Walking the coastal path on SH59 Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki, 20km of shared pedestrian/cycle path.

I was the only walker, two cyclists.

SH59 is the former SH1 now replaced by the inland Transmission Gully highway. As a result, minimal traffic.

The Escarpment Track

High above what is now State Highway 59 on the side of Paekākāriki Hill, is the very scenic Escarpment Track.

Despite being well out of the city, this walk is easy enough to do by public transport.

Simply take the train to Paekākāriki, then it's a short walk to the trailhead and off you go. The walk finishes at Pukerua Bay Station, perfect for the train back into the city.

Two things worth noting about this walk are that there are many stairs and it is very high up with lots of exposed edges. For me, the former are fine but the latter are more problematic, so I was glad not to be doing the walk alone.

On the plus side, the views are gorgeous and the track is quite well kept with benches and rest areas. There was just one dodgy steep bit where there was a diversion due to a slip and you had to scramble a tad - hopefully that's been fixed since April.

Once you begin to descend, you descend quite rapidly and the last couple of kilometres just follow the trainline into Pukerua Bay. I would definitely recommend going this direction as I think it is more manageable in terms of it getting better as it goes.

Overall it was a 7.9km walk and took just over 2 hours and 5 minutes with a snack break and plenty of photo stops.

Paekākāriki Escarpment Track

P.E.T., czyli Droga Nad Urwiskiem trawersuje zachodnie zbocza klifów między Paekākāriki a Pukerua Bay - niecałe pół godziny jazdy autem z Johnsonville. Wzdłuż zbocza, prócz ścieżki, prowadzi State Highway 59 oraz linia kolejowa do Waikanae.

Zbocze jest odkryte, porośnięte trawą i niskimi krzewami, toteż widoki są niesamowite bez przerwy. Widzimy Kapiti Island, góry Wyspy Południowej, a cały czas słyszymy huk fal rozbijających się o skały w dole.

Urwisko jest również bardzo strome, z licznymi osuwiskami, które bez przerwy są naprawiane. Człowiek walczy tu nieustannie z naturą; tabliczki i niewielkie muzeum na początku szlaku wspominają o mozolnej budowie linii kolejowej w latach 30. XX wieku, okupionej stratami ludzkimi i usuwaniem skutków osunięć i zawałów tuneli. Sama ścieżka spacerowa znajduje się powyżej drogi i torów; jest na niej wiele schodów i kilka mostków wiszących.

Tak sobie szliśmy i szliśmy niespiesznie, podziwialiśmy, grzaliśmy się w mocnym już wiosennym słońcu, jednocześnie jednak smagani mocnym northwesterlie (wiatrem północno-zachodnim).

Najlepsze miało dopiero nadejść.

Siedzieliśmy na punkcie widokowym na szczycie wzgórza spokojnie rozglądając się wokół, gdy nadleciały 2 szybowce. Wiatr, jak już rzekłem, wiał mocny od oceanu, więc wzdłuż wysokiego na 200 metrów klifu były bardzo dobre noszenia, pozwalające osiągnąć pilotom długi lot poziomy, 50-100 metrów od terenu. Przelatywali tak kilkanaście razy, dając mi okazję do jednych z najlepszych zdjęć w życiu i to bez konieczności posiadania drogiego sprzętu.

Once the main road north from Wellington - State Highway 1 - now replaced by an inland route, and renamed SH59.

Has cycleway/walkway on the sea side, minimal traffic, ideal for my morning walk from Pukerua Bay to Paekakariki about 10km.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

 The film is about a clan of evil aliens from an unknown region, who all resemble circus clowns. They arrive on Earth and invade a small town in order to capture, kill, and harvest the human inhabitants to use as sustenance.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space was filmed in Watsonville, California, and at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The film utilizes practical effects, including rubber suits. The score was composed by John Massari. The film received generally positive reviews and has been considered a cult classic.

 Bad Taste (1987)

 This New Zealand science-fiction comedy horror film directed, produced and photographed by Peter Jackson, who also stars and co-wrote the screenplay, along with Tony Hiles and Ken Hammon. Independently produced on a low budget, it is Jackson's first feature film. Jackson and friends take on most of the key roles, both on and off-screen. The plotline sees aliens invade the fictional New Zealand village of Kaihoro to harvest humans for their intergalactic fast food franchise, where they face off against a four-man paramilitary force. It was a film that provided Jackson with the necessary leverage needed to advance in the industry.

 Much of the film was shot in and around Jackson's hometown of Pukerua Bay, north of Wellington, New Zealand using a 25-year-old 16mm Bolex camera.[4] Originally begun as a 20-minute short film called Roast of the Day.   Bad Taste was shot primarily on weekends over the course of four years, at an initial cost of around $25,000. Toward the end of the shoot the New Zealand Film Commission invested around NZ$235,000 into the film to ensure its completion. Heavily influenced by special effects pioneer Tom Savini, Jackson incorporated many absurdly gory special effects
