Hey not to go all "tumblr is a professional networking site" on you, but how did you get to work for Microsoft??? I'm a recent grad and I'm being eviscerated out here trying to apply for industry jobs & your liveblogging about your job sounds so much less evil than Data Entry IT Job #43461
This place is basically LinkedIn to me.
I'm gonna start by saying I am so so very sorry you're a recent grad in the year 2024... Tech job market is complete ass right now and it is not just you. I started fulltime in 2018, and for 2018-2022 it was completely normal to see a yearly outflow of people hopping to new jobs and a yearly inflow of new hires. Then sometime around late-spring/early-summer of 2022 Wallstreet sneezed the word "recession" and every tech company simultaneously shit themselves.
Tons of layoffs happened, meaning you're competing not just with new grads but with thousands of experienced workers who got shafted by their company. My org squeaked by with a small amount of layoffs (3 people among ~100), but it also means we have not hired anyone new since mid-2022. And where I used to see maybe 4-8 people yearly leave in order to hop to a new job, I think I've seen 1 person do that in the whole last year and a half.
All this to say it's rough and I can't just say "send applications and believe in yourself :)".
I have done interviews though. (I'm not involved in resume screening though, just the interviews of candidates who made it past the screening phase.) So I have at least some relevant advice, as well as second-hand knowledge from other people I know who've had to hop jobs or get hired recently.
If you have friends already in industry who you feel comfortable asking, reach out to them. Most companies have a recommendation process where a current employee fills out a little form that says "yeah I'd recommend such-and-such for this job." These do seem to carry weight, since it's coming from a trusted internal person and isn't just one of the hundreds of cold-call applications they've received.
A lot of tech companies--whether for truly well-intentioned reasons or to just check a checkbox--are on the lookout for increasing employee diversity. If you happen to have anything like, for example, "member of my college Latino society", it's worth including on your resume among your technical skills and technical projects.
I would add "you're probably gonna have to send a lot of applications" as a bullet point but I'm sure you're already doing that. But here it is as a bullet point anyway.
(This is kind of a guess, since it's part of the resume screening) but if you can dedicate some time to getting at least passingly familiar with popular tech/stacks for the positions you're looking into, try doing that in your free time so you can list it on your resume. Even better if you make a project you can point to. Like if you're aiming for webdev, get familiar with React and probably NodeJS. On top of being comfortable in one of the all-purpose languages like C(++) or Java or Python.
If you get to the interview phase - a company that is good to work for WILL care that you're someone who's good to work with. A tech-genius who's a coworker-hating egotistical snob is a nuisance at best and a liability at worst for companies with even a half-decent culture. When I do interviews, "Is this someone who's a good culture fit?" is as important as the technical skills. You'll want to show you'll be a perfectly pleasant, helpful, collaborative coworker. If the company DOESN'T care about that... bullet dodged.
For the technical questions, I care more about the thought process than I do the right answer, especially for entry-level. If you show a capacity for asking good, insightful clarifying questions, an ability to break down the problem, explain your thought process, and backtrack&alter your approach upon realizing something won't work, that's all more important than just being able to spit out a memorized leetcode answer. (I kinda hate leetcode for this reason, and therefore I only ask homebrewed questions, because I don't want the technical portion to hinge at all on whether someone managed to memorize the first 47 pages of leetcode problems). For a new hire, the most important impression you can give me is that you have a technical grasp and that you're capable of learning. Because a new hire isn't going to be an expert in anything, but they're someone who's capable of learning the ropes.
That's everything I have off the top of my head. Good luck anon. I'm very sorry you were born during a specific range of years that made you a new grad in 2024 and I hope it gets better.

so for ckc in the update before season 2 came out voices were added to the characters. How does the code for that look/work? I’m working on a project on renpy and want to add those voice bites in but I haven’t been able to find a tutorial.
i pasted everything here but realized tumblr might have issues retaining indentations (and there's a LOT of code related to voice bites, specifically the dynamic syllable-reacting voice bite update we did a while ago) so i'd recommend you download the code here! you can copy and paste it, edit it to fit your needs, etc.
i've included comments to hopefully explain some of what's going on. anyway, for those interested in reading on tumblr, here are some examples of how to define characters with voices (probably most important part of the code anyway):

how do I set up vsc correctly? I always get project file not found error and I can't find a solution on the internet. Lmk if you have a fix :(
Hi! Thank you for the ask! I wonder in what situation this happens to you? When trying to open the file? Or when trying to run some command? Could be different reasons so maybe my answer won't really help you... But! I've had this issue sometimes; for example, once, I was trying to run a python script, but it wouldn't let me.
Here, the issue is that the folder I have open in VS code is a parent folder to the folder where the file I'm trying to run is located. Here, I'm running the script with the help of the "play" button on the top right.
What it does, I suppose, is try to run the file day-3.py in the directory/folder that is currently open in VS code, but! In the folder advent_of_code_23, there is no file called day-3.py!
So, your issue could potentially be that you are accidentally running your script in a parent folder where it can't be located, since it's in a child folder.
If you still want to have a parent folder up and running, and see all your children folders, you could use the terminal to manually access and run your script.
Step 1: open a new terminal (top option)
Step 2: in the terminal, type ls (stands for list) to see all the folders in your parent folder
Step 3: type cd (stands for change directory) and then the name of the folder you want to navigate into, where the file you want to run is located. (TIP! You can use the tab button on your keyboard to autofill the folder name)
Step 4: Now you can see that your location has changed to be <C:\...\parent-folder-name\child-folder-name>, which means you are now in another folder! So for me, now the location is <C:\...\advent_of_code_23\day-3>, which means I can now directly access everything in this folder! In my screenshot I also typed LS to see what the contents of my folder is.
Step 5: In here, I can now run my python file by typing python day-3.py
If you're working in another language, I would recommend googling "how to start a [language name] in the terminal". Or, if you're running for example a React project, you may want to look in your package.json to see what scripts are available, and run those with your preferred package manager, such as yarn or npm.
In my case, this project is set up with yarn, so I would run this using the yarn dev command.

So in case you're wondering what I've been up to for the last month or so (no one is here), I've been working on this-
A CRUD app! Because that seems to be what everyone's making these days. It's an editor for monster data. Because, like, all the tutorials were for managing employee data and shit, but this is what data I have that needs managing. It's got a React js frontend and a javascript backend.
It basically runs off this list of data that spawns the entry rows and stuff, so I can add to it easily or reuse the base code between projects:
That's neat, but it was a real pain in the ass to have to start up both the client and the server whenever I wanted to use it, so I made basically the same thing but in Python with tkinter:
And as an example of reuse here's it being used for moves data-
A lot of things are made easier with this. Mainly there's only one data list, whereas the CRUD app needed the state hooks declared, then the data list including the "pointers" to the state variables and setter functions, then the backend needed its own list of the names of the SQL columns.
This version has some extra features like, if you add something to the data list it'll add a column to the SQL database for you. Plus Python is similar to GDScript, so I could bundle a basic version of it with the Mondo code.
Meanwhile I've been upgrading the battle system to handle multiple mons in one battle-
Next I'm probably going to step back a bit and document the code, because it's becoming a bit messy and I need to clean it up

Relay operated power button

What you need:
a 5V relay module
Raspberry Pi
a bunch of cables
Explanation:
A power button on a computer case lets electricity flow between two power pins upon it being pressed, which is when the motherboard detects the button is pressed and reacts accordingly.

A relay is a specific kind of switch which lets electricity flow conditionally upon the flow of electricity in another circuit. The voltages involved both in motherboard power pins and on Raspberry Pi are generally low to not damage both, but we're taking extra precautions to electrically separate them both.
"5V relay module" here means that 5V is the voltage that is required for the relay module to work, while the controlling voltage can be lower. It being relay module it means it also has a flyback diode we'd otherwise have to provide ourselves.

Raspberry Pi's GPIO pins are programmable and can be controlled through Python code, and operate on 3.3V. Raspberry Pi also provides 5V output, but this one is not controllable.
By
connecting a power button to rPi GPIO pins
connecting the 5V voltage output pin from rPi to the relay module's Vcc input pin
connecting the ground pin from rPi to the relay module's groud pin
connecting programmable GPIO pins as the relay module's input pin
connecting the relay module's outputs (the normally open one and the ground) to the motherboard power pins
running some code on rPi
We can extend the power button functionality so Raspberry Pi can turn on and off our computer, while also still keeping the power button working.
Which is what I use to remotely turn on my computer on, by SSHing to rPi and running a script to turn the PC on while I'm away from home.
Why not Wake-On-LAN?
Wake-On-LAN has restrictions which makes it not as reliable as it could be, for example:
The ability to wake from a hybrid shutdown state (S4) (aka Fast Startup) or a soft powered-off state (S5) is unsupported in Windows 8 and above

regarding getting a coding job, i guess the main tips would be, look up a language that's in demand generally (C#/.NET, Java, React and other JavaScript libraries, python tend to be the most popular) and look into self-learning online; not just tutorials, but Reddit daily programming challenges, software developer interview examples and things like that :) coding bootcamps can be useful too if you can afford them! once you get the basics under your belt, apply to as many grad roles as you can find (and anyone who says you need a college degree? they're lying)

The same applies for most pets. Dogs are a big one because they are arguably one of the most common pets, but most animals that are kept as pets are kept poorly.
For example, ball pythons?? You would not believe how many people have reacted to my ball python with something along the lines of "how did he get so big?" to which I always have to respond with "...you mean barely adult-sided?"
Dogs are more commonly kept to adulthood even in terrible conditions because they are hardy animals even if poorly trained. A lot of other pets (which are typically sold as babies, similar to dogs but I digress) don't even make it to adulthood because people just do not bother to learn anything about the animals that they want to keep as a pet.
No matter what animal you get as a pet, learn the diet. Learn how to train the thing (if its a trainable animal). Learn how to read its body language and temperament. It doesn't matter if you think you already know it, look it up and give yourself a refresher.
No one tells you that one day you will get older and look around and notice that 95% of ppl who own a dog should not own a dog
