Everyday life at Hogwarts quickly settled into a familiar routine. Each day was filled with lessons, new knowledge, and magical discoveries. Gradually, Margaret began to feel more confident. She became better at understanding magical subjects and spells. She often thought back with gratitude to her lessons with her grandfather, which were now paying off. Thanks to their practice sessions, she found Charms and Potions classes much easier. She quickly mastered many basic spells and even helped her friends with their assignments.

“How do you manage so well?” Emma asked in surprise when Margaret once again effortlessly performed a spell in Professor Flitwick’s class.

“My grandfather helped me prepare,” Margaret replied, slightly embarrassed. “We practiced a lot before I came here.”

“Lucky you,” Sophie said with a smile. “I’m finding this all a bit more difficult.”

Her favorite class turned out to be Transfiguration, where she learned to turn matchsticks into needles, and she couldn’t believe that her own hands could perform such magic. She would hold the needle in her hands, marveling at the magic she could feel at her fingertips.

“Percy?” Margaret had said in surprise when Charlie first mentioned his brother. “He’s always so serious. I’m not sure I can find common ground with him.” “Yes, he’s strict with himself and others,” Charlie admitted with a slight smile. “But he has a kind heart. If you can connect with him, he’ll be a good friend. Try talking to him about something you both care about—like studies. He’s a real workaholic.”

Programming languages for artificial intelligence 2024

Introduction

There are a lot of articles about which programming languages are best for AI. I have previously posted on these in 2022 and 2023, producing top ten lists based on a number of articles on this topic from each year. In this post I will update these top ten lists.

Methodology

Only articles that were dated 2024 were considered. Despite this restriction, the data used in this analysis came from 54 different articles. Each article was from a different author, to prevent duplication. 

I analysed the lists in three ways:

The frequency at which a language appeared in the lists, regardless of the position on the list;

The median rank assigned to each language across all lists in which is appears, and;

A weighted median rank, where the median rank of the language was weighted according to the frequency at which is appeared in lists. This corrects for outliers that were highly ranked on only a small number of lists.

Results

The length of the lists ranged from four to ten, with a median length of nine. The most common list length was ten. Below are the top ten ranked languages, for each analysis method.

In order of frequency, the top ten languages for AI are:

Note that this is only the median rank of languages, regardless of how often they are listed. This has the effect of pushing some languages, such as ASP.net, higher up the list than they would otherwise be. This is corrected by the weighted median rank.

Comparing this to the weighted top tens from 2022 and 2023, we can see that while their specific rankings vary slightly, the contents of the list hasn't changed. That is, the top ten languages have stayed the same over the years. Python has retained it's top spot once again, and Java stays in second place. C++ and R continue to fight it out for third and fourth, while Julia has entered the top five for the first time.

Its not just a functional language, it's a functional logic programming (FLP) language. FLP isn't new, it's been around since the 90s (although its definitely never been part of a mainstream language before), but Verse's big idea is a calculus for FLP that it's deterministic. This means you can do Prolog-style logic programming with predictable runtimes. For instance, you can do programs like

x : tuple(int, int);

x = (2, y:int);

x = (z:int, 3);

x

And the program will solve for a value of x that satisfies both constraints on x. In this case, that means y=3, z=2, and x = (2,3). Earlier languages could do this too, but they always involved running a unification algorithm behind the scenes that may or may not terminate, and you don't know how long it'll take if it does. Whereas with Verse, the behavior is supposed to be a lot more predictable. And they're committing to that idea too, you would never dream of using something like Prolog or Curry in a game engine. The talk, slides, and paper on the core calculus go into more detail on how this all works.

There's also several other weird things with the language. It has first class types, meaning you can assign types as values. I'm not 100% sure about their implementation, but normally this means you can have dependent types and use the language as a full theorem prover, like Lean. They also have an effect system, which I suspect is inspired by Kuka.

In other words, it's got a ton of extremely experimental and weird features from very mathematically dense academic languages, and it's designed by the guy who created Haskell. And it's being used primarily by 13 year old fortnite modders
