UNDER THE RADAR: NOVEMBER 2022

It’s been a hectic couple of months, but Under the Radar is never far from reach. Enjoy these tunes from VOX REA, Riun Garner, Miles Away and Danni Carra, Noca Project, American Lips, and NOLLE.

1) VOX REA - “Julia”

We’ve covered sisters Kate and Lauren Kurdyak since 2015, and their enchanting sensibilities haven’t waned. “Julia” (604 Records) is one for the hopeless romantics and daydreamers.

“The smell of your perfume / turns me the happy kind of blue.” They explore the nonsensical thoughts of infatuation and continuing to return to a toxic relationship. A push and pull where it’s easy to fall back into and justify old habits – the reckless highs are to “die for.” It has a silky and electric feel, subtle with a sweet aftertaste. While they’re best known for their darker noir pop, a dreamy essence isn’t new to the duo, instead taken up a melodic notch in their newest effort. To be enamoured is to be in danger, foolproof flaws at any corner. Drawn in by loyalty and fantasy, “Julia” does not err on the side of caution in its foolish play but coolly delivers in every aspect.

2) Riun Garner - “Hasn’t Gotten Easier”

“Hasn’t Gotten Easier” was penned in a heartbreak state of mind. Its hushed, halcyon tones speak to the listener. Indie folk guitar strums and keys meet Garner’s yearning vocals – more determined with time as he attempts to fill the space between his empty hands and heart. Garner carries the weight of change with charm; attentive notes; hoping the smiles will one day come as they used to.

“It’s not like this is the first time / but it still hasn’t gotten easier.”

Riun Garner is a singer-songwriter and actor based in Vancouver. His debut EP All We Know and All We Forget was released in 2020.

3) Miles Away and Danni Carra - “Back to Sleep”

“When the sky turns upside down / I’ll fade into you, like I always do.”

It’s very poetic, delicate in how it approaches the escapism we can feel in dreams. Producer Miles Away and vocalist Danni Carra create a soothing aesthetic, but one that excites; synths and samples breathing emotions of remorse and reprieve. Yet, there’s also a notion of being clouded in fantasy versus reality—it fits with ease and solves our problems, why wouldn’t we choose to stay?

Carra has a longing and desperation in her voice, adorned by production less bass heavy than Miles Away’s usual repertoire; wandering vibrations that are airy and reassuring in nature. Hopeful regret can lead to the most well-intentioned dreams and false security, chased down with purpose in “Back to Sleep.”

4) Noca Project - “Here Before”

Noca Project is the creative endeavor of Japanese singer-songwriter Norika Yue, alongside Jeff Oman (drums) and Malcolm Strasdin (bass). “Here Before” is a melancholy and textured effort akin to the (sandwich) filling of their 3-track EP, Silent Tragedies. It muses on the end of a relationship – coming to terms with what you already know: “All the sounds are dying down in waiting / I wished I loved you hard enough to say it.” This emotional vulnerability diffuses into its shoegaze instrumentals. In poetic control despite the somber subject matter, "Here Before” is a song I wouldn’t mind getting lost in live.

5) American Lips - “Labor of Hate”

Los Angeles/Montreal-based trio American Lips have released a new maxi-single, including “Labor of Hate.” The song paints a bitter atmosphere: standing on a beach, reflecting on your mundane job and “blaming your predicament on the neighborhood punk rocker who made fun of you for loving Tom Jones' cover of "Kiss" when you were 9 years old.” Oddly specific but rhythmically catchy. American Lips features Adrian Popovich (Tricky Woo) on vocals/guitar, Jessica Bruzzese on bass/vocals, and Sebastien Grainger (Death From Above 1979) on drums. Brassy horn samples add vibrance to the song’s dystopian feel. Their sound is explicit and engaging, with no signs of wiping out.

6) NOLLE - “tuesdays”

"Tuesdays” is a trip into the dark side of the music industry and a cryptic reference to the infamous ‘27 Club.’ Inspired by the “insecurities and societal expectations” faced, NOLLE (Nicole Hylton) has a raw and unnerving spark as she muses about fame and its toll. We want going at a dream as an independent artist to be glamorous – hard work, dedication, music that speaks to our soul making it to the big stage, but it can be the opposite, a proverbial nightmare (“You only become unusually famous / from your grave therefrom”).  

It’s elaborate and torments the mind. The distressing tone flows throughout; distorted vocals, electric guitar and drums that feel both combative and desperate. Her voice, a gritty drawl that I loved, exploring the detachment in a matter and goal so personal to her. A clandestine message to others, “Tuesdays” documents power and vicious cycles, standing by a style true to herself.

Summary: Melissa finds out that the reader is Italian also.

Notes: this is my first go at a fic, but it’s been bouncing in my head for a couple of days.so it is short and sweet I might continue if y’all think this is any good 

Warings: none  

You have been a teacher at Abbot Elementary since the beginning of this school year, a new 1st grade teacher. You were a first-year teacher after finishing up your student teaching at another district the previous year and after a long search you ended up hired here, the students were your run of the mill kiddos no harder than any other kids and you loved your class. Your coworkers, however, ... anything but especially a certain elusive red head. From day one Melissa made it clear to you that she had no interest in “baby sitting” so you simply kept to yourself eating at one of the couches instead and taking over the coffee table to grade occasionally.  

This afternoon, however, was different when Janine called out to you. “And what about you (y/n)?” “Wait what was the question?” you ask clearly not used to being part of the conversation. “See this is what I'm talking about these new teachers don’t take this seriously” Melissa speaks to the whole room while making direct eye contact with yourself.  

“I’d hardly consider that fair Ms. Schemmenti, I wasn’t a part of this conversation previously how was I supposed to know that I needed to listen in” she rolls her eyes at you as Janine tries again. “I was asking how your class was handling the family tree projects” you nod in response “great I've reached out to the parents to get ahold of pictures for their posters. The kids are all excited! Are any of you going to be making a poster as well?”  

“Oh yes my students were very insistent on me participating” Barbara responds to you as the rest simply nod in response. “Well, I look forward to seeing all of your trees” you say gathering all your belongings heading back to your classroom for the second half of your day.

It wasn’t until all the posters were finished and put up along the hallways outside of the respective classrooms that Melissa came into the staff room addressing you first. 

“You’re Italian?” you look up from where you were grading in your normal spot. “yes?” you respond not seeing the issue. “why didn’t you say anything?” you look up at her deadpan “You didn’t ask” looking back down to finish your grading. She huffs out “but your last name is (L/N)!” she is clearly distraught by this, but you don’t look up this time simply nodding your head.  

By this time Babra is snickering at her friend. You have a smirk on your face now looking up over your glasses, “would it have changed anything if I did tell you? If I remember correctly you didn’t want anything to do with me when I got here.” “yes, it would have changed a lot!” she moves her bag come sit with us it's about time I have someone to back me up on some things” she chuckles you hesitate before deciding you have nothing to lose as you sit with them. “Fine but just for today.”  

It was in fact not just for that day and became a regular occurrence, especially when she realized just how pleasant your company was and just how much of an old soul you were. That began a beautiful friendship that none of the others quite understood but it made sense to the two of you and that is what mattered.

I do not know the opinions of banjo catfishes, but some studies have shown that fish seem to enjoy music, or at least have a reaction to it! How banjo catfish feel about banjo music, you ought to ask them.

So for a story called "Scrooge's Last Adventure", there is surprisingly little Scrooge. He is still the character who appears the most, but he doesn't even appear for the majority of the story. I still think he is the main character, though, as even when he isn't around he is the main focus of conversation.

The Perfect Pair

Wonwoo was one of the few people he knew who would still read the paper in the morning. Even if he’d abandoned the paper of it all, he’d don his glasses each breakfast to read the news from his tablet while picking his way through his meal. Today had been an early start, early enough for him to be awake and making breakfast when the Sunday paper finally landed at his door.

On days when both of you had the day off, Wonwoo was never quick to wake you, letting you sleep in as late as you wanted until you’d finally waddle from your room, finding him seated at the table, correctly predicting when you’d wake.

“Good morning.”, he’d smile softly at your sleepy stumbles as you rubbed the sleepy from your eyes.

“I made some breakfast if you wanna eat, baby.”, he gestured with his head toward the plate he’d set out across from him, unfolding his paper and scanning for something interesting as he ate.

Approaching your seat at the table, instead you slid the plate next to his, along with your cup of juice, straw nearby in case you were feeling little. With a questioning glance, he watched your actions, lifting his arm for you when you decided to crawl into his lap and eat your meal from there.

The newspaper wasn’t very interesting to you, it’s boring appearance and many tiny words made your head spin the more you tried to think about it. So you simply didn’t.

“Appa?”, you asked, tilting your head at the section he was fixated on reading, his eyes quickly flitting over the lines, not pausing even when he acknowledged you.

“Yes, baby?”, he spoke nonchalantly, always letting you come to him with patience when you had something to say. Without setting the paper down, with one hand, he popped the straw into your juice when he’d decided you’d need it after all and pulled it closer, urging you to drink from it.

“Why’s it have no color?”, you addressed his poor excuse of a picture book. The weekly comic happening to be in black and white.

“It does.”, he flipped to the front page just long enough to show you that there was indeed color, the title article having a colorful picture to go along with the headline.

“Hmph”, you thought, at last getting to your breakfast that was leaning toward room temperature with the time you’d spent not eating, “Can I color it.”

“No, baby.”, he responded, again just as calm and used to your silly antics, though the corners of his mouth had formed into barely noticeable smile. Occasionally he’d indulge, but he wasn’t afraid to tell you ‘no’. And coincidentally, it was just the sort of structure you needed, the two of you complimenting each other well.

Knowing that Appa’s ‘no’ meant no, you settled into his lap comfortably and finished your meal. When you’d finished, Wonwoo seemed to be insistent on you not staying at the table.

“Go wash your hands, baby. You’re finished eating.”, he suppressed his chuckle, finding it difficult to pry you from him now that you’d tangled your arms around him.

After some complaints, you waddled your way to the bathroom to wash up after breakfast. Once you’d returned, you saw that Wonwoo had retired the paper for his tablet and another cup of coffee. The paper, though he’d previously denied you, laid open on the comic section, your crayons laying on top.

Wordlessly, with a smug little smile, you sat in your seat across from him and both of you together enjoyed the Sunday paper.

From September 25 to 29, 2023, the Polish Air Force conducted aircraft takeoffs and landings on a stretch of a public highway, including the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-22 Fitter jets.

The military exercise codenamed "ROTA 604" was carried out on the road stretch of the airport - DOL or Drogowy Odcinek Lotniskowy in Polish - of the provincial road nº 604, southeast of Gdansk.

The "ROUTE 604" exercise is a military aviation training using a stretch of road as a runway and is intended for Polish Air Force personnel to practice the landing and takeoff procedures of military aircraft on public roads.

"This training allows our pilots and ground support teams to operate in the event of a crisis, for example, when they have to fly from an alternative temporary facility if they cannot land at their base," said Lieutenant Colonel Magda Busz, spokeswoman for the General Command of the Polish Armed Forces. “This is the first military exercise using highways in 20 years; it offers an opportunity to improve the skills and resilience of our crew,” she added.

The Allies recently conducted similar maneuvers to expose their pilots to the challenges involved in this type of expeditionary operation. The Finns regularly make landings and takeoffs on highways and, earlier this month, the Norwegian F-35s and the British Typhoons joined the Finnish F-18s during the Baana 23 road exercise.

Chapter 5: The Episode That Shares A Face Part 1

FNAF Cryptid!Sun/Moon x Cryptid Hunter!Y/N (SFW)

Something’s watching you. Your internal warning system fires off, whispering of something unnatural. You shift, gazing back out the window, then freeze. In between the trees stands a man, young, early twenties, perhaps even a late teenager. He stares dead ahead at you through the glass, as if there were no barrier at all. Leaves fall on his clothes, sticking to his hair. He doesn’t blink. You stare back. His eyes are dull, almost dead in quality. That’s not human, whatever it is.

Word Count: ~9,900 Warnings: Mentions of death and night terrors.

A/N: I had to do a few heavy rewrites on this one, and I'm not entirely happy with it all but it's as good as it's gonna get at this point. Once again, I'm cutting up this 'episode' to make it more digestible, both for me as a writer and for you the reader! There are some self pretty fun scenes here with the boys that I had a lot of fun writing as well.

You and your animatronic friend are on break from cryptid hunting and happen to meet some children, then you have an interesting sighting yourself, with some disagreements about relaxation time, kids are rule breakers, and Moon makes a mistake. It looks like that break isn't going to last very long.

My #1 post of 2022

Thinking about an AU where Y/N is a cryptid hunter and finds what they believe is just an animatronic helper (abandon, creepy jester meant for kids, but hey, they're into weird stuff so this is awesome!) but little do they know is that a very supernatural and ambiguous, demonic creature is inhabiting the endoskeleton with two forms for the day and night, and well, the day creature is very taken with the cryptid hunter but the night demon is less than thrilled about following around a weak human. Cryptid hunter is unaware of the situation and believes the animatronic to be highly advanced, and not at all capable of scaring away ghouls and goblins with a look alone as he always stays behind their back, protective, and much more terrifying than anything they've ever hunted.

01746 birthday bash ~day three~ chapter 28: rendezvous

content warnings: graphic violence, selective mutism word count: 604 words brief summary: rosinante sees his brother again after 14 years.

The main floor was so dark and chaotic, swarming with confused pirates. Rosinante couldn’t quite make out who had seen him, and who was firing. It was hard enough to see at all. Fuck it. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a grenade, tearing off the pin and whipping it across the room with a soundless Calm spell to really incite the hysteria. He ducked for cover while silently, a mob of pirates erupted. The giant iron shelf that collapsed into the glass office wasn’t nearly as quiet.

Despite the chaos, Rosinante found himself grinning with confidence. He was still in control. There couldn’t be more than a dozen pirates left. This was an impressive feat, working out to his liking. Maybe I could find the captain, get in a scrap with him, and—

With a startled grunt, someone leapt in from behind, pinning him to the ground. His head smacked against the concrete, leaving his entire world spinning. Whoever had assaulted him twisted his arms behind his back in a rough pin that nearly had him crying out. Shit. Why do I bother planning anything…?

“I got ‘em boys! Ha, ha, I got the rat-bastard—!”

A horrible, iron-bending-splitting-screeching echoed across the entire facility. Sunrise poured in. With still-spinning vision, Rosinante glanced over towards the massive garage door that had been pried open through wildly unnatural means.

Now he understood why those agents said just the sight of Doflamingo was enough to freeze blood solid.

“I-Is that…?”

“Do-Doflamingo!?”

“This must be one of his men!”

He stood there with an arm outstretched, backlit in the early morning sun. Just a glimmer of it caught in his lenses as he withdrew his arm, head turning as he took in the sights. The mass destruction, the littered bodies, the smoke. And then, as Rosinante’s crushed lungs puffed out shattered fragments of air, those eyes landed on him.

Fingers twitched. The man atop Rosinante cried out and gurgled. A headless corpse fell there on the ground beside him as the pressure slid off his back. Rosinante just stared, petrified. The Joker’s shoes clicked sharply on the floors, not unlike the sound of high-heels, as every pirate in the room remained entirely still.

Doflamingo paused a distance away from Rosinante. Not yet close for a conversation, or really much of anything. As if he just needed to take a closer look, to confirm that there really was a man lying there on the floor who could be his brother. And then, he turned away, hands out, fingers cricking. Massive worms, no, threads, burst through the walls, the floors. They ripped up foundation like paper, tangling around any remaining criminal and either spearing them through the chest, or beating them against walls until they weren’t even recognizable.

Frozen still, Rosinante just stared.

As Doflamingo eyed around the place, uncomfortably quiet, he lowered his arms, and the massive threads receded into the ground as if they ever belonged there to begin with. Walls crumbled. Dust settled. Swiftly, his head turned down to the floor-bound blond. Another click of a step echoed as he kneeled down, white pants marked with a bit of soot from the earlier explosion, feathers settling almost gracefully over dust and debris.

“Rosinante…?” How dreaded that name could sound, spoken with the voice of the devil himself. “Is it really you?”

Penance (Be Gay Do Crime) 25.1.23

Sonic gameverse. Sonic & Knuckles & Tails as brothers.

After failing the protect the Master Emerald, allowing it to fall into the hands of Dr. Robotnik and crashing Angel Island as his first introduction to larger Mobius, one Knuckles the Echidna is sent through a kangaroo court and sentenced to prison.

A couple years later, one Sonic the Hedgehog (accompanied by one Miles “Tails” Prower) breaks him out, convincing the Guardian he’s doing more good by going after the Emerald to retrive it then by sitting in cell doing nothing and being abused by prison guards.

The end result is them restoring Angel Island and using it to get the heck out of dodge. It’s hard for the authorities to come after you when you live on a floating island that doesn’t stay in one place.
