Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 14th April 1923
Saturday 14th April
We dined at three tables this evening at the Grafton Galleries, we being the Carlisles, the Prince of Wales,¹ Poppy Baring,² Mrs Coats,³ Alice Astor, Prince Henry⁴ and a little woman he is flirting [with], Prince George,⁵ Lady Alexandra Curzon,⁶ Serge Obolensky and Paul of Serbia. Paul Whiteman,⁷ an American, conducted his fabulous orchestra with intoxicating skill on hearing who was in the room. At about 11.30 the Prince of Wales decided to commandeer the band and we left . . . but where to go? We agreed on the Curzons’ house (which is closed for repairs). The Prince of Wales sent to St James Palace for a great deal of champagne: the band of twenty-eight musicians arrived and we all crept stealthily into the darkened house. But no glasses! Prince Henry and I searched the bedrooms and collected every available toothbrush glass . . . . At dawn we went out on the balcony and at last when the band was ready to collapse and we were exhausted we sadly separated. It was 7.30 Sunday morning. We walked up Pall Mall in our evening dress hunting taxis. The guard at Marlborough House⁸ recognised the young pink princes and presented arms. We have all sworn to secrecy about this hush party but I wonder how long it will be before all of London knows and gossips. I shan’t say a word.
1. Prince Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David (1894-1972), elder son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Prince of Wales 1911; succeeded his father in January 1936 as King Edward VIII, abdicated December 1936; created Duke of Windsor on his abdication; married Wallis Warfield Simpson (1896-1986), of Baltimore, in 1937.
2. Helen Azalea ‘Poppy’ Baring (1901-80), daughter of Sir Godfrey Baring Bt, and Eva Hermione Mackintosh: the Duke of York had proposed to her in 1921 but his mother, Queen Mary, had forbidden the union because of her supposed unsuitability. She was also vetoed as a bride for Prince George, whose mistress she became. She married William Piers Thursby (1904-77) in 1928. She ran a dress shop in Down Street, off Piccadilly in London.
3. Audrey Evelyn James (1902-68), daughter of William Dodge James, married in 1922 Captain Muir Dudley Coats MC (1897-1927) of the Scots Guards. Having been widowed she married in 1930 Marshall James Field (1893-1956), an American department-store heir, investment banker and newspaper proprietor. They divorced in 1934.
4. Prince Henry William Frederick Albert (1900-74), third son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Duke of Gloucester 1928; married in 1935 Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott (1901-2004), daughter of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch.
5. Prince George Edward Alexander Edmund (1902-42), fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary, created Duke of Kent 1934; married in 1934 Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906-68). Although known before his marriage to have had a number of mistresses he was also believed to be bisexual, and became one of Channon’s closest friends. He was killed on active service with the RAF when his flying boat crashed into a hillside in Caithness.
6. Lady Alexandra Naldera ‘Baba’ Curzon (1904-95), Lord Curzon’s youngest daughter by his first marriage. In 1925 she married Major Edward Dudley ‘Fruity’ Metcalfe (1887-1957), confidant and equerry of the future King Edward VIII, but conducted a number of affairs with men in high society, notably Lord Halifax, between the wars. Because of her flirtations with various fascists in the 1930s her nickname morphed into ‘Baba Blackshirt’.
7. Paul Samuel Whiteman (1890-1967) was one of America’s most famous band leaders.
8. Residence of Queen Alexandra in her widowhood.

NAME PREDICTIONS FOR 2021 ROYAL (AND ROYAL-ADJACENT) BABIES
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank
So for a little girl, I’m thinking florals. I’m thinking older, yet still fashionable, names. I’m thinking Violet, I’m thinking Dora, I’m thinking Eleanor, I’m thinking Florence.
Violet Elizabeth Eleanor Rose
Violet Anne Elizabeth
Dora (Isadora?) Elizabeth Mary
Margaret Elizabeth Rose
For a boy, I’m thinking Andrew basic boys names. I’m thinking James. I’m thinking Jasper. I’m thinking Oscar. I’m thinking Harold. I’m thinking if a grandchild of Philip doesn’t use his name soon I’m going to riot.
James Philip William Andrew
Jasper Andrew Philip Charles
Oscar Philip George
James Arthur Charles Edward
Pippa Middleton and James Matthews
This is cheating because Pips isn’t a royal but she did give Arthur a very royal name. For a girl, I’m thinking classic and royal-adjacent names. I’m thinking Elizabeth. I’m thinking Grace. I’m thinking Delilah. I’m thinking Alice. I’m thinking Catherine would be in a girls’ name somewhere.
Elizabeth Catherine Grace
Delilah Elizabeth Mary
Alice Isabelle Rose
Grace Elizabeth Adelaide
For a boy, I’m going for the same vibe, but they’ve used a lot of family boy names by now so I’m going for James. I’m going for David. I’m going for Edward. I’m going for Alexander.
Edward James Alexander
David James Francis
James Spencer Alexander
Zara and Mike Tindall
Will we break the streak of Phillips’ girls? I’m thinking Ava. I’m thinking I would be shocked if it wasn’t Ava. I’m thinking short, sweet names. I’m thinking Arya/Aria. I’m thinking Ella. I’m thinking Ivy (I know I went off brand there)
Ava Rose Tindall
Ella Rose Tindall
Clara Anne Tindall
Freya Rose Tindall
For a boy, I’m thinking Philip. I will manifest my baby with a Philip in his name, Louis Arthur Charles. I’m thinking short names. I’m thinking not Finn because it doesn’t sound right with Tindall. I’m thinking Theo. I’m thinking Beau. I’m thinking Rowan. I’m thinking Lucas.
Theo Philip Tindall
Lucas Philip Tindall
Philip Rowan Tindall
Theo Charles Tindall
Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip
I’m purely basing this off what sounds vaguely Swedish and good with Alexander and Gabriel. I’m thinking Freya for a girl. I’m thinking Emilia/Amilia/Mila. I’m thinking Mathilda. I’m thinking Astrid/Ingrid.
Freya Ingrid Silvia Britt
Emilia Renate Marie
Mathilda Renate Lilian Marie
Ingrid Silvia Marie
For a boy, I’m thinking Theo/Theodor/Theodore. I’m thinking Raphael. I’m thinking Julian. I’m thinking Noah.
Theodor(e) Oscar Folke
Theodor(e) Edmund Philip Walther
Julian Oscar Frederik
Raphael Walther Gustaf

GEORGE
1st Duke of Kent
(born 1902 - died 1942)
Tumblr media
pictured above is a portrait of the Duke of Kent, painted by Fülöp de László in 1934
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
GEORGE EDWARD ALEXANDER EDMUND was born in 1902 at York Cottage, the residence of his parents at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
He was born during the reign of his grandfather Edward VII, King of the United Kingdom, as one of the youngest sons of George, Prince of Wales, and Princess Victoria Mary of Teck.
Thus, he was born a member of the British branch of the HOUSE OF SAXE COBURG AND GOTHA. And, as a grandson of the Monarch in the male line, he was from birth a PRINCE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM. Though, as an untitled child, he was styled by the title of his father and was known as PRINCE GEORGE OF WALES.
When his grandfather died in 1910, his father succeeded as George V, King of United Kingdom.
At the age of 13, he was sent to a Naval college and subsequently served in the Royal Navy.
When he was 14 years old, by 1917, there was a huge anti-German feeling in the United Kingdom because of World War I. So, his father decided to relinquish their German roots and changed the family name from House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to HOUSE OF WINDSOR.
During his youth, he was a playboy, had affairs with many women, and is rumoured to have been addicted to drugs.
Some people say that he had an illegitimate child from his affair with ALICE (KIKI) GWYNNE, a married American socialite. He was 23 years old when this child was supposedly born in 1926.
Check details about his purported child at the end of this post!
At 31 years old, he became engaged to a cousin of Greek Royalty. So, in preparation for his wedding, in October 1934, he was created DUKE OF KENT, EARL OF ST ANDREWS, and BARON DOWNPATRICK by his father.
In November 1934, his wedding to 28-year-old PRINCESS MARÍNA OF GREECE AND DENMARK took place. She was the last foreign Princess to marry into the British Royal Family. Her parents were Prince Nikólaos of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Yelyena Vladimirovna of Russia. With her, he had three children.
Check a list of his legitimate children at the end of this post!
When his father died in 1936, his eldest brother briefly succeeded as King Edward VIII, abdicating months later. So, his second eldest brother Albert, Duke of York, acceded as King George VI.
Later in life, in 1937, he transitioned from the Royal Navy to serve in the Royal Air Force, at the age of 34.
But, his life was cut short, when in 1942, while on service for the Royal Air Force, his plane crashed on Eagle's Rock in Scotland. And, the Duke of Kent died at 39 years old.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
After his death, his 7-year-old eldest son, Prince Edward, succeeded as Duke of Kent and on his other titles. To this day, his descendants still hold his titles.
-------------------- ~ -------------------- ~ --------------------
GEORGE and his wife MARÍNA had three children.
Edward, Duke of Kent - husband of Katharine Worsley;
Princess Alexandra of Kent - wife of Sir Angus Ogilvy; and
Prince Michael of Kent - husband of Baroness Marie Christine of Reibnitz.

And, he may have had illegitimate children.
From his affair with ALICE (Kiki):
possibly Michael Canfield - husband first of Caroline Bouvier, and second of Frances Laura Charteris.

Possibilities for Bridgerton Sequel (because as much fun as the regiment of siblings is, an army of cousins would be so much funnier)
1832-Daphne and Simon’s eldest (The show changed them from a girl to a boy, so while 18 would be fine for a girl, it would be scandalously young for a boy, which I think would be hilarious. Perhaps Lord Basset succeeds in running away to Gretna Green with Miss Joliffe where his uncle failed.)

What do you think Henry VII remembers, if anything, of his other uncle Henry VI?
This is such an interesting question and something that I myself have been wondering, so thank you for providing me with the opportunity to expand my thoughts on here 🌹
We know that Henry VII only ever saw his uncle King Henry VI once during his life, when he was 13 years old. However, I’d argue King Henry must have caused quite a great impression on him, and considering Henry Tudor was old enough at that time, also a profoundly lasting one. So far young Henry Earl of Richmond had been living as a ward of his uncle Jasper’s enemies, the Herberts. By 1470 his old guardian, William Herbert, had been executed, and then, as the Earl of Warwick changed sides and brought about Henry VI’s readeption, Henry Tudor was returned to his uncle Jasper who took him to London to meet King Henry VI. That Jasper felt like acquainting his nephew with his brother denotes a special degree of closeness and advocates for his idea of family, in my opinion.
According to André, Henry VII’s court poet and self-styled regius historiographus, on 27 October 1470 Henry VI held ‘a splendid feast with the nobles and best men of the kingdom’ to commemorate his return to the throne. As the king was washing his hands, young Richmond was brought to his presence, and according to André, ‘the king prophesied that someday the boy would undertake the governance of the kingdom and would have all things under his own power.’ Polydore Vergil, a historian that began his service under Henry VII in 1506, wrote in his Three Books that in that 1470 meeting ‘the king... is reported to have said:’
“This truly, this is he unto whom both we and our adversaries must yield and give over the dominion.”
It seems not even Vergil lends much credence to this tale as expressed by his choice of words: reported to have said. As expected, this myth has largely been viewed as Tudor propaganda and indeed the episode has been immortalised in Shakespeare’s Henry VI part III. In the play, King Henry VI meets a toddler Henry Richmond (then escorted by Somerset), calls him ‘England’s hope’, and says Richmond was ‘Likely in time to bless a regal throne’. Given that King Henry VI had his own son Prince Edward as his heir at the time, it seems unlikely he would ever have said such a thing. However, if anything remotely close to that happened, then I agree with Leanda de Lisle in saying that it must have been King Henry VI taking Henry Tudor to be his own son Edward, who thanks to his imprisonment in the Tower he had not seen for five years (and would not ever see again). It’s absurdly sad to think King Henry VI would confound his nephew with his son but arguably also not out of the realm of possibility. We don’t know if Henry Tudor saw his uncle King Henry again, but it’s also not unlikely that he, his mother and uncle Jasper stayed at court for the feast of All Hallows’ (1 November) and All Souls’ Day (2 November).
If King Henry VI ever made such prophecy, wittingly or not, then it must have greatly impacted on Henry Tudor. Henry VII believed to have been chosen by God to, against all odds, become king of England. He once wrote about ‘the crown which it has pleased God to give us with the victory over our enemy at our first field’. Henry Tudor was reported to be very pious—he made pilgrimages to the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury every Easter, as well as frequent pilgrimages to the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and donations to the shrine of St Vincent Ferrer in Brittany. He also founded the cult of the Breton saint St Armel in England and boosted the teachings of St Francis by his patronage of the Franciscan order. He especially favoured the Observants (the Franciscans, also known as the Greyfriars), granting them annuities for the establishment of monasteries in England and abroad. It seems he also favoured staying at religious houses when travelling or going on progress around the kingdom.
Most importantly, Henry VII held a singular devotion to the Virgin Mary and his adoption of the red rose as his personal symbol—aside from dynastic reasons—had everything to do with the religious connotations of that flower. Henry VII could have associated himself with his uncle Henry VI by adopting his antelope badge, for example, but instead, he chose the five-petal flower associated with the Virgin Mary and the Passion of Christ. The Franciscans were noted for their devotion to the Passion, and Henry VII had come in contact with the Observants during his exile in Brittany. The rose had five petals like the five wounds of Christ—St Bernard of Clairvaux once stated: “As many wounds as there are on the Saviour’s body, so many roses are there! Look at His feet and His hands; do you not see roses?”
Forgive me for still going on a tangent about it, but Henry VII’s personal devotion to the Virgin Mary and the doctrine of her Immaculate Conception is exemplified in his Book of Hours, where a miniature shows a figure representing the king kneeling at a prayer desk before a vision of the Virgin as a baby held by her mother, St Anne (or, alternatively, The Virgin and the Child Jesus). His devotion to the Virgin was also highlighted in his rebuilding of the Lady Chapel (now Henry VII’s Chapel) at Westminster Abbey which I will return to in a moment.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure but I think it was Vergil who reported Henry VII as having said that religion was his ‘continual refuge’ during exile. His piety has been largely attributed to the influence of his mother Margaret Beaufort, herself also a very pious woman. But given how many years—and formative years those were—they spent apart, I imagine that Henry must have looked up to someone closer to him at the time, namely his uncle Jasper Tudor. We know that after the death of Catherine of Valois Jasper and his brother Edmund were raised by nuns at Barking Abbey, and that then at some point they joined King Henry VI’s court. According to John Blacman, Henry VI’s biographer and chaplain writing in 1485:
[…] and like pains did [Henry VI] apply in the case of his half-brothers, the Lords Jasper and Edmund, in their boyhood and youth; providing for them most strict and safe guardianship, putting them under the care of virtuous and worthy priests, both for teaching and for right living and conversation, lest the untamed practices of youth should grow rank if they lacked any to prune them.
Blacman also claimed that the king personally protected his half-brothers from sexual temptation by keeping ‘careful watch through hidden windows of his chamber’ (yes, I know). Like his uncle King Henry VI, Henry VII would also set a court that ‘maintained the highest standards of sexual behaviour’. Indeed, Retha Warnicke made an extensive compilation of scandals during the first two Tudor reigns and not a single case of sexual misconduct was found to have taken place during Henry VII’s time, marking his court as a decidedly different one than Edward IV’s had been.
Going back to Henry VI’s supposed prophecy, his words surely must have acquired a great weight in Henry Tudor’s mind by 1483 when he made his bid to the English throne. By that time King Henry VI had become a popular saint in England and even though Edward IV had tried to have him modestly—and somewhat obscurely—buried in Chertsey Abbey, Surrey, people had started to flock to his grave. A peasant claimed that Henry VI helped him when he had a bean trapped in his ear, which only popped out after he prayed to the king. Painted images of King Henry VI began showing up in churches around the country, like this one at Barton in Norfolk:
Tumblr media
One of King Henry VI’s most ardent devotees was Henry Tudor’s mother Margaret Beaufort (Jasper’s feelings towards the cult are unknown) who had met her kinsman when she was about nine years old. When King Henry VI allegedly offered her the option of remaining married to Suffolk’s son or be remarried to his brother Edmund, Margaret says St Nicholas came to her in a dream dressed as a bishop, telling her to choose Edmund. Again, if this story is true or not, we may never know, but Margaret told that to her confessor John (bishop, then saint) Fisher—why would a famously pious woman such as Margaret Beaufort lie to her own confessor, thus committing a sin? It might be that the events took a mystical turn in Margaret’s imagination as a young girl, but that she associated divine intervention to hers and her son’s fate, and likewise to King Henry VI’s proposal, is clear.
It seems Richard III tried to control King Henry VI’s ever-growing cult by moving Henry VI’s body from Chertsey Abbey to St George’s Chapel at Windsor, a place where visitors wouldn’t have easy access to the king. Nevertheless, when Henry VII came to the throne he wholeheartedly encouraged pilgrimages to the place. Henry VII launched an official campaign to have his uncle canonised, with several petitions to popes Innocent VIII, Alexander VI and Julius II. Henry also ordered the compilation of a book of miracles worked by his uncle, and a biography of Henry VI was published in 1500 claiming that Henry VI had been ever pious and chaste during his life, towards his queen never behaving ‘unseemly ... but with all conjugal honesty and gravity’. Henry VII planned to have the body of King Henry VI re-interred at the heart of the new Lady Chapel he was planning at Westminster Abbey.
However much Henry VII enjoyed good relations with the papacy, especially Pope Innocent VIII, his campaign to have his uncle King Henry VI canonised never came into fruition. Henry VII decided for him and his wife to be buried at his new Lady Chapel instead, next to the tomb of his grandmother Queen Catherine of Valois. In his will, he stated his wish for his body to be buried:
“in the Chapell where our said graunt Dame laye buried, the which Chapell we have begoune to buylde of newe, in the honour of our blessed Lady.”
That doesn’t mean Henry VII set aside the memory of his uncle King Henry VI. He employed the same man that was overseeing the construction of the Lady Chapel at Westminster, Reginald Bray, to continue the rebuilding of St George’s Chapel at Windsor set in motion by his predecessor Edward IV (it came to be informally known as the Bray Chapel). The modest thirteenth-century chapel of Edward the Confessor was expanded into a vast cathedral-like chapel where, importantly, Henry VI’s body was placed alongside a famous relic, the fragment of the True Cross (a reliquary known as the Cross of Gneth) and the bones of John Schorne (revered for curing gout and toothache).
We may argue that Henry VII’s campaign to have King Henry VI’s canonised was fundamentally political (much like Richard II’s campaign for Edward II) as many historians have done. King Henry VI as a saint, combined with his supposed prophecy, would successfully contribute to the image of Henry VII’s reign as one chosen by God. When we put Henry VII’s religious devotion into perspective, though, his efforts to have ‘the glorious King Henry’ canonised take another dimension—in fact, there’s no doubt that in Henry VII’s eyes God had intervened in his favour. Henry VII’s will also stated his wish for an image of himself to be placed in St Edward’s chapel at Westminster, depicting him returning to God and the Virgin Mary the circlet with which he had been crowned at the Battle of Bosworth.
This is me purely speculating, but I think that even though Henry VII only came in contact with King Henry VI once in his life, his half-uncle might have exercised a great influence on him through his uncle Jasper. Jasper seemed to have been genuinely attached to his brother Henry on a personal level as well as devoted to his political cause. If Henry VI’s saintly qualities had been enough to impress Margaret Beaufort, it is very likely that they might have impressed young Henry of Richmond as well.

I just heard about Prince George, Duke of Kent. I was wondering if you knew anything interesting about him? Sounds like an interesting guy
Some facts about him,
His full name was George Edward Alexander Edmund (Edmund should make a comeback in the RF!)
He was born on the 20th December 1902 and sadly died just 39 on the 25th August 1942
He was the 4th son of King George V and Queen Mary. His elder siblings were the later King Edward VIII/Duke of Windsor, King George VI, Princess Mary later Countess of Harewood and also Prince Henry, The Duke of Gloucester. There was another siblings, younger than him, Prince John, who tragically passed away at just 13.
He became Duke of Kent in 1934
Prince George served in the Royal Navy in the 1920s and then briefly as a civil servant. In the late 1930s, he served as an RAF officer, initially as a staff officer at RAF Training Command and then, from July 1941, as a staff officer in the Welfare Section of the RAF Inspector General’s Staff. He was killed in a military air-crash on 25 August 1942.
As a young man, the Duke came to the opinion that the future lay in aviation. It became his passion, and in 1929, the Duke earned his pilot’s licence. He was the first of the royal family to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air. Before his flying days, he entered the Royal Navy and was trained in intelligence work while stationed at Rosyth
After leaving the navy, he briefly held posts at the Foreign Office and later the Home Office
In 1939 he returned to active service as a rear admiral in the Royal Navy, but in April 1940, transferred to the Royal Air Force. He temporarily relinquished his rank as an air officer to assume the post of staff officer at RAF Training Command in the rank of group captain, so that he would not be senior to more experienced officers. On 28 July 1941, he assumed the rank of air commodore in the Welfare Section of the RAF Inspector General’s Staff. In this role, he went on official visits to RAF bases to help boost wartime morale
He had many dalliances before and after marriage, from high society types to Hollywood celebs. Also with both men and women. In fact, one of his longest relationships was with Noel Coward.
Some other notable names include musical star Jessie Matthews, writer Cecil Roberts and apparently he shared Kiki Preston in a ménage à trois with Argentine Jorge Ferrara
The Duke of Kent is rumoured to have been addicted to drugs, especially morphine and cocaine, a rumour that reputedly originated with his friendship with Kiki Preston
In his attempt to rescue his cocaine-addicted brother from the influence of Kiki, Edward, Prince of Wales, attempted for a while to persuade both George and Kiki to break off their contact, to no avail. Eventually, Edward forced George to stop seeing Kiki and also forced Kiki to leave England, while she was visiting George there in the summer of 1929. For years afterwards, Edward feared that George might relapse to drugs if he maintained his contact with Kiki. Indeed, in 1932, Prince George ran into Kiki unexpectedly at Cannes and had to be removed almost by force
It has been alleged for years that American publishing executive Michael Temple Canfield (1926–1969) was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Kent and Kiki Preston. According to various sources, both The Duke of Kent’s brother, the Duke of Windsor and Laura, Duchess of Marlborough, Canfield’s second wife, shared this belief.
Canfield was the adopted son of Cass Canfield, an American publisher of Harper and Row. In 1953, Canfield married Caroline Lee Bouvier the younger sister of Jacqueline Bouvier who married U.S. Senator and future U.S. president John F. Kennedy the same year. Canfield and Bouvier divorced in 1958, and the marriage was annulled by the Roman Catholic Church in November 1962
On 25th August 1942, George and 14 others took off in an RAF Short Sunderland flying boat W4026 from Invergordon, Ross and Cromarty, to fly to Iceland on non-operational duties. The aircraft crashed on Eagle’s Rock, a hillside near Dunbeath, Caithness, Scotland. All but one were killed, including George. It marked the first time in 450 years that a royal died during active duty.
There is a false rumour thanks to a book (considered unreliable and farfetched) alleging that Kent had a briefcase full of 100-krona notes, worthless in Iceland, handcuffed to his wrist, leading to speculation the flight was a military mission to Sweden, the only place where krona notes were of value
His elder son, six-year-old Prince Edward, succeeded him as Duke of Kent. Princess Marina, his wife, had given birth to their third child, Prince Michael, only seven weeks before Prince George’s death.
