Kinetic Urban №G0842 [MAN 18.290/Gemilang (Kiwi Bus Builders)] laid up at Wellington Railway Station.
New to Greg Paul Coaches in 2015. It was sold to Bus Travel NZ Ltd (then a 50/50 joint venture between Leopard Coachlines and Tranzit Group) alongside most of the fleet.
When Kinetic began Skybus operations here, they purchased the 3 18.290s outright and began leasing the Scania K280UBs and K320UB off TR Group immediately. As such, 842 was given a total refurbish and is technically younger than 10 years, at least in the interior.
In 2020, Kinetic suspended all Skybus ops here due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such the 18.290s were transferred to GoBus for use as school buses in Silverdale.
This arrangement lasted until late 2023, when they were driven down to Pōneke for use on Metlink services. The downside to this has been the removal of the distinctive Lion's City hood from the roof, which is a pity.
Nonetheless, it is good to see all three in continued service.
With thanks to @tau9 <3 for the holiday.

The Escarpment Track
High above what is now State Highway 59 on the side of Paekākāriki Hill, is the very scenic Escarpment Track.
Tumblr media
Despite being well out of the city, this walk is easy enough to do by public transport.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simply take the train to Paekākāriki, then it's a short walk to the trailhead and off you go. The walk finishes at Pukerua Bay Station, perfect for the train back into the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two things worth noting about this walk are that there are many stairs and it is very high up with lots of exposed edges. For me, the former are fine but the latter are more problematic, so I was glad not to be doing the walk alone.

On the plus side, the views are gorgeous and the track is quite well kept with benches and rest areas. There was just one dodgy steep bit where there was a diversion due to a slip and you had to scramble a tad - hopefully that's been fixed since April.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you begin to descend, you descend quite rapidly and the last couple of kilometres just follow the trainline into Pukerua Bay. I would definitely recommend going this direction as I think it is more manageable in terms of it getting better as it goes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall it was a 7.9km walk and took just over 2 hours and 5 minutes with a snack break and plenty of photo stops.

Kinetic New Zealand N2465 [MAN 17.223/Designline] seen at Kinetic's Hamilton Central Depot.
With ~80 Geely C13ENZs due to enter service in Tāmaki, the MAN 17.223 is being retired en masse.
The plan is to move ~50 to Te Whanganui-a-Tara as a temporary means of increasing capacity. As such, N2465, seen fresh out of the paint shop, and others are being painted into Metlink's green/yellow. Though, N2465 is only half-done.
Of note, N2465 was recently assigned to Fieldays shuttle duties.

Half-price public transport April to June. $10 Metlink Daytripper gives unlimited train and bus till midnight, no charge for taking the bike.
I'm heading to Pukerua Bay. Two weeks ago a new motorway opened (Transmission Gully) meaning the coastal highway (SH1, now SH59) is no longer the route north from Wellington.
