Trek, from fanfiction circles to the earliest conventions.

Actually you know what? The problem with modern Star Trek is that the people writing the show aren’t catering to TOS’s core audience: people who thought Kirk and Spock were in love.

Yeah "institutional structure can make normal people do terrible things" was very much not something everyone knew in 1971 and which a lot of people still don't believe today. You can also see this in frequent cases of abuses being revealed in some institution or other and authorities claim it's "just a few bad apples" (the example my psychology professor gave was the torture at Abu Ghraib under the US army). Of course the Stanford Prison Experiment doesn't disprove those ideas because it wasn't very good-quality science for several reasons. As postforposting said in another reblog, they're trying to create and act out parables.
