What would a child of autumn and winter look like? As much as I love cutsy little fawn/kitten sapling looking things the idea of them making an absolute abomination is very funny. A thing (calling it a creature would be generous) that never was supposed to happen that simply appeared due to how close the seasons have come to each other, that’s far more mindless monster then either parent
I've been meaning to put all my thoughts on something like this somewhere, so I'll make a list.
"Ours" By A Technicality: This is an honorable mentions category for children that aren't actually from a union of the Beast and Enoch, but are the progeny of one of the two, generally I'd say produced asexually. Lorna from The Sins of the Father and Fiona from @faerytri's The Story Teller's Tales are good examples. (And everyone should read A Horrid Birth because I have never ever read accidental baby acquisition done so right. It has horror it has humor! But most importantly, it has little Fiona!)
Audrey II Electric Boogalloo: AKA the Weird Terrible Plant that we have joint custody over. I'm not sure you would technically count this as offspring, but I do! I think the most likely outcome is a terrible pumpkin-edel fusion. Mira-eyeteeth's Plunge is my absolute favorite example (I just spent half an hour tracking it down because I would be remiss not to include it). The flowering edelwoods in my Lotus Gardener AU are another, and I'm working on an even better version of the concept right now.
V'GER Fusion: Again, we're really playing with the concept of "offspring", but a true merger of the Beast and Enoch, would be its own entity in and of itself. The Maypole in A Great and Terrible Union is a proto-v'ger style fusion, though there are definitely a lot of fics that flirt with this concept, I don't know if I've ever seen it fully played out. I think a Beast!Enoch (I swear I'm going to write it) or a Mayor!Beast (now there's an idea) would fall in this category.
Neither Sentient Nor Sapient Nor Alive in Any Conventional Sense: A lot of things fall in this category, but Miss Inky once mentioned miniature blackholes and tears in reality. Miniature Blackholes I think are my favorite, little hungry things that can't sustain themselves and evaporate, or maybe even more permanent tiny things that either don't emit, or consume their own hawking radiation and are perfectly stable... until they're fed. To beat a metaphor of a horse to death, I like the idea that instead of sparks flying when they kiss, it's a bunch of primordial blackholes that immediately vanish, maybe they emit flashes of radiation as the go.
Little Abomination: This is I think more in the spirit of what you were asking about, kittens with big ears and budding antlers, or horrible amalgams of fabric and wood and fur that look like strange little puppets of... something vaguely animal like, presumably these are born, but I rather like the idea that they grow on trees or perhaps hatch out of pumpkins like eggs. I think we're definitely in negative heterosis hybrid territory here. And I'm not sure they would be particularly long lived, as similar as the Beast and Enoch are in a lot of ways, they're also actively destructive to each other in others.

Sportz
Remnant loves sports, and when the season comes around to shoot hoops and throw an oval across a field, the rivalry goes OFF.
Ruby and Jaune root for the Redwolves, and Ruby wears a jersey at games.
Yang is a Grizzly. Blake is a Panther, and Weiss, alas, is dedicated to the Atlas Snowshoes, earning flack from her team. Rumors around games mumble that long-ago alliances gave the Snowshoes illegal Dust upgrades.
Qrow and Raven root for the Crows and Ravens and they are as combative, headbutting, and cantankerous about it as you would expect.
The Happy Huntresses are Timberwolves, although Fiona also likes the Rams and Joanna asserts the Wolverines can wipe the floor with either of them any day of the week.
Winter and Whitley like the Emperors, and ignore their parents' marriage in the background.
Mercury is a Hawk and Emerald is a Ferret.
Klein and Hazel are Badgers.
Watts doesn't root for any team since his science fair project for automated water boys didn't win, and he plots ways to sabotage Atlas games.
SSSN are the 'Mates (pirate monkeys).
The White Fang is divided between the 'Mates, the Jaguars, and the Elephants, and but a lot goes on when they storm the Jaguar v. Snowshoe game at championships. "Blake, root for me!" Adam calls from the chaos. Blake frowns in the bleachers. She kind of forgot about him.
Nora, for reasons known only to herself, is a Gopher.
Ren is an Akita.
Ilia roots for the Monitor Lizards, and doesn't realize what she's going to go through from how lame that is.
Ozpin roots for the Primordial Jellyfish. Somewhere deep in Evernight Castle Salem seethes in front of her flatscreen, as she has been on their side from day one.
Penny misunderstands a conversation about pigskin and returns to the stadium hauling a wild boar in her arms. "He's choosing a team!" she says when players scatter from its charge.
The bartender from that one gas station likes cleaning while watching the Rodeo Bulls.
Pyrrha roots for the Thoroughbreds, and somehow she always calls it when they're going to win.
The sports fandom goes crazy. So much intensity has tornadoed inside the championships that Grimm drawn in by the negativity back away from the stadium and look for someone else to attack. Remnant Sportz Lives On.

[ad_1] The asteroid 16 Psyche, which NASA intends to seek advice from with a spacecraft in 2026, could also be much less heavy steel and extra arduous rock than scientists have surmised, in step with a brand new find out about via researchers from Brown and Purdue universities. Psyche, which orbits the solar within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is the biggest of the M-type asteroids, which can be composed mainly of iron and nickel versus the silicate rocks that make up maximum different asteroids. But if considered from Earth, Psyche sends combined indicators about its composition. The sunshine it displays tells scientists that the skin is certainly most commonly steel. That has resulted in conjecture that Psyche could also be the uncovered iron core of a primordial planetary frame -- one whose rocky crust and mantle have been blasted away via an historic collision. On the other hand, measurements of Psyche's mass and density inform a distinct tale. The best way its gravity tugs on neighboring our bodies means that Psyche is a long way much less dense than an enormous hunk of iron will have to be. So if Psyche is certainly all steel, it will should be extremely porous -- a little like an enormous ball of metal wool with just about equivalent portions void house and forged steel. "What we would have liked to do with this find out about used to be see whether or not it used to be conceivable for an iron frame the dimensions of Psyche to take care of that near-50% porosity," stated Fiona Nichols-Fleming, a Ph.D. scholar at Brown and find out about's lead writer. "We discovered that it is impossible." For the find out about, revealed in Geophysical Analysis Letters, Nichols-Fleming labored with Alex Evans, an assistant professor at Brown, and Purdue professors Brandon Johnson and Michael Sori. The staff created a pc fashion, in response to identified thermal homes of steel iron, to estimate how the porosity of a big iron frame would evolve through the years. The fashion displays that to stay extremely porous, Psyche's inner temperature must cool under 800 Kelvin very in a while after its formation. At temperatures above that, iron would were so malleable that Psyche's personal gravity would have collapsed lots of the pore house inside its bulk. According to what is understood about stipulations within the early sun gadget, the researchers say, it is extraordinarily not likely that a frame of Psyche's measurement -- about 140 miles in diameter -- will have cooled so briefly. As well as, any match that can have added porosity to Psyche after its formation -- a large affect, as an example -- would most probably have additionally heated Psyche again up above 800 Okay. So any newly offered porosity would were not likely to final. Taken in combination, the consequences counsel that Psyche almost certainly is not a porous, all-iron frame, the researchers conclude. Much more likely, it is harboring a hidden rocky element that drives its density down. But when Psyche does have a rocky element, why does its floor glance so steel when considered from Earth? There are few conceivable explanations, the researchers say. A kind of probabilities is ferrovolcanism -- iron-spewing volcanoes. It is conceivable, the researchers say, that Psyche is in fact a differentiated frame with a rocky mantle and an iron core. However in style ferrovolcanic process will have introduced huge quantities of Psyche's core as much as the skin, placing an iron coating atop its rocky mantle. Prior analysis via Johnson and Evans has proven that ferrovolcanism is conceivable on a frame like Psyche. Regardless of the case, scientists will quickly get a far clearer image of this mysterious asteroid. Later this 12 months, NASA plans to release a spacecraft that may rendezvous with Psyche after a four-year adventure to the asteroid belt. "The undertaking is thrilling as a result of Psyche is this sort of ordinary and mysterious factor," Nichols-Fleming stated.
"So the rest the undertaking unearths will probably be truly vital new information issues for the sun gadget." Tale Supply: Materials supplied via Brown University. Observe: Content material could also be edited for taste and duration. [ad_2] #Psyche #iron #large #asteroids #iron #researchers #idea #ScienceDaily

Since I've been keeping up with the progress of the new Percy Jackson Disney+ series, I ended up wanting to add PJO into my TWST content.
How, you may ask? Well,
Fellow demigods, may I present to you...
Imítheos, an institution sponsored and supported by scepter hall
Aesthetic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Welcome to Imítheos! We are an institution who guide the descendants and vessels of primordial Greek and Roman beings! We hope you have a lovely time, just make sure not to trip during your time on any duties!
Sponsored by Eclair Hollow, imítheos was created in order to care for the descendants and vessels of primordial Greek/Roman beings without risking their health in the grounds of Scepter Hall Institute.
Imítheos is set in a forest similar to Scepter Hall, and is also relatively close to the location of the institution. But also not too close, considering that could put the health of the members at risk.
Imítheos is an institution run by Helena , an old friend of Eclair who is a centaur filled with everlasting wisdom. She also happens to be a distant descendant to Chiron, a centaur who is considered to be the wisest of his kind.
Helena: The head of the institution and caretaker to all of the residents within Imítheos.
Then we have Helena's three assistants. Diona, and the twins named Polina and Callisto.
Diona: A lazy but somewhat cunning assistant to Helena. They are a descendant to the god of wine, Dionysus. Despite the many complaints they make, Diona manages to memorize every resident's schedules and keep the institute from collapsing.
Polina & Callisto: Having grown up under the care of Helena during their youth in Imítheos, the two twins decided to self proclaim themselves as Helena's other assistants before it became official. Polina is slightly shorter given her current lack of a growth spurt in comparison to Callisto.
With the four of them keeping the institute from collapsing alongside Eclair's approval, they rule the institute with an iron fist and assist the residents in their designated sections.
There are two different sections of the institute. The Greek side, and the Roman side.
The color palettes for both side's uniforms goes as follows:
Greek: Dark brown(like- really dark brown, it almost looks black) with orange and bronze accents
Roman: Dark brown with purple and gold accents
_________________________________________
Upcoming main OC's:
Penelope: Twisted from Percy Jackson
Anthony: Twisted from Annabeth Chase
Gracie: Twisted from Jason Grace
Raphael: Twisted from Piper McLean
Fiona: Twisted from Frank Zhang
Lavender: Twisted from Hazel Levesque
Leonard: Twisted from Leo Valdez
_________________________________________
A bit of trivia:
Imítheos acts as less of an actual school and more of a summer camp where the residents can stay a for the rest of their lives
The Greek side have guilds based on specific people who helped influence the development of their guilds
Whereas the Roman side has a sort of praetor system

dino squad website (circa early 2008)
Hello, everyone! The Dino Squad website from early 2008 is accessible in the Wayback Machine, but as far as I’ve been looking, there isn’t a good post or guide to what’s actually in it.
Like everything in ‘08, this site uses Flash for pretty much everything it does (and PHP for everything else), which can make some things difficult, obviously. I can’t direct you in how to run Flash in 2021, but I wish you the best. The site I’m using is linked below, but there are several in the Wayback Machine that seem to work, although I haven’t noticed any differences yet. I have a few theories about this site, that I’ll get into when they’re relevant.
http://web.archive.org/web/20130210222200/http://www.dinosquad.com/
Feel free to explore! I’ll be leaving my notes down below.
Tumblr media
When you enter the site, you’re greeted by this screen, alongside a stock alarm sound, and the Dino Squad theme.
This next part is hard to show, but I’ll do my best. This is actually a cube that you’re just in, and there are interactive elements in the room that, when you hover over them, they have special prompts that go to other areas of this flash site. Also, it is noticeably slow to scroll.
Tumblr media
[the floor]
Tumblr media
[the wall directly facing the logo, presumably the entrance]
Tumblr media
[the wall on the right]
Tumblr media
[the wall behind]
Tumblr media
[the wall on the left]
Tumblr media
[the ceiling]
On the left hand side, there is a Music Player, that goes through memorable tracks from the Dino Squad soundtrack, like “Dino Squad” (the main theme), “Transformation” (the transformation sequence song), and “BaBaBa!”, a song that I don’t remember ever being in the show, and sounds similar to the transformation theme, but acapella. Also, Rump is there, for some reason?
Tumblr media
[the music player]
Now, this is where it gets really interesting. There was an ability to make accounts through the site, and gain “Ooze Power” through, presumably, doing well on the mini-games, some bones (?), and a badge system that, when clicked, doesn’t do anything.
Tumblr media
[the user profile]
From left to right, the dino silhouettes are: Buzz, Caruso, Fiona, Max, Roger, and...Moynihan? Veloci? It’s impossible to know, but it’s presumably Veloci, because Moynihan wasn’t revealed to be a raptor until the final episode (or second to final episode? I’m a fake fan).
On trying to click on any of the games, a log-in option comes up -- you need to log in to play the minigames, which means that I can’t play any of them, because it’s impossible to make an account now (I tried).
Tumblr media
[the log-in page]
When I try to register, there’s the outline of the Dino Squad logo, but no site content shows up besides that. This is a running theme, so I’ll only show the emptiness once. Also, it’s important to note that I think the tube at the top of the window is ooze, which is a delightful touch.
Tumblr media
[the empty screen]
The interactive elements of the room are either mini-games or character/story info sheets, so I’ll go through them one by one, starting with the character/story info.
Character/Story Information
Right by the door, there is a green monitor that offers you the ability to “Get the 411 on the DinoSquad, their vehicles and weapons.” Unfortunately, they won’t be quite able to deliver.
Tumblr media
[characters hover-over text]
Here is the character select screen. Did you know that it’s Rodger, not Roger? I didn’t. Unfortunately, of the characters listed here, only Caruso and Victor have their original info, which will be displayed first without comment below.
Tumblr media
[character select screen]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[caruso’s info sheet. if someone else wants to transcribe this, be my guest, but there’s just too much text for me to do time-wise.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[victor’s info sheet.]
On another green monitor, Dino Video would be available, where you could “Watch the latest DinoSquad shows and video clips online”. Unfortunately, it brings up a menu with two choices, and neither of them work.
Tumblr media
[dino video hover prompt]
Tumblr media
[menu options for dino video]
Next, we have the Dino Dictionary, with “Crazy facts about the Dinosaurs that roamed and ruled the earth for over 160 million years.” Unfortunately, these links are dead, too, but they’re shown as options in the archive file web, so they might be viewable.
Tumblr media
[dino dictionary hover text]
Tumblr media
[dino dictionary menu options]
Next are the character hovers. These would, on click, take you to their page. Only Victor’s and Caruso’s work.
Tumblr media
[veloci hover text]
Tumblr media
[max hover text]
Tumblr media
[caruso hover text]
Tumblr media
[fiona hover text]
Tumblr media
[rodger hover text]
Tumblr media
[buzz hover text]
Next, we have some tips for going green. This is the same reference center that the Dino Dictionary uses, so it likewise doesn’t work.
Tumblr media
[Go Green! hover text]
Moynihan and Rump’s text comes next. I can’t imagine what the log entry for Rump would have been.
Tumblr media
[moynihan hover text]
Tumblr media
[rump hover text]
That was all of the informational parts of this website. Now, it’s time for some fun.
Mini-Games
Or it would be, if they worked.
For all of the following, it just prompts the login page on-click, so I can’t really do anything or show what it might have looked like, unfortunately.
The first game is Dino Dodge, where you “Test your skills at this crazy game! Catch the bones, badges, and ooze, but dont [sic] get hit by the Dino-skulls!”
Tumblr media
[Dino Dodge hover text]
Next, My Squad. This is where you’d click to party up and stuff, I’m guessing, but it just brings me to the Login page, and I can’t do anything with it.
Tumblr media
[my squad hover text]
Tumblr media
[what the squad page could have looked like. under it, with the circles and icons, could have been a way to display your most awesome badges.]
Next, and possibly the saddest part of these, is RaptorQuest. “Your Squad will need all the ooze power possible to complete these 3D missions to save the world from evil primordial ooze.” I don’t know what this could have entailed, but it sounds like all of the ooze power from playing the games mattered here, and that there were 3D missions that could have had something of a storyline are gone? I’m in mourning.
Tumblr media
[RaptorQuest hover text]
After RaptorQuest is Oozefest, a game where you “Load up on ooze and fire away at Victor Veloci and his side-kick to send them back to their primordial state in these three Dino-levels!” Presumably, oozing them is a bad thing in this game, although how well that holds up to canon is debateable.
Tumblr media
[oozefest hover text]
My Badges is next.
Tumblr media
[my badges hover text]
The final game is Hyperdino. My immediate guess is that this would play like the Manhole Game-and-Watch game?
Tumblr media
[hyperdino hover-text]
Tumblr media
[manhole game]
Some Interjections
1. This website was made very early on, and was probably only using the pilot characterization.
Most importantly to this being that Fiona’s penchant for speed is what is most notable about her here, when that was really only in the pilot/dino-cycle part, near the very start of the show. The logo isn’t necessarily a giveaway, but the Max/T-Rex picture at the top is one that I don’t see much except on early promo art.
2. Did they make new art for this website, with this room, or was this an early base idea?
3. Why was there an option to advertise, and where would the ads be shown?
Tumblr media
4. Victor has many weapons and vehicles, but doesn’t have the wonderful Dino Dirigible yet?
5. This site (and its Flash) isn’t backed up besides the WayBack Machine.
It’s not in BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint, but I couldn’t extract the whole swf file from the html -- just the landing page, with Max and the alarm. If there’s a way to back this all up as one swf, that’d be spectacular, but from what I can tell, it’s using a mix of swf files and other files to deliver content.
Thank you for reading, and I hope exploring the site is/was fun! If you find anything I didn’t, please reblog and add!

1- Hecate
Tumblr media
1- Hecate
Greek Titan of Witches, Witchcraft, Sorcery, and Crossroads.
When I first began this project, I knew that I wanted to end with Hecate. She is simultaneously the final and the first, our alpha and omega of Witchcraft. She dominates popular witch lore, but you would never know it as she resides in the shadows, side plots, and brief mentions. Only when you seek her out does she reveal herself to you, lighting your path while casting shadows and ghosts. Many, if not all, modern Witches, Pagans, and Wiccans see Hecate as a Goddess of Witches, amongst other appropriate attributes, and continue her worship and reverence now several thousand years ongoing.
As is the case with most of Greek Mythology, Hecate has multiple origin myths and genealogies. This is most likely the result of her originating outside of the Greeks, and being adapted and merged with the existing pantheon. Most traditions have Hecate as the daughter of the Titans Perses, titan of destruction, and Asteria, titan of falling stars and nocturnal prophecy. Hecate was their only child, and was able to retain her powers post Zeus’ coup as she helped him fight the Giants. As child of Asteria, her grandmother was the Titan of the Moon, Phoebe, and her cousin was Olympian lunar all-star Artemis.
There are various stories in which Hecate plays a part. Her most notable and appropriate for this time of year, however, is her integral role in assisting Demeter’s search for her beloved daughter, Persephone. Upon Persephone’s decent into Hades, Hecate, through the light of her torches, helped Demeter discover her daughter in the underworld. As such, Hecate has become a chthonic Goddess, and Persephone’s yearly attendant and psychopomp to the underworld. Her position as gatekeeper and guide to Hades solidifies many of her numerous attributes.
Hecate is associated with ghosts, necromancy, and magic. She is identified with crossroads, torches, and dark hounds. She was a common household deity for the Athenian—her shrines placed in doorways and city gates to both protect from restless spirits and bestow blessings and safe passage. Her worship and cult was as extensive as her various attributes, with temples and shrines scattered across the Mediterranean. As a key figure in the Persephone saga, Hecate was integral in the ancient Eleusinian Mysteries, impacting secret societies and occult rituals to this day.
Out of all her characteristics, her association with the crossroads is perhaps the most pertinent to my series. Most often, we think of crossroads as the intersection of two roads, yielding four directions. This was not always the case, however, as it was more common to have a proverbial ‘fork in the road’, yielding three directions. This is the kind of crossroads in which Hecate resides. Her statues depict her in triplicity, forearms outstretched, holding torches, keys, serpents, daggers, etc. One face in each direction, Hecate is the arbiter of passages, and in this way is the consort of the God Hermes.
Hecate is one of the original Triple Goddesses of Witchcraft, if not the primordial one. Her triplicity has defined much of Modern Pagan theology, with her stance representing the three phases of the moon, Waxing, Full, and Waning (Maiden, Mother, Crone respectively). Her mythological genealogy as the granddaughter of Phoebe and cousin to Artemis has yielded Hecate as a Goddess of the Moon in her own right, most often known as the unseen phase of the moon, the New Moon (however she is just as often associated with all moon phases). In Greek/Roman Mythology, Hecate joins many lunar goddesses in addition to Phoebe and Artemis, including Selene and Diana. The five were often conflated, confused, and worshiped both in tandem and in conflict. This ever shifting, impossible to pin down, lunar association echos her transient nature of existing in the shadows.
Hecate is both mysterious and severe. Her face is hidden behind her torches, or on the dark side of the moon, however her presence is a constant. She is life, death, and rebirth. She is both light and dark magic. She was beloved in her association with rites of passage like childbirth, and feared in her role as Queen of Shades, present at the final rite of passage, death. Her nature has permeated my entire series in such a profound and indescribable way, I can only show you:
#93: Lilith— often worshiped by modern Pagans in tandem with Hecate #92: Circe: Daughter of Hecate #89, #54, #39: Bewitched: A common expression “For Hecate’s Sake!” Occurs throughout the show. #79: Aradia: Daughter of Lucifer and Diana. Often seen as the daughter of an amalgamated Diana-Hecate. #70: Medea: Priestess of Hecate #67: Charmed: The Halliwell Sisters: Appears in the episode “The Wedding from Hell” #56: Ceridwen: Often worshiped in tandem with Hecate as Dark Mothers by modern Pagans. . #52, #27: Practical Magic: The necromancy ritual the Owen’s Sisters perform, albeit pronounced incorrectly. “Black as night, erase death from our sight. White as light, Mighty Hecate make it right.” #10: Willow Rosenberg: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Mentioned in several episodes and referred to as “Queen and Protectress of Witches.” #7: American Horror Story: Coven: Supreme Fiona Goode invokes Hecate “Come to me Hecate, Mother of Angels, Cosmic World Soul.” #5: The Weird Sisters: Macbeth: Hecate is their master
This list is pretty fitting for a Goddess whose name etymologically may mean “she that operates from afar.” She is seldom a central figure or even visible, however witches from the Owens to the Goodes, from Willow Rosenberg to Endora, invoke her name and ask for her spirit, guidance, and presence. Hecate, in many ways, is both the first witch, and the last. She is our alpha and omega. She is the embodiment of power and strength. As a Goddess of Witchcraft, she does not merely exist in the margins of society like the rest of us—She is the margin itself.
Hail Hecate.
“Hecate, Cerridwen. Dark Mother take us in. Hecate, Cerridwen. Let us be reborn.”

The Fiery stimulator
By Fiona MacCarthy
He was the most inventive and engaging of all the Bauhaus artists, galvanising the movement to ever-greater heights. What a shame Britain never embraced László Moholy-Nagy when he fled the Nazis in the 1930s.
László Moholy-Nagy, one of the leading figures in the Bauhaus, arrived to work in England in 1935, two years after that experimental school of art and design was closed down by the Nazis. His English was not fluent. Taken to a party in London by John Betjeman, he said smilingly to his hostess: "Thank you for your hostilities.”
The remark was not entirely inappropriate: Moholy-Nagy's reception in this country was not an open-armed one. Even so-called modernists found him baffling, the boiler-suited technocrat with the magnificent grin. His sheer versatility was suspect in a country where they liked you to be one thing or another. Painter, sculptor, photographer, film-maker, industrial designer, typographer: what was Moholy-Nagy not? The Bauhaus itself, which placed great emphasis on programmes and production, seemed alien to a nation still steeped in the gentler traditions of the arts and crafts. London Transport's design impresario Frank Pick expressed a widely held artistic xenophobia in dismissing Moholy-Nagy as "a gentleman with a modernistic tendency who produces pastiches of photographs of a surrealistic type, and I am not at all clear why we should fall for this. It is international, or at least continental. Let us leave the continent to pursue their own tricks."
When he arrived in London, however, László Moholy-Nagy was at the height of his extraordinary powers.
László Nagy had been born almost 40 years before, on a wheat farm in southern Hungary, near the village of Moholy, whose name he later appropriated. His father deserted the family and he was brought up by his mother and his grandmother. He looked back at that childhood as "a terrible great quietness". The young László began to study law in Budapest but soon afterwards was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army, fighting in Galicia and on the ferocious Russian front in the first world war. He was wounded, hospitalised and suffered horribly. On and around the battlefields, he made his first drawings and wrote poetry. One of these poems, Light Vision, deals with principles that from then on were to obsess him: "Space, time, material - are they one with light?”
Through the 1920s, Moholy-Nagy was part of the new artistic movement sweeping across Europe, a revolutionary movement in which representational and story-telling art was jettisoned in favour of the abstract, primordial, elemental. Functional design for mass production and mass distribution was seen as a means of repairing the devastating social damage done by war. This was the brilliantly iconoclastic period in which Mondrian and Van Doesburg were pursing the objective harmonies of rectangles and primary colours in their paintings, and Gabo was conceiving his constructivist monument to the industrial revolution. Moholy-Nagy was especially attuned to the Russian suprematists Malevich and Lissitsky, with their visions of aerodromes and radio stations, architecture of mass communication for a brave new world. A famous group photograph of the Constructivist and Dadaist Congress held in Weimar in 1922 shows Moholy-Nagy alongside Hans Arp and Tristan Tzara, taunters of the bourgeoisie.
Moholy-Nagy was fundamentally a painter. "It is my gift to project my vitality, my building power, through light, colour, form. I can give life as a painter," he wrote at the end of that most destructive war. His early visual experiments took the form of a return to fundamentals, exploring the relations of colour, shape, position by glueing coloured strips of paper on to backgrounds of varying tones. One of the attractions that constructivism had for him was that it expressed the pure forms of nature: "the direct colour, the spatial rhythm, the equilibrium of form".
At the same time, he was fascinated by the city, by the skyscrapers and factories, the fast-developing industrial landscape of the early 20th century. Moholy-Nagy thrived on ideas of dynamic progress, of mechanisation, the inherent possibilities of new materials. As he wrote in MA (Today), the avant-garde magazine then being published in Vienna: "Everyone is equal before the machine. I can use it; so can you. It can crush me; the same can happen to you." His grasp of new technologies was prophetic.
Moholy-Nagy was entranced by the mechanised production of artworks, ridiculing the artist's traditional stance as individual creator. In 1922, his Telephone Paintings were exhibited at Der Sturm gallery in Berlin. The series of three enamel panels had been ordered from a factory specialising in commercial signs. The geometric motif of vertical bar and two crucifix forms was identical on all three panels; only the panel sizes differed. Moholy-Nagy later claimed that he had ordered them by telephone, giving his instructions to the sign painter by means of graph paper and a standard industrial colour chart. This may not be entirely true: Moholy-Nagy could be a joker. Still, he titled the Telephone Paintings not with words but with letters and numbers like a factory production code.
He foresaw photography as the artform of the future. As the discovery of one-point perspective gave creative impetus to the Renaissance, so Moholy-Nagy realised that technical advances in photography and film would transform social and cultural values as the 20th century progressed. He predicted: "It is not the person ignorant of writing but the one ignorant of photography who will be the illiterate of the future.”
Moholy-Nagy settled in Berlin in 1920 and married soon after. His Czech-born wife, Lucia, had trained as a photographer and they worked together in developing the photogram, a photographic image made without a camera when objects on coated paper are exposed to light. They developed photoplastics, fluent, lyrical and curious photomontages, sometimes with drawn additions, which had enormous influence on 1960s graphics. At the same time, Moholy-Nagy was one of the first designers to realise the potential of photography in advertising and commercial art.
He was a born teacher, convinced that everyone had talent. In 1923, he joined the staff of the Bauhaus, which had been founded by Walter Gropius at Weimar four years before. Kandinsky, Klee, Feininger and Schlemmer were already teaching there. He was brought in at a time when the school was undergoing a decisive change of policy, shedding its original emphasis on handcraft. The driving force was now "the unity of art and technology". Moholy-Nagy was entrusted with teaching the preliminary course in principles of form, materials and construction - the basis of the Bauhaus's educational programme. His co-tutor on the course was the painter Josef Albers, whose career was to develop in parallel with his. Albers and Moholy-Nagy are joint subjects of a major exhibition at Tate Modern, London, which serves as a reminder of the exhilaration of being at the Bauhaus at that time.
The hyper-energetic Moholy-Nagy also ran the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar and later in the purpose-designed buildings at Dessau. The metal shop was the most successful of departments at the Bauhaus in fulfilling Gropius's vision of art for mass production, redefining the role of the artist to embrace that of designer as we have now come to understand the term. The workshop experimented with glass and Plexiglas as well as metal in developing the range of lighting that has almost come to define the Bauhaus. The lamps were produced in small production runs, and some were taken up by outside factories. The royalties made a welcome contribution to the school's always precarious finances. Wilhelm Wagenfeld's table lamp, with its sheeny opaque dome, has remained in production and spawned many imitations. As we choose our pseudo-Bauhaus lighting from Ikea, it is Moholy-Nagy we must thank.
"Fiery stimulator", "principal drummer boy and teeth chatterer": the recollections of other Bauhaus masters and his students have left a strong impression of Moholy-Nagy's galvanic personality. He became in effect chief publiciser of the Bauhaus, designing the layout for its publications and directing the typography for the "Bauhaus books", textbooks of Bauhaus principles. Through his "new typography", Moholy-Nagy set an unmistakable visual image for the school using simple modern letter forms, strong colour, intriguing combinations of photography and text. Single letters, vowels, consonants would be isolated and treated as compositional elements. This typographic approach was serious yet comedic, as was the Bauhaus itself.
It was also at the Bauhaus that Moholy-Nagy began the project that was to preoccupy him over the next decade and take its place in his mythology as a kind of alter ego, a Frankenstein's monster. This is the Light Prop for an Electric Stage, a huge kinetic sculpture for the theatre composed of colour, light and movement: light as performance art. The light prop takes the form of a cubic box containing a glass and polished metal mechanism designed to stand alone on a darkened stage. The audience watches, through a porthole in the box, the machine's direct response to a two-minute illumination sequence created by 116 coloured lightbulbs flashing on and off.
In 1930, the light prop was the hero of Moholy-Nagy's abstract film Light Play: Black-White-Grey. Though I knew the work well from illustrations, it was only last summer that I came face to face with the lifesize replica at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. I found myself agreeing with Moholy-Nagy: its effect was magical beyond belief.
By the time the light prop was at last completed, he was embarking on yet another life. Moholy-Nagy was now remarried, to Sybil Pietsch, a film scriptwriter he had worked with in Berlin. As the German political situation darkened, they travelled hopefully to London via Holland. Moholy-Nagy's friendship with JG Crowther, science correspondent of the then Manchester Guardian, had encouraged him to seek refuge in this country. He was also influenced by his reading of Voltaire's Lettres Philosophiques sur les Anglais, which convinced him that England was a haven of free speech.
Of the influx of mainly Jewish refugees arriving in England in the 1930s, many were artists, architects, designers. Moholy-Nagy had been preceded by his former Bauhaus colleagues Gropius and Marcel Breuer. He and Sybil joined them briefly at Lawn Road Flats in Hampstead, one of London's few modernist buildings, before moving into their own house in Golders Green.
There was a solidarity among the émigrés. A touching picture of Moholy-Nagy at this period shows him on the promenade at Bexhill-on-Sea photographing the just completed De La Warr pavilion, whose architect, Erich Mendelsohn, was another recent exile from Berlin. Moholy-Nagy's fellow Hungarian Alexander Korda commissioned him to design special effects for the science fiction film Things to Come. He was asked to make a film about the sex life of the lobster, at a time when David Attenborough was still a boy. A quizzical Moholy-Nagy spent several weeks on the Sussex coast getting to know the fishermen, grappling with their dialect, recording their families and close community. At the other end of the social spectrum, he took photographs for Bernard Fergusson's book Portrait of Eton and John Betjeman's Oxford University Chest. Where Sybil responded to 1930s England with an often explosive impatience at its snobbery, Moholy-Nagy remained unemotional, professional. The English class structure was the object of his fascinated observation.
But Moholy-Nagy was not totally cold-shouldered. He designed the publicity for Jack Pritchard's English modernist Isokon Furniture Company. One leaflet included a typically dreamlike small drawing of a figure floating in a bath, suggesting that a Breuer Long Chair gave a similar sensation. Imperial Airways commissioned him to design a mobile exhibition to tour the British empire in a railroad car, promoting the still-novel idea of air travel. He became display consultant for the menswear store Simpsons of Piccadilly, bemusing passersby with his abstract compositions of striped shirts and bowler hats. But these activities were desultory in relation to Moholy-Nagy's far-reaching design philosophy.
In 1936, he returned to Berlin intending to record the Olympics on 16mm film. His aim was to investigate spectator psychology, pursuing the physiological contrasts between the international visitors and the rabid German nationalists. At the entrance to the stadium, he met a former Bauhaus student now in SS uniform. His ex-pupil attempted to persuade him that by joining up with Hitler he could eventually influence the Nazis. The episode so disgusted him that he left Berlin immediately. Not long after, Moholy-Nagy's paintings were removed from public galleries in Essen, Hanover and Mannheim, branded "degenerate art”.
Moholy-Nagy sailed from Southampton in the SS Manhattan in July 1937. He had been appointed head of the New Bauhaus in Chicago. Joseph Albers, who had stayed on at the Bauhaus in Dessau until its closure by the Nazis, was by this time also in America, teaching at the radical Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Gropius now held the chair of architecture in Harvard. America appeared a more fertile ground than Britain for the promulgation of the Bauhaus's ideals.
Moholy-Nagy, ever questioning, observed that in the US, "the provocative statement is constantly annulled by chequebook and cocktail party. Am I on the same way?" The most inventive and engaging of all the Bauhaus artists died of leukaemia in 1946, bequeathing to the world one of the prime examples of mass-produced design of the mid-20th century - the 1951 Parker pen.

166. “Martinis & Bikinis,” 167. “Omnipop (It’s Only A Flesh Wound Lambchop),” 168. “Don’t Do Anything” by Sam Phillips
Sometimes blind-buying a record just pays off.
That was how I ended up with Sam Phillips’ 1994 release Martinis & Bikinis (#166), a slice of roots-pop gold and a gateway to a whole back catalogue. Her gritty barroom chanteuse voice carries shimmering harmonies with barbs of social commentary in the sugar pill. She takes aim at powerful hypocrites, environmental rapists, the spiritually hollow. "He wants to buy the things he doesn't understand / He wants all the credit / He wants the rights to the soul of every man,” is the portrait she draws of a particular soulless bigwig archetype in “Fighting With Fire."
T-Bone Burnett comes to her aid with his patented polished-jangle production, from the soul-lifting hook at the center of “I Need Love” to the rag-and-bone, chain-shaking dystopia of “Black Sky,” and Phillips' primordial, weary-toned take on John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth.” There’s a patina of Rubber Soul Beatles in the harpsichord-and-strings flavoring “Strawberry Road,” with yearning lyrics in a waltz time. “The things we’ve wanted, when we get them, are never enough, never what they seem / But they lead us to the road.”
There’s usually cause to worry when musicians start getting openly self-reflexive about the pop industry. To look at the cover of Omnipop (#167), from its winking title to the retro-futurist aesthetic of the cover photography, you’d be forgiven if you start having sweaty flashbacks to U2’s Pop or Madonna’s MDNA, where ventures into dance music come off as self-parodic clones of the real thing. And there are, for sure, lyrics in Phillips’ record where television is represented as a brain-sucking, false religious icon and the music industry as a plastic doll factory, which is pretty standard for this type of affair. But one could hardly accuse the tiki lounge vibes of “Zero Zero Zero!” or subtle menace of "Entertainmen” of trying to lure people into the discotheque.
It was worth another CD blind-buy (it’s the only one of her records not available on Spotify, which might've been a bad omen if I had checked there first). Unlike some other “message” albums, Phillips and Co. don’t lose track of her identity as an artist, preserving her voice even as she dons roles and disguises. "I think most songwriters have this urge to confess and it's just ... off-putting,” she said to Salon.com in 2002. “It’s not done with any kind of art. There's no humor. It's so serious and not interesting.” Her approach to lyrics is often elliptical and evocative, making the satire bite harder, as in “Animals on Wheels”: "Famous is fast / You don't have to be talented or do good work or be smart / It's perfect for me, but every time I go after it / My ideals run off with my heart."
T-Bone, her partner at the time, returns for production duties, and there’s some more surprising collaborators to be found in the liner notes. I’m pleased with myself for picking out the woozy tone of Jon Brion’s trademark Chamberlin playing on “Faster Pussycat To The Library!,” creating a sonic continuum with Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann. My biggest shock was to see the songwriting of the final track, “Slapstick Heart,” credited to Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe/Phillips, an R.E.M. joint venture that I’d never heard about. It’s not a cover, and I can’t find more information about the exact nature of the team-up (the closest I can figure via Wikipedia is the Pat McCarthy connection, who produced several of R.E.M.’s records not long after engineering this one.)
Phillips and Burnett had split by the time they wrapped up recording 2004’s A Boot and a Shoe, so it came to be that 2008’s Don’t Do Anything (#168) was her first solo-produced record. I remember the titular lead single being released on the web around the time I had become fully hooked via Martinis & Bikinis, and was entranced by the combination of her clear, unadorned vocal floating above the burbling bed of transistor radio guitar, hypnotic drums, and rising, percussive strings. It’s an approach also used on the opening and closing tracks “No Explanations” and “Watching Out of This World," where you sense the musicians gathered in a circle, while the instruments themselves are distorted and melded as to be nearly impossible to identify as individual parts. Others are more urgently present, like the fiddle that tears through the bridge of “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us,” or the ear-to-the-floor tom drums that drive “My Career in Chemistry."
Next up: the handful of Pink Floyd CDs on my shelf! Please do not be alarmed at any absences.

Three Suns Standing by Gunship Revolution for the Exalted 3rd Jumpstart.
Feeling a lot better, but am still fighting the last bits of this flu or whatever it is. Last week, though, was a sort of semi-conscious staggering from the one thing I could focus on each day to trying to rest/medicate/cough this thing out until the next day and the one thing I could concentrate on that day. And so on.
I did manage to work with BackerKit to send out the links for the Backer PDF for Pugmire. There was a hiccup on coding that they fixed pretty fast, all things considered, and then I not only Locked Down the pledges, but charged them for any additional Add-ons they might have added on to their pledges.
I think the timing for these three steps basically worked as intended by BK, so that’s good to see happen with our first use of their system. Next will come the address corrections right before shipping; so a few months down the line. Until we Shut Down the project then, anybody interested can still “Pre-Order” a bunch of Pugmire things like the books, and dice, and such. Here’s the link: http://ift.tt/1WC83B5
We’ll do a similar sequence for the Deluxe Changeling 20 KS, the Deluxe v20 Beckett’s Jyhad Diary KS, and the Scion 2e KS as their Backer PDFs get finished.
FYI, a Backer PDF is basically the beta version of the final book. Pretty much just like the Advance PDFs for our non-Kickstarted projects, we’re sending them out to folks to review and to get back to us with any errata they might find. Then, after we review and implement any errata that we agree needs tweaking, we replace the Backer or Advance PDF with the final version. Anybody who downloaded the Backer or Advance PDF can then re-download the PDF and get the final version automatically, and for free, as it sits in their DTRPG Library.
Strategy-wise, we’ve found that this errata phase really helps catch those last lingering bits that our developers and editors missed for any number of a variety of reasons. Most of all, though, it’s because no text is ever perfect. There is always something everybody missed. With this errata phase, we’re trying to get closer than ever before to catching as many boo-boos as humanly possible.

We’re exploring card game Kickstarters, packaging, and components, for Prince’s Gambit. I’m working on the KS pages this week for sure, and our videos are finished. Things look good, and we are all for starting the KS in Feb so long as the process of pulling the KS together cooperates. If so, then Monarchies of Mau KS would be next, after Gambit.

Rawhead and bloody bones
Steals naughty children from their homes,
Takes them to his dirty den
And they are never seen again.
So says the nursery rhyme that gives birth to Rawhead, the most fearsome entity to imperil the living since the infamous Roller. Once an obedient mummy by name of Benefre, a desperate bid by his cult fails in tragic fashion, and in so doing, sends him to the Devourerís waiting, corruptive maw. What remains of Benefreís ambitious soul rises again, impure and unholy, set to the execution of a scheme so baleful, it constitutes a heresy even among his own misbegotten kind.
All that stands between Rawhead and his terrible aim are a lone mummy, Kemsiyet, and what little remains of her cult following its destruction at Rawhead’s hands. Declan, her prized security aide, and Fiona, an Irish researcher only just recently inducted into the cult and its blood-soaked world, must fight both the odds and the clock in order to prevent a calamity the likes of which the world hasnít seen since the days of the mummies’ creation.

Amazon First Reads May 2021
Did you chosen your Amazon First Reads book for May? I only got around to choosing my Amazon First Reads book a few days ago. So her were last months choices and you can find out which book I chose.
Suspense
The Secrets of Us by Lucinda Berry, Pages: 271, Publication Date: 1 June 2021
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Dangerously addictive, The Secrets of Us is a pulse-pounding exploration of a disturbed psyche and the bond between two sisters desperate to escape a troubled past.
Foster sisters Krystal and Nichole have always been there for each other, so when Nichole is committed to a psychiatric hospital after trying to kill her husband, Krystal drops everything to defend her.
Scarred by a hard upbringing, Nichole and Krystal managed to construct comfortable lives for themselves. Krystal became a respected lawyer, and Nichole was happily married to an architect—until Nichole starts raving that her husband isn’t her husband, believing that he’s an imposter.
Driven by fierce loyalty, Krystal starts asking questions, but she’s not sure she can bear the answers. Her investigation leads to the sisters’ dark shared past…to a horrible tragedy and a well-guarded lie that cemented their sisterly bond.
But that lie can’t kill the truth—the battered, gasping, clawing truth that’s coming for them both. Now Krystal and Nichole must both fight for the lives they’ve built before they’re consumed by the one they left behind.
Historical Fiction
The Girls in the Attic by Marius Gabriel, Pages: 351, Publication Date: 1 June 2021

Synopsis: The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew.
Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich. So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged.
His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for. He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment. It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo. But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes.
When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives. But what will it cost him?
Mystery
Beneath Devil’s Bridge by Loreth Ann White, Pages: 344, Publication Date: 1 June 2021
Tumblr media
Synopsis: A true crime podcast yields new revelations about a shocking murder in a riveting novel of suspense by Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author Loreth Anne White.
True crime podcaster Trinity Scott is chasing breakout success, and her brand-new serial may get her there. Her subject is Clayton Jay Pelley. More than two decades ago, the respected family man and guidance counsellor confessed to the brutal murder of teenage student Leena Rai. But why he killed her has always been a mystery.
In a series of exclusive interviews from prison, Clayton discloses to Trinity the truth about what happened that night beneath Devil’s Bridge. It’s not what anyone in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Falls expects. Clayton says he didn’t do it. Was he lying then? Or now?
As her listeners increase and ratings skyrocket, Trinity is missing a key player in the story: Rachel Walczak, the retired detective who exposed Pelley’s twisted urges and put him behind bars. She’s not interested in playing Clayton’s game—until Trinity digs deeper and the podcast’s reverb widens. Then Rachel begins to question everything she thinks she knows about the past.
With each of Clayton’s teasing reveals, one thing is clear: he’s not the only one in Twin Falls with a secret.
Contemporary Fiction
These Tangled Vines by Julianne MacLean, Pages: 302, Publication Date: 1 June 2021

If Fiona has learned anything in life, it’s how to keep a secret—even from the father who raised her. She is the only person who knows about her late mother’s affair in Tuscany thirty years earlier, and she intends to keep it that way…until a lawyer calls with shocking news: her biological father has died and left her an incredible inheritance—along with two half siblings.
Fiona travels to Italy, where the family is shocked to learn of her existence and desperate to contest her share of the will. While the mystery of her mother’s affair is slowly unravelled, Fiona must navigate through tricky family relationships and tense sibling rivalries. Fiona both fears and embraces her new destiny as she searches for the truth about the fateful summer her mother spent in Italy and the father she never knew.
Spilling over with the sumptuous flavours and romance of Tuscany, These Tangled Vines takes readers on a breath taking journey of love, secrets, sacrifice, courage—and most importantly, the true meaning of family.
Domestic Thriller
The Darkest Flower by Kristin Wright, Pages: 296, Publication Date: 1 June 2021
Tumblr media
Synopsis: You’ll never believe the terrible things being said about the perfect president of the PTA.
Attempted murder? Inexplicable accident? Either way, a PTA mom struggled for her life in an elementary school cafeteria, poisoned by a wolfsbane-laced smoothie at the fifth-grade graduation party. Now all eyes are on the accused, the victim, and a woman hired to look deeper.
Ambitious defence attorney and single mother Allison Barton is anxious to escape the shadow of the low-down dog of a marquee partner carrying their renowned Virginia law firm. A win for her high-profile new client will give Allison the career she deserves. And PTA president Kira Grant certainly appears innocent—except for the toxic bloom in her backyard and perhaps a bit of a malicious streak. But no one said the innocent had to be likable—or entirely honest. Besides, with an image as carefully cultivated as her garden, Kira would be insane to risk everything on something as outrageous as the attempted murder of one of her closest friends.
What about those in Kira’s orbit, a sunny suburb of moms behaving badly? What do they really know about Kira? What does Kira know about them? For Allison, the answers are getting darker every day.

Watching as her mother thrives in a new job and meets younger men at the local gym, Alice struggles, reflecting on her parents’ marriage, her relationship with each of them, as she adjusts to being single again for the first time in twenty years. Then she finds her father’s old journal…and uncovers a shocking family secret that forces her to question everything she thought she knew about love, regret, family, and her own path forward.

Tumblr media
Synopsis: In an energetic debut novel about personal and professional chaos, author Addie Woolridge introduces a multicultural cast whose exploits are redefining the modern rom-com.
Killing it at work? Check. Gorgeous boyfriend? Check. Ambitions derailed by an insecure boss? Sigh—check.
Things were going a little too well for Dylan Delacroix. After upstaging her boss on a big account, she gets dispatched to the last place she wants to be: her hometown, Seattle. There, she must use her superstar corporate-consulting skills to curb the worst impulses of an impossibly eccentric tech CEO—if she doesn’t, she’s fired.
The fun doesn’t stop there: Dylan must also negotiate a ceasefire in the endless war between her bohemian parents and the straitlaced neighbours’. Adding to the chaos is a wilting relationship with her boyfriend and a blossoming attraction to the neighbours’ smoking-hot son.
Suddenly Dylan has a million checklists, each a mile long. As personal and professional pressures mount, she finds it harder and harder to stay on track. Having always relied on her ability to manage the world around her, Dylan’s going to need a new plan. She may be down, but she’s definitely not out.
Fantasy
Bacchanal by Veronica G Henry, Pages: 347, Publication Date: 1 June 2021
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Evil lives in a traveling carnival roaming the Depression-era South. But the carnival’s newest act, a peculiar young woman with latent magical powers, may hold the key to defeating it. Her time has come.
Abandoned by her family, alone on the wrong side of the colour line with little to call her own, Eliza Meeks is coming to terms with what she does have. It’s a gift for communicating with animals. To some, she’s a magical tender. To others, a she-devil. To a talent prospector, she’s a crowd-drawing oddity. And the Bacchanal Carnival is Eliza’s ticket out of the swamp trap of Baton Rouge.
Among fortune-tellers, carnies, barkers, and folks even stranger than herself, Eliza finds a new home. But the Bacchanal is no ordinary carnival. An ancient demon has a home there too. She hides behind an iridescent disguise. She feeds on innocent souls. And she’s met her match in Eliza, who’s only beginning to understand the purpose of her own burgeoning powers.

Memoir
The Puma Years by Laura Coleman, Pages: 298, Publication Date: 1 June 2021
Tumblr media
Synopsis: In this rapturous memoir, writer and activist Laura Coleman shares the story of her liberating journey in the Amazon jungle, where she fell in love with a magnificent cat who changed her life.
Laura was in her early twenties and directionless when she quit her job to backpack in Bolivia. Fate landed her at a wildlife sanctuary on the edge of the Amazon jungle where she was assigned to a beautiful and complex puma named Wayra. Wide-eyed, inexperienced, and comically terrified, Laura made the scrappy, make-do camp her home. And in Wayra, she made a friend for life.
They weren’t alone, not with over a hundred quirky animals to care for, each lost and hurt in their own way: a pair of suicidal, bra-stealing monkeys, a frustrated parrot desperate to fly, and a pig with a wicked sense of humour. The humans too were cause for laughter and tears. There were animal whisperers, committed staff, wildly devoted volunteers, handsome heartbreakers, and a machete-wielding prom queen who carried Laura through. Most of all, there was the jungle—lyrical and alive—and there was Wayra, who would ultimately teach Laura so much about love, healing, and the person she was capable of becoming.
Set against a turbulent and poignant backdrop of deforestation, the illegal pet trade, and forest fires, The Puma Years explores what happens when two desperate creatures in need of rescue find one another.
So my choice for May was: The Girls in the Attic.
