I've been meaning to post updates for my full stack web dev project, that's literally why I made tumblr, but ever since I burnt out on my last web dev job 5 months ago I feel so demotivated to even continue programming...I thought other peoples update posts would motivate me, but my brain is very stubborn XD I'm starting to hate IT and I feel v lost rn :c I was thinking of switching from web development to game development, but my biggest gripe with web dev was extreme sexism and I don't think game dev solves that unfortunately. Also I am from a shitty tourist town that already has very few IT companies (most of them are web agencies) and remote positions are all rejecting me immediately with no explanation...I don't really want to give up web dev as it has literally been my personality trait from like 2009 (remember stardoll presentations lol), but it's been completely tainted by bad experiences. Thank you, that's it.

Imma say it
I hate Booktok and everything it represents (glorification of anti-intellectualism and overconsumption) so by extension I despise ACOTAR but the anti-SJM fandom, particularly the anti-Rhysand, anti-Feyre and anti-Feysand peeps are some of the most intelligent people who have come out of the fandom from a book series I genuinely loathe.
I find it ironic yet charming that the anti side of this fandom is actually filled with brilliant and bright minds as opposed to the "pro" side of that fandom who speak and act like they've been programmed by a cult to repeat the same type of opinions like a broken record. The people accused of being "vile and hateful" happened to be some of the best human beings I've ever interacted with and are willing to listen to dissenting opinions and debate in a civil manner.
In contrast, the "pro" side of the fandom who love everything these books represent are generally some of the most unpleasant and vile people I've had the displeasure of encountering. I was already uninterested in the series but was peer pressured by an insane fangirl of this series to read it expecting me to love "the twist" and the same characters she does (*cough* Feysand *coughs*). I cut her off for being a generally horrid person over a damn book all because I dared to speak my mind (she threatened physical violence over my honest critique).
I'm a general fantasy reader (think JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin, Brandon Sanderson et al.) and do not like romance books therefore dislike romantasy in general since I am not the target audience for these books. I only "read", by that I meant pirating these books to form my opinion on them, will never buy them since they're rubbish and not worth my money (plus I hate the author for being a shit human being and would never give her my money). It was bleh and I found it painful to read since I've read fanfiction that was written more eloquently than this SJM-produced slop. I always hated bad boys even as a teenage girl and that sentiment still remains as an adult. So imagine how I physically cringed when the love interests were switched.
Getting back on topic to the "pro-side", they were genuinely hateful despite their incessant preaching about "love conquers all" and on multiple occasions loved telling me I should die (classy...) for voicing my honest critique that I didn't like it. What's more, is that the common sentiment of the "pro-side" was to coerce and brainwash me into liking 'le main characters' and how I had 'internalised misogyny' for not liking something I only consider as fairy porn with no substance to keep me engaged lmao
The best part is that I'm not even a shipper of their rival ship Feylin, Tamlin, or Nesta. I am ambivalent towards them at best but I started sympathising with them given that the story made me hate the main characters and their 'Inner Circlejerk of Bougie Faerie Arseholes' that love wanking their 'Dear Dictator Leader: Ricespam' (I'll never spell his name correctly since I hate rapists like him). It also helps that the fans of these 'antagonist characters' are genuinely nice and pleasant people. I'm almost tempted to so say I love Tamlin/Nesta just to rustle the Feysand cultists' jimmies lol
It seems like they only use "feminism" when it's on their side. Not bothering to accept contrasting viewpoints from women such as myself who do not like a book and are within our rights to do so. What's even surprising is that the pro-fandom is overwhelmingly like this. They'd bully you into submission if you don't kowtow to their demands. Having been bullied in my childhood, I can absolutely recognise the same pattern of abuse that I've been inflicted on in the past. Therefore, this produced the inverse effect than the one they had anticipated. I started hating their self-insert Feyre and Ricespam even more. If they weren't so toxic, I would have just remained a general hater but them acting like Jehovah's Witnesses over a shitty book definitely made me spiteful.
All I can say is: I'll never be a fan of these books nor part of the fandom because I consider it mid. But I do enjoy the thoughtful criticism the antis of said fandom provide and will likely continue hating the pro-side of the fandom for being hateful bigots (especially the Feysand shippers, never met a nice one. Not even once).

One thing that weirds me out about the proship discourse is antis always make callouts and shit in the Service Review forum and they always include art as evidence.
Like ok. You're claiming that the artist is drawing "bestiality" and "CP".
If those things are actually bestiality and CP, why is it that you feel comfortable looking for it, saving it to your computer, opening it in an art program, and looking at it long enough for you to censor it? 🤨
Idk it's just really weird to see these people claim "This artist is drawing child porn! CP is illegal! They're a criminal!" and then they put it on their own computers and then make a callout post with the art, which ironically, would be evidence that THEY were also in possession of illegal material.
Also that "I'm proship and I'm proud!" thread full of pictures of boats is really strange, considering those people were just in the other anti circlejerk thread talking about how proshipping is dangerous and how proshippers are pedophiles/zoophiles/predators/whatever.
If proshippers are sexual predators why are you so comfortable joking about being one and treating it like something silly and wacky?
Like "Yes I'm comfortable with saving (alleged) child porn to my computer and looking at it, and also joking about being a sexual predator, but we're the normal ones!" Are you fucking sure about that?
If these things were actually CSAM or actually bestiality they could also be held legally accountable for owning and distributing it, which is how you can tell they either:
Do not believe these things are actual crimes OR
They are okay with distributing CSAM and should also be held criminally accountable accordingly.
They would also not post about it online and would go directly to the FBI, but they don't, because they know it's not a crime and they know it isn't actually CSAM/Beastiality.
I have seen actual CSAM when a well known art site I use was flooded with it, I have also been the victim of it and seen my own (because Antis have sent it to me on my non anonymous social medias, very charming, I'm not the only one they've done this to either.) These people have not seen actual CSAM. If they had it would ruin them, as it should, because actual CSAM is beyond words insofar as how horrific it is to see or be the victim of.
[ We avoid the word 'CP' here, it's outdated, CSAM is not porn, it's just abuse]

if someone tells me “why don’t you leave if it’s that bad” or “you deserve what’s happening to you” im gonna flip my shit. leave to fucking where, how? have you seen the average paycheck of a russian? and don’t fucking count moscow, i dare you. look at all those people barely scraping $300 a month for food and a roof over their heads with nothing else left and tell them that buying plane tickets and saving up enough to last god knows how long while waiting for a job permit AND searching for a job is EASY. oh, of course refugee programs are SO easy to get into, and everybody is just so excited waiting for russians to come (except european countries are considering closing borders because they’re tired of russians running). cuz everyone is so fucking hyped to have us there, right? same people that are gonna go on the internet later and say how much they wish russians would stop whining and leave, except, well, not to my country, to somewhere else, i wouldn’t want to live next to a ~terrorist~. speaking of, everyone is so fucking punk and immune to propaganda, yet believe when putin and his little circlejerk say that everybody fucking LOVES him? that people sign up for army willingly? that everyone "allowed" all this to happen? i’ve been to the fucking protests, i’ve seen people bloody & bruised getting hauled off into paddy wagons, i’ve seen people get a prison sentence for throwing a plastic cup at a cop on a riot, i've seen young men get jumped by authorities at metro stations and outside grocery stores so they could be given a drafting letter with no chance to escape, i’ve seen people getting ridiculous fines for standing outside with a PLAIN FUCKING SIGN because “we know what this is SUPPOSED to be about”. sasha skochilenko got 7 years in prison for replacing price tags at a store with anti-war messages, FUCKING STICKERS. get off your high horse and tell me, full fucking honesty, would you be protesting if you knew for sure, 100%, you’ll be going to prison when, WHEN, they catch you? and yet people STILL DO. and people still GET CAUGHT. and people get hunted and tortured and receive insane sentences for the stupidest things. “russians don’t do shit to stop the war” FUCK YOU. im tired of always being nice about this and trying to explain shit in hopes that someone will get it. fuck you for making this all about yourself (“yeah i feel bad for you but also can you imagine if this happened in the usa? oof”), fuck you for only caring when it’s convenient to paint yourself as a good person (why continue to spread awareness about ukraine when it’s not the hot topic of the day anymore?), fuck you for believing in lies and putin’s propaganda. everyone is so fucking aware and well-versed in politics on the internet. but it’s easy to be when your country cares about fucking human rights at least A LITTLE, right? it's easy to assume that free speech is everywhere and available to everyone, right?

Are we lucky enough to hear about one of those OCs?
This one's a little against the premise, but I've got a pretty neat Legacy: Life Among The Ruins campaign going, tentatively named "Ragnarok Circlejerk", and I'll tell you the tale of my gal, a funky little critter named Yai-Isa-Nim.
I think she counts as a blorbo from my brain.
She's a nasty eldritch abomination called a Neth. The setting's post-apocalyptic and society ended as a result of an eldritch convergence humanity has interpreted as "Ragnarok", or simply the Fall. A horrible, branched entity-- the Wyrdtree breached into Earth, carrying with it a chaotic energy called Wyrd, which turned Earth into a nightmarish wasteland. Neth are mutated humans capable of thriving in the shattered landscape.
Their phenotype sorta looks like they've been hybridized with a reptile and some kind of eldritch insect-- resinous scales, prehensile tails, shining pink eyes with slit pupils, slime-dripping claws and digitgrade legs. They communicate with each other in clicks and trills.
Oh! They also purr.
Neth resemble no known animal, but instead are a kind of fully-realized genetic optimization project, a gestalt of numerous adaptations and runaway mutations. They can trace their origin to a genetic program run out of a Neo-Soviet gulag ,created in a prescient attempt to devise a labor force that would survive the coming Fall.
Horrifically, they succeeded: the Neth were left alone amid the chaos, and are now thriving: breeding teeming hives and lurking in the dark places beyond humanity's dwindling firelight.
Neth live underground in eusocial societies lead by a Tyrant-- Tyrants command the drudges, control the incubators and produce pheromones that give them some enhanced sway over other Neth. It's not quite mind control, more an animal magnetism that has to be accompanied with savvy rulership. Neth will rebel against an incompetent Tyrant, as we'll see with Yai.
Tyrants war with each other, and atrocity is a way of life-- cannibalism, slavery, and zero-sum wars of extermination are everyday occurrences. That said, the cruelty's not inborn but learned: the Neth are simply iterating on the brutal life their ancestors lived in the gulag.
While Neth have all the equipment to make babies the old fashioned way, they almost exclusively reproduce via incubation pods which turn humans into Neth, and dead matter into symbiotic "drudges", adorable little bipedal isopod-lookin fuckers, which I describe as "meat pikmin". Drudges work alongside the Neth as drones, sorta filling the slot of work animals.
For this reason, they make a habit of capturing humans (living or dead) to replenish their numbers, making them rightfully feared as enemies of civilization.
They're no drones, though: Neth all have their own personalities, and enjoy expressing their individuality and interior lives. They compulsively create art like humans do, and are particularly handy with their resin, and your average Neth is seen replete with charms, jewelry, and sculpted chitin, either homemade or sourced from skilled artisans, who're prized amongst the hive.
All that said, we can now understand our girl Yai:
Yai's a rebel tyrant, leading the newborn "Nim Hive". She staged an insurrection with her peers, and scored some royal jelly-- a genekit that promotes a garden-variety Neth to a Tyrant. Thus enhanced, she gathered her followers and drudges and bolted to found a new home.
Yai is, by Neth standards, a bleeding-heart. She likes humans, and rejects the policies of forced capture and enslavement that are common among her peers. Still, she is a Neth, and sees humans as squishy, weak, and unaccustomed to the wasteland. They're stubborn, using dated tech they plunder from the ruins, encase themselves in unreliable suits, and repeat the mistakes of the past in an attempt to cling to a way of life that has already failed.
To Yai, the logical thing would be to convert as many people as she can into Neth so they can prosper and survive in this new, strange world, but most humans aren't into it. This is where the other Tyrants would start capturing, reeducating, and converting any hominid they can catch, but since Yai's a softie, she's instead attempting to slowly forge bonds with humanity, understand their ways of living, and use Neth power to protect them.
In-game, the Neth are just one family at the table: Her bridge to connect with humanity is another player's family: a gang of kids who play a "game" that has some arcane connection to the beasts of Ragnarok, something the Isa Hive interprets as proof that humanity can adapt mentally, and adopt new techniques to exist within the wasteland, while the kids think the Neth are kinda cute and helpful. What kid doesn't want a monster pal?
These two factions exist alongside a company of the defunct Red Army, some raiders worshipping a lycanthropic mutant goddess-- a fork of the same mutagenic force that created the Neth, and the Concern, a secretive society of transnational black-ops who foretold the Fall, but were unable to stop it-- think XCOM crossed with the SCP organization. They also had a hand in making the Neth.
The factions are getting along pretty well right now-- trying to stop some bandits who fucked up a rite that called an eldritch entity, Kvasir, to bless them with sorcery. His "intoxicating blood" is presently polluting the fuck out of the homeland. Stay tuned to see how they handle that.

Meanwhile in the AI circlejerk...
Think of your favorite animated movie. One where someone put thought and care into every movement on screen. They had experts, they experimented with reference footage, maybe they even painstakingly rotoscoped people to get it right. Where every detail holds up under scrutiny, and every frame is truly a painting, perhaps literally...
Now watch this dog not only lose and regrow legs, but somehow pass its foot off to another leg. Watch the front paws.
Tumblr media
This construction crew, which includes the T-1000 apparently, hit by 2-4 workers in what's probably supposed to be a forklift?
Tumblr media
But, okay, okay, those aren't the focus. Those look good holistically, maybe?
How about this shit?
Tumblr media
I swear to God, I didn't mess with it to make this look bad. They thought this was not only fit for consumption but that it belonged in their grand opening showcase.
I hope you feel as insulted as I do.
The program is called Sora, btw, so if any of you wanna fuck up the algorithm by spamposting about Kingdom Hearts or Digimon instead, that would be great.

This. Even if GenAI perfected creating A Dude it doesn't provide any way to specify a structure that must be tweaked by a specific amount.
AI fails utterly at perspective, as laid out above, but also at anatomical and mechanical art. Dinosaurs with extra legs, fighter planes that are a scrambled mess of triangular surfaces, and I have zero hope it'll know what the fuck an antorbital fenestra or Divertless Supersonic Inlet is. If I went out and soapboxed this to a more visible platform than what I have I'd be flooded with about a trillion "it'll get there!" responses- but where is *"there?"* There would not be AI at all. There would be a tool to help me calculate ideal placements of structural elements or a model of a skeleton to pose to help with perspective, another tool to do the placing- ie, opening any 2D art program or 3D modeling software and just putting the stylus in the appropriate places- and then from there just the fucking fill tool to make a solid object of it, and a shader or brush for all the rust and texture and integument and shadow. Most of these already exist, and what aspects do not will not be descendants of current image breeding software- they will be welcomed by the greater art community as situational tools, where GenAI rots as a proof of concept that somehow grew into a cult, circlejerking itself as the end of all other forms of illustration. Riding off the anti-artist sentiments of the Monkey Jpeg army as the world's longest, most painfully forced Own The Libs bit. GenAI is a dead end.
We have perhaps made a mistake to describe AI as soulless, because that lets chucklefucks call it subjective and move on. No, what it lacks is something far more concrete: design. Style. Intent. Form. You're looking up images, same as going onto Google, except, wowee, technology, these images don't exist! Too bad they suck and you can't fix them. But, hey, at least the fucking teratoma you're trying to pass off as a Dragon will come out with pretty shading. Better light and shadow than I do honestly. Will look good on a wall, from the other side of a room, probably.
This machine kills AI

It’s so obvious how maxdibert had multiple alt accounts and pretends to have all these friends. They all message the same, they all think the same, they all post after one another. It’s actually pretty funny but also pretty sad. She admitted to having a psychiatric breakdown and I don’t think she’s mentally there. She’s obviously created a fictional reality for her where she’s got a bunch of friends, is a successful lawyer, is great at everything she’s done, is conventionally pretty, and has two parents who dote on her. I personally think she’s a narcissist who’s also bipolar. No lawyer or anyone with a professional career would spend that much time and effort going on tumblr and hating every post and writing essays after essays bashing fictional characters. Don’t lawyers have real people to defend? Her followers may be dumb enough to believe her, but she’s been called out multiple times by people in her country for lying about being a lawyer.
Right? I have also noticed how similar they all are. It's possible they're just a little circlejerk influenced by each other, but with the way some of the stuff maxdibert writes and how ChatGPT-ish it all sounds, I wouldn't be surprised if she's using AI to maintain different personas. They all sound like robots programmed by the same stupid programmer.
I also agree that it seems highly unusual for a lawyer to be so chronically online. I get and understand passion, but with how chronically online she is either she's shit at her job or lying about having it. If even Spanish people who understand how the system works there think she's lying about being a lawyer, I'd believe them lol. She's a compulsive liar so what's one more lie on top of all the others?

rambles about sustainability and whatever follow based on work today
modding a marketing class today and aside from reinforcing my absolute Hatred of marketing and all related things it also feels like these student presentations are hitting on something that is a particular bother that i’m starting to articulate
the marketing class is for engineers and this group is pitching a product which fits neatly into the university’s mandate and sustainability (its a west coast university how did you know lol) and their target market is progressive governments (ignoring countries who Don’t Care) and young urbanites (and it was mentioned that typically women are more interested than men in being eco friendly and whatnot because marketing is full of these “we’re not overgeneralizing or stereotyping we are just looking at the demographic data thatwestole ! :) “ and of course they are congratulated for being specific with their marketing plan and wow what an innovative design and people will love it and its solving a problem! :)
and it just reiterates for me that a lot of the conversation around sustainability is just about marketability. it’s about the niche of stereotypical people who are already interested and have a much easier means of doing something about it because they tend to live in places that make those lifestyle choices more feasible. get the green influencers on board! woo.
i brought this up when one of my colleagues founded an eco-club in our department at u of t, yes i think having a mug program and saving money with reusables (this was just before the pandemic hit) is a nice idea but when you are talking about what can we do to enact wider social change you have Got to stop this circlejerk of targeting the people who already care or are in a position to care and ignoring the larger problems in other places. It just feels like studying what you already know for a test and ignoring what you actually have to study.
And I don’t have any answers, it’s just so frustrating to me that we can’t seem to have conversations about what the fuck are you supposed to do when like me you are actually interested in change but also you lived in rural alberta for a decade. the conversation is constantly pitting these stereotypical diet conscious urban outdoor enthusiasts vs the rural redneck oilmen farmer instead of actually considering how like. infrastructure and geography and sources of income and goods are all barriers for people and you need Everyone involved in the conversation if you want them to actually care about the issue that... surprise... affects everyone. Even if they don’t want to show up to the conversation, you can’t just pretend they don’t exist or they will solve things on their own. (and this is not even touching on indigenous struggles on this issue because in some cases - like a recent story about geothermal in manitoba - the federal government legally strangles these projects before they can go anywhere)
whenever this comes up i get frustrated but i just feel more helpless and irritated at the end of the day. i will say that the push to eat and buy local over the past decade has been really beneficial even though the holes in the supply chain have become more obvious in a shorter amount of time than most people would like but. after living in toronto where farmers markets were rumoured to resell food from the grocery stores for higher prices, sometimes it is nice to be closer to what fragile rural roots i have and to have access to local food lol.
like post secondary is such a huge benefit in my life and i don’t exclude myself from being stuck in this narrow thinking i just wish this wasn’t so polarized and that people didnt just focus on the marketable feel-good bits.

Writers Cant Write Apologies
heres some of the YA writers who were quick to support sarah dessen bully a young woman off social media for daring to not support one of her books as a required read.... THREE YEARS ago & their non apologies/backpedaling.
1. Siobhan Vivian
tweeted "fuck that fucking bitch" after the incident, just a few weeks after apologizing for telling a stranger off who didnt deserve it and learning there was a context to the person's actions that made her comment seem out of pocket
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so what was this nyt bestseller's brilliant apology after apparently not growing from this event she said she hoped she grew from just a few weeks ago?
Tumblr media
calls it "suckage" and says she doesnt know "the impact of her words"... a writer. also no mention of reaching out to the "fucking bitch" to apologize personally, just a vague "I'm sorry I didnt realize there was context to this cropped news article"
2. roxane gay
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry the girl I was harassing was found and harassed by other people. dont take any responsibility for my specific actions tho."
3. tiffany jackson, dhonielle clayton, angie thomas
Tumblr media
I'm not exactly sure what exactly these two's strategy was, but it sure was stupid in this age of the internet:
delete the tweets and no one will ever know!
tiffany jackson, however, takes it a step further by ACTING AS IF SHE WAS ALWAYS ON NELSON'S SIDE, tweeting this after deleting the last tweet:
Tumblr media
truly an insult to our intelligence
angie thomas lucked out, as I haven't been able to find a screencap BUT several articles mention her @ing nelson's university & telling them to NEVER choose another one of HER books for their program because they selected on of hers but not one of sarah dessen's ONE TIME, ONE YEAR, THREE YEARS AGO
4. NSU
Tumblr media
wrong! couldnt even get the name of the young woman correct! not even close to spelling "brooke nelson" right. terrible.
5. Jodie picoult
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no apology, no acknowledgment that her platform resulted in her fans attacking this girl, Jodi picoult's strategy is to continue dragging Nelson's name through the mud, patronize or outright ignore women in the comments who are calling her out, call men who are making the exact same points "mansplainers", and crying sexism
not to mention her saying "any writer" can make stories about young women and therefore should be above criticism purposefully dances around the point that her and her posse of 40+ yos writing outdated, misogynistic, and overall TERRIBLY written teen romances.... are shitting all on an actual young woman who is in the same field as them!
6. Sarah Dessen herself
Tumblr media
where to begin except point by point
"I apologize to the person" YOU KNOW WHO IT IS AND YOU KNOW SHE ISNT SEEING THIS. REACH OUT TO HER PERSONALLY AND APOLOGIZE INSTEAD OF GROVELLING FOR FORGIVENESS ONLINE
WHAT ARE YOU APOLOGIZING FOR? posting a screencap? purposefully cropping out her true meaning & the book she was supporting so it looked like she was dunking on you specifically? liking and retweeting tweets calling her a "fucking bitch"? accepting the university's apology to you?
"moving forward I'll do better" this wasnt a mistake! you purposefully sought out this story that only happened to mention you ONCE in a small town IN ANOTHER STATE about events that happened THREE YEARS AGO! and then vilified this girl for DAYS before your circlejerk of other writers and stans was interrupted by normal people with lives telling you that's fucked up! YOU ARE NOT THE TEENAGER YOU WRITE ABOUT YOU ARE 50 YEARS OLD ACTING OUT HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA.

I think it’s funny in an ironic sense that of the “big” trans subreddits (at least the ones that i’ve come across), r/AskTransgender is the least toxic towards trans people, when it’s the most aimed towards cis people.
I’ve mentioned r/traa briefly on here before and basically it’s a cesspool as it implies the whole “catgirl bottom thigh-high programming dress-go-spinny” type of trans woman (which is perfectly fine for the record) is the universal trans experience. There’s also the issue of transmasc and nonbinary people being drowned out constantly, as even the couldn’t-be-more-obvious “i’m a trans man and i would like to talk to other trans men” posts get drowned in a sea of “i’m not transmasc but i support you” and various levels of uwu speak. There’s also the obsession with the fuckin’ transphobic joke character from Re:Zero. Highly toxic and bad for trans kids who don’t (or don’t want to) fit with the stereotype.
I’ll admit to not knowing much about r/egg_irl but again it falls into the trap of universal trans experience, also the practice of labelling people as “eggs” is inherently not great, at best it’s just kinda mean-spirited and at worst it can and will out people.
I’ve seen exactly two posts from r/TransgenderCirclejerk, and they were both horrible. Both posts relied on the whole “use slurs for shock value” thing (the f-slur and the t-slur mainly) as if people can’t possibly be triggered if another trans person is saying it, also dedicated circlejerk subs tend to be a 50/50 on nice place to hang out or utter shithole, you can guess my opinion on tgcj
I’m not going to say r/AskTransgender is a “good” subreddit per se, it has it’s fair share of issues and, like I said, it’s aimed more at cis people than the other subs, but it has the capacity to be actually helpful, which is more than I can say about the others.
Ironically, though AskTrans is the most aimed towards cis people, traa is practically a caricature of how cis people view trans people (trans women in particular)
IDK I just find that funny

currently in one of those lectures that are basically about looking at health through an equity lens and the professor is basically just saying shit we all knew since we were like. Teenagers. And the fucking other professors and residents saying "oh what a cool diagram." Asking stupid questions just to virtue signal that they are So Woke etc...endless circlejerk
The only people I respect are those that are continuously giving their time and energy to actual community projects and research, who have too much self-respect to go on and on about a health equity lens but will publish two papers a year on the difference in outcomes or stay after hours to volunteer at free clinics and harm reduction programs

Watching this evolve further over the course of the day has been interesting. There are so many interesting conflicting viewpoints from people that do not engage with academic literature and making assumptions just from the abstract of a book-length doctoral thesis:
This is useless because the topic is too niche for there to be any practical purposes.
This is useless because there is already an overwhelmingly large body of literature on the subject.
This isn't sufficiently complex enough for a doctoral thesis.
This is overly complex and because it cannot be communicated to a person not involved in her program, it's useless.
Taxpayer dollars are being wasted on humanities and English degrees like this.
She only got her degree because of the insular circlejerking of academia and not because of her own work.
I think people are approaching defending her from the wrong angles, sadly. I don't think academia is a hill worth dying on and I say this as someone who wants to be an academic and mainly a college educator. Unfortunately I do think a lot of people in academia forget how to make their work relatable and understandable to people, and even calling them laypeople is taken as an insult.
I acknowledge that anti-intellectualism is rooted in insecurity in one's own intelligence and propaganda that academic elites are just practicing doublespeak and deceiving the average person. However I do think there are some class issues involved which are mostly propaganda; I frankly don't know any rich academics. I think academics need to show that theses like the one being discoursed about are just a proof that you're able to "do science", they're one piece of work in a much larger body of work that a doctor is expected to complete over the course of their life.
Of course this isn't getting into the horrible misogyny that woman is being subject to but like, there is very little I can say about that.
the reaction to that woman completing her doctoral thesis on smell in fiction is pretty interesting to me, because the things people are upset with her for are:
1. Things not in the thesis' abstract.
2. Assumptions about the content because it is not even published yet.
