The island of Poveglia: Haunted or simply historic?
youtube
The urban legends of Poveglia's haunting is fun but it turns out the actual history of the island is even more intriguing.
Maybe.
Since this isn't really in my wheelhouse, I could only do the most superficial of information searches. My internet was taken up with pages and pages about the haunting of Poveglia. We've run into this problem before though with one site putting up something and every site after simply copying without checking for themselves so I can believe Poveglia has become a telephone game of urban myth. It was hard to find anything that said otherwise though.
I did find the book by David Basato and Paola Sfameni on Amazon. Unfortunately it was in Italian and out of print. I couldn't find any website run by David Basato in english about the island (unless it was on Facebook which I don't have). I had better luck when I searched for Poveglia per Tutti (Poveglia for Everyone). While the articles I found were about modern day problems and the attempt to buy the island for Venice instead of for cruise ships, one of the articles mentioned the 'haunting' and that it was a recent fabrication.
So - Poveglia, still mysterious and veiled even when simply trying to fact check it.

The Haunted Plague Island of Poveglia: A Dark and Twisted Past
Tumblr media
There are a lot of ghost stories from history, but have you heard of the haunted island of Poveglia? Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy, and is one of the country’s darkest secrets. The island has a dark and tragic history, having been used as a quarantine station for plague victims in the 18th and 19th centuries, and later as a cruel asylum for the mentally ill.
There have been numerous reports of ghostly sightings and eerie noises on the island, including the sound of screams, moans, and laughter coming from the abandoned buildings. Some visitors have reported feeling a sense of dread or unease when visiting the island, and some have even claimed to have been physically attacked or pushed by unseen forces.

Finished!
Start the fanfare! The next TWO novels in my Jaspa’s Journey series, both set in the beautifully unique Italian city of Venice, are finally finished! The Jaspa’s Journey series is about to grow by the addition of not just one, but two new adventures (photo: Rich Meyrick) Although, by ‘finished’, I mean the first drafts are complete. There’s still a lot of work to be done before publication.…

31 Days of Halloween: Day 22, The Phantasmal Phenomena of Poveglia Island, Venice, Italy
On the 22nd eerie evening of our haunting Halloween journey, we cast our gaze across the waters to the sinister shores of Poveglia Island in Venice, Italy. This forsaken island, entwined with tales of dread and desolation, beckons to us from amidst the serene Venetian Lagoon, offering a glimpse into a dark and turbulent past. As we set sail towards its forbidden terrain, the chilling whispers of bygone souls guide our path through the mists of time.
Historical Background
Poveglia Island, a seemingly serene speck amidst the Venetian Lagoon, holds within its bounds a history steeped in blood and despair. Its dark tale unfolds as early as 421 AD, with people fleeing barbarian invasions finding refuge on its shores. However, the island's malevolent legacy truly began to shape during the bubonic plague, serving as a quarantine station for the diseased and dying. The lagoon turned crimson with the blood of the infected, and the screams of the tormented souls echoed across the waters. Poveglia's sinister tale continued to evolve as it housed a mental asylum during the early 20th century, where the tormented cries of the mentally ill resonated amidst its forsaken halls.
Haunting Tales
The tormented echoes of Poveglia's dark past reverberate through the fabric of the island, giving birth to chilling tales of ghostly apparitions and eerie phenomena. Visitors have reported seeing shadows darting through the ruins and hearing the desperate cries of plague victims carried by the wind. The island is also said to harbor the spirit of a cruel doctor who tormented the patients of the asylum, his sinister presence felt within the decaying walls of the institution.
The ghostly tales extend to the waters surrounding the island, with local fishermen avoiding the area for fear of catching human remains in their nets. The sinister aura of Poveglia Island seems to challenge the brave and the foolhardy to unveil the dark secrets veiled within its haunted domain.
Exploring Poveglia Island
While the Italian government has sealed off Poveglia Island from the public, its haunting allure continues to draw the curious and the fearless. The tales of its ghostly inhabitants beckon to paranormal investigators and thrill-seekers, urging them to unveil the dark mysteries lurking amidst the ruins. Though the paths to the island are barred, the chilling narrative of Poveglia continues to enthrall and terrify, making it a sinister yet captivating destination in the realm of the paranormal.
Conclusion
As we disembark from the haunting haven of Poveglia Island, the ominous echoes of its dark past continue to resonate through Day 22 of our Halloween venture. The phantasmal phenomena of Poveglia Island remain an enduring enigma, offering a chilling narrative that intertwines the realms of history, horror, and the unknown. Amidst the serene beauty of Venice, the sinister lore of Poveglia Island lurks as a dark shadow, offering a hauntingly enthralling tale that stands as a testament to the eternal struggle between the living and the dead.

Episode 46: The Black Death and the Haunting of Poveglia Island Photodump
1.) Poveglia Island is a tiny island off the coast of Venice that has earned itself the nickname “ Island Of Ghosts.” It was a burning ground for plague victims AND a mental asylum. 2.) Poveglia served as a quarantine island for victims of the bubonic plague. Here we see a Plague mask and tools for disinfecting letters which were discovered on Poveglia island by Theodor Weyl in 1889. 3.)The surrounding lazarettos ( quarantine islands ) have been excavated to reveal over 160,000 skeletal remains in plague pits. 4.) During the Black Death Pandemic, plague doctors wearing beaked-masks roamed the island “treating” the sick with medieval remedies. 5.) The Black Plague was recently suffered by a member of the Gaylord family. 6.) Gaylord pulled a rat from a cat’s mouth and was infected with the Black Plague. He lost his fingers and toes, but survived. 7.) Plague doctors insisted that human waste be collected and smeared on infected buboes to “draw out” the illness. 8.) Bloodletting and leeching were also popular remedies for the plague. 9.) The abandoned mental asylum at Poveglia has a haunted past of abuse and experimental lobotomies. 10.) The bell tower on Poveglia is so haunted that anyone who enters it is said to get scratched and have harm befall them.

I remember reading that, at least supposedly, at some point they found what they thought was a vampire in Poveglia, but it was just a bloated corpse :0

Ciao Povelia fans.... it’s been a while! I’ve been staying busy, as always. You’ll likely start seeing some further updates from me regarding my other projects (I am writing and producing a narrative fiction podcast based around Dr. Deittman’s team, pre-Ciao Poveglia.)  It occurred to me that I never shared this!! A good friend of mine has taken up book binding, and she gifted me a copy of Ciao Poveglia to display next to Echoes and Ashes! (I freely admit and embrace the fact that a fanfic spun my book/TTRPG/podcast series.)  I woke up this morning to Kudos on Ciao Poveglia. It never ceases to amaze me how I still get readers, despite the fic being finished SIX YEARS AGO. And in such a niche genre.... If you’re someone who has recently found the story, or someone who has gone back and done a re-read... I see you, and I love you, and you keep me motivated in so many more ways than you can ever know! Anyhow, the Deittman Files Podcast is coming late summer 2022! We are on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter! Give us a quick search/follow if you’re interested! Oh! And a Discord community!!  If you’re interested in learning more about book binding, maybe check out my friend’s new facebook group-- Amateur Fanfic Binding! It’s some pretty cool stuff!! Ever Your Servant,
A.F
