Fuck it, I'm not gonna pretend anymore.
The rawest, most metal 'Apollo as a father' story is the one where he dooms a whole town to a child-killing plague after sheepdogs tear apart his son because his lover, Psamathe, had an abusive father, Krotopus, who would've never let her keep the child.
In a bid to keep the child safe, Psamathe exposes the babe (that is, leaves him outside in the wild without any protection; think Atalanta) and shepherds take him in and raise him as their own until his untimely Actaeon-esque death. Psamathe, hearing that her son died in such a gruesome manner, is near inconsolable and her grief cues her father onto the fact that Linus (the boy's name) was Psamathe's child all along whereupon her father sentences her to death for harlotry and lying about Apollo.
Apollo, evidently, was not very fond of that.
The alternative version of this story is even more metal because it's Krotopus' own dogs who find and tear apart Linus as an infant leading to Apollo immediately sending Poine to personally take babies from their mothers and kill them until the people made amends. Argonian Coroebus rose up and slew Poine to free the people of her curse but Apollo simply retaliated by personally plaguing Argo then and refusing to lift the curse until Linus was properly buried and his spirit was soothed.
In both versions, the dead is eventually quelled but in the version where Krotopus kills Psamathe, the plague rages on until the king himself gets an oracle where he's ordered to leave Argo forever and found a new city to live out the rest of his days. Coroebus, in his version, had to travel to Delphi to find out what his punishment would be for slaying Poine.
#apollo#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths#linus#psamathe#Apollo had quite a few sons named Linus tbh#Linus by Urania who was Heracles' music teacher and eventually got brained by a lyre for beating him#Linus by Calliope who died young and well Linus by Psamathe who also died young lol#It makes sense - a linus is a dirge after all#but MAN#I think it's really cool how Apollo has a decent amount of stories where he isn't free to just save his fly-girl from her insane dad tbh#Evadne was in a very similar situation to Psamathe but her father eventually came around#It's also really cool how protective Apollo is of these kids - in some versions Linus isn't even HIS kid#but rather a child from when Psamathe had been assaulted that Apollo was like 'no that's definitely my son idk what you're talking about'#btw you can find these stories in Conon's Narratived and Pausinias' Descriptions of Greece#Statius also has a version of it in Thebald but it's way more anonymous than Pausinias' or Conon's#rip Coroebus fr he was just trying to help 😭#Also idk if y'all understand how crazy it is that Apollo sent Poine to the Argives cause it's almost like sending a Fury or Ker herself#to hand pick children and slaughter them en masse for what happened to Linus#like Apollo was absolutely livid about it and I think more people should know about that time he murderised the infant population#of Argo for the sake of his kid and lover ♡

Psamathe was one of the fifty daughters of Nereus and Doris, the Nereids. She was the Nereid goddess of sand and sand beaches and the wife of Proteus, herder of seals.

what is your favorite most OBSCURE myth? 🤔 can be relationship, tragedy, ect ect anything, just one you never/rarely hear anything about and there’s very little material on :D
I love listening to your opinions and interpretations of Greek mythology :)
(1.) CEPHALUS AND PROCRIS CEPHALUS AND PROCRIS CEPHALUS AND PROCRIS CEPHALUS AND PROCRIS!!!
my sad mortal blorbos 💔😭
(This myth that makes me want to strangle Eos but I blame Aphrodite most of all because none of that horrible shit would've happened to them or Cephalus's descendants leading up to Adonis if she didn't curse Eos.)
Anyways, I like to think they're both Odysseus's ancestors through Laertes.
(2.) Psamathe
She was a Nereid just minding her own business on a beach because she's the goddess of sand and then this bastard shitbag son of Zeus takes a page out of his daddy's book and assaults her. Even transforming into a seal didn't turn off Achilles's loser grandfather Aeacus (I bet he had some interesting conversations with Minos who's wife banged a bull), and either out of her reclaiming autonomy after her rape or Aeacus being a fucking weirdo who wants to remember that time he screwed a seal, their son is named "the seal" in Greek.
At least they both love their son Phocus I guess but Psamathe's bitchass stepsons kill him out of jealousy but then the gods SET UP her sister Thetis with one of those asshole stepsons of hers and Thetis turns the wolf she sent after Peleus to stone and through her sister's marriage she has to be tied to her son's murderer until Peleus's sorry ass finally dies or for eternity (if Thetis made him immortal).
She's gets a happy ending according to Euripides though by marrying a King of Egypt (a major upgrade from Aegina if you ask me) and has two more kids (with her daughter Eido even being noted to be the apple of her mother's eye 🥹) so a win is a win I guess but the trauma this poor woman must have!
(3.) Poseidon has a baby with a man
Nerites isn't that obscure of a figure anymore, but ultimately, he and Poseidon are the Bi4Bi couple of all time and don't get enough love.
I love the Anteros origin story where he poofs into existence from Neridon's great requited love IT'S SUPERIOR TO AND FUNNIER THAN HIM JUST BEING APHRODITE & ARES'S SON FIGHT ME!!!
(4.) Erichthonius being the son of Hephaestus & Atthis
This isn't because I want erase Hephaestus's wrongdoings (I do like him though and think he deserves another partner who loves him back. And since every younger male Olympian has their tragic doomed love with a mortal let him have one too!)
it's just a plus that he doesn't do anything shitty to Athena in this version.
(5.) Astraea
Her, her prophesied "return", everything!
Non-Hestia/Athena/Artemis virgin goddesses are so underrated. She does sound pure and true to her titles as the Goddess of Innocence, Justice, and Purity despite her being pro-Cronus and a Titan Golden Age believer.
There's also a sweet moment in the Dionysiaca (which I mostly hate but this moment was sweet) where she nurses Aphrodite & Adonis's daughter Beroe.
I'm so interested in her dynamics with her family since her insanely horny mom Eos was cursed by Aphrodite and is sleeping around with everyone but her dad (sorry Astraeus) and her brothers the Anemoi work directly under Zeus and pull his chariot despite her favoring Cronus's rule.
(6.) Zephyrus's son is a more successful gay than him
Zephyrus, famous for pining after and killing the sexy spartan prince Hyacinthus, never actually managed to pull a man.
He tried his luck a second time with Cyparissus, another one of dear ol' Apollo's boyfriends, but the guy died of grief after accidentally killing his pet deer.
He must have better luck with women though since he managed to reproduce with three different ladies. One of these gals was the nymph Chloris, who he did kidnap, but she forgave him once he made her a more powerful goddess by giving her the domain of flowers.
Anyways, they had a son named Carpus/Karpos. Carpus had a swimming contest with his lover Calamus/Kalamos, the son of a river god. Carpus ended up drowning because the Greeks preferred their gays doomed, and Calamus loved his boyfriend so dearly that he downed himself as well out of grief.
(7.) Cronus helps Hera create Typhon
Gaia crashes out about Zeus to Hera of all people, and since Hera is probably pissed at Zeus too, she goes to rant to her crazy daddy.
Daddy Cannibal gives Hera two eggs smeared with semen and tells her to bury it. She does, and out pops Typhon.
...
Thanks for the ask! I had a lot of fun with this one.

greek mythology: psamathe
psamathe is the nereid goddess of sand and the wife of proteus, herder of seals. psamathe was seduced by the aiginetan king aiakos who ambushed her on the beach. she tried to escape his grasp by transforming herself into a seal but he refused to release his hold and so she conceded, bearing him a son named phokos. the boy was his father's favourite and his half-brothers peleus and telamon grew jealous and murdered him. psamathe sent a giant wolf to avenge phokos by harrassing the flocks of peleus but he managed to assuage her wrath with proper sacrifices.

Hey, same unclaimed kid from before! 2 days till we reach camp, uh Tartarus kid has managed to eat 3 buckets full of sand while I was asleep and now I have no idea what to do because it's vomiting endless pits of sand, 10x more than what it consumed.. what do I do?
Oh no, that's not good! How does a kid manage to consume three buckets worth of sand? That seems really excessive!
Are you sure this is a Tartarus kid? Because as far as I know, there shouldn't be any connection to sand. Maybe this kid is a legacy of Psamathe, the goddess of Sand? Still, even if they were, they shouldn't be consuming it!
Honestly, I don't know what to tell you other than to keep vigilant and try to prevent the kid from eating any more sand. If you have some way of reinforcing that it's bad behavior, it may help to stop the kid. That's mostly stuff along the lines of minor punishments like taking away privileges, like dessert (never necessities like a meal or love/human interaction, never make love and care conditional).
Just do what you can, try not to let the kid eat any more sand, and hang in there! You're almost at camp, and once you're there, Chiron and the other campers will be able to help you and the kid!
I wish you safety and the best of luck,
–Kally

“I have deserved Your refusal of mercy. Well then: rattle Your quiver and pluck Your twanging bowstring — dispatch a noble soul to death! But, as I expire, dispel that heavy miasma which hangs, sicky and pale, over Argos.” Those who earn Her respect find that Chance plays fair: impressed by the victim, Leto’s ardent son stayed His hand; won over, He lavished an unwelcome boon on the hero — his life. The evil haze scattered and fled the sky while you, Coroebus, exonerated, left stunned Apollo’s threshold. And so, each year, our solemn feasts repeat the appointed rituals. The honour, renewed, cheers Phoebus’ shrines.

Neptune in Motion - Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope

On the night of Sept. 23-24, 1846, astronomers discovered Neptune, the eighth planet orbiting around the Sun. The discovery was made based on mathematical calculations of its predicted position due to observed perturbations in the orbit of the planet Uranus.
Yes, according to historical records, Galileo Galilei drew pictures of what is now known as Neptune in 1612, although he did not realize at the time that he was observing a planet and instead mistook it for a fixed star; his drawings show the object near Jupiter, where Neptune would have been positioned at that time.
Key points about Galileo's observation of Neptune:
Date:
Galileo observed and sketched Neptune on December 28, 1612
Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun. It's the fourth-largest planet in the Solar System by diameter, the third-most-massive planet, and the densest giant planet. Neptune is also known as the Blue Giant for its large size and vivid color. Neptune's atmosphere is made of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The methane gives Neptune the same blue color as Uranus.
From NASA
Neptune
Length of day: 0d 16h 6m
Discoverers: Urbain Le Verrier, Johann Gottfried Galle, John Couch Adams
Discovered: September 23, 1846
Gravity: 11.15 m/s²
Radius: 15,299 mi
Neptune has 16 known moons. The moons are named after figures from Greek mythology associated with water or Poseidon.
about this planet
A day on Neptune is 16 hours, but a year lasts 165 Earth years. Barely one Neptune year has passed since the planet's discovery in 1846.

I hate being obsessed with minor mythological figures.
There aren't any Cephalus/Procris fics. There aren't any Rhea Silvia/Tiberinus fics. There aren't any Astraeus/Eos fics. There's only one Perses/Asteria fic and it isn't finished. There's only one Hermes/Penelopeia fic. There aren't any fics about Psamathe the most tragic Nereid. There aren't any Hesione & Priam doomed siblings fics. There aren't any Zephyrus fics unrelated to Hyacinthus.

hey I hope you’re doing ok!! For the ask game, 🌈? Also perhaps ☔️?💧, even?
Hello hello, thank you for participating ☆ Once again, I can't comment on whether or not this extract is particularly fluffy but I do think it's rather sweet and it's definitely romantic so I think it's good for filling out both 🌈 and 💧!! It's an extract from what I've tentatively dubbed my 'Women and Apollo' doc which is essentially just a big running document I have dedicated to exploring themes and dynamics between Apollo and the women he's been entangled with! This extract in particular is from my Melia section 🥰
The night is a cold sheet spread across her shoulders. She wakes in pieces; first, her flesh, bracketed between the raw heat of Phoebus' bare chest and the sharp sting of the night air's fangs, then her mind, pleasure's fleeting haze quickly swept aside by panic then worry then guilt. What would Kaanthos say if he could see her now, bare breasted and stained in a male-god's desire? What would Father? No doubt she would have to cede the seat of the temple to Kaanthos. How could a carnal woman serve the people after all? And her river - oh, her sweet river! Would his waters even deign to soothe her scales when she was so completely drenched in the scent of a sky-god?
How foolish she's been, throwing everything away just because of some sweet words and a pretty face. Maybe Kaanthos truly did deserve the temple after all. Maybe Melia didn't deserve such a treasure if she was so easily seduced.
She sniffles softly, slipping gently from Phoebus' loose grip. His heat wafts off his skin like the warmth of a well-tended hearth, it lingers in her bones as she kneels in the grass of this unfamiliar field. It makes the sear of shame dig that much deeper into her heart. Phoebus had listened well to her warnings. He'd carried her someplace far away from flowing water, somewhere distant where her brother's scrying eyes could not reach. The tears welling in her eyes finally fall as she turns this way and that, utterly and completely lost without a source of water to follow. How could she return now? Even she was not bold enough to have the man she planned to reject take her back to her father's house.
Stupid girl. Foolish. How could she have been so short sighted?
"Melia?"
His voice is laden with sleep's husk, his arm makes little grabs at the grass searching for her shape. She swallows her tears and bids her voice to not betray her, "Here I am, my lord. You may go back to sleep."
The mildest furrow of his brow. When he turns his head, his hair flows like rich golden oil over the dark grass, "Come here," his hand keeps searching for hers, patting the ground, dragging long fingers over the dirt and frowning when he does not find her. "It is not yet morning, why have you fled so far from my side?"
Melia cannot help but laugh at his visage, clumsy and squinty-eyed, less the graceful gentleman who promised her a taste of change and more a bumbling kitten desperate for its mother's teat. She wipes her tears as quickly as she can muster, "If you but open your eyes, I'm certain you would find me."
He makes a grumbling noise, some cross between a boar's grunt and the crow's deep bellow, "Is this another of your games? I'm much too tired for games Melia." Finally, his finger grazes the edge of her ankle and like a child, he lights up, eyes still stubbornly closed but smile positively radiant, "Ah, there you are!" Diligently, he traces the shape of her leg with his open palm, measuring the smoothness of her calf, the swell of her knee, the broadness of her thigh, then he lays his head upon her, cheek pressed close to her stomach, heated back like warm coals against her skin. "So cool," he murmurs and kisses her stomach, throws his arm around her waist and nuzzles further into her skin, "Tell me when you've need of the water -" a dreadfully wide yawn interrupts him. "- I'll fetch it for you."
Melia finds herself laughing again, just a tiny thing as she runs her fingers through the thick waves of his hair. What is she to do now?
As for a fic idea I'd like to talk about since I don't know if I'll ever write it: Among the many, many, many things I'd like to write but probably never will, I really wish I could just sit down and write a story about Tenes and Hemithea. There's a lot of reasons why I have no plans to ever properly tackle anything regarding the Iliad - chief of which being that there's just too much information and the amount of research would be insane - but a lot of what I would potentially focus on have to deal with people and places Apollo loves and his inability to protect those things throughout the conflict starting with Tenes. I absolutely adore exploring Apollo's paternity in my writing and considering how fiersome Tenes was and how both he and Troilus would die protecting their sisters, I've just always wanted to dig into an exploration of their lives and connection with their father and how Tenes' death specifically would've affected Apollo. Like yeah, I know Troilus is usually the point of focus for such works especially because of the manner in which he was killed, but Tenes was also beloved! Also considering he was originally punished for being falsely accused of sexually assaulting his stepmother, I can't help but want to write his wrath when he realises what it is Achilles intends to do to Hemithea. Alas though, I don't think I'l ever get to do more than think longingly about it, at least right now lmao.
#ginger answers asks#ginger writes#thank you so much for the ask!#fun fact about priestesses - most of them weren't actually expected to be celibate and were often married but#specifically oracles of Apollo in early times were expected to be virginal as they were supposed to be dedicated to Apollo#since Melia was definitely an oracle based on what I've read about the Ismenian temple I ended up working a lot of purity anxiety into#her interpersonal conflict#by the by oracles of Apollo stopped being required to be virginal at some point since that role ended up being taken up by older women#Melia's whole Thing is a lot of fun tbh both from the perspective of like#a goddess who clearly had a lot of power in her own right considering how magnified her temple and worship was but who was still very much#looked after by her brother and father. I don't personally think Kaanthos was overprotective of Melia but I do think he took his job#of being her bodyguard very seriously#and considering most accounts of their affair say that Apollo just kinda yoinked Melia without telling her brother and father I don't blame#Kaanthos for resorting to extreme measures to get his sister back#Anyway it's another suuuper underrated relationship of Apollo's that I'm kinda obsessed with negl it's up there with Psamathe#which like my god why does no one ever talk about Apollo and Psamathe#I DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE ALL OF THESE AMAZING STORIES Y'ALL PLEASE#PLEASE#Marsyas this and Achilles that#When are we gonna talk about the time Apollo sent a revenge demon to torment an entire town for the negligent death of his son#and murder of his girlfriend?#smh smh#apollo#melia#greek myth writing
