I think one of the many elements that makes Bowser's army so much more of a threat in the movie vs the games is that everyone physically capable of carrying a weapon is actually armed.
Every one of these guys is willing, able, and equipped to stab (or bludgeon if that's their area of expertise.)
#It's bonkers but this is definitely the first time I've seen a Bowser's Army so full of actual weapons#Bonus points that the storyboarders and animators did not forget how heavily armed they established everyone to be#You can see Mario having to dodge a bunch of thrown spears when he's crashing the wedding#They didn't even use ''the koopas were taken by surprise'' as an excuse to make them unarmed and easy to defeat#It's a world conquering army of COURSE they had all their weapons on standby#love love love when something lighthearted in nature sticks to their guns about how big of a threat something is#Hope with all my heart this carries over into the sequel when Mario and Luigi won't have the super star to solve all their problems#I'm intrigued to know what strategy they pull off to win the day the second time around#because the odds they're up against are legit bonkers#The Super Mario Bros Movie#Mario Analysis

Trying to crack Dominion strategy with augments feels a bit like trying to out-wrestle a Vulcan.
Fantastic idea to have your five (5) augments working on this problem! Now let’s just check if the Dominion has dabbled in any gene engineering and… oh. Oh no.
#star trek shitposting#every time a founder so much as stubs their toe#they create an entirely new civilization of miserable gene engineered strategists#who can never feel joy and subsist on the pure light of statistics#this is their Only problem-solving method#you will not beat them at this game#anyway something something Take Me Out To The Holosuite as a metaphor for how you beat the Dominion#not with ships and strategy but by doing something completely different#make them question why they even started this fight in the first place#star trek#ds9#ds9 statistical probabilities#jack pack#augments#the founders#the dominion#vorta#jem’hadar

it is kind of hilarious to me that Mt. Lady's last ditch effort when the trigger bomb was seconds away from detonating was apparently going to be 'pick it up and throw it'

"you can homebrew anything into 5e, its really genre-neutral" <- guy who assumes the health system used in d&d is the "default" and hasnt thought about the fact that healing up to full in 8 hours is a) buck fucking wild, and b) absolutely crucial to the power fantasy and foolhardy adventuring atmosphere that d&d is centered on. d&d wants you to rush into challenges, give it everything, barely survive, and then do it again the next day. fights in d&d default to not having long-lasting consequences (unless the dm gives them higher stakes on purpose as a conscious decision). thats fun for an adventuring game. do not do this in survival games
this is just one of the many, many mechanics in this game that give a certain vibe that tons of people love. changing this one thing wont change the genre entirely, but you have to change it if youre really that dedicated to reinventing the wheel in d&d. i am not nitpicking. this is huge. if you dont see why its such a big deal, i dont trust that you understand game design well enough to make a genre-hopping d&d homebrew
#can you IMAGINE what it would do to vt//m if not only were you healed up to full every night BUT ALSO it didnt cost you any resources BUT#ALSO you got all of the resources you expended last night back like how d//&d does with spell slots (and other class equivalents)???#the cost and speed of healing puts you in really tight spots and forces you to rethink your problem solving strategies#healing being a risk is crucial for the politicking and social aspects to matter as much as they do#and also maintains a tension that horror games require. the conses will quence even if you DO win the fight#(not even getting into how it may fuck with your humanity and reputation and the masquerade and and and-)

the maga infighting on display is not a sign of the collapse of the gop or something.
it's just how maga works.
maga chews through their own people on an impressive basis, and yet it keeps on going. same feces new faces.
i wish the media wouldn't act like there's no other news
#i do find humor in these maga maury povitch scenes sometimes but they don't solve my problems 🤷♂️#these fights are inherently a public peformance (how else would you prove yourself and humiliate your opponent)#but they reveal nothing we didn't already know; they change nothing#also they complement the overall strategy of flooding us with just too many things to keep track of#so we don't notice all that's happening and can't focus our energy on what's important.#trump vs elon#elon vs stephen miller#living in the u.s.a.#this dystopian nightmare of a country#u.s. politics#u.s. news media#trump administration#2025#fuck elon musk#fuck trump#fuck stephen miller#fuck maga#let me know when they start assassinating each other or something

A background detail in the books that facinates me is that the Foxes were on the verge of being dismantled. And by detail I mean that it's a fact so widely known that we hear about it from chapter 1, just as passive knowledge Neil has before even dreaming of playing with them.
It ends up staying fairly background because Neil has... Bigger worries, but it is very much present for the whole series. There are plenty of descriptions of how Palmetto thought the Foxes would breathe life into the town; How Wymack lives practically alone in one of the apartment complexes built out of the expectation.
For four years, the Foxes placed dead last, and if they do it again, they ARE getting demoted from Class I. Of the original team, there was only Seth left. And if you do the math, that means that people were leaving up until the semester before TFC begins, because there are nine players including Kevin, who was an assistant coach, and Neil is replacing another recruit. Seth's death brings them down to nine again, and the ERC's response to that is to start a discussion on whether the minimum number of players should go up to 12. If it weren't for the intervetion of Coach Rhemann, they would have gotten disqualified anyway when Andrew went to Easthaven. PSU was against signing the girls, and both the university and the ERC fought back against making Dan captain.
They are not only fighting for their lives out here, they are straight up losing.
That puts a lot of things into perspective, I think. For one, I think it really explains a lot about Kevin's relationship to the Foxes. Like, imagine knowing your second – your last – chance at a life is under threat, and out of nowhere, the best player in your league offers to help you. And then he does it by saying all the effort you've made up until now was useless, that all your fighting wasn't enough. I'd resent him too.
It also says very interesting things both about who Wymack is as a person and exactly how big of a deal he must have been as a player, that he keeps facing these incredible odds and getting just one more chance. And even when he knows he's running out of strings to pull, he keeps on, because "one more chance" is what his team is supposed to be about anyway.
And then they turn around and not only break their own records by making past the first rounds, they go all the way up and dethrone the undefeated champion of their league for first place. It's no wonder not even they believed they could do it.
#AND THAT'S WORLDBUILDING BABYYYYY#you really do not get more underdog than this#started from the bottom now we're here. literally. fueled PURELY by spite and a 5'2 mafia refugee#but I find it supremely funny that the stakes of the season were already insane BEFORE Neil pissed off the mafia#his strategy is truly solving their problems by creating different bigger problems#all for the game#aftg

More applied Fork Theory:
Problem: POTS means I need increased hydration and electrolytes. A history of kidney stones means that standard electrolyte mixes don't do it for me. Also, they're often stupidly expensive. The kidney stone thing means that drinking lemon juice is advisable. Preserving my teeth means that I need it substantially diluted. Allergies/mast cell issues mean that ReaLemon and most commercially available standard lemon juice concentrates are out due to sulfites. And steroid-induced-but-now-type-2 diabetes means sugar is out, but most sweeteners cause problems for me. I do not have the energy to squeeze lemons.
Solution: Homemade lemonade thusly:
Ingredients:
Pure lemon juice. I don't have the stamina for squeezing but in my area I can buy Lakewood Organics or Santa Cruz pure lemon juice, no additives, not concentrated, in quart bottles.
Potassium Chloride: I get NOW brand potassium chloride but really any food grade potassium chloride in bulk will do. One small jar lasts me a while, at least 6 months to a year? Maybe longer? I haven't mathed it.
Sodium Chloride: i.e. salt. While I am on a lower sodium diet than I used to be due to kidney stones (high sodium pulls calcium into the urine, where it can combine with oxalates. The combination of an almond-forward keto diet for diabetes plus high sodium for POTS is a recipe for kidney stones. Nevertheless, I feel Bad if I don't get at least some salt with my liquids.)
Sweetener: By far the easiest for me is pure stevia extract powder. Either the Better Stevia brand or the tiny canister from Trader Joes which is probably the same thing. They function identically. This is ideal because it does not add significant bulk to the liquid. Pure monk fruit or alluose are the only other sweeteners I'd personally use. But if you make this, choose a sweetener that works for you, even sugar if you tolerate it well.
If NOT otherwise supplementing vitamin C and avoiding oranges, Magnesium Ascorbate
Tools: Measuring spoons and a cheap milk frother. (Idk if the one I have is that one, but that's the general concept). Mason jars or other quart containers for mixing individual drinks.
Now when I started out, I was making one lemonade at a time.
In a quart jar: 1 oz lemon or lime juice (I keep a 1 oz shotglass just for this) 1/4 teaspoon of stevia extract powder 1/8 teaspoon of potassium chloride and/or other electrolytes as appropriate to your medical situation. 1/8 tsp potassium chloride is about 360 mg of potassium.
Fill the jar with filtered water. Stir. Drink.
It dawned on me after a while that I could make up a bunch of concentrate and then pour a 1 oz shot glass into the jar and add water and it would be much easier. So:
In the quart jar of pure juice, add the following, shaking* between every tablespoon addition.
3 tablespoons of stevia concentrate powder (this rounds the sweetener up slightly) 1 tablespoon potassium chloride powder will add about 270 mg of potassium per serving. (This rounds the potassium down slightly from the single serve recipe.) If desired, 1 tablespoon of magnesium oxide will add approximately 250 mg of magnesium per serving. I take my magnesium in a different way. If you need additional vitamin C to get to your baseline of 60 mg per day of vitamin c, adding 1/4 teaspoon of magnesium ascorbate will add about 25 mg of vitamin C per serving and a trivial amount of magnesium.
I use about 2 1/2 teaspoons of Potassium and 1/2 teaspoon of sodium for my mix. Adjust to your medical situation. Just remember that you are using 32 servings, some math will be required.
You MUST shake after each tablespoon or it won’t mix well*. Recap the jar very tightly.
Once this is mixed, it is best to let it sit in the fridge for a few hours to hydrate any remaining chunks and then shake well before using.
Add 1 shot (1 oz) of mixed concentrate to a quart jar and fill the jar with filtered water to make one serving of lemonade.
Then my niece gave me the milk frother for Christmas. And so instead of stirring after each addition, I put the powders in a small jelly jar, added a small amount of lemon juice to it, used the drink twizzler to whip the powders into the lemon juice into a paste, added a little more lemon juice and did it again, and then carefully poured the result back into the lemon juice jar, going back and forth until I got it all. It was kind of frothy at first, but sitting in the fridge for an hour let the foam all settle out and the mix was perfect.
Or just go here:

"Psychologists define values as the purpose or attitude we take regarding our chosen actions. A value is not a goal or destination but rather a compass that guides our journey toward a more meaningful, purpose-driven life. Values reflect the ways we most want to show up in the world. In comparison to emotions, which come and go and sometimes mistakenly lead us into thinking there is danger, values provide a steady hand that reminds us about the kind of person we want to be. In comparison to logic, values do not require us to solve anything. They require only that we choose, with clear-eyed intention, how we take our life’s journey.
We can always choose to put our values in the driver’s seat, even when we find ourselves on a path we didn’t choose, don’t much like, or that is truly unjust. We can put our values in the driver’s seat even while experiencing the searing pain of guilt, shame, sadness, or anger."
- Yael Schonbrun, from "How to Make a Decision When There Are No Good Choices." Tricycle, 6 March 2023.

It's always interesting to me when someone shares that their dog is too smart and figures out puzzle toys too quickly. I don't buy Sophie puzzle toys anymore because she specifically realized that Beat The Shit Out Of It™ is an effective strategy for most of them and totally stopped trying to figure out the intended solution, so putting some treats into a wobbly treat ball takes the same amount of brainpower for her and actually takes her longer. Unfortunately, she's literally never found a problem that couldn't be solved with the violence she so clearly craves, and as such, alternative solutions don't occur to her.
#personal: sophie#dogs#beat it up until it makes with the water is also the strategy she employs with the gravity waterer when it's empty#the sound from which alerts a person that its empty which in turn fixes her problem because we refill it#she always looks really proud of herself when she's solving her problems with violence#i have seen evidence from other corgi-havers that this is on brand for the breed

actually sick to my stomach i love half life so much
#hl1 gameplay vs hl2 gameplay is maybe my favorite piece of storytelling in half life and its so unintentional#and is clearly just me digging too deep but i love it anyways#hl1 gameplay is so unforgiving and cruel because the game wants you to know you're some scientist with almost zero gun training#going against armed soldiers and it does not want you to forget#you have to play hl1 so differently compared to hl2 or even just a lot of fps games at the time#its a game about strategy and problem solving first and foremost#by hl2 gordon has reached the status of an old legend#a story resistance members tell in order to inspire hope and change#hl2 is so kind and forgiving combat wise compared to hl1#and i can't help but wonder if its because the narrative has shifted around gordon so much#hes not just 'some theoretical physicist' now hes humanitys savior and final hope#sorry. what was i saying. oh yeah half life is a good series and hl2 is gonna be 20 this year.#half life

Guys, if leftists are so miniscule that their voices aren't worth hearing during elections, then you can't blame them for every election loss.
#Sometimes you just lose.#Sometimes your strategy was bad.#You should probably put the blame with Republican ratfucking and gerrymandering.#But that's a harder problem to solve.#And a faceless group is easier to blame in a difficult political moment.

a bunch of people have already registered for my mentoring workshop! unfortunately this means i have to plan and host a workshop aaaaaa
#i want to think aloud through it on here at some point#but i think i am going to structure it around the theme of cultivating student autonomy#because i think one of the primary goals of mentorship is to prepare students to be self-directed learners who can set realistic goals +#evaluate their own progress + reflect on what they've learned and what they still don't know#+ take initiative without sitting around waiting for someone to tell them what to do next#so i think we will do some thinking around like#when we have a student we think of as really capable or driven what qualities and behaviors do we observe in that student#and maybe ill also share some of the research on intrinsic motivation + self-direction + locus of control#which i think is all really interesting esp in light of the contemporary College Mental Health Crisis concerns#and then we will look at a range of tools + structures + strategies that i think are useful for fostering student autonomy over time#and maybe leave them with some core principles/guiding values that i think are useful when you are trying to like#avoid jumping in and doing stuff for kids#or solving their problems for them#idk i need to think through specifics a bit more#but i feel like on this campus#people do a lot of 'workshops' that are really not interactive at all#it's just someone talking from slides#and i kind of want to show off my ability to structure more engaging workshops#but idk. gotta think about how to do it well#and how to build in lots of opportunities for like crowdsourcing strategies too
