Rewatched the Howl's Moving Castle movie (fantastic animated movie, definitely inspired by more than an adaptation of the book) while doing something else and I was struck this time by the fact that the Prince (Turniphead the Scarecrow) says that he intends to go tell his king to call off the war, but THEN he intends on COMING BACK to Ingary to shoot his shot with Sophie again because (as he says to the flirtatious Witch of the Wastes) "hearts change".

And maybe he will come back to make Sophie an offer of marriage and then leave again when he's turned down, but I imagined for a moment that the Prince (who is possibly the movie's version of Prince Justin, so let's call him Justin) might just... move back into Howl's house without asking and stay there. There are several cases of precedent for this. Also, as Turniphead, he's shown several times helping Sophie with laundry, or playing with Markl, or helping the Witch of the Wastes move around, and Sophie deserves that kind of help around the house! Howl isn't going to reliably do chores.

And you know what? I think Howl would be into that shit. There's something very Wynne-Jonesian about it all still. It's tempting to write a post-canon fic about this situation from the movie with an extra dash of flavoring from the books. Like:

This is the infamous wizard Howl Pendragon/Jenkins, a vain draft-dodging flirt who likes to build moving castles to evade taxes too. The beautifully angry young woman with the silver hair over there is his wife, Sophie Hatter, who may or may not be an extremely powerful witch, but right now she's dusting and do not get in her way. This is Calcifer, the fire demon who used to have Howl's heart and is arguably his other life partner and also might be in love with Sophie, and this is arguably kind of actually his house. The old lady smoking a cigar over there is Howl's ex-girlfriend and former nemesis, the Witch of the Wastes, who now lives in their house. This is Markl, Howl's apprentice, kind of his kid, and there is no explanation of where he comes from or what happened to his parents. The dog used to be(?) the Royal Wizard's spy (Howl used to be her apprentice and potential successor) but now he also just lives here. And that's Prince Justin of Strangia, Sophie's house-boyfriend. Don't listen to the propaganda, he wasn't kidnapped by a heart-eating wizard; he used to be a cursed scarecrow and now he wants to be here to help Sophie do laundry. He's trying to homewreck and Howl thinks it's both funny and hot.

JATP/HMC AU TELL US

JDJSJD THIS IS MY FIRST ASK ON THIS BLOG SO THANK YOU @davey-in-a-minivan I'M REALLY EXCITED BUT OK HERE WE GO

It's still in the very early development stages, but here's what I have in terms of characters so far:

Julie as Sophie- aka the outsider of the group who learns to speak up for herself and be her own person

Alex as Calcifer- the only one of the group who sometimes has a braincell. This one is the hardest to make a design for, but I'm pulling a lot from the way Calcifer was designed in the HMC musical

Reggie as Michael- the sweetheart of the group. Not always the brightest, but he makes up for it with his heart

Luke as Howl- the only one who was left, and while I'm most likely not gonna do a Juke romance with this au bc I'm uncomfy w Madison and Charlie being so far apart in age (Kenny Ortega please do not make a 16/17 year old kiss a 21/22 year old i will cry), Luke as Howl makes the most sense thematically. Also Howl's plotline of not being able to play the guitar and Luke being the lead guitarist is 😙🤌

Caleb as The Witch of the Waste- This one is pretty self explanatory, y'know, villain and villain, wants to have what The Boys have and will do anything to get it.

Those are my definites, though i do have a few more character ideas in development, as follows

Flynn as either Lettie or Martha: this is where the story would really have to change in terms of HMC and its relationships. I've even considered totally cutting one of Sophie's sisters out just to fit what's happening in my brain, but also ?? I do not want to.

Willie as Miss Angorian: Acting as both the underling of Caleb/The Witch and a sort of connection for Alex. I'd have to drastically change Miss Angorian's plot to fit Willex (aka the only thing I actually ship in jatp), but I do like the concept overall, it's just still a WIP in my brain.

As for Carrie, I've been trying to think of where I want to place her. My first thought was Jane Farrier, but she isn't as prominent of a character as Carrie is. Do i make her the other Hatter sister and totally change the original sister dynamic? Where would that place Bobby? Does Trevor/Bobby even exist in this au???? AAAAA that's pretty much what my brain sounds like right now.

It's the same thing for Ray and Carlos; I love them and their characters in jatp, and i would love to include them but I just don't 100% know how to include them. Does Julie's mom die and then ray marries bobby and that's why carrie is a hatter sister? Do i make ray and Wizard Suliman and Prince Justin? Is Carlos TurnipHead?? Listen, like j said, this is still very much a WIP, but all of those (except for carlos as turniphead that was a joke) have passed through my brain. I also have 0 idea where I would fit Nick in.

I'm currently working on some character sketches just to get an idea, which I'm probably gonna post at some point. And, once I get the rest of this whole thing worked out, I'll make a post detailing everything! But yeah, I'm hyperfixating on both so my brain just sorta. Mushed 'em together

Ha ha ha, the voice actor for Prince Justin in "Howl's Moving Castle" is Crispin Freeman, who was also Uchiha Itachi. I love looking at extremely different roles actors have had over the years; it's consistently amusing.

AI AND SAE HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE AU!!!!

ai has the moving castle but it’s more like a moving shack and it’s full of weird heretic books and odd bits of magitek

sae is a maid but has Latent Witch Powers but is too much of a mess to use it until she Absolutely Must

ai is wanted for tax evasion

they try to go on a date through the magic door but ai fucks up as per usual and they get stranded in a ww1 battlefield and somebody throws a magic bomb at them

turniphead transforms back into banana prince justin but the gorls are so freaked out ai starts crying uncontrollably and sae bashes his head in with a cinderblock

What about Percival? Instead of Turniphead?

In the book version Turnip didn’t have a curse, but was magicked by Suleman before his head and body were parted. So Percival is the one that’s actual under a curse and it’s more like he’s just made up of spare bodyparts and is all confused. Since Howl came from another world to begin with, maybe Howl is “Ringabel” and this world’s Alternis is Prince Justin while Tiz is Suleiman.

And this is exactly why I mentioned I hadn’t read the book in some time, since I knew I would mix some details up between it and the movie orz

I’ll definitely be editing Tiz to be Percival instead! I just need to actually read up on the details again so I can change things to be accurate to the book and still work with what I have!

I might consider making Alternis Prince Justin since I currently don’t have somebody to fill that role, but I’m not certain since I do have some stuff planned out for how Alternis became “Ringabel”. I’ll make final decisions when I have time to re-read the book though!
