Dear Peppertaemint,

I sort of think of you as an expert when it comes to K-Pop, media literacy and topics that deal with queer themes, given your writings on Taemin's work for example. I hope my inquiry won't be considered a waste of time because I know you don't deal with silliness in your inbox, but I will try my luck.

I will admit that I keep up a bit with the BTS members, albeit scarcely. I happened to read on twitter (known as X now) that through his artistic expression, Taehyung is either indicating he is queer or perhaps a suporter (an ally just like Valentina) of the community. All that is supposedly apparent in his first solo music video, with references to queer cinema or the clothes he's wearing for a photoshoot. Of course, this is not the first time this has been speculated in online circles. I'll post a link at the end of this message so you could get an idea of what I'm trying to explain.

What I would wish for is a more unbiased opinion from someone with vast knowledge and a cultural background and who doesn't feel the need to prove anything about their bias. At least I think he's not your bias. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Despite there being a high probability that this ask is a put-on, I’m going to take it at face value and reply in earnest.

I looked at the link you sent, which was a tweet of a Russian video purporting to tie the films Velvet Goldmine (1998) and Jubilee (1978) to Taehyung’s recent MV and, seemingly, his identity. I can’t read the Russian blocks of text in the video, but I can see the split-screen shots comparing Tae to characters in Velvet Goldmine. I can also see that Taehyung appears to wear a shirt of the film Jubilee in a promotional photo.

Now, I’m old enough to have been around when Velvet Goldmine came out; it’s a film about sexuality and aesthetics in the glam rock era, and it not-so-subtlety tells, at least in part, a take on the long time rumour of David Bowie and Mick Jagger’s liaison as lovers during glam rock days. In all honesty, I cannot see how this film in any way, shape, or form, has any relation to Taehyung’s “Love Me Again” MV beyond perhaps they both involve sequinned outfits.

“Love Me Again” is a slightly moody, barebones MV of Taehyung singing in a Spanish cave surrounded by retro items. His hair is a golden mess, while his clothes are cheap sequin getups with golden chains around his neck. Tae is moody in his MV, but he’s no glam rocker. He’s a crooner lost in time and confused. He ends the MV practically disgruntled. For me, the through line of the exotic setting, the props and the styling doesn’t quite come through. So, there wasn’t a lot for me to take away from Taehyung’s MV, but when all his MVs are released, I will watch them in order and share my thoughts. Again, I don’t see any meaningful relation between these two works. And certainly I don’t see anything overtly queer about Taehyung’s MV. If someone wants to come with concrete examples of “he said X” or “he did X” or “he wore X,” then I can consider such things.

And about his clothes: Derek Jarman was an important gay rights activist in the UK. But his activism was, more generally, in the 1980s onward, and focused on certain laws that effected education in the UK as well as raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic. These are very important works, especially to me living in Britain as a queer person. However, the film Jubilee is not about that work. It’s a punk film in response to the Queen’s Jubilee in 1977, and it presents a dystopian future of monarchical Britain and features some of the best punk bands of the time, including The Slits and Adam and the Ants. That shirt is about the punk movement - an important movement in Britain to be sure, but it isn’t centred on queerness.

My advice to Kpop fans looking for queerness in Kpop is to start with those who are doing concrete things in the genre: Holland and OnlyOneOf are a great place to start. Then you can look at Taemin, Key and SHINee as a whole, and reach out from there. SHINee’s “My Identity” from the album Hard (2023) was played at Seoul pride this year. I’d really recommend having a listen. And before a critical interloper writes in to say that everything queer must be cryptically coded because SK isn’t safe for LGBT+; I’m very aware of the rights people are lacking in SK. However, there are levels to meanings in art, and every artist has their own comfort zone when it comes to what they wish to share, and what they wish to be “unlock-able,” and what they wish to keep firmly for themselves. What I don’t think is helpful is conspiracy-level theories about art being queer-coded. That’s because art is already meant to interact with its audience; what a piece of art means to you is what is the most important. If you find something that speaks to your queer side in Taehyung’s work, than for you, that’s what his work is. That doesn’t mean his identity matches yours. There’s no need for that. That’s the beauty of art.

As a postscript, this shot here is exactly what reminds me of Key’s solo work: spooky retro style. That’s Key’s signature, which has been a personal extension of certain works in SHINee’s oeuvre (like “Married to the Music”). What remains unclear for me is what this union of elements signifies for Taehyung.

The Names of the Seven Dwarfs

If anyone asks you the names of the seven dwarfs, it's obvious which names they're probably thinking of:

Doc, Grumpy, Dopey, Happy, Sneezy, Bashful and Sleepy.

These are the dwarfs' names in Disney's 1937 animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and in pop culture they're the names inescapably associated with the characters.

But of course they're not the only names the dwarfs have ever been given. Non-Disney adaptations have found many other interesting names for them:

In the 1912 stage play and 1916 silent film, their names are Flick, Blick, Pick, Whick, Snick, Glick and Quee.

In the 1955 West German film, their names are Wurzel, Klaps, Flink, Troll, Purzel, Tröpfchen and Bimbam (or in the English dub, Whitey, Bushy, Eddy, Teddy, Freddy, Blacky and Bimbam).

In the 1987 Cannon Movie Tales version, their names are Iddy, Biddy, Diddy, Fiddy, Kiddy, Giddy and Liddy.

In the 1987 Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics anime version and the 2001 film Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, their names are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the 1994 UAV animated version, Snow White and the Magic Mirror, their names are Dickie, Danny, Dewey, Dougie, Dobie, Donny and Fred.

In the 1994 anime series The Legend of Snow White, their names are Boss, Chamomile, Vet, Gourmet, Woody, Goldie and Jolly.

In the 2012 film Mirror, Mirror, their names are Will Grimm, Butcher, Wolf, Napoleon, Grub, Half-Pint and Chuck.

In the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman, the eight dwarfs are named Beith, Muir, Gort, Nion, Coll, Duir, Quert and Gus.

In the 2019 German TV film Schneewittchen und der Zauber der Zwerge, from the Märchenperlen series, they all have the names of dwarfs from Norse mythology, four of which were used by Tolkien too – Bömburr, FIli, Ori, Jari, Gloin, Ginarr and Thekk.

In the 2019 animated film Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, their names are Merlin, Arthur, Jack, Hans, Pino, Noki and Kio.

The different names chosen for these characters obviously reveal something about the different tones of each adaptation. It will be interesting to see what kind of name theming the next non-Disney adaptation chooses for them.

Prompt 37: AU where when red son got attacked by the spider thingies he lost and ended up as one of spider Queen's goons, spider queen teases Xiaotian

This is a very bleak turn of events now, isn’t it? Seems destiny is a little... off track.

This is all your fault by the way.

They had no idea what to do. There were just spiders... everywhere. It seemed that every single person in the city had been taken over by the Spider Queen’s spider drones, except the demons.

Xiaotian had expected to run into at least one, maybe Jin and Yin popping out to cause trouble now that there was chaos around for them to get away with more. But there was no one. No Jin and Yin. No Macaque, if he was even still alive. No DBK or Red Son.

Just the Spider Queen and her spiders.

Until he found them.

It didn’t take long, of course. Just until the end of the day. There was only so far they could run before she got an idea of where they were and the best plan of attack they could come up with was to meet her before she found them all again.

Red Son leapt onto the bow of the ship from his own, no longer brilliant red and purple and yellow coloring his hair and clothes but deep purple and green and black. On his back were the same mechanical spider legs as every spider zombie, but something else. Horns growing from the side of his head, white as bone, and a tail with a tuft of fur on the end. He was DBK’s son after all so... that sort of made sense.

More importantly, they knew there would be trouble following him. Maybe it was a bit foolish for him to expect the Spider Queen to just laze about enjoying her victory when Red Son was screaming in her ear about fighting them. The entire group, herself and the spider minions she sent to the docks and a human turned spider, cornered them all on the drone and the battle was more one sided then Xiaotian would ever admit.

Red had taken to attacking him in tandem with the Spider Queen, keeping him on his toes until he was caught in the queen’s web. And just when he was about to land the final blow with a screech of “NOODLE BOY!”-

Spider Queen swatted him to the side, slamming him into the wall of the ship.

“NO,” she hissed, looming over Xiaotian with a smirk. “This one is mine.”

She chuckled, coming closer and closer until she was mere inches away from his face. Grabbing his chin to force him to look at her she smirked, wide and victorious and gleeful.

“This is all your fault by the way,” she said, raising one of her spider legs high into the air. “If you hadn’t sent Sun Wukong in to do your job for you, well. Maybe things would have been different.”

Neither of them noticed how Red Son froze when he stood, gripping his head tightly. Neither of them noticed how he seemed to be taking to someone else, despite everyone else being occupied on battle.

“Too bad, so sad, little Monkey Brat,” she said rearing back, ready to strike. “You’ll die doing what everyone else will. Bowing to your new Quee-AAH!”

Another scream sounded near simultaneously to hers, low and guttural and agonized as something encased in flames dove into her and sent her flying off the side of the ship.

“R-Red!?” Xiaotian yelped as the fire dissipated, watching as the transformed human spider did something with the cuff on his arm and they all dove off the ship after their Queen. “What are you-!?”

He didn’t get to finish his question either as Red Son screamed again, less of pain and more in anger as he slammed his hands down on the floor of the ship. Fire erupted around them in a pattern, one very purposeful and methodical, and the last thing Xiaotian and the others saw before something made their ship soar in ways that shouldn’t be physically possible was the scowling form of the angered Spider Queen on her own ship.

“What happened!?” Spider Queen rounded on Syntax as they watched the Monkie Kid’s ship disappear. “He should have been completely loyal to me! Why did he do that!?”

“I-I don’t know, My Queen!” Syntax said shakily, holding his hands up in fear. “He shouldn’t have been able to fight it if he was human, m-maybe it doesn’t work as well on demons!”

Spider Queen growled, glaring at Syntax for a moment before moving on to the back of the ship with a smirk. “You’d better be right about that... but no matter. Wherever they run to isn’t important now, one little demon and all of the Monkie Kid’s friends are no match for me with all my new power, let alone all of us. Come, let’s go back. I want to check on my new subjects.”

“I think that is most wise, My Queen,” a new voice said, a young girl smiling serenely.

Her words made the Queen smirk wider, laughing as she gloated and continued walking.

She didn’t notice how the White Bone Spirit’s eyes glowed softly when she wasn’t looking, a light white shine to her hair as she talked softly away from the other’s prying eyes.

“Keep going Red Boy,” she whispered, her voice and his old name resounding inside Red Son’s head. Not contradicting the venom but changing its design, changing his loyalty, changing who he listened to. “You know what Xiaotian needs. Lead them to them all.”

On the ship, in the celestial realm, Red Son held his head in his hands after explaining what happened.

“I believe him,” Xiaotian said, gesturing to the spider-bull demon on the floor before them. “Look at him. Look at what he did. Spider Queen was pissed! Maybe it just... doesn’t work the same on demons.”

“OK, but why bring us here?” Xiaojiao asked, gesturing to the massive palace before them.

“Because,” Red Son groaned, out, standing up shakily. “Oh... oh I hate this, these legs are... something to get used to... But, I brought you here because before I was captured I realized I could make an anti-venom. And all the ingredients are here.”

The White Bone Spirit smirked as she watched the dismayed form of the Demon Bull King in his confines from outside. He spoke ill of his son but when he had come in to show him his transformation personally it was easy to see how much he had broken at the sight. He wasn’t a good father, perhaps. But there was care there.

She knew that should Wukong bring him up there would be just enough of what she needed him to do.

Everything was now finally back to plan.
