His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, offered his condolences on the death of Mohammed Bin Nasser Al Owais, father of the Minister of Health and Community Protection Abdul Rahman Bin Mohammed Al Owais at his residence n Sharjah.
Tariq gasped awake through a cloth gag in his mouth, his first sensations being that his tongue felt like sand and that something damp clogged his breathing. The constant rumble he had felt below him in his semi-consciousness suddenly became acute. As the car hit a bump in the road, his body jerked up and collapsed back down.
Into someone’s chest.
“Ah, our prince is awake.” A voice rumbled into his shoulder from behind.
Tariq groaned and shifted in discomfort, not yet coming to his senses. As he tried to respond through the gag, he could only manage a raspy mmh- before a hand pulled his head back painfully.
“Don’t move too much, prince.” The man crooned as he adjusted the cloth. “Wouldn’t want to disturb that leg anymore.”
At that, Tariq’s eyes snapped down to the rest of his body, widening when he noticed his wrists fused together by a confident knot of rope and that one of his legs hung unnaturally loose over the seat.
His heartbeat picked up. “Mmhm-”
“Shh, sh- sh-”
“Sweet thing panics so easily,” another voice added through an entertained chuckle. It came out almost like a foghorn to Tariq, gravelly and rough and battering against his sore head. “I almost like him better, squirming like this than screaming about his fucking leg.”
With another bang, the wrangler jumped another foot in the air before colliding with the sand, almost throwing Tariq between the seats if the arms behind hadn’t snapped around his waist.
It was then that pain hit him like a thunderbolt.
What started as a pinch in his foot shot up his dangling leg like fire, nearly blinding him.
Tariq tried to scream through the gag but dizziness reached him quicker and his wail came out as a weak moan, another desperate mmh which the man behind him answered with a laugh.
“Don’t cry, little prince.” His hand found Tariq’s eye sockets and a coarse thumb wiped away the tears Tariq hadn’t even realized he had shed. “The painkillers shouldn’t take too long. I fed you a few after you went out on us the first time.
The first time?
“Now, my pretty prince, you may call me Hassan-”
The voice behind dropped into a noticeably dangerous register.
“-and answer my questions before I break your other leg.”
Tariq returned a ragged sob and struggled against the arms holding him but Hassan soothed him with the same sharp shhh from before. It sounded more like the warning of a snake. He shuddered as a hand passed over dried tear tracks on his cheek to rip out the gag, leaving his mouth bone-dry.
“B-Blin’fold,” Tariq managed after a few hacking coughs. “Can’t see.”
Despite the darkness surrounding him, he knew that it must have been night from the silent echo of the wrangler, the cool, dry dustiness of the surrounding desert.
The cool on his face could have almost soothed him if the scream of the engine didn’t overpower it, along with the stench of petrol suffocating what might have been Juniper trees.
He wanted water so badly.
As if his mouth might crack from the dryness, Tariq tried to swallow but all he got from it was an awful, unidentifiable taste.
“I’ll take it off when you’ve earned it,” Hassan hummed before roughly patting his cheek. “State your full name, your position, and where that adorable plane intended to take you before we jacked it.”
Tariq groaned at the flashing memory of the hijacking. “My n-name-... is Adnan-”
Before he could press out his last name, his vision exploded with stars as Hassan rammed his head sideways into the driver’s seat.
Tariq cried out fully that time and slumped back against the man who mockingly shushed him in return.
“Now is not the time for silly rebellion, Mr. Rahman.”
With every sentence, his blood ran colder.
“Your name, in its entirety.”
Was this a game?
“Tariq-.. Tariq Rahman. I’m a diplomat- an ambassador, I meant-”
He cringed at the braying laughter from the passenger’s seat.
“I hope he was planning to speak better than that,” a woman spoke up.
Hassan hummed and nodded - at his answer, Tariq hoped than the mockery. “Excellent, my prince. And your plane?”
“I was f-flying North.”
“Mhm, and what incident were you intending to absolve your country of? Or was it a vacation?”
Tariq’s heart hammered in his throat.
Your country.
“Who-...Who are you?”
A beat of silence from his interrogator and Tariq’s breathing quickened. He felt the air around him change as a hand drew up to his face and suddenly took hold of his chin. Then, his face in a crushing grip.
“Who I am,” Hassan began, almost strained with his tightened grip, “or where I am from is none of your concern, Mr. Rahman. You can delay this questioning with offhand questions and rebel against your circumstances as you wish but a rebellion has been growing under your nose.”
Blood began pounding in his ears.
“In your own country, nonetheless.”
Rebellion? No.
“And you, my little prince, have just absconded from a diplomatic mission in a time of mounting suspicions and pressure.”
He was going to throw up. Tariq shook his head but it felt full of lead. If he had tried to talk, it would have been barely intelligible stammers.
This wasn’t his fault.
He hadn’t engineered this.
Hassan nestled his chin in the crook of Tariq’s neck, stopping the jerking head shakes in their tracks. “How undiplomatic of you. And I won’t even bother touching on your government.”
This wasn’t his fault.
“This is a classic example of stirring the pot. What happens when one nation is disturbed by an unbalanced alliance between two others? They’re trying to prove that we are unreliable, belligerent, and willing to go to war over minority complaints.”
“Mr. Rahman, are you sure there isn’t an internal threat?”
“I prefer to be called Your Excellency.”
Tariq could no longer hear the car’s engine.
“So, Ambassador,” Hassan hissed, still not having let go of his face. Crooking his hand up, he let his fingernails sink into Tariq’s cheek as the man whimpered in fear. “No sweet talk is going to remedy your incompetence here.”
Screwing his eyes shut, Tariq felt the words forming before he could stop himself. “I don’t understand-”
"I’m going to make your life hell, if that clarifies it for you, Tariq. Then, I’ll destroy what little you have left of it.”

And Hetairoi prepared to the battle. [Greek army against the Persian invasion, they fought against each other] After the defeat of Persia, Alex declared himself with the great pride the “King of Asia”.
[In anachronistic news]
[people being proud of his triumph]

[People crowd and scream. Dan and Elisa see Mark Romer locating at the front door of the NYC Apartment, Manhattan]
Dan: Mr. Romer! What are you looking for Izzy?!
Romer: She’ll be right here now.
[a door opened, a deaf queen Isabella steps out, a black rectangle with “CENSORED” on it covering her eyes]
Dan: Thankfully, are you okay, Izzy?
Elisa: No, Dan. Isabella isn’t safe here, but-
Dan: Wait a second! The Spartans and the civilized leaders want her piece. I don’t know where to go!
Romer: What do you say?
Dan: Izzy has to be safe. So the Spartans and civilized leaders want her. We have to go!
[they all run off]
[at 9:49 pm]
[New York City. Vicious Mecha-Hardrada’s right foot is crushing Manny’s Restaurant and everyone runs out. He then destroys Daisy’s drugstore after everyone gets out of there.]
James Lincoln: He’s going to get the Central Park next.
Hatshepsut: Aaaaahhh…, the Glorious Ones.
[The Glorious Ones fly into the city]
Philip: Stop destroying everything, Harald Hardrada! Laser Tonitruum!
[Philip’s laser hurts Harry. But Hardrada looks around to Philip and just laughs more]
Hardrada: Hahahaha…! I can’t take a damage, liars!
Philip: Peter! Try your unique technique!
Peter: Zheleznyye puli!
[Peter shoots into Mecha’s body. But he gets angry after getting shot]
Peter: His anger is too strong!
Afonso: Watch out! Harald Hardrada is using a giant machine gun!
[Hardrada unleashes a giant machine gun. It makes the Glorious Ones avoid its bullets]
[at 9:54 pm][EC Office: Laboratory]
Petrof: Nike, your mother didn’t know where she protected you.
Vicky: Where?
Petrof: It was an incident at the mansion.
[bell goes off]
Petrof: Who’re those?
[quickly opens the door]
Elisa: Professor, this is Isabella of Castile. [Petrof closes the door] We want you to clone her, so we can give her to the Spartans and Harry Hardrada.
Petrof: O, that’s pretty miraculous.
Vicky: What? The clone machine?
Elisa: Vicky, an important deaf queen Isabella has an issue with a civilized humiliation!
Petrova: Nike, those leaders want you to stop the Spartans’ ability.
Move over, Trump. This president’s two lions set off the greatest emoluments debate.
By Erick Trickey, Washington Post, July 21, 2018
Benjamin Franklin sailed home from France in 1785 carrying an awkward goodbye gift from King Louis XVI: an oval-shaped gold box that held a miniature portrait of the king, surrounded by 408 diamonds.
The extravagant box created a dilemma for Franklin. Goodbye presents to diplomats, customary in France, were banned by the United States. Fearful of the corrupting influence of wealthy Europe, the young country had adopted a strict rule: American officials could not accept gifts or second incomes from foreign governments. Careful not to violate the rule, Franklin offered the box to Congress, which let him keep it.
Today, 233 years later, the same rule that bound Franklin threatens to ensnare President Trump. He’s facing three lawsuits alleging that foreign governments’ payments to his businesses are the modern version of Louis XVI’s gold boxes. Last month, a federal judge in Maryland heard arguments on whether the Trump Organization’s business dealings with foreign governments--including diplomats who have stayed at Trump International Hotel in Washington--violate the foreign emoluments clause of the Constitution.
Until Trump’s election, few Americans were familiar with the term “emolument.” But the Founding Fathers saw the foreign emoluments clause as a key defense against other nations corrupting their new government. Part of the Constitution’s Article 1, Section 9, it reads, “No Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under [the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.” The law, which guards against conflicts of interest and potential bribes, was invoked often in early American history.
The ban dates back to America’s first constitution, the Articles of Confederation. (Its inspiration was a 1651 Dutch requirement that foreign ministers reject diplomatic gifts.) The delegates at the 1787 Constitutional Convention included the ban in the new Constitution after Charles Pinckney of South Carolina “urged the necessity of preserving foreign ministers and other officers of the U.S. independent of external influence.”
At Virginia’s 1788 convention to ratify the Constitution, framer Edmund Randolph cited foreign temptations and Franklin’s dilemma as reasons for the clause. “A box was presented to our ambassador by the king of our allies,” Randolph told the delegates. “It was thought proper, in order to exclude corruption and foreign influence, to prohibit any one in office from receiving or holding any emoluments from foreign states.”
Because of the foreign emoluments clause, presidents including Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln turned to Congress for instructions when foreign governments sent them gifts. Congress denied Jackson’s 1830 request to keep a gold medal from Colombian President Simon Bolivar. Lincoln alerted Congress after King Mongkut of Siam sent him a sword, two elephant tusks, and pictures of the king and his daughter. In 1862, Congress ordered Lincoln to deposit the gifts with the Interior Department.
Martin Van Buren, the nation’s eighth president, dealt with the 1800s’ largest, liveliest emoluments-clause dilemma.
In summer 1839, at the American consulate in Tangier, trumpets announced the arrival of a procession of soldiers, sent by Abd ar-Rahman, the sultan of Morocco. The soldiers came bearing gifts: an “enormous, magnificent” lion and lioness.
The harried American consul, Thomas N. Carr, tried to refuse the lions, protesting that he--and the president--were barred by law from accepting them. The sultan’s emissary did not take no for an answer. “It will cost my head if I disobey,” the emissary said, according to Carr’s beleaguered letter to the secretary of state. “I shall leave them in the street.” Stuck, Carr put the lions up in a room in the consulate and wrote home, saying he would “anxiously await instructions.”
While the lions paced in the consulate, in spring 1840, the ship Sultanee sailed into New York City, bearing presents for Van Buren from Seyyid Said, the Sultan of Oman: two Arabian horses, a Persian rug, some cashmere shawls, pearls and a sword. Apologetically, Van Buren wrote to the sultan (also known as the Imam of Muscat) that “a fundamental law of the Republic … forbids its servants from accepting presents from foreign States or princes.” The ship’s captain insisted that the gifts should go to the U.S. government instead.
“I deem it my duty to lay the proposition before Congress,” Van Buren wrote to the Senate, “for such disposition as they may think fit to make of it.”
John Quincy Adams, the former president turned congressman, protested that Congress should refuse to consent to the gifts. “The president should receive no presents from any foreign power,” Adams argued on the House floor in June 1840. Despite Adams’ opposition, Congress authorized Van Buren to accept and sell the gifts from both sultans. The lions, shipped from Morocco to Pennsylvania, were auctioned off in Philadelphia’s Navy Yard in August 1840 for $375. The pearls, which weren’t sold, are in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
Today, federal law prohibits U.S. government employees, including the president, from accepting gifts worth more than $390 from foreign officials. Justice Department opinions warn that the foreign emoluments clause prohibits most federal employees from earning second incomes from foreign governments.
Before President Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, he got clearance from Justice Department lawyers who concluded that it wouldn’t violate the emoluments clause. (The Norwegian parliament appoints the nonprofit Nobel Committee, but Justice lawyers found that Norway’s government has “no meaningful role” in funding the prize or choosing its recipients. Obama gave the prize’s $1.4 million award to charity.)
Can federal officials, including the president, do business with foreign governments? Three lawsuits against Trump argue that the emoluments clause prohibits that, too. A case filed by Maryland and the District of Columbia has proceeded the farthest so far. Lawyers in the case debated 18th-century dictionary definitions of “emolument” in court in Greenbelt in June. Trump’s lawyers argued for definitions that refer to profit from employment, while Maryland and D.C.’s lawyers argued that the more prevalent definition in the late 1700s included any profit or advantage. The judge has said he’ll rule this month on whether the case can proceed.
In court, Trump’s lawyers also brought up a 225-year-old land deal struck by George Washington. In 1793, while Washington was president, he bought four plots of land in the District of Columbia from the federal government, in a land sale conducted by the D.C. commissioners, his appointees. “I had no desire … to stand on a different footing from every other purchaser,” Washington wrote to them.
Trump’s lawyers argued that Washington’s land deal is relevant to understanding the constitutional definition of an emolument. There’s also a domestic emoluments clause in the Constitution, which says that the president can’t receive “any other emolument” besides his salary from the U.S. or state governments. No one in 1793 treated Washington’s land deal as an emolument, Trump’s lawyers argue. So, they say, rent from a Chinese state-owned bank at Trump Tower isn’t an emolument either, nor are foreign diplomats’ bookings at the Trump International Hotel. (Still, just in case, the Trump Organization donated $151,000 to the U.S. Treasury in March, for unidentified “profits from foreign government patronage at our hotels and similar business” in 2017.)
But Washington’s example can go both ways. The first president often used the term “private emolument” in his letters, to mean personal profit. In April 1776, as the American commander in the Revolutionary War, Washington issued a proclamation warning that colonial merchants who furnished British warships with “supplies of provision” would be treated as enemies. In doing so, Washington evoked the same fears of divided loyalties and private gain that would soon give rise to the Constitution’s emoluments ban. “Sundry base and wicked persons,” Washington called the merchants, “preferring their own, present private emolument to their country’s weal.”

We take a look at 7 famous films based on the lives of actors that gained a cult following over the years…
Mahanati (2018)
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Mahanati is a film based on the life of actress Savitri, said to be the first female superstar of the Indian film industry. Keerthy Suresh brought to life the title character, Dulquer Salmaan, who made his Telugu debut with the film played Gemini Ganesan, Samantha Akkineni essayed the character of Madhuravani (BA Gold Medal), a journalist who is the narrator of sorts for the film, Bhanupriya, Vijay Devarakonda played Vijay Antony. The who’s who of the South industry were part of this prestigious project. Some of the cameos included that of Akkineni Naga Chaitanya who played his grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Mohan Babu played S. V. Ranga Rao, Prakash Raj played Aluri Chakrapani, Krish was K. V. Reddy, Srinivas Avasarala was L. V. Prasad, Sandeep Vanga was seen as Adurthi Subba Rao, Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam was Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and Sai Madhav Burra played Pingali Nagendra Rao. N. T. Rama Rao was brought to life using special effects and a body double. The film opened to rave reviews. Talking about her role in an interview, Keerthy reportedly said that it was a life lesson to play the role of a real-life character like that of legendary actress Savitri. She said after playing Savitri, she understood the importance of relations and friendships and added she would never make the mistakes Savitri made with her life and career.
The Dirty Picture (2011)
Directed by Milan Luthria, the film was reportedly based on the life of sex symbol Silk Smitha belonging to the South industry, who was known for her raunchy numbers. The film depicted her life from that of being an extra in the film to that of being one of the most sought after and popular actresses around. Vidya Balan was unconventionally cast against type as the central character and to the surprise of everyone wowed both the masses and the critics alike. The film opened to packed houses and Vidya also won the Filmfare Award for her powerhouse performance. Speaking about her role during the promotions of the film, Vidya had this to say, “I have never enjoyed being a woman more than I did while shooting for The Dirty Picture. I wasn’t uncomfortable doing bold scenes because I knew I was in trusted hands.”
My Week with Marilyn (2011)
My Week with Marilyn is a 2011 British drama film directed by Simon Curtis and written by Adrian Hodges. It stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Emma Watson and Judi Dench. Based on two books by Colin Clark, it depicts the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. The film focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around London by Clark (Eddie Redmayne), after her husband, Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), had left the country. The film is based on Colin Clark’s The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn; two diary accounts, which document his time on the set of the 1957 film. Monroe and Olivier, who is considered the most gifted Shakespearean actor of all time, didn’t reportedly get along during the shooting of the film in 1956. At that point of time, Monroe found a sympathetic ear in form of British writer and filmmaker Colin Clark. Kenneth Branagh played Olivier in the film. Celebrated actress Michelle Williams was lauded by the critics for her true to life depiction of Monroe and won an Oscar nomination for it. In an interview given at the time, she mentioned she was kind of apprehensive of the whole thing and spent around six months trying to talk herself out of it. “But, in the end, there was a kind of inevitability. It was the kind of part I was born to challenge myself with…”
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is a 2004 British/American film about the life of English comedy actor Peter Sellers, based on Roger Lewis’s book of the same name. It was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred Geoffrey Rush as Sellers, Miriam Margolyes as his mother Peg Sellers, Emily Watson as his first wife Anne Howe, Charlize Theron as his second wife Britt Ekland, John Lithgow as Blake Edwards, Stephen Fry as Maurice Woodruff and Stanley Tucci as Stanley Kubrick. Though the film met with positive reviews, both Britt Ekland, Sellers’ second wife and Lord Snowdon, a close friend criticised it for different reasons, though both agreed that the Sellers they saw on screen wasn’t the Sellers they knew in real life. Film critics were more generous in their praise and Rush won the Emmy for his performance. Geoffrey Rush reportedly tried on 38 wigs and 40 voices to get his impression of the dark genius right. Parallels with his own life were drawn at the time but Rush refuted them saying his own life wasn’t as dark and troubled as Sellers’. It was a tough challenge for Rush to be Sellers as the script by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had Sellers inhabiting the various characters who shape his life. It must have been tough both physically and mentally but Fry somehow overcame the difficulties and gave a wonderful performance. “Some people find the idea of the Sellers character playing various people in the film weird or disconcerting,” Rush said in an interview. “I always found it terrific.”
Iruvar (1997)
The film was loosely based on the life and times of MGR and Karunanidhi, though Mani Ratnam never officially commented on that. MGR was brought to life by Mohanlal in one of his most sublime performances while Prakash Raj gave his career’s best performance as the poet-politician Tamizhselvan and won a National Award for the same. Aishwarya Rai made her big screen debut through this film and played the dual role of Jayalalitha and Mohanlal’s wife. Talking about the role in an interview with a daily, Mohanlal commented Iruvar offered him an entire lifespan of a character. He liked the role as it had a lot of variations. Prakash Raj, who was trying to make a mark outside of Kannada films, too said Iruvar helped him take the next big step in his career. The film is described by some to be the finest film directed by Mani Ratnam.
Chaplin (1992)
Chaplin is a 1992 British-American biographical comedy-drama film about the life of British comedian Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller, and Kevin Kline. It also features Geraldine Chaplin in the role of her own paternal grandmother, Hannah Chaplin. The film was adapted by William Boyd, Bryan Forbes and William Goldman from the books My Autobiography by Chaplin and Chaplin: His Life and Art by film critic David Robinson. It was a role of a lifetime at the time for Downey, who is known today as Iron Man. He was a no-name actor with allegedly no professional training who reportedly aced the screen test in a field consisting of 30 known actors. Director Richard Attenborough described him thus at the time – “This little Brat Pack gadfly with virtually no discipline.” The film opened to mostly positive reviews and Downey was praised for his sensitive portrayal of the troubled genius that was Chaplin. He was nominated for the Oscars but like Chaplin himself, who never won an acting honour at the Academy Awards, he too didn’t win. But he did win the BAFTA in the Best Actor category.
Bhumika (1977)
Bhumika is a 1977 film directed by Shyam Benegal. The film stars Smita Patil, Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri. The film is based on the memoir, Sangte Aika of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress of the ’40s Hansa Wadkar, who led a flamboyant and unconventional life. The film won two National Film Awards — Smita Patil won the National Award for her power packed performance and it also won the Best Screenplay Award. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award as well. It was invited to Carthage Film Festival 1978, as also to the Chicago Film Festival, where it was awarded the Golden Plaque in 1978. The story moves back and forth across flashbacks to the early life of Wadkar. Apart from the non-linear narrative, the film also employed the film within a film device. The film was lauded by the critics and Smita Patil’s performance continues to get praised. Some say it’s her career best performance. In an interview with Filmfare, this is what Shyam Benegal said about Smita’s role in Bhumika. “Initially, I had considered Shabana for Bhumika (1977) too but Smita’s body language and dialect seemed culturally apt for her Maharashtrian character. Bhumika, based on the life of Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar, required Smita’s visual presence from the beginning to the end…”
