My favorite thing though is that how throughout the book the thinderhead is trying to create sirus but just keeps failing until it inhabits jerris body, really brought it around full circle ( thunderhead might lowk be my favorite character (maybe second to volta rip) because of how it is portrayed and its emotions, but the limits it has to the emotions because a lack of physical form for its moral reasons)

and i like to think that if ai did take over it would be like the thunderhead, physically inable to disobey its core programming and therefore wanting whats best for humanity and trying to prevent its downfall, like how it handled endura and the atolls

The new trailer for Ted Lasso season 3 and all the speculation that goes with it about who may or may not end up coming out (or just being queer) has me going kind of crazy. I’ve been on this hell-site for so many years on and off, I’ve seen all the queer baiting, all the desperate hoping and tricking yourself into the belief that this little thing might be a sign. I hyper-fixate on shows, especially on the queer-coded characters, and I long for good queer representation. I’ve been through all of this longing and hoping before, and I’m just getting so sick of it.

Whenever I talk to a het person about Ted Lasso and its lack of any queer characters, they either say “there’s not any yet, there’s another season still to come,” or “one of them might be gay, you don’t know.” Neither of these things are good enough. Neither sentiment makes me think “Yeah, that’ll probably be good enough.” For one thing, we’re two seasons in. If you’re two seasons into a show that is clearly conscious of some forms of diversity, but can’t manage to acknowledge the existence of queerness beyond a slur that was used in the first two minutes, and the occasional joke (usually used to make a female character seem more sexy/intriguing), then can there really be much hope for real, honest queer representation and storytelling in the third and final season?

Will they really get round to the very important question of how homophobia fits into the the toxic masculinity locker room culture that Ted first walked into, and how that affected and continues to affect the mental health of those within it? Will they really tell this (or any) story from the point of view of a queer person, and with the care and nuance it deserves? They’ve had poc characters from the start, but even their storytelling of these characters has been controversial and from many people’s perspectives, problematic. 

I know the history of queer television, I know why queer coding became a powerful way of telling only the people in the know “hey, I see you”. But we’ve moved beyond that, and in a TV show like Ted Lasso, where it so clearly aims to  tell a diverse range of stories, from an accepting and curious point of view, the lack of actual, truely represented, honest queerness is jarring. I’m sick of being presented with crumbs, with jokes that anyone who’s not queer wouldn’t even notice, and being treated like it’s a gift.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Ted Lasso, I love all my Richmond himbos and my darling Keeley. I’ll watch season 3 and I’ll obsess. I’ll keep all my little headcanons. But I just can’t stand all this trying to trick myself into believing we’ll actually get a queer storyline, especially not for a main character. I’ve been there before and it hurts. We deserve better. So I’m including a little list, for the darlings who have actually read this whole post, of my current fav shows with actual queer characters and stories, so that while we deal with all this Ted Lasso anxiety, we can also have some comfort LGBTQIA+ tv too. Please add your favourites too.

Brassic:

I have to put this first even though it’s not necessarily the gayest, because I think anyone and everyone who watches Ted Lasso should watch Brassic. Joe Gilgun co-created the show and stars as the main character Vinnie, and while his diagnosis has changed since the show’s beginning (he’s now discovered he has bpd, not bipolar) the show’s depiction of Vinnie as man living with bipolar disorder is phenomenal. As is the way it introduces and tells the stories of its queer characters; most notably Ash, a gay man from a traditional Irish traveller family, who has my heart (but actually there are very few main characters who I'm convinced are really, totally straight). 

There's a moment in the show when Vinnie encounters some ‘casual’ homophobia, and even though he’s not with anyone queer, even though he doesn’t know the person who said it, and he’s got shit he really has to get on with, he has to call it out. It’s a little moment, in a show with a lot more very gay scenes and storylines, but it’s the kind of thing that just feels so important. Brassic is chaotic and crude and probably too much for a lot of people, but it’s loving too. 

9-1-1: Lone Star:

This one might not be the same high quality television as the others; it’s a first responder drama that tends towards the soapy, but god, I love it. I love the way they write their queer characters, I love the way they write the friendships between them, and the ways that most of the characters are some kind of minority and use their shared experiences of being marginalised and discriminated against to support and be there for each other. 

It's also worth noting that Brian Michael Smith, who plays Paul, a trans man, is the first black trans man to be a series regular on American tv, and that queer actors Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva, who play lovers on the show, were recently on the cover of Out magazine, and are both activists in the queer community. 

Sense8:

It’s so wonderfully, beautifully queer. It’s a scifi, made by the Wachowski sisters, that’s a kind of love letter to the LGBT+ community. I don't think any of the main characters are meant to be straight, it’s all so very, very queer. Please do watch it, just, not with your mum you know.

Our Flag Means Death:

Gay pirates. Non-binary pirates. New Zealand accents on characters that are definitely not meant to be from New Zealand. What more could you want?

Vico Ortiz, who is non-binary, apparently cried when they read the script because the writers (three of whom are also non-binary) had taken such care to create space for the non-binary character, Jim. You can honestly feel that care when watching the show.

The Last of Us:

I’m sorry. I’m not a gamer and don’t know anything about the game, but every time I yell at my gamer friend who made me watch the show for making me watch it, they just laugh knowingly and say it's only getting worse. So I’m sorry, but yeah, you should still watch it.

Last tv show I watched: I just finished rewatching The Umbrella Academy season 1 to get myself psyched for season 2. I also just finished watching the netflix mini series documentary ‘Unabomber: In his own words’ which was pretty good. And I am also currently binging The Office (US) and am just starting season 8. 

Fav original character: So i am writing (admittedly mostly just in my head although a little less then a quarter has been written as a rough draft on a word doc) a rather length fantasy/vampire novel. Its part romance, part drama, part revenge fantasy, part anarchist vigilante revolution au and tbh part me just self projecting my trauma and dysfunctional life onto my characters... And whilst it likely will never see the light of day because of my lack of motivation to write the entire thing down and instead just reference it when i am day dreaming. I really vibe with the alternative universe as an escape from the real one i am living in and i have a vested interest in the characters i have created in it. And whilst there are numerous ocs from this that i have put an alarmingly long amount of time (literally years) into developing all of which i love and adore i do have two favourites. One named Taylor who is a gay 2946 year old idiot/himbo (vampire obviously). He is hot, sweet, kind, caring, funny, understanding, stubborn, the mum™️  friend, a romantic fool with a a hint of mummy issues and anger problems and a complete fucking allergy to guilt. And the other is his prodigy/person he turned vampire named Meredith. She is 354 year old hot mess and is kinda the opposite of him in that she is homicidal, manipulative, cunning, devious, fearless (almost to a fault), strong willed women. Who is very smart, has a strong/forward and somewhat off putting personality, low key a bit of a bitch but is very protective of those she loves and has good morals and the desire to right all wrongs even if through violent revenge if she sees fit. She is the leader of a criminal underworld revolution seeking to bring revenge and justice to the powerful and untouchable evils of the world. And he is her loyal side kick that lets her run the show as she is a natural born leader, but also works as a the voice of reason and logic to her. All the while having his own sub plot of being torn between chasing his love interest despite the danger it possesses. Or sacrificing his own desire for connection and love for fear of the consequences despite it meaning living a sad and eternally lonely life. Thats just a very brief summery of those two. They have a very close but complicated relationship with each other, like annoying siblings but imagine if you had to live with your siblings for centuries. And they all have there flaws (some more obvious then others) as well as dark, morbid and tragic histories but it makes them what the are today both the good, the bad and the downright problematic. And yeah i’d like to think one day i will write this out properly and others will read it and connect to or relate to these characters. Maybe love them, maybe hate them, maybe initially hate them, like is designed with Meredith, but come to truly love her once they begin to understand her and see her potential thats hidden under layers of ‘don’t fuck with me’. But until then they are my characters to play around with and build upon and thats exactly what i intend to do.

Plus I kind of have an aesthetic fondness for couples that are a dark brunette haired man with a red haired woman. other ship(s): Ariel and Sora have a really sweet friendship in Kingdom Hearts and a similar optimism and desire to explore. Honestly, if they were going to ship Sora with a woman, Ariel was easily a better option than Kairi. Just sayin’. #noromo ship(s): Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle of course crack ship(s): Ariel/Moana is really cute for strong willed ocean princesses, and Ariel/Milo Thatch is really cute and underrated since they both anthropologists and explorers at heart.  fav headcanon(s): Ariel has always had a soft spot for misfits and the weirdos of the world since she’s always felt that way for her feelings towards the human world. She had to learn very early on to stand her ground about who she is and to shut off the voices of people around her speaking ill of her and her interests. So she just gravitates towards making friends with other people and creatures who don’t feel like they fit in and helping them to know that they’re loved and valid for who they are.

Top 5 Rachel Weisz movies (if I am not mistaken and you like her too)

I do like love Rachel Weisz, but I actually haven’t seen very many of her films.  

I wasn’t excited about her work in the years after the Mummy. My vague understanding of her career in the aughts was that RW seemed to get typecast as a brilliant, dead wife. Upon doing more research I’m realizing this might have just been The Fountain and The Constant Gardener, but it was enough to turn off younger me. I was a teen and I remember being mad that she was only allowed to play a strong, vivacious woman if the character was ultimately punished with death/violence. 

Now, looking at her list of work, I’m realizing that I really want to see My Cousin Rachel, and I might actually skim Black Widow later this year. I do want to watch the Lobster... but, I really don’t like that dude that’s in it with her. 

From the films I have seen, I’ve chosen four! 

1. The Mummy 

I feel like putting this at #1 is kind of passé but this movie was so formative to me as a kid. I loved seeing a woman going on an adventure, as having a sense of humor, as being an all-out, unabashed nerd. The Mummy overall is a problematic fav because of the heavy white-washing of Egyptian history/centering of colonizers/overall orientalism. 

But, I still can’t help but adore so much of the film. The swashbuckling ridiculousness, baby bae Oded Fehr, hottie Patricia Velazquez, the perfect melodramatic villain delivery of Arnold Vosloo, the amazing comedic chemistry between John Hannah and Rachel, the overall fun and funny adventure with horror elements. 

And of course, the incredible chemistry between Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraiser. Just wow. *chefs kisses* I’ve always known I was bi and I’m not sure why my parents let me watch this R rated movie as an eight-year-old (srsly those damn bugs gave me nightmares for weeks) but wow did I have such a crush on both of them in this movie. I never knew I could ship straight people that hard, and I will expand on how I want to be a third person in their fictional marriage in our next section~

2. The Mummy Returns

My girlfriend just yelled at me across the room that shouldn’t count Evy twice on my list, but it’s literally another movie, okay? And in this second installment, our girl is still an all-out nerd, library master who is now also an adventuring, treasure-seeking gun-fighting explorer who lives in a bomb mansion in London with her gorg himbo husband? And she’s got that old boys club the Bembridge scholars calling and asking for her help? I’m just like yes, queen. Get it. 

Again, ditto on the further white-washing of Egyptian history and harmful Hollywood tropes. 

But, also, the love she has with Rick and for their kid makes my heart swell. I’m so glad we’re a second movie in and Evy and Rick are still so sexy and so goofily in love. Definitely a top five otp of my life. We can ignore the rest of the franchise. 

Also, can you believe The Mummy Returns was Dwayne Johnson’s cinematic debut? I’m cackling.  

3. Disobedience

When I first heard about this movie, I was like “Rachel Adams?” and I scrunched my nose a little bit and thought, “This movie is going to be bad.” Bad because I think up until then I had id-ed Rachel Weisz as straight and was mad at this whole straight people playing queer characters phenomenon for some sort of acting clout~ 

After this movie and The Favourite, I very much claim Rachel in queer girl cannon. 

This movie is very specifically about a Jewish Orthodox community and while those are not my cultural identities, this movie felt very relatable to me. The themes of cultural shame and the feeling of having to choose between your identity, your self and the ways you find joy, and how that intersects with expectations from your community, and shaming, really hits home. There’s been such a narrative wave of “poor gay people”, unempowered storylines where being queer is simply a tragedy. And while losing childhood community is oftentimes tragic and traumatic, this film really did a great job at teasing this all out while still giving the two Rachel’s incredible nuance and power in their stories. 

This movie was also incredibly sexy. I was enraptured watching it and 10/10 recommend it to others.

Also superficially, Rachel Weisz as this power queer girl photographer in NYC? Ugh, yes yes yes! 

4. The Favourite

 SUCH. A. GREAT. CAST! I watched this for Rachel and was completely enamored by Emma Stone and Olivia Colman by the end. 

There have been many wonderful dissections of The Favourite posted on Tumblr around the strategic use of gender in the costuming and just wonderful thoughts about all the pieces of the movie. I encourage folks who haven’t watched the film to watch it!! And then to go read you some tumblr film analysis. 

I loved the power plays and all the stereotypical period-piece court intrigue in a women-driven cast and just done so fucking well.

How I feel about this character -> At first he was nothing but a villain to me but then you and Bubble came along and suddenly Seath was fun. So today he is my problematic fav and the best whore dragon in the whole souls series. 

All the people I ship romantically with this character -> Gwyn. Seath had sex with almost everyone in Anor Londo but Gwyn is the one he really desires romantically.

My non-romantic OTP for this character -> His parental relationship with Priscilla

My unpopular opinion about this character -> Alone that I don’t loathe Seath is already an unpopular opinion I think... 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. -> Voice lines. Gosh, I would have loved to hear him talk! Ludwig

How I feel about this character -> He is a himbo through and through. I love him.

All the people I ship romantically with this character -> Laurence. And Maria kinda, in a crack way.

My non-romantic OTP for this character -> ... I just realized that in my verse Ludwig doesn’t have friends besides Laurence... But I guess Amelia? They have more a parent & child relationship though

My unpopular opinion about this character -> Like everyone seems to think he got crazy by talking to his moon light great sword? I don’t think that. I think it kept him grounded. Once he turned into a beast he regained enough control to end his own life before he could hurt anyone. 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. -> I would have loved if you could have spared him, but no, you have to fight and then talk to the head...

Um....yeah that's the point? It's still his inner self, it's just there is no "good" side of him left, the elk half is just the one that's more self aware. Talking just elktaur and nwk/the elk, not the the general, the whole point is nowhere king became an abusive monster regardless of how he feels, Horse even says as much to him in his mindscape.

"I'd feel sorry for you, if you didn't cause such pain and suffering."

As someone who loves himbos, I'm really done with this "himbos can't be incels, abusers, or problematic ever"-take ppl toss around. Some himbos are kin like Kronk and some himbos are tragic cautionary himbos. Elktaur was the later. Sorry. You got me going on my fav character(s) and I have a lot of pent up feelings about simping/simplifying this bad deerman.

The fact remains: Horse grilled the elderitch deer monster thing about how stupid he was in front of his crush. Power move, amazing.

Horse is one of the few cartoon protagonists who can say she got to roast her villain for being a dork about his crush!
