Why does Vassago already have merch, we haven't even met him yet
#Celtrist#cel rambles#I don't particularly care how abundant the merch is on shark robot#It literally feels like they'll take a scrap of anything and make it a pin#Like the Moxie Antartica pin Really sir and a bunch others where they're just a random frame from the show#I mean they're FUN frames at least but I swear I've seen some real random ones that don't even make sense to be a pin#AND I'M SORRY WHY DO THEY HAVE SO MUCH MERCH OF CHARACTERS THAT I CAN'T IMAGINE BEING THOUGHT TWICE ABOUT#Sallie Mae fine I can see why people like her and want merch#Chaz is pushing it especially seeing as he's pretty dead but fine I suppose he has his fans#Glitz and Glam? Okay you already fucked up not going with their beta designs but who really was looking at them and thinking “I want merch”#But fine. I'm sure they have their fans#BUT FREAKING MUFFY?? THE VET RECEPTIONIST? WHO TF WAS ASKING FOR A PIN OF HER? DID YOU EVEN KNOW HER NAME?#They do that shit all the time and it aggravates me. They seem to go by a “quantity over quality” thing.#Which their quality is great btw but the quantity of things they have for characters that don't even matter and are seen once is rediculous#Also when I was gonna look up when we were gonna meet Vassago I saw he was an overlord in the pilot#Curious if that's gonna stay. What's to say overlords can't be hellborns or goetia#Is he a goetia? Not sure.#P-point is I like their merch and the new batch seems to mostly be uniquely made to be merch and I like that#But the amount of “garbage” (that's mean but best way I can put it) merch that has a character little to no one would care about#Or is essentially JUST a screen grab from the show is annoying and just pointlessly fills the shop pages#And while I see from a business perspective why they'd put Vassago out especially since some already like him#I also just think it's silly for him to already have merch when we haven't seen his character other than in the trailer#Surprised they don't have merch of satan out yet lol#Okay but I would've approved only so they could make a krampus joke with him#Granted I don't care about Helluva as much as Hazbin#But can't help to be more critical of it when it has a lot of problems Hazbin has aside from pacing#But absolutely NO excuse or leeway for the reason of the sloppy writing that's present#Lemme reiterate my good ol' phrase here:#You're not in the Sonic fandom for like 22 yrs and don't learn to be critical of the media you enjoy lol#rant

Happy Birthday Baby Plucky! Cel setup of Baby Plucky dealing with a plumbing emergency from “The Potty Years,” directed by Jon McClenahan. One of three shorts from the “Henny Youngman Day” episode of “Steven Spielberg Presents ‘Tiny Toon Adventures’” which first aired November 22nd, 1991. This was the first full episode that StarToons completed and I was fortunate enough to animate on this little gem of a short featuring Baby Plucky!

Hello cel starscelly I was at the preds game tonight and while there is much 2 not discuss there is also! Harley and Miro making eye contact across the circle on defensive zone faceoffs and making Significant Head Nods and Faces at each other. Like perhaps they were strategizing from across the circle. Which they can of course do bc I assume naturally all true d pairs can do this. Anyway I thought you might like to know this so you could picture it bc I doubt it made it into the broadcast

just learned about this (via Awayfarer), feel like it may be of interest re the 'ghibli and reluctance to address jp imperialism' question.
turns out, in the late 80s, Takahata planned a followup to Grave of the Fireflies that would very directly address Japanese imperialism in Korea and China, adapting a Japanese novel about a Japanese boy in occupied Korea who is tortured by the Japanese army for association with a Mongolian friend, and then defects to side with China. Much like Fireflies, a large part of the purpose of the work was didactic:
But the project was cancelled after Tiananmen Square:
Although Takahata finished a full outline by April 17, 1989, the film was cancelled before production could start following the crackdown on the Tiananmen Square Protests in the following June. Public sentiment in Japan had turned against China, and Ghibli's distributor felt a film partially set there was too risky. It is not known how much of the film had been worked on at this point, or if any concept art even exists. Takahata later published the full outline in his autobiography Thoughts While Making Movies. Ultimately, the cancellation of Border 1939 directly led to Takahata working on Only Yesterday, a project he had previously turned down.[4]
Only Yesterday, a small-scale character-focused story set in Japan, proved to be influential in establishing a space for drama stories targeting adults in anime, which became increasingly prevalent in the 90s. A current that could definitely be argued to play a large role in the international popularity of anime? I don't want to be like there's a direct chain of dominoes from the suppression of Tiananmen Square through popular exported dramatic anime films like Ghost in the Shell or the works of Satoshi Kon, up to the present universal influence of anime. Something similar would probably have happened anyway. Still, funny to consider the counterfactual timeline where Border 1939 actually got made.
Another interesting bit from Awayfarer relating more to the AI discourse that provoked all this is digging up a comment from Miyazaki on cel animation as a process of industrial standardisation, originally quoted in AniObsessive's article about the history of cel animation:

I am diagnosed, medicated and in a job that isn't literally killing me and aggravating mental illnesses it caused in the first place so i am slowly re emerging back to my art accounts. One of the challanges I am doing to keep myself busy focused and reconnected to my passions and hobbies is taking old sketches I leave literally everywhere and making them into full works. One of the co-challanges is to treat Happy Bitey as a playground for imitating canon styles with my own tiny twist. So here's my first adaption of some of my old scribbles!

One of my most why do I do this to myself headcanons is that Elrond talks to Celebrìan all the time, from the day she sails to the day he sails. That he tries to do it silently, but sometimes slips up.
Not in the way of sorrowful monologues, no, but in remarkably mundane ways. Sometimes he’s at dinner and the dessert is over-sweet and he’d mumble in disgust “god, you’d love this, wouldn’t you?” Sometimes he’d walk in the garden and see some awfully large bug and go “yes, yes, calm down, I’ll get Glorfindel to kill it”.
When he first set eyes on Bilbo Baggins he marvelled “oh, Cel, you’re right! they do have hairy feet, I owe you a gold piece!” and then immediately turned bright crimson upon remembering that in addition to hairy feet, Bilbo Baggins also had working ears.
He’d have five minutes in bed before getting up just complaining to her about all he had to do that day, and then later in the evening he’d stand at the sink with a mouthful of toothbrush, complaining about all he didn’t manage to get done. He’d chatter away about anything and everything, but always in the present tense.
It made Elladan and Elrohir very sad — after all, they knew what it was like to always have someone to turn to and discuss everything and anything, and the idea of losing that terrified them. Arwen and Galadriel would indulge him, in that they wouldn’t comment on it, and leave him to it when he slipped up.
Most surprising, however, is Celeborn’s reaction. They had had a mildly tense relationship the year after Cel was rescued, both blaming the other as cover for their own immense guilt. But any time Elrond accidentally addresses a comment to a phantasmal Celebrìan in front of him, Celeborn would do the same, to the same patch of thin air. Elrond loves him very, very much for that.
Aragorn, who had the luck misfortune of being raised by Elrond, understandably began copying his mannerisms as a toddler. This is what led to Gilraen coming across her five year old son having a full conversation with absolutely nobody whilst he played with his toy horses. Nervously, fearing for his sanity, she asks him who he was talking to, only for him to say “oh, it’s Cel, she’s a crazy lady and she’s me and Ada’s invisible friend. She hates bugs”.
Gilraen, not knowing Elrond used to call his wife Cel, spent a good two years absolutely certain that there was a poltergeist in Rivendell.
At Arwen’s wedding, as he leads her to Aragorn, he can’t help but whisper “look at our marvellous girl”. Arwen squeezes his hand, tight enough for two.
To his utter mortification, Elrond accidentally mutters “oh look at this wonderful tapestry, Cel, your favourite colour scheme!” whilst on a visit to Thranduil’s court. Thranduil politely pretends to not notice, feels a tinge of sorrow for his kind-of-friend, but also says a silent thanks to the Valar for “allowing me to avoid the Elrond approach to widowhood”.
Legolas convinces Gimli that Elrond is talking to a poltergeist, and offers him ten gold pieces to go and ask him if he’d like an exorcism.
In Valinor, two months after he arrives, Elrond is reading in his study when he’s struck soundly on the temple by a bedroom slipper. He looks up to see Cel, (his) dressing gown wrapped around her, her other slipper folded in her hand like a club: “who the hell are you calling darling at two in the morning?”
