CSD 2023 The annual CSD (Christopher Street Day) Pride Month in June is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and a significant milestone in the history of the LGBTQ+ movement. The origins of Pride Month can be traced back to the events of the Stonewall uprising, which took place in June 1969 on Christopher Street in New York City.
The Stonewall uprising began as a response to repeated police raids on the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay and transgender bar. On that fateful night, the bar's patrons fought back against police harassment and discrimination, marking a turning point in the LGBTQ+ movement and serving as a catalyst for the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
One year after the Stonewall uprising, the first Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade was held in New York City, which is considered a precursor to the CSD Pride Month. In the following years, similar parades and events were organized in various cities across the United States and around the world. These parades became a symbol of pride, visibility, and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community.
Over time, the CSD Pride Month has evolved into a comprehensive program featuring various events such as parades, demonstrations, concerts, film festivals, exhibitions, and lectures. Its aims are to promote LGBTQ+ rights, combat discrimination, and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity.
The month of June holds symbolic significance as it commemorates the Stonewall uprising and celebrates the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights since then. It serves as a time for reflection, remembrance, and commitment to building a more inclusive and just society for all gender identities and sexual orientations.
Today, the CSD Pride Month is celebrated in many countries worldwide and has garnered broad support from LGBTQ+ organizations, associations, businesses, and individuals. It provides an opportunity to stand up for equality and acceptance and to support the LGBTQ+ community.

These students in Alabama painted a Pride mural at their school!
Last year, we awarded $500,000 in grants to schools across the U.S. for student-led projects that support LGBTQ+ youth through our 50 States, 50 Grants, 5,000 Voices initiative. Just over a year later, it's time to see how their projects turned out:
Magic City Acceptance Academy in Homewood, Alabama used part of their grant funds to have an entire Pride-themed mural painted on their school's campus for everyone to see, as a daily reminder that they're supported.
Also fun fact: Magic City is an LGBTQ+ charter school made specifically for queer students!
We asked teacher Payne how it went and what advice they'd give to other LGBTQ+ students:
"It was exciting getting to work with the students to cultivate this project from the very beginning to completion. From brainstorming about what we wanted our mural to depict to painting with the kids to seeing the finalized mural, it was a thrilling process. You are seen and loved. Even if your immediate situation doesn't reflect that, there are people in this world who are so excited and happy for you to be exactly who you are and want to know and love you. Don't give up!" 💜

A Day at the @alohamauipride 2024 Pride Festival 🏳️‍🌈
//
It was an amazing time to celebrate Pride in my hometown of Wailuku here on Maui - as there are still daily attacks and hits on LGBTQ+ rights and peoples of all walks of life, it's a wonderful time for everyone to come together and celebrate strength in our solidarity and unity with each other 🫂 there were so many spectacular vendors and community support, everyone of all ages and backgrounds came out in full force to enjoy the festivities with their loved ones; thanks to everyone for making it an amazing event, and thanks as always to the Black/POC trans community who were the first ones to protest and fight (and still continue to do til this day) for the rights that I and many of my LGBTQ+ community have today 🌈✊🏽

These students in Indiana planned and hosted their city's own Pride festival!
Last year, we awarded $500,000 in grants to schools across the U.S. for student-led projects that support LGBTQ+ youth through our 50 States, 50 Grants, 5,000 Voices initiative. Just over a year later, we wanted to show off how their projects turned out to y'all:
This school in Carmel, Indiana used their grant funds to host the city's official Pride festival, Carmel Pride, with concerts, food trucks, vendors, and more to bring the local community together!
We asked student Marielle what was most surprising about creating the event:
"How many adults were willing to step up and help us. During the beginning of our planning, we asked if there were any adults able to assist us with finances and logistics. Over 20 adults showed up to support us and offer their help and advice. We didn’t expect much support from adults and it’s very heartwarming to know how many supportive adults are out there."
And whether or not it made students at the school feel more supported:
"Yes! While Carmel Pride is open for everyone to attend, there was a large amount of teenagers at the festival. Being surrounded by your community is an indescribable feeling. Outside of the festival, we see students wearing Carmel Pride pins on their backpacks and our shirts to school. It makes me really proud that students feel comfortable enough to openly express themselves like that at school."
And we asked teacher Caitlyn what the reaction was from the community:
"Largely positive. The people who attended our event had great things to say and were very happy with their experience. A lot of people have expressed how proud they are that people so young are doing something so big, and that's an amazing thing to hear after working so hard on this. However, our local Moms for Liberty group had issues with our drag performances which they posted about on their Facebook. They also had issues with the fact that a school club received a grant for this, questioning the legitimacy of the ways we were using the grant, for a community event and not a strictly school related thing. While there will always be some people who are upset by what we’re doing, its important to remember who we’re doing this for and why. The community we cater to is happy with what we’ve done and so are we, that's all that matters." 💜
